This is a based on the works of one of history's greatest composers. Grainger is my personal favorite, as he writes many melodies for saxophone. "Molly on the Shore" is probably my favorite track on the album. If ou find that you enjoy this, search out a recording of Grainger's "Lincolnshire Posy", it is quite possibly the greatest piece ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Delight in a Country Garden.......2001-07-26

This is one of those discs that sneak up on you and grow in delight with each playing. The ensemble playing is crisp and spirited and the melodic intervention rich. The adaptation of the Franck Chorale for band is priceless. I look forward to exploring Mr. Grainger's opus as a result of this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Franck.......2005-10-26

Cesar Franck is one of my favourite composers for the organ. I bought this CD a few weeks ago, and I've been pretty pleased by it. Eric Lebrun is a talented organist and the instrument he plays has been kept up in good shape over the years.

His tempos are somewhat brisker than those of Murray, especially in the Grand Piece Symphonique, Op. 17. But the church of Saint Antoine des Quinze-Vingts is a more intimate space than that of Saint Sulpice. Also, the organ is quite a bit smaller than that of Saint Sulpice. It is somewhat a more intimate Franck, I suppose, than Franck played at Saint Sulpice or Saint Sernin in Toulouse.

Still, it is an excellent introduction to the organ music of Cesar Franck.

Album Description

Vladimir Viardo

Born in the Caucasus Mountalns near the Black Sea, Russian pianist Vladimir Viardo traveled to Moscow at the age ot fourteen to further his musical formation. Once in the capital, he was taken to the family of Lev Naumov (Custodian of the Heinrich Neuhaus methods that are credited with producing the extraordinary twentieth-century Russian keyboard masters, Gilels and Richter), with whom he later studied at the Moscow Conservatory. During his six years of study he was tenured as a soloist by The Moscow Philharmonia, and after receiving his doctorate, went on to the position of assistant professor with Naumov at the Conservatory where he is associated to this day.

In 1971 he was awarded the Grand Prix and the Prix du Prince Rainier in the Marguérite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition of Paris, and two years later was the top prize winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, subsequently receiving contracts for some seventy recital and symphony orchestra appearances in major US cities.

Then, despite having already launched an impressive global career, Mr. Viardo's travel visa was mysteriously revoked, resulting in his virtual imprisonment behind the iron curtain for fourteen years. During his confinement he developed new horizons in artistic achievement, and enlarged his repertoire, which eventually included thirty-seven concertos.

With the era of "Glasnost" and "Perestroika," Vladimir Viardo returned to public engagements in Germany and in the US, and was quickly offered a tour and recording contract with the Dallas Symphony. As Artist-In-Residence at the University of Nor1h Texas, Mr. Viardo established the Viardo Fellows Foundation, which is committed to providing musical training of the highest artistic quality.

Mr. Viardo's tours have taken him to leading Nonh American and European cities, as Well as to Asia, South Africa, Israel, and to Central and South America, where he has appeared as soloist with such conductors as Mehta, Maazel, Penderecki, and Mata. His recordings have Included the works of Nicolai Medtner, Lutoslawski with the Polish National Radio Orchestra, and a SONY release honoring Penderecki's sixtieth birthday. Mr. Viardo's first Pro Piano Records release of Bach-Liszt and Franck-Viardo Organ Piano Transcriptions (PPR 2245O9) received critical acclaim internationally and continues its worldwide popularity.

5 out of 5 stars Viardo touched God........2002-11-21

It's the most precious recording that I ever heard. It caught my soul and dropped my tears. Listening to the Mr. Viardo's transcriptions I could hardly believe that the piano could sound like that...what a genius work.
This CD proves that we still have great pianists that are concerned with our feelings. Mr. Viardo is a pianist-artist, is playing is a full painting with a deep meaning.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful & sensitive performance!!.......2000-12-04

Bach has lovely polyphonic music compositions which have to be sensitively & insightfully performed to bring out his harmonic & stylistic intentions for any particular works of his and the C.Franck's Chorals were carefully transcribed to retain it's original depth & beauty of the texture & harmony.

I would recommend this to anyone who would like to gain insight to these beautiful music. I feel that the artist had carefully analysed all these, balanced the polyphonic requirements for The J.S Bach & have sensitively brought out each of these insights of the composers' music & world for all of us as food for thought. Vladimir Viardo plays with a depth in piano performance that is not often found in many of today's young pianists who, most of them, displays brilliant techincal works but not this kind of depth.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This Guy Can Play the Organ!.......2001-06-27

I have just gotten interested in organ music in the last two years. Before then, I never really knew there was such a great body of literature written for the organ as a concert instrument. This album was given to me as a gift to encourage my exploration. It has made me realize that Franck and Durufle were giants when it came to writing for the organ. Kent Tritle's playing is dramatic and exciting. I think this album is just terrific! I hope he makes many more.

5 out of 5 stars Great Perfomance + Great Organ = Great Recording.......2001-01-02

Kent Tritle is one of the most outstanding organists in America today. A member of the faculty of his alma mater the Juilliard School since 1996, Tritle is an enormously gifted virtuoso with superb musical sense. As the primary force in the design and construction of the outstanding Noel Mander instrument at St. Ignatius, heard on this disc, it is highly possible that in a hundred years it will be said that Tritle made the most historically significant contribution to the organ scene of New York City in the late twentieth century.

Calculated to show the vast stylistic possibilities of the instrument, the chosen program no less shows the consummate artistry of the performer. The first sonata of Mendelssohn displays the richness of the ensemble sound of the instrument and the warmth with which it fills the acoustical space of the noble building. Tritle does not shy away from enjoying the Romanticism of the work, rather he delights in its expressive nature while never stooping to sentimentality. His approach to the great Bach fantasy and fugue is full of drama and good taste. Tritle understands that the drama is to be found in the piece as it unfolds, rhythmically and harmonically, rather than in gimmicks or registrational tricks. Tritle's performance of this standard is superb. The disc would be worth the price for this selection alone, but there is so much more.

Nicolas De Grigny was selected to represent the French Classical school. This is an easily accessible example of this highly ornamented style. A work of Juilliard composer Vincent Persichetti, "Shimah B'Koli" is given a very respectable performance. This work is a challenge to most listeners, and Tritle makes a convincing presentation. The menu on disc is richly crowned by two scoops from the French Symphonic school. Technically, these works by Franck and Durufle are at least as demanding as the Bach. Kent Tritle has a very special gift for this genre and communicates the mysticism as well as the fireworks of these two masterpieces.

I have often given this disc as a gift to friends and students just becoming interested in the great literature of the organ. Those already converted should buy it for themselves! This is a wonderful recording!

Franck was the first great organ composer after Bach. Kind of amazing when you think about it. Just what were all those other guys doing for 125 years? The truth is that great organ music is inextricably bound up with the availability of great organs, and in the mid- to late-19th century a French organ builder named Aristide Cavaille-Coll created what are arguably the finest instruments of that century. These huge instruments, with their almost orchestral variety of sound, encouraged composers like Franck to return to the instrument and create music worthy of their new sonic potential. The first fruits of the new French organ school are here, expertly played and recorded. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best by far -- if you can find it.......2005-06-20

Of the recent sets of Franck organ works, the differences are clear enough. Michael Murray is forthright but dull, while Jean Guillou is excitable but so oblivious to the letter of the score, especially in registrations, as to seem daft.
Marie-Claire Alain's performances display her trademark combination of reverence and alertness and she is superbly recorded on the Cavaille-Coll organ of St. Etienne de Caen.
It is by far the best set out there...but that's the problem. It's too far out there, not currently available in the US. One hopes that the Warner Apex budget re-issue that is currently available in Europe and the UK will soon appear here as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal for Franck Organ..........2004-05-24

Fin-de-siecle Franco-Belgian musique performed by a Frenchwoman on the Cavaille-Coll organ (1884) at St. Etienne, France, issued on the French label Erato: this is the real deal.

Bruckner was certainly one of the greatest organists since Bach, but unfortunately he saw not fit to inscribe any of his great works on paper; so, the honor falls to Franck. Interesting note: in the spring of 1869, Bruckner performed Bach on the Cavaille-Coll organ, La Notre Dame de Paris, before Franck and others. Both Franck and Bruckner were devout Wagnerians; undoubtedly they found much to discuss after the concert. Incidentially, Franck's d-minor Symphony draws many aural parallels with Bruckner's oeuvre of Nos. 0-9. May we infer that Franck's organ works likewise draw parallels with Bruckner's improvisations, now lost in the sea of time? Possibly.

In addition, Franck's String Quartet and Bruckner's String Quintet share aesthetic topoi: pity we don't have more Bruckner chamber works; fortunately we have Franck's Piano Quintet, Violin/Flute Sonata, and piano works. Perhaps we can hear an echo of Bruckner in them.

Oh, yes, let us not forget Franck's oeuvre for harmonium: Bruckner also relished the exquisite timbres and tessitura of the harmonium: he owned a fine instrument, as is seen in the c.1894 photograph of him in his Vienna flat, seated at his Bøsendorfer grande salle piano. The harmonium is directly behind his left shoulder, closed, with the pedals up, and music paper stacked upon it (--by '94, Bruckner was too old and infirm to pump the harmonium any longer). Franck's complete harmonium works performed by Joris Verdin on the Ricercar label (2002) are highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Franck for Organ.......2001-04-24

Marie-Claire Alain's newest recording of Cesar Franck's works for organ is the one by which all others should be compared. We are treated to some of her very best playing...very free and imaginative, and exceedingly interesting. As usual, Mme. Alain has included insightful program and performance notes. It is her playing that provides listeners a deep look into the soul and mind of Franck. The Cavaille-Coll organ at St. Etienne in Caen is superbly recorded, and detailed notes on registrations are provided. You will experience musicianship of the highest order.

4 out of 5 stars The best available.......2001-03-10

Recording the majestic organ at Washington National Cathedral is a daunting task. The acoustics are difficult at best. There is only one recording that showcases this organ at its best (1973, Paul Callaway, organist). This is one LP that I actually took the time to transfer to CD. However, this release with Douglas Major is the next best thing. The performances are spectacular, and the colors of this magnificent instrument are displayed beautifully. However, the inevitable reverberation destorts the clarity of some aspects of the music. A valiant effort at a difficult recording project.
