Amazon.com essential recording
The Hilliard Ensemble bathes these vital vocal works by Josquin in a Mediterranean light: clear, warm, and brilliant. Josquin was a northerner who, like so many other composers of the Renaissance, descended to Italy to pursue his career. The singers bring to life the composer's marriage of the Flemish preoccupation with technique and the southern instinct toward lyricism. This is an extraordinary disc. --Joshua Cody
Customer Reviews:
A good reference disc.......2007-03-20
These performance are crystal claer, but seem to lack emotional investment.
Beautiful music........2007-01-05
I just wish there was more recorded Desprez out there. Enjoy this lovely CD.
Beneath the objective criticism often lies a subjective grandeur.......2006-07-14
3 1/2
Sacred choral works sung with the subtle graces of stained glass refracting light, still at times synonymous sentiment in tonality looses value in between a few more upbeat numbers. While focusing and authenticating to the vibration of what was undoubtedly a symbolic pillar of faith many centuries ago, one benefits more from a detached awareness from composition in favor of utter immersion into the sublime transitions throughout these hallowed vocals. Although hardly a definitive collection, this disc serves as a good introduction (& painful reminder) to the ancient, purist reception this stilling music once knew.
The Orlando Consort sings Desprez much better..........2005-03-28
This unexpensive and rather short cd offers a selection of Desprez's works, both sacred and profane in a 50/50 ratio.
While some people may find the contrast between the (extremely)slow, stately religious pieces and the quick, playful songs in French and Italian stimulating, I found it slightly disturbing. I definitely would have preferred a selection of pieces with a greater unity of mood and style.
While the performance is certainly first-rate, the recording seems to me to be below average: when you turn up the volume, an annoying hum is heard in the background. Is this problem due to the inferior quality of my hi-fi? It might be, but the fact is that this maddening defect has appeared only on very few of my cds (it is also very evident on recordings of the King's College Choir).
I recommend in addition to this cd Ockeghem's Mass "De plus en plus" by the Orlando Consort. Ockeghem's Great Lament for the death of Jean Binchois is in my opinion much more beautiful and moving than Desprez's own lament for Ockeghem on this cd.
I also warmly recommend "Desprez: Motets", also by the Orlando Consort, an imported October 2000 Deutsche Grammophon CD, for me one of the best, if not the best Renaissance sacred music recording. IMHO, The Orlando Consort sings and interprets Desprez infinitely better than the Hilliard Ensemble and even beats the Tallis Scholars.
The total duration of this recording is 50 minutes.
Splendid.......2005-02-23
Other reviewers have pretty much said it all-- all I can add is-- if you don't like James's voice, then don't listen to Hilliard. David James is to the Hilliard Ensemble what The Edge is to U2. ;)

Customer Reviews:
I love it and I give it as a gift.......2006-12-11
This is the first collection of choral music that I've purchased and I love it. I own copies of operas and requiems and masses, but if you attend choral concerts, as I have been recently, you learn there is a huge colletion of choral music appart from the forms I've been listening to. I appreciate the producers selecting "Song for Athene" by Tavener and "Celebration (Standing Stone)" by McCartney. They are new to me and I love them. Disk 1 ends with "Jerusalem" and Disk 2 ends with "Land of Hope and Glory." As an American I rarely hear these and I am so glad they were included. I believe this album was intended to help popularize choral music and I believe the selections do fine job towards that end.
I know snobs rage against popularizing classical music, but everyone deserves exposure to the beauty of song. I will also mention here "The East Village Opera Company" because they work to popularize opera by setting it to a rock beat. They do a fine job but also get criticized for attempting to popularize classical music.
"The Best Choral Album in the World...Ever" was so popular with my teen-age daughter that it was hard to get it back from her. I give the album as a gift to nephews and nieces.
MarMSED.......2005-08-27
The music selections are extraordinary. The only problem has to do with the balance of sound. There are some parts that are very loud, and some that are so very soft. You have to continually adjust the volume.
Diverse range but the songs are butchered..........2005-07-24
Well, this CD isn't horrible by any stretch, but it is irritating to someone who's more than a casual listener of choral music. I'm by no means as musically "literate" as many reviewers out there, but I have a collection of probably twenty-five or thirty choral CD's and this is one that will probably be gathering dust in the back of the CD book.
The peices are well-performed for the most part, but they are hopelessly edited. Beethoven's Ode to Joy is somewhere around twenty four minutes, but this CD only includes an arrangement of about five minutes. The beautiful Miserere is, uncut, almost eleven minutes but is cut down to five and a half minutes here.
Looking back, I should have realized the major editing that would be involved, just by the sheer number of peices on it. I'm familiar with a great many of them and I know they're too long to fit onto a seventy minute disc without some major cutting going on. I just didn't reason that out before I shelled out the money for it.
Bottom line. This CD has decent singing, but is nothing special. If you're a newcomer to this genre, you might get this as a quick overview of the different types of choral music out there, but if you're any kind of an avid listener, this CD will drive you insane with the severity of the cuts. Beginners, if you're looking for a great collection CD, you'd do better to look at "Choral Moods". It doesn't have the diversity in styles of this one, but it will introduce you to incredibly talented composers. To the old hats out there, steer clear of this one and look to CD's by your preferred individual composers themselves. It's more money, but much less frustration in the long run. The old sayings are sometimes the best: You get what you pay for.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2003-10-29
This was well done, I'm wondering however if anyone has any luck tracking down what choir is singing the 'Randall Thompson's Alleluia'?
The real thing.......2002-05-15
I was reluctant to buy this recording because the title and the underlying concept seemed commercial, superficial, and hokey. But these are genuinely fine performances of great works. Whoever put this together did it right. I recommend it without reservation.
Are you kidding?.......2001-12-22
I bought this CD based on the three previous reviews and the fact that I like beautiful choral music. But I found Tears from Heaven dreadfully dull and uninspiring. There were perhaps three tracks that I enjoyed listening to. So here you have another opinion.
If This is What Heaven Sounds Like ..........2000-04-14
then I can't wait to get there ! Out of my extensive music collection this is the album that gets played on a daily basis. It is not often one can say that every track is pure pleasure to listen to; but it is the case with Tears from Heaven (and the second CD in the album - Voices from Heaven). This album has to be heard to be believed. For variety, musicality and recording clarity this is is truely a divine collection. I highly recommend it !
GORGEOUS.......1999-12-22
THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CHORAL MUSIC I HAVE EVER HEARD. IT BROUGHT ME TO TEARS. HOPE THERE IS A SEQUEL TO THIS.

Customer Reviews:
It's a gem!.......2006-11-21
Interesting mix of styles at work here. Paseabase El Rey Moro is particularly pleasing. Montserrat lends true feeling to this piece as she sings the part of the Moorish king. Her recitation of the old man's 'Dutch uncling' is unexpected and equally passionate. All this is punctuated by a musical style that never loses its Moorish influence but changes, oh so subtly, into a more 'European' mode. In direct contrast, Begona's performance of Canció en ritmo Quddan de la Nuba Gribt: Al Hussein de Marruecos is equally compelling. The voices are married perfectly to the styles of the music. In short, if you like Iberian music of this period (circa 1492), get the album. You will not be disappointed.
Review: Isabel I: Reina de Castilla.......2005-07-27
This is a meticulously designed and recorded compilation that provides a delightful introduction to music of the late 15th and early 16th centuries . The CD includes both instrumental and vocal compositions that are performed with considerable expertise and verve. The package contains an illustrated booklet that includes an essay on the history of the period and full lyrics but, alas, is rather weak on details regarding the music other than to place it in historical context.
Not always historically accurate, but fabulous performances.......2005-05-23
This recording presents a selection of music from the time of Isabella of Castile (1451-1504), organised to present a hypothetical illustration in sound of the main events of her reign. Connoisseurs will be familiar with a number of these pieces, many from previous Savall recordings (Palacio, Encina, Colombina discs). Alongside the Spanish works (villancicos, romances, sacred music) are examples of Turkish and Sephardic music, and also a Dufay chanson.
As on many other recordings by this ensemble, historical accuracy is secondary to an overall aesthetic result, and it is perhaps not difficult to understand why Savall's approach has ruffled certain musicologists. Where most of the works recorded here would have probably been performed by a small group of musicians (often a cappella), in these performances there is a wide range of instruments used in addition to the voices (including shawm, cornett and sackbuts). Four tracks have 'composed' introductions [tracks 1, 4, 10, 13], whilst Narvaez's romance [track 12] is transformed from a standard example of the genre into a hybridised Hispanic-Moorish lament.
On the other hand, it is equally apparent why this group have been greeted with such unanimous international acclaim. There is, after all, a significant difference between a sound recording and a musicological article - something which is not always as obvious as it should be in some of the more "correct" renditions of this repertory. Furthermore, there are a number of tracks which are definitely plausible [tracks 5, 8, 17, 20], as well as some which frankly do not stretch extant evidence - direct and indirect - too much [tracks 4, 15, 18; a thorough and satisfactory investigation of the political villancicos and romances - tracks 7, 10, 13, 16, 18 - has yet to be undertaken...why and in what contexts would such works be performed only by small forces, given their obvious exaggerated political overtones? Would Ferdinand and Isabella really have heard, for example, Encina's lament to their dead son [18] performed by no more than four singers in the elite isolation of their private chambers...?]
But what undoubtedly sets this recording apart from so many others of this repertory is the phenomenally high standard of these performances - unsurprisingly given the personnel line-up [Begona Olavide, Montserrat Figueras, Carlos Mena, Jean-Pierre Canihac, Markus Tapio, Andrew Lawrence-King...etc]. Given that so many tracks could be singled out to support this observation - not to mention the musicians themselves - it perhaps only remains to be said that this is without doubt one of the most incredible recordings of Cancionero songs available.

This certainly is a desirable compendium of some of the most famous large-scale choral pieces, primarily drawn from Deutsche Grammophon's catalog of operas and oratorios. Among the 30 selections on this two-disc set are choruses from Carmen, Lohengrin, Aida, Madame Butterfly, and Il Trovatore, as well as Messiah, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Bach's St. Matthew's Passion, and Verdi's Requiem. --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Dies Irae-The Essential Choral Collection Review.......2007-07-07
This 2 disc collection of Choral music is a great introduction to classical music. Many of these selections have been made famous in movies and will be recognizable to even the most casual listener. I bought this album for O Fortuna by Carl Orff, a song that is featured in Excalibur and Jackass: The Movie. The music on these CDs is great. I especially like Symphony No. 9 by Beethoven, Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg, and Requiem by Mozart.

The Greatest Choral Masterpieces.......2005-10-02
This collection is outstanding, featuring the best choral works from operas and oratorios in classical repertoire. It begins with the fiery and intense Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem. This piece is sublimely performed by the Berlin forces. It's followed by the anthem-like Va Pensiero from Verdi's early opera Nabucco, as conducted by Sinopoli and sounds maravelous. A brief excerpt from Beethoven's Ninth "The Ode to Joy" is a treat. The Coronation Anthem from Zadok The Priest by Handel is well-executed and powerful. The famous Bridal March (better known as "Here Comes The Bride") from Wagner's opera Lohengrin is sumptuous. A lot of this music is grandiose, and all the famous grand choruse from the grand operas like Aida (The Triumphal March scene) and the Inquistion Scene from Don Carlo. What is missing however, and I would have enjoyed, is the wondrous Finale to Wagner's Die Meistersanger which features a great chorus in praise of art. My favorite piece on here is the little known Mass of Saint Cecilia by Charles Gounod. It is absolutely gorgeous and epic sounding. The underrated but great conductor Igor Markevitch conducts. The famous O Fortuna from Orff's Carmina Burana is also on here, not to mention Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus from Messiah and other pieces from Judas Maccabeus. This is a great collection of chorus masterpieces that any fan would appreciate or if you are studying to sing in chorues yourself.
Not that bad... at first.......2005-03-26
There's plenty of free samples to this CD, and I agree that this is a great collection of music. Chances are you won't find a collection of songs, all of them with angelic choirs, as great as this. When I got it I was quite happy with it, but when I heard the same songs done with different conductors I thought to myself: 'Hey, why doesn't it sound like my CD?' It's the quality that I don't like. For example, Dias Irae is a great song, and it sounds pretty good on the CD, but compare it to another version and this one is slower, the chorus is off key, and it doesn't have that intense emotion. Same thing with O Fortuna, it's a great song, but the chorus is just terrible on this CD, the instruments are lacking in emotion: percussion doesn't add that extra 'oomph' to the bass drum, the cymbals don't have enough emphasis, the chorus sounds like they're about to go asleep, and the dynamics between fortissimo and pianissimo have little effort.
I'd recomend this if you have little cash to blow on a lot of good songs, otherwise you might want to search for a bunch of seperate CDs with the same songs.
Gread Idea, Great Performance.......2003-03-03
This CD should move people in a way that few other recordings can. The one word to describe many of the works is "exalted". This is not music for dinner parties but instead should be heard in solitary contemplation of all the great artists and their efforts in creating such an inspiring recording.
Dies Irae.......2000-03-07
I have an extensive CD collection, but since purchasing this CD, it has become my very favorite. This music sent chills down my spine. I felt transported to a different world....What amazing voices! I intend to give this cd as xmas presents to family and friends.

Theatrical Verdi, ravishing Cherubini.......2007-04-21
Listeners may be familiar with Riccardo Muti's 1987 La Scala recording of the Verdi Requiem featuring Studer, Zajic, Pavarotti, and Ramey (a wonderful album but a bit pricey). This earlier recording (June 1979) with the British is, fortunately or unfortunately, quite a different rendition.
Muti's 1987 recording featured brilliant but well-disciplined singing. In this 1979 album, however, the discipline seems to have been left outside the recording studio.
Words are grossly mispronounced, soloists are often a bit flat, and some of the vocalizing is uncomfortably forced. There is also a lot of use of ritards that sometimes sound overdone.
But what made up for these drawbacks - and why I really LOVE this CD! - was the no-holds-barred theatricality. If you want a performance that is every bit as operatic as Verdi never wanted it to be, if you want every human emotion front and center, if you want a reading that couldn't care less about all those vocal niceties that music teachers charge so much to teach - well, here it is!
The CD fools you at first. The opening Requiem chorus is barely audible, as is often the case. But suddenly you get punched in the face with the angriest, most violent "Te decet" basses you've ever heard. Forget the usual hymn-like treatment this passage normally gets. These hymnists are carrying sledgehammers.
When the four soloists enter for the Kyrie, they leave no doubt that this really is going to be Verdi's "greatest opera." I have never, ever heard the Kyrie opening with such prima donna bombast.
Veriano Luchetti had recorded the Verdi Requiem just two years earlier with Georg Solti and Leontyne Price. He was theatrical then, and still is. It's a real pleasure to hear him go full voice in places like Quid sum miser and Hostias.
Agnes Baltsa would later record a marvelous Verdi Requiem with Herbert von Karajan (1984). Her big, powerful voice still rings with Muti.
Evgeny Nesterenko is a star of the Russian opera world. In 1979, he was no doubt the Jerome Hines of the USSR. Of all the Verdi Requiem basses I've heard, Nesterenko is one of my favorites. His pronunciation will make purists cringe, though, and half the time he sounds like he's singing through his nose. But his monumentally deep bass sound and swooping vocal theatrics are so much fun to listen to!
While all of the soloists did their part to maximize the drama, I think Renato Scotto gets first prize. Her Recordare is the weepiest I've ever heard, with lots of pop-music style inhaling to add to the emotion. In the Lacrymosa, you can almost see the tears coming down; you'd think you were watching the final scene of Madama Butterfly. In the Libera Me, she sounds frightfully angry, like she's ready to punch God in the face. Scotto has a huge voice with a bit of a wobble; she is recorded extremely well here.
The Ambrosian Chorus, like the La Scala Opera Chorus several years later, had their hands full with Muti's lightning-fast tempos. Practically all the choral highlights (Dies Irae, Sanctus, Libera Me fugue) are done at frightening speeds which this chorus handles with great control. The sopranos are strangely over-miked at times: during the Libera Me fugue, their long sustained notes were distractingly loud and detracted from the main melody line.
The Philharmonia Orchestra does well, but even they can only do so much. Muti conducts the Dies Irae so quickly, that the strings literally have to slow down ever so slightly so they can negotiate the virtuosic runs. The brass sound great throughout, but sometimes they are over-miked to the point where they drown out the chorus.
Luigi Cherubini (1760 - 1842) wrote two requiems. The first, the Requiem in C Minor, was written in 1816 in France. If you've never heard a requiem that has no soloists, I strongly recommend this performance by Muti, the Ambrosian Chorus and the Philharmonia Orchestra (recorded July 1980, London).
Cherubini was a contemporary of Mozart's, so comparisons are inevitable. Mozart never came close to finishing his requiem; Cherubini's score is complete from cover to cover. Personally, I was totally enchanted with this setting and am at a loss as to its infrequent recordings and performances.
The Cherubini Requiem lasts 48 minutes. The opening Introitus and Kyrie were subdued and very moving, quite unlike Verdi's version. The Dies Irae was a powerful statement, proving that a good chorus and orchestra are all you need to depict Judgment Day.
The Offertorium, at 16'33", was the longest movement. It features a heavenly setting of the phrase "sed signifer sanctus Michael" and a rousing setting of "Quam olim Abrahae" that must surely have lifted the audiences off their chairs.
The Sanctus is short (only 1'20") but is overwhelming in its majestic sweep. The requiem finishes with a dramatic setting of the Agnus Dei that might surprise some modern ears.
The Ambrosian Chorus makes the most of this exhilirating score; they are a joy to listen to. Muti and the Philharmonia seem to have put the Verdi behind them, and have formed a satisfying partnership that makes this precious music shine.
No texts or translations. This 2004 album was released earlier in 1996.
Highly recommended.

Thank you all very much for posting to me this CD. Everything went well, and got my CD in my hand in no time. I will purchase from here in the future.
All-out operatic, no holds barred.......2006-09-27
On its first CD release The Gramophone's reviewer ranked Muti's first Verdi Requiem from the early 80's as among the top ten ever recorded. Put another way, there are nine better, but in the LP era some critics found this performance so compelling that it was ranked No. 1 on many lists. Where did this exaggerated praise come from?
First, the professional Philharmonia chorus sounds superb, singing with wonderful unity and musicality (though not with Verdian fervor). All of the soloists are exemplary except for the aging Scotto--she was the greatest artist among them but not the spinto-dramatic soprano required here, or the alternative lyric soprano one sometimes hears (e.g., Schwarzkopf).
More generlaly, this was a hot shot's Requiem, eschewing spirituality for raw power and impact. Muti's Dies Irae and Sanctus were exhiliratingly fast. Memories of the fiery Toscanini were recalled. Now the Dies Irae seems like a pardoy as it races past. To tell the truth, the one thing that riveted my attention, despsite the wobble in her voice, was Scotto's tragic, almost wild solo singing. Muti's second try in the Nineties delivered a tamer reading, but this one can stand as a tribute to his early promise as Toscanini's all-too-brief successor.
