Customer Reviews:
old style baroque.......2007-07-23
It is enjoyable to hear good performances of music now played "authentically", but in an earlier style. Much baroque music was essentially new to listeners, in the pre-LP period. Both new and old styles have value, if appreciated for just what they are. Also, it is a reminder of how I felt when first exposed to music of the Baroque.

Customer Reviews:
This cd literally changed my life!.......1999-12-12
I'm a violin freshman at Eastman School of Music, and in spite of (or more likely because of) my apalling lack of music-history-knowledge, this cd completely revolutionized the way I think and feel about baroque performance practice, "period instrument" recordings in general, and the 4 Seasons in particular.
In case you haven't noticed, there are a WHOLE LOT of 4 Seasons out there; what sets this recording apart, at least at first glance, would its unusual instrumentation, but what really makes it addictive (as well as head-turningly fresh and exciting even to someone who has heard and played the piece until it oozes out their ears!) is its daring to take the meaning of the music and its expression beyond the boundaries of lazy musical imaginations and the stunted creativity of modern score-dependent orchestras. In other words, when the music should be light they play stacatissimo; when it should be heavy they attain a pesante that Mahler would call barbarous. Their loud parts rival anything amplified instruments could conceive, while the soft parts are barely audible. They are completely uninhibited by any kind of unspoken dictum that one can be only so expressive and still be in good taste. And what changed my life was the fact that you're ALLOWED to play Vivaldi this way! It would be excessive in Brahms, but it's actually historical and even desirable!
Okay--now that I'm done babbling exuberantly about the principles that make this recording different, for the technicalities. There are far more than the usual five string instruments represented on this disc. The consort rests on the premise of using the instrumentation that would have accompanied a Vivaldi opera or cantata, since the Seasons are programatic (via the explanatory sonnets that Vivaldi himself wrote as a sort of program notes for a world unaccustomed to programatic music without voice) and lyrical, with movements more like arias than concerti (e.g. the Largo in Winter). This means that the rennaissance "violin band" of violin through "bass violin" is joined by members of several other kinds of "bands"--lute quartets, guitar ensembles, and harp consorts--each of which was associated with a particular mood, setting, and theme (lyrical, festive, pastoral, grotesque). In opera, these instruments often populated the continuo part in addition to the harpsichord we usually hear today.
The addition of instruments such as harp, cittern, guitar, theorbo, and regale has two effects. One, as intended, is that they give the consort greater textural freedom to express these varying ideas by using the appropriate instruments in the appriate places. The other effect is that the orchestra gains a percussive, spine-tingling, speaker-blowing power that sends the watery, insipid, gut-stringed memories responsible for your involuntary tic at the words "period instruments" to a happy oblivion.
I think my approval is clear by now, but I can't end this ridiculously long rant without mentioning the absolutely stomach-turning virtuosity with which the soloist sears through the runs. Not with modern neatness or refinement, but with an unrestrained enthusiasm that sounds, as it is, not that far removed from its ancestors, the fiddling of folk and dance music, and the lightning "virtuosity" of jigs and reels.
Put all that together, and this is not only the best 4 Seasons I've heard, it's the best of the (admitedly few) baroque recordings I've heard.

Excellent recording of Vivaldi.......2007-03-09
This is an excellant recording. The music is very enjoyable, that can be played time and time again.
excellent modern instrument set of vivaldi, superb recording quality.......2006-02-27
Firstly the suggestion that period instrument specialists are 'manic and irritating' is unfortunately ill-informed.
That is not to take away the fact that these modern instrument Academy performances of major vivaldi concertos are (a) outstandingly good for modern instrument versions [which is a valid preference] and (b) superb value for money. If your preference is (as mine is generally) for the more rhythmic and colourful aspects of period performance then you may be disappointed, but then you wouldn't be buying a modern instrument set of Vivaldi anyway. As such they are beautiful and virtuosic performances.
This 4 seasons has a top-notch reputation (not listened to it yet) but whereas the l'estro armonico and La Cetra recordings show the limitations of a modern chamber orchestra where a sprightlier period approach may overcome a certain overpolished sheen (beautiful in its own way), the La Stravaganza set is quite simply magnificent, with not a hint of stodginess, where the period/modern debate matters not one jot and sheer liberated musicianship takes hold. I have not heard Podger's new period recording of this, but this modern instrument performance blows away Pinnock's (now quite old) period instrument recording of the same work in my view.
In all buy this set with confidence if you are happy to overlook the period performance movement and wish to discover Vivaldi played by top-notch interpreters, or buy this as part of (or the start of) a larger vivaldi collection, and add other interpretations from the likes of Biondi, Standage, et al, on period instruments and even Virtuosi di Roma (on modern instruments) and I Musici if that style floats your boat....
One-stop Vivaldi shopping.......2006-02-19
Fifty dollars (35 with some dealers listed here) buys you an excellent seven disc collection of many of Vivaldi's favorite concertos. The recordings were made in the 1960s but the sound quality is excellent. The performances are "old-school," as someone would say, played on modern instruments and in a manner that doesn't reflect the revised "correct" view of how these works should be performed. That means the sound is smooth and lovely and the playing is not manic and irritating. Personally I find these long highly-regarded recordings to be charming and filled with character and the performances flawless without sounding sterile at all. Maybe it's not the way Vivaldi wanted them to sound but go ahead and prove that conclusively! I purchased this set not long ago and I have to admit that the magical recording of the Four Seasons contained within made me fall in love with the piece all over again--after ignoring it for nearly two decades. The rest of the set made me finally fall in love with Vivaldi's music.
You'll encounter a lot of strong opinions on this kind of stuff. I'm ignoring most of it and going where my heart takes me on music like this--I don't want it to make me feel smug, I want it to make me smile.
Next stop, Munchinger's Water Music and more of the extraordinary Bach Guild recordings which I cannot recommend enough.

Customer Reviews:
The best recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons.......2002-08-28
A unique and marvelous gem of a recording. This performance will stir you. Technically impeccable as well.
After having listened to several dozen recordings of Vivaldi's Four Seasons, I found Muti's to be the most pleasing to the ear. Considering the price, it is a great CD.
Many of the other recordings (which are 2 or 3 times the price) are simply flashy and superficial interpretations. I believe it takes someone with a deep knowledge of Vivaldi and his music to make a meaningful recording of his work. Muti, and the all-Italian orchestra are in touch with their countryman's elegant yet passionate work.
