IMPRESSED.......2007-05-21
AS A FIRST TIME BUYER AT AMAZON,I AM IMPRESSED AT THE QUALITY OF CD AND TIME OF SERVICE
St. Paul's Cathedral ImpressiveCollection of Anglican Hymns.......2007-01-24
St. Paul's Cathdral is the second largest cathedral church in the basilican style, exceeded only by St. Peter's Rome. New York City's St. John the Divine is larger than St. Paul's, but with decidely gothic elements. All three cathedrals have fine choirs, but St. Paul's and St. John's continue the noble and unique sound of boys and men in the English tradition. St. Paul's great organ is one of the world's finest, with a decay of seven seconds. The great hymns are all here, conducted by John Scott, only recently appointed organist of St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City. This is a recording will a be prized addition to your library of choral music. You will not be disappointed.
Excellent Cathedral Organ & Choral .......2006-02-24
This selection of recordings by The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral contains pieces representative of traditional Anglican musical liturgy. The technical aspects of this production on compact disk seem to be outstanding, but beware that the original recordings were in some cases less than stellar. Another reviewer points out that on some tracks the lyrics sung by the choir are overwhelmed by the superb organ playing, which no doubt occurred due to inadequate microphone placement during the recording sessions. That said, I nevertheless rate this presentation of the St. Paul's Choir highly. It provides a mixture of musical types. In addition to the choir, the CD presents the work of four organists, including a marvelous organ solo, as well as several pieces sung a cappella by the choir and its boy treble soloists. I especially recommend this choir's rendetion of Gregorio Allegri's "Miserere," which features the voices of two boy trebles, a boy alto and a bass, which yeilds a mesmerizing experience. Unless one is acquiring full sets of the St. Paul's Choir's music, this compact disk should delight anyone interested in traditional cathedral organ and choral music.
LACK OF DICTION?!!!.......2003-11-12
Obviously the individual who wrote the review including the "marred by lack of diction" remark is not too familiar with the traditional boychoir sound. I am moved to sickness that they were so openly compared with the sound of the all-too-familiar MTC. THOSE WERE ADULTS!!! These are boys! Boys cannot give the kind of sound of the MTC because their voices are not developed enough. The greatest hope a boychoir has of wowing audiences is in their contrast in dynamics. They model this beautiffully in their acapella pieces. In their accompanied pieces, I feel they hold their own above the (sometimes blearing) organ.
Know the genre a little better before you slander a great performance.
Marred by lack of diction.......2003-04-22
The singing is beautiful, melodious and full of harmony. The organ would make Bach proud.
But the lyrics do not stand out. In fact, they are obliterated by the surrounding melodies.
I hate to do this, but I am comparing with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. These little boys would learn from them.
It is a pity that these grand lyrics should be obscured by inept singing by a choir of young boys and men.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful..........2006-06-22
I have had the privilege (yes privilege) to perform all the works of Tavener that are recorded on this CD. As an Organist/Choirmaster I have also had the pleasure of my choirs performing many of the works heard here, i.e. Funeral Ikos, The Tyger, The Lamb, Alleluia (Song for Athene), and Two Hymns to the Mother of God, amongst many others. His music is quite captivating and sometimes quite heart-wrenching. I know when "Funeral Ikos" was performed at the funeral services for a former Priest (Episcopalian), there wasn't a dry eye or seat in the place. The choir in this recording is a superb group and as expected, they performed remarkably well. There is no grey area when it comes to the music of John Tavener. If you want a good recording of his choral music, I highly suggest this CD.
Controversial Tavener.......2005-09-05
Wander to over to Classicstoday.com and do a search for all the reviews of Tavener's works. You'll come to the inescapable conclusion: Tavener sucks. What's even more astounding is that this judgement seems to be shared by nearly all in Classicstoday's notoriously fractious stable of critics. Quite a feat.
So, is Tavener as bad as all that? I must confess that I haven't been exposed to what is apparently Tavener's worst stuff. Also, British critics hate self-promotion, and Tavener has practiced self-promotion (and pretension) to a nearly obscene degree. This may get in the way of a serious appraisal of his work.
I find this disk quite pleasant, although I can see how having to endure longer works of Tavener's would be difficult. His musical themes are very simple, and they are worked out in manner that can rather quickly become boring. In these short choral works, which are performed with expert precision, this thematic claustrophobia can actually produce a striking effect.
I have an inkling that there might be something of a Tavener revival 20 or 30 years from now. Make no mistake, he is fathoms below Part, Rautavaara, Hovhaness, Kancheli and Gubaidulina, among composers who write in a similar style. But on this disk, at least, he scores a moderate success.
Incredible music at an incredible price.......2005-04-13
This is the best addition to my music library I've made in quite some time. Hearing the ethereal Song for Athene sung for Princes Diana's funeral I was mesmerized. It wasn't until our church choir began rehearsing this piece that I learned who had written it. I immediately went to Amazon to find more music by John Tavener. When I saw the price of this recording, I hesitated--perhaps the rest of his music doesn't match the quality of Athene? Why else would the price be so low? Since receiving my order I can only say it is worth far more. Anyone who enjoys the mystical eastern sounds introduced to us in the 60s and 70s will thoroughly enjoy Tavener's marriage of English choral music with the hypnotic droning "ohms" of eastern music.
You will experience mystery and contemplation as you listen. Blake's and Herbert's poetry take on new meaning when set to Tavener's provocative underpinnings. His other pieces further create a sense of wonder, meditation, and awe. To listen is to be drawn to worship. Each piece on the disc adds value to the recording. What a marvelous find.
Top-rate singing at a wonderful price.......2003-01-27
For all the minor "complaints" one could have about this recording, it is still a wonderful, recent recording of beautiful music from one of England's finest traditional choirs. For such a cheap price, it is WELL worth the money!
Tavener's music is perhaps an acquired taste. If modern, "hypnotic" sacred choral music appeals to you, then you would certainly do well to buy this recording, which includes some of Tavener's best works. I personally enjoy the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis best. Everything on here is very well sung -- sometimes truly beautifully so -- by the men and boys of St. John's College Choir.
If you like Tavener, this CD is certainly worthy of your collection. If you are not familiar with Tavener's music, then this is the CD to buy to discover it -- the quality of singing is first-class and the price can't be beaten!
Nothing Special.......2002-07-05
I have liked Tavener since Apple and the Whale.
I came across this in a budget section and gave it a whirl. Actually it has been in my car for three days. Well written, well sung, well orchestrated. Well what?
Well it does not seem to me, although I am no expert, that it sounds pretty much like any other English choral music.
It sounds good but does not sound special.
I like it but it does not raise my soul.

Customer Reviews:
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR STUDY OF LIVING GREGORIAN CHANT.......2007-02-27
Although Gregorian Chant is very carefully tied to particular times and seasons, and therefore recordings of the living chant always feels odd out of season and captured and pinned on display, like fascinating irridescent butterfly wings on cotton under glass, please play this disk and live and breathe a little easier, in peace and in rhythm and in unity.
Gracefully directed by Dr. Marier, this recording wonderfully captures the greatest living Gregorian choir fully active in the United States of America, at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, which daily and nightly maintains the true cycle of Gregorian chant, completely, in the living of the Rule of Saint Benedict with all of the liturgical hours fully chanted as ever through the centuries, per saeculum saeculi. The best way, then, to experience in union this true and living and breathing chant is to spend as much time as possible on retreat at the Abbey in still rural Bethlehem, Connecticut. Lacking that ability, live with this disk, and let it play day and night until it becomes a part of your bones and you sing with it without yet quite knowing it.
I strongly recommend this disk for anyone who fully and deeply wants to know Gregorian Chant, as chanted by a contemplative community of devoted and committed women in America. Hear also their recording, also with Mr. Marier, of the Festal Celebrations of the Virgin Martyrs and Our Lady of Sorrows, which includes the founding Abbess Mother Benedict's blessing.
Please note in particular the most important Marian hymns are included on this disk, for anyone seriously interested in learning the most important Gregorian Marian tones. FOr instance you find here a solemn version of the Magnificat, the greatest hymn of Mary directly from the Gospel of Saint Luke, which is chanted every day at Vespers without exception by any monastic choir worthy of the name. We also may find here Regina coeli and the wonderful seasonal hymn, Salve Regina. Please look closely at the play list and you find nearly every traditional Marian hymn you can recall. Within this collection are scriptural meditations beautifully read by Mother Dolores Hart, an actress who was on her way to becoming the next Grace Kelly (who had then abdicated her throne to take on the throne of Monaco) but entered Regina Laudis monastery instead, filling its readings with the depths of her trained and restrained and profoundly emotional voicings. We are very fortunate she is so well recorded here, and regret she never made at the height of her powers an audiobook of the entire Holy Bible, or at least the Psalms, or Gospels . . .
In other words, what more can you possibly ask for?
Please note the photograph on this product, the Mysteries in the Life of Jesus, Son of Mary, is of the new Abbess, Mother David, who is currently directing the choir in a fresh recording of the hymns of Christmas, a new recording which may be available come Christmas of this year. In the mystery of Bethlehem, that will be well worth adding to your music library, for anyone serious about studying the true Gregorian chant as it is lived and breathed daily by this now too rare and precious choir.
Please also see the soon-to-be-released biography of Mother Benedict from Ignatious Press. Let us learn to cherish our American saints and study from them how to live in peace and loving Catholic community in this quadrant of the hemisphere.
Please see all of the Abbey's rare recordings at their website.
Excellent recording of Gregorian Chants.......2002-04-09
I bought this recording a few weeks ago and it has quickly become a favourite. While Gregorian Chant has become popular, especially with the recordings of Santo Domingo de Silos, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that Gregorian Chant is sung prayer. In hearing the nuns of the Abbey of Regina Laudis sing, you understand that this is something that they experience each day. It is a beautiful recording and is accompanied by beautiful meditations on the life of Jesus read by Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B.

Stupendous majesty and awe.......2007-03-21
Westminster Cathedral Choir is one of the finest Catholic Choirs if not in the UK. Anyone who has never visited the building would be blown away by the sheer size of it with a long nave and fine Willis Organ facing the West end position. This collection of delights are a delight for any listener who appreciates the old masters to the more contemporary. The Britten is a revelation and the longest work is the double magnificat by Charles Stanford. Notice how the Choir stay perfectly in tune on the note and never tired of such a work which is unaccompanied. A real treat.
A Definitive Collection.......1999-09-28
This disc is ideal for anyone who is curious about the Roman Catholic Cathedral just down the road from Westminster Abbey. It features music from all ages, all of which is brilliantly sung. Of course, since it covers such a broad range of styles, it is what I like to call a "buffet" CD- there's always a firm favourite item, rubbing proverbial shoulders with something less appealing. For instance, I am very taken by the Panufnik work "Deus meus es tu" but find such items as the Palestrina quite dull (although other works from that period such as the Byrd "Ave verum" are most arresting). On the whole, this disc is the definitive "voice" of Westminster Cathedral Choir, and it will be interesting to see what happens when director James O'Donnell takes over at Westminster Abbey in the new year. A broad mix of music that is good value for money.

Customer Reviews:
A shallow & unremarkable voice.......2006-07-12
Echoing an earlier reviewer, one is struck by the fact that Ms. Garrett's voice is an instrument largely lacking in depth & expression. All the notes are in place, more or less, but there is no nuance. She does nothing with music she performs to shape the melody or the lyrics that might imbue it with her own distinct interpretation. While she isn't nearly the joke as some of the "popera" acts which seem to be all the rage these days, Ms. Garrett nonetheless leaves us only with the impression of how remarkably unremarkable she is.
mediocre.......2005-03-09
These performances are mediocre at best. She has clarity and stable technique but her voice as an instrument is a bit shallow. Her expressiveness is also predictable which makes her boring to listen to. The "Art is Calling for me (Prima Donna Song)" was annoying - Kiri te Kanawa does a much funnier version, and of course, more beautiful.
Inspiration.......2001-12-03
As an aspiring singer, this CD is an inspiration. A sensitive interpretation, though she does rush through 'Si mi chamano Mimi' a little bit. Always wonderful to listen to her recordings of repretoir my friends and I are working on.
Garrett's intellegence shines thru in her singing........1999-09-10
Garrett's interpretations are unaffected, clean, and almost always seem 'right'. She sounds like someone I'd like to meet... The last song on this cd, "I Want To Be A Prima Donna", knocked my socks off. (I still find myself smiling every time I listen to it.)

Customer Reviews:
Moving.......2007-01-14
Of the two disks recorded at San Marco, I find this one the more enjoyable for its variety in pieces and arrangement of choral and instumental works; although it's been a while since original recording, I found the sound reproduction exceptional on a good system: Gabrieli's ephemeral sounds on his stage-moving!
Recording problems not quite solved/more rehearsal?.......2007-01-12
These are some of the antiphonal pieces that Giovanni Gabrieli wrote for the two balconies of San Marco in Venice. The recording problems there must have been many, and in reality, were not quite solved. The antiphonal effects are there, but there is a lot of muddy sound, with the whole thing sounding as if through a veil. The performance is "old" style, but I could accept that from 1967. What bothers me is shaky ensemble, with performers unable to overcome the space. They never seem to have understood "watch, don't listen", which is crucial in strange spaces like San Marco. Maybe they couldn't get enough recording time in the space, but there is some terribly ragged ensemble. AND screaming tenors, who aren't quite tuned into the style (although I don't know who was, in those days). BUT, these are good examples of attainable performances of these pieces, and unless you are experienced in early music, and are performing these pieces (with large college forces, maybe), this is probably what your performaces will sound like. Cleaner, I hope.
'Welcome home' to an old friend.......2007-01-09
I got a pleasant surprise when I put this CD on my music system. I recognized it immediately as the CD re-release of a marvelous album that I had thought was long out of print, "The Glory of Gabrieli, Vol. III." In the late 1960s and early '70s, organist E. Power Biggs joined forces with Gregg Smith, the Texas Boy's Choir and a host of others to produce a series of albums spotlighting the music of Giovanni Gabrieli. The albums were all recorded in the basilica of San Marco in Venice, taking advantage of its wonderful acoustics. The first two albums in the series featured a combination of organ, voices and orchestral forces. But in this third volume, Biggs and the orchestra removed themselves to the wings, so to speak, and an a cappella album was released featuring only the voices of the Gregg Smith singers and the Texas Boy's Choir, unaccompanied.
I had an old-fashioned cassette tape pirate copy of this album for many years, but as cassettes would, it ultimately wore out. I then found that, despite my searches, the album was no longer available. I finally caught up with it one day, in a used-record cardboard box at the public library's used book store. I was glad to have it back, but of course it was an old LP, rather beat up and scratched. Now I'm glad to have it once gain, pristine and unscratched on a digitally-remastered CD.
For 35 years I've been collecting music, and this has always been one of my favorite albums. I'm very glad to welcome it back again.
Heavenly music performed as in heaven.......2002-05-17
This is an extraordinary find for the connoisseur of baroque and early church music. Tracks 9 and 14 are some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard. As the jacket quotes from an English visitor of the time (1600), "Nevere in may life hast I heareth such celestial strains as these. Truly, these be the tones that the Almighty himself doth heare."
Old Favorite re-released on CD.......2000-01-23
I had bought this as an LP in "quadrophonic" sound and thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, it may not be up to modern day recording standards but it is a worthwhile recording nonetheless. I highly recommend it as an intro to Giovanni Gabrieli.
