With 20 CDs in the collection, we have classical music for every mood and atime of day.

4 out of 5 stars Would give 5 stars if sound quality where better.......2007-06-30

This Classical collection is one of great length and breadth ,and is well worth purchasing ,if you want an abundance of music at a low price. The sound quality is decent, however it is not great. This set will not provide you with the crisp, clear sound quality of a RCA,CBS or other well known label,so some classical aficionados may not appreciate it much.It all depends on what your looking for ,I guess.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection for a great price.......2007-06-27

I did not expect much in buying this collection, but I was greatly surpeised. There were no reviews of the product at the time, and I bought the collection simply as a sampler of many great piano pieces. Most of the recordings are exquisite and of decent recording quality. This collection was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars 20 Fabulous Discs.......2007-06-08

I am surprised that this set has been out for 4 years and nobody reviewed it here yet. This is a lovely and occasionally amazing compilation. I was moved by many of the compositions. I really enhanced my classical music collection with this set. You have so many legends here to enjoy, from Bach to Brahms, Mozart to Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Gershwin, and more. If you love classical piano music and don't already have most of these works then this is a must buy for you. The price may go up, but I was fortunate to cash in on the $17.97 price. Quite a bargain for 20 fabulous discs.

This, the third installment in the first stereo Ring (once thought lost), from the stage of the Bayreuth Festival in 1955, is as impressive and crucial to any collection as the previously released Siegfried and Die Walküre. Joseph Keilberth, whose devotion to Wagner was so great that he died conducting the second act of Tristan, leads an incredibly tight performance--almost jaunty in its storytelling. The opening chord, depicting the Rhine, is not played softly as marked; it does rather plunge us into the action with more energy than usual. The singing is universally remarkable. Hans Hotter's Wotan towers in its snideness and potency, while the Fricka of Georgine von Milinkovic is more subtle and alluring than we're accustomed to. Gustav Neidlinger's Alberich is, as on so many other recordings in which he sings this role, something to reckon with--a despicable but wretched character. The giants of Ludwig Weber and Josef Greindl have probably never been bettered; Paul Kuen's Mime is articulate and creepy and Rudolf Lustig's Loge is wily and clearly, cleanly sung. The only stain on this recording is the dreadful hissing noise given off by something called a "Mixtur-Trautonium," an electronic device invented to simulate the sound of the Nibelungs' anvils in Nibelheim. It's a distraction, but it can be lived with. This set is a must-have, and the extraneous noise during that scene is small price to pay for a performance this thrilling. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An AWESOME "Rheingold" from a "RING" for the Ages!.......2007-06-19

This recording of Wagner's "Das Rheingold" recorded live at Bayreuth in 1955 is a TRUE masterpiece, a testament to the heights that can be reached when "everyone works together" for the sake of the "art" itself, not self-aggrandisement (which we have today, generally). Every aspect of this recording pales every other! It immediately, and solidly, goes to the top of the list of "Das Rheingold" choices on disc. As do the remaining three operas, also recorded at the same time, by the same cast, that make up the "Ring".

Going back over the decades of my life, I remember when you only had one choice for a "Ring"...Solti/Decca, and that was it.

Then, there came the von Karajan, and then the Bohm/Bayreuth. Then, there seemed to be a mini-explosion of "Rings" over the following years, so many that it became/becomes staggering to think about!

Two statements:
1) If you are NEW to Wagner's "Ring" do not become confused with all the choices out there. There are really only two live recordings you need consider...the Krauss/Bayreuth, and this one, Keilberth/Bayreuth, and one studio recording to think about, the Solti/Decca set. You may think this excessive, but you NEED all three of these recordings. Period.
2) If you are FAMILIAR with Wagner's "Ring", then, assumably, you want the Best recording of it. I will assume you already have the Solti set, as most people do. The Krauss set you may or may not have. It is a stunner. And, now, the Keilberth....the most awesome recording, in many ways, you will ever experience.

Think: 1955, live, Bayreuth, the Best Wagnerians of their age, assembled together at the behest of Wagner's grandsons, in Wagner's theater, and the best part....recorded in STEREO! By Decca, of all people, before the Solti studio Ring was ever thought about! Why Decca sat on these magnificent recordings just blows my mind.

Luckily for us, Testament acquired the rights to release these timeless recordings, and we now, after 52 years, can marvel at and enjoy these magnificent performances of four of the greatest musical masterpieces ever written, combining to make up the most monumental work ever written for the stage! Enjoy this (set) of Masterpiece Recordings! ~operabruin

4 out of 5 stars Age defying performance........2007-05-07

Never let the age of this recording deter you. It is vibrant. It is alive. The companion Götterdämmerung is even a little harsh - it adds to the primordial nature of the people. This performance is astounding. Hotter, whose contributions to the Solti Ring and some other later recordings were tremulous and far beyond prime, is here absolutely the god he should be. His voice alone conveys that, but what he does with it shows why he was the Wotan of choice for so long. Gustav Neidlinger is his foil - Alberich. He is just as malevolent as in Solti, but he is even fresher of voice. That can be said of all singers in the entire cycle. A telling scene in this recording is the natural flow of the Nibelheim scene. It is a conversation, so natural and easy that one hardly notices that Loge is maneuvering the conversation.

To those who have no Ring, this is an excellent choice. to those who own the Solti Ring, Karajan Ring, or whomever, this is a wonderful alternative. I was amazed at the quality of the sound. Why only 4 stars? Well, in the later music dramas, Walküre and Siegfried, Keilberth takes tempi that would allow those two operas to be on three CDs each. But they spread them over four CDs. At the Testament price, that gets very expensive.

5 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2007-03-22

What a find this recording is! Along with others in this "Ring" series, Keilberth's performance adds invaluably to what we know about the Bayreuth performing tradition. As a conductor, Keilberth has at times been underrated by reviewers, but this "Ring" cycle is putting his detractors to shame. Like Kempe, he has an ability to propel the score in ways that are hard to define; without projecting himself as a "personality", he brings the music marvellously alive. And it happens that, looking back, one finds him at the center of many memorable productions; a "Freischutz" from the late fifties, a "Barber of Seville" from around the same time, and, much earlier still, a "Turandot" with Maria Cebotari that is astonishing. The other main revelation, in these "Ring" recordings, is the crystalline, beautiful sound. Many of the essays in early stereo--RCA's records with Reiner in Chicago, Decca's recordings in Vienna or EMI's in England--have a propensity to be more detailed and attractive than later recordings. Ever wonder why? This is not the place to try answering, but it's clear that Keilberth's 1955 "Ring" takes its honored place among that group, and bids fair to become--at least in my experience--the most glorious-sounding set of records ever.

5 out of 5 stars The Bayreuth 1955 Ring Cycle by Testament.......2007-03-08

I now have the four disc sets in this series of the Ring. Three I've bought at Amazon, after realizing the pricing was much better here than at Borders where I bought the first.
All are excellent recordings. Truly top notch, though not inexpensive.
If the Ring Cycle is music you enjoy, I highly recommend this set with it's excellent musicians and singers.

5 out of 5 stars About that "hissing noise"..........2007-02-22

It begins at about 1 hour 8 minutes in, and continues for about 25 minutes. It's undoubtedly annoying - like really bad tape hiss. But at *no* point does it (even slightly) obscure the voices of Hotter & Neidlinger etc. at their absolute peak, in (otherwise) excellent sound.

Anybody who dismisses this remarkable set simply because of that is just missing the forest for the trees. But if you're in doubt, all you have to do is listen to the audio samples that Amazon has so helpfully provided: those for Disc 2, tracks 2 through 6 show off the "hissing noise" at its worst.

For whatever it's worth, I think that those who are kicking up a fuss over said "hissing nose" are being more than a bit silly. And I can't help wondering whether they could deal, even for a moment, with the much more severe audio compromises required to appreciate the incomparable recorded interpretations of Frida Leider & Lauritz Melchior & Friedrich Schorr.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasing interpretations at an excellent price.......2006-11-06

These are not overly flashy performances, just very musical. Boeykens is technically secure, and he makes these works sound easy. His musicality is genial, with dramatic touches as required. His performances naturally delineate the form of the music, while tastefully playing up its early Romantic emotional qualities. Easily the best bargain in Weber clarinet concerto recordings. My opinion of the Meyers performance of the Grand Duo is similar.

    4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-08-16

This CD is well recorded and the musicianship is excellent. The compositions seem to me good but not great. A nice listen and good price.

5 out of 5 stars Good Basic Weber CD.......2004-09-06

Boeyken's rendition of the Weber pieces are very good. I may agree with a previous poster that the performances aren't spectacularly exciting. However, as a clarinetist I've played and heard these pieces performed so many times that it would be next to impossible to create a "ground-breaking" recording, no matter how hard the clarinetist tries. That being said, Boeyken's renditions are very pleasant and played with technical perfection. They will not disappoint.

I personally like Paul Meyer's rendition of Grand Duo Concertante. It is quite fast, so many passages that might be intricately phrased at a slower tempo are just torn through by Meyer, but if you are looking for a technically impressive performance, this will do.

At the price, this is a great CD, especially for someone wanting to hear the Concerti played in a conservative style. My favorite Weber Concerti is Sabine Meyer's on EMI (her interpretations are much more daring than Boeykens), so you might check that out also. Any music fan's CD library should have enough room for many renditions of these famous staples from the clarinet world.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing special, but worth a look.......2004-06-16

Walter Boeykens does not have a stand-out, easy-to-identify tone, and does not play with an outward charm. But however, the performance is technically flawless and confidently played. James Conlon, one of the great American conductors today, leads the Rotterdam to a phenominal accompainment.
In the Concertante, Paul Meyer plays his typical fast rendition. Though he pulled it off, this recording of the concertante seems a bit sloppy and unattractive to me. Perhaps it is because this is one of Meyer's earlier recording jobs prior to hitting it big with Denon in the early 90's. Anyway, his tonguing, especially in movement 1 was not quite sharp, and he also takes a long annoying repeat that rarely shows on any other recordings (and for good reason, too!), as a result prolonging the length of the first movement to well over 7 minutes.

Still, this disc is well worth buying. At a measly 6.98 bucks, it contains a lot of music: 4 complete pieces including 2 concertos, a set of variations (the concertino), and the concertante which is really a sonata-like composition. All centerpieces of romantic era solo clarinet literature.

5 out of 5 stars An absolute steal!.......2004-04-15

What you get for $6 is absolutely amazing! Walter Boeykens takes the Weber Clarinet Concerti to new heights. In particular, his playing during the alla polacca of the Concerto in E-flat Major is nothing short of supberb. It is the most effortless version of these pieces that I have ever heard. I am buying more of these for family members; it's probably the best-valued clarinet CD out there today.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Astrid Varnay in an excellent "Dutchman".......2007-03-31

SOURCE: Live performance at the Bayreuth Festival in 1955.

SOUND: In general, Bayreuth performances throughout the 1950s were well-recorded, just as in general, performances from the Salzburg Festival during the same decade were not. Why this should be, I have no idea, but it is a good rule of thumb, nevertheless. This "Flying Dutchman" is no exception to the rule. The solo voices and the chorus are very nicely caught and correctly balanced against the orchestra hidden away as Wagner intended in the covered pit. I think this set captures the unique sonic ambience of the Festspielhaus as well as any recording of its time.

Since this is a live performance, there is a certain inevitable amount of foot stomping. The spinning chorus at the beginning of Act II is accompanied by a number of authentically clacking, clattering spinning wheels. Equally authentically, the laws of physics seem to prohibit the wheels from clacking and clattering in time to Wagner's music. The fiercely disciplined audience discloses its existence only at the very end when it bursts into applause.

If you insist on seeking them out, you can hear some tape hiss, a few joins of the old analogue tapes and a couple of fleeting moments of drop off when a singer enters a partial sonic dead spot. Of course, if you hear all that, you've been so busy listening to the sound that you probably haven't heard the performance.

CAST: Der Hollaender, a cursed sea-rover - Hermann Uhde (baritone); Dalland, a Norwegian sea captain - Ludwig Weber (bass); Der Steuermann, Dalland's sleepy-headed steersman - Josef Traxel (tenor); Senta, Dalland's daughter, a young woman much taken by a portrait of s storm-blown voyager - Astrid Varnay (soprano); Mary - Elisabeth Schaertel (mezzo-soprano). CONDUCTOR: Joseph Keilberth with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and Chorus.

COMMENTARY: This is as good a performance of "Der fliegende Hollaender" as we are ever likely to get. Fans may praise one famous performance or another as its equal, but there is no better one on record. I base that rather grandiose claim on the fact that this performance has it all: a conductor who remains true throughout to Wagner the composer and to Wagner the man of the theater, a remarkably strong cast of singing actors and an unswerving adherence to the dramatic arc of the piece.

When I had finished listening to this set for the first time, I dug out my old copy of Karajan's 1980s version for comparison--and in order to determine whether Herr Doktor von K's outing was as really as feebly cast and bullishly wrong-headed as I had remembered. (It was.)

I generally agree with the comments about the cast made by Mr. Steinberg in the previous review, although I am willing to give a little more praise to Rudolf Lustig's Erik. The Dutchman's would-be rival is, after all, a rather rough and ready character at best and I think it makes good dramatic sense for him to sound a bit frazzled. Good as the other singers are, the real star is the wonderful Astrid Varnay. Senta is usually regarded as being a less demanding role than her Wagnerian sisters, so she tends to be cast with sopranos of lighter heft. Varnay, of course, outclasses them all, for not only is she a full-fledged Brunnhilda, but a great one to boot. Senta, with the likes of Varnay singing, is a true star part!

Some purists may object that Uhde seems a bit strained on his highest notes and Varnay occasionally sounds a little thick. I can only reply that these failings are few and far between, and that they are trifiling compared to the remarkable overall levels of performance.

It has long been fashionable to be loftily dismissive toward conductor Joseph Keilberth. The Good Grey Grammophone Magazine has called him "Kapellmeister" and "routineer." Whatever the merits of that, I can't recall any opera recorded by him that was less than first rate. When Keilberth conducted, what emerged tended toward the intentions of the composer, not the idiosyncratic demands of an egotistical baton-wielder.

Five wild and storm-driven stars. Jojohoe!

    5 out of 5 stars Bayreuth Rules!.......2006-12-22

This is another great issue from the 1955 Keilberth Bayreuth series. I have already commented on the overwhelming power of his "Rheingold" and "Walkuere" (I have no doubt that the res of the 1955 Ring will be of equal quality and will be the ESSENTIAL Ring), and the same goes for this Dutchman. The Overture sets the stage for a vigorous, weighty, but not elephantine interpretation, with the scent of salty sea air and thunderclouds just jumping out at the listener. As for the cast, the title role, sung by Hermann Uhde, is perfectly rendered. Uhde had a leaner, perhaps smaller voice than Hotter, but has the same intensity and sensitivity; what a shame that he never was properly appreciated in his lifetime! His is certainly one of the three best Dutchmen on record (Hotter and Fischer-Dieskau are the other two). Weber's Daland likewise is as fine as Frick's and very close to Hann's. Traxel is one of the the best Steersmen (The other is Wunderlich) and Schaertel is a lovely Mary; only Lustig's Erik sounds a bit worn and unromantic (Lustig is a great Loge in the Keilberth "Rheingold", by the way). He is by no means bad, but certainly falls short of Windgassen in the Knappertsbusch from the same festival and Schock in the Fischer-Dieskau/Konwitchny set. But one role here is simply in a class by itself: The Senta of Astrid Varnay. No other Senta on CD or LP can match the power of her delivery and its raw passion. Recordingwise, this is another great set from 1955 Bayreuth. I would never want to give up the Krauss or Konwitchny sets, but if I had to pick one "Flying Dutchman" that really storms the seas and makes the case for the superiority of live performances, this would be it. BAYREUTH RULES FOREVER!

Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was certainly one of the greatest singers of her own, or indeed any other time. An obsessive perfectionist, her flawless technique and intonation over a huge range, vocal flexibility, breath control, phrasing, stylistic versatility, and above all her focused, radiantly beautiful sound were matchless and incomparable. All these are on full display on this generous 2-CD set, which features over a dozen arias, songs by Schubert, Wolf and Richard Strauss, and some lighter fare. The recordings were made between 1950 and 1967, and the singing becomes better and better, the voice richer and more varied, the expression deeper and more immediate. Not surprisingly, the peaks come in the arias from her signature roles in Mozart's Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte; Richard Strauss' Ariadne, Rosenkavalier, and Arabella, which rise to real ecstasy; and arias from Weber's Freischütz and Smetana's Bartered Bride, which are wonderfully intimate and touching. She is less convincing in roles she never sang on stage, and the "childish" voice she cultivated especially for Hänsel and Gretel is unnatural and contrived. The same is true of the last two "popular" numbers, which sound condescending and artificial. The songs, however, have all her customary finesse and inwardness; the Wolf group, perhaps chosen for its gentle humor, is charming, while Strauss' "Four Last Songs" (represented by two) shimmer and soar. Schwarzkopf's singing had instantly recognizable characteristics: a tendency to hold back both vocally and emotionally, giving a sense of noble restraint, but also of cool detachment; excessive use of color and nuance, creating a fussy, calculated and somewhat artificial air. Only rarely does she "let go" with full voice and spontaneous feeling. However, as these recordings show, she invariably inspires admiration and captures ear and heart through the inimitable, glorious beauty of her voice. --Edith Eisler
