A musician's musician! A must hear........2003-10-26
The works on this CD show another side to Abramowitsch. The playing on this disk is simply superb. The sensitivity shown in the melodic lines combined with a remarkably intuitive structural continuity make this a CD to be cherished for a long time. Because this is the only Abramowitsch CD commercially available makes it all the more special.
Because he did not believe much in studio recording (spontaneity was paramount in his performing philosophy) all performances on this disk were recorded live.
The Beethoven Bagatelles are some of Beethoven's last pieces and require a spohistication of musical understanding combined with a simplicity of realization that is rarely heard in modern performance. This is unquestionably the finest performance of this work I have ever heard. Abramowitsch captures the elegance and depth of this work without highlighting its eccentricities as heard in the Schnabel rendition. The work of 6 pieces is heard as a one complete whole and emanates almost as in one breath.
This ability that Abramowitsch displays -- to bring spontaneous cohesion to the great works of piano is a very special talent and in my mind, sets his playing apart from virtually any modern performer. The playing of Edwin Fischer and Artur Schnabel come to mind when hearing this playing. However, Abramowitsch's sensitivity of line and his magical way of unfolding the structure of a piece is at times simply mesmerizing. While both Fischer and Schmnabel had this ability, there was often a studied quality to fischer's playing and an eccentric quality to Schmabel's. Abramowitsch's unfolding of the musical beauty of these pieces is as natural as sunlight.
In the Schumann Humoreske (a piece less known and performed) he holds the contrasting sections together remarkably. This series of vignettes becomes one cohesive story with several chapters --- undoubtedly the way in which Schumann himself conceived of the piece. The tender lyricism evidenced in the opening and then again throughout the piece is wonderfully natural and heartfelt. The piece sounds as though it was conceived literally, in one breath.
This is the playing of a truly great performer and not to be missed! One hopes that more volumes of this artist will be forthcoming soon.
