5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-22

This is a four disc set that includes cantatas by:Alessandro Scarlatti-Caldara-Handel and Giovanni Bonancini. What a treasure trove of music!!!!The cantata, to some extent, is a development from the madrigal that appeared in Italy at the start of the seventeenth century. While the madrigal was refined and delicate, the cantata evolved because composers felt the need to introduce a dramatic narrative element into vocal chamber music and thusly the music took a lighter, wittier turn.Scarlatti is considered as one if the initiators, and also one of the reformers of this genre, whose outlines he established. In his cantatas for a single solo voice and continuo,Scarlatti treats the latter as a true partner of the voice. Caldara, who was Scarlatti's contemporary, played a large part in the development of the chamber cantata for one to five voices. Bonancini, who was essentially centered on opera, nonetheless wrote innumerable cantatas for one or more soloists. Handel's stay in Italy between the years 1706 and 1710 resulted in a time of intense creative activity, and he quite naturally gravitated towards the cantata. One of my favorites of Handels on this disc is:"Splenda l'alba in oriente", Lesne does a very learned and skillful renditon of this music. The lightness of his countertenor voice suits this genre very well. He has good diction and a nice emotional response to the varying moods of the music. Sandrine Piau (soprano) does a nice job of blending and complementing the countertenor tone quality. All in all it's a most enjoyable and varied listening experience.

I want to just say that being a countertenor, it's hard to find a partner who can counter your unique tone quality and timbre. Sandrine Piau is one of the best period sopranos I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. The most pure and beautiful tone you can imagine. She plays off Gerard Lesne as if they are one voice, yet still seperate entities in their roles as musical indivuals in this recording. The selections are nothing short of amazing, and had me hooked from the very first track. Every once of energy has been given to the sensitivity of this unworldly pure music. The Handel pieces are a rare find and a surprise to those who think they know G.F. Handel like the back of their hand. And of course Gerard Lesne is one of the most celebrated countertenors on the stage today. His sound is unique yet still beautiful in that he is keen to preserve the music in its intended context. This recording is an amazing find for those who can't get enough of the countertenor sound, and can't find many recordings of Caldara, and Bonocini.

5 out of 5 stars Dellightful Baroque performances from a masterful contralto.......2004-03-29

One wonders how Virgin Classics manages to produce and market these "Pleasure 4" 4-CD sets for such low prices, but prospective buyers need not worry that they might be getting an inferior product. While an avid lover of Baroque music, before buying this set I had never been aware of contralto Gérard Lesne's name, though I soon noticed that it appears on a number of disks that I already owned--along with the names of great Baroque maestros like Philippe Herreweghe and William Christie and outstanding performers like Fabio Bondi and Véronique Gens. The discography of Lesne and his Il Seminario Musicale is nothing short of astounding in quantity and range, including many disks that have received rave reviews from Amazon reviewers and customers. Lesne is certainly as versatile a countertenor as Andreas Scholl and David Daniels, though he is apparently a little less in the limelight. The cantatas presented here are well arranged so that there is considerable contrast in style and tempo from one piece to the next, assuring that the listener never feels a sense of monotony. Moreover, we have four disks of cantatas each by a different composer, and many of these works will be new to even the average Baroque aficionado. I myself was not even aware of Caldara (c. 1670-1736), ten years younger than Scarlatti, who though "one of the most prolific composers of his generation," gets less than eight minutes on Harmonia Mundi's 15-disk Les Lumieres du Baroque (on the CD called "The Golden Age of the Oratorio"). Bononcini (1670-1747) was an equally prolific writer of vocal music, a pioneer of Italian opera, and an associate--and later rival--of Handel (1685-1759) in London. It is a delight to be able to revel in and compare some of the many delightful cantatas produced more-or-less contemporaneously by these great composers, performed with an alternation of loving gentleness and sprightly vitality by Lesne and ISM with instrumental interludes and accompaniments that can stand with the best of Baroque period performances. Lovers of late 17th and early 18th century music will find these relaxing disks ideal not only for dedicated listening, but also for playing in the background while working, doing household chores, or driving. If you already have some of Lesne's recordings, you will want this set as well, and for those who do not, this set is likely to become the beginning of a Lesne collection you will cherish for years.

Recorded at the Temple de la Villette, Paris, in June 1990. Total time: 67'56".

Disc 2: Alessandro Stradella (1639 - 1682): Motets. 1. Crocifissione e morte die N. S. Giesù Christo. 2. Benedictus Dominus Deus. 3. O vos omnes qui transitis. 4. Chare Jesu suavissime. 5. Lamentatione per il Mercoledi Santo. Performed by Sandrine Piau, soprano, and Gérard Lesne, male alto, with Il Seminario Musicale [Fabrizio Cipriani, Sophie Gevers-Demoures, violins; Bruno Cocset, bass violin and cello; Richard Myron, double bass; Pascal Monteilhet, theorbo; Jean-Charles Ablitzer, positive organ; Blandine Rannou, harpsichord]. Recorded at the Chapelle de l'Ermitage, Versailles, France in March 1995. Total time: 61'38".

The French male alto Gérard Lesne has one of the most fascinating voices to come out of the early music scene, its lovely, smooth and natural timbre being far removed from anything resembling the "crowing" of some eighties' countertenors. Lesne distinguishes himself from the British school of countertenor by his deliberate use of vibrato, something that he has mastered so perfectly that no early music purist will want to fault him, at least not on the repertoire presented here. (I found him a little too operatic when he performed Bach cantatas with Philippe Herreweghe.) The first CD contains four cantatas and two short instrumental pieces by Antonio Caldara, one of those fascinating characters to emerge from the Republic of Venice in the second half of the seventeenth century. The two sonatas played here so delightfully by Il Seminario Musicale are firmly based in the seventeenth century and are very reminiscent of similar works by Arcangelo Corelli. The cantatas on the other hand are highly dramatic (Medea in Corinto) or imitative of nature (Vicino a un rivoletto) and show Caldara not only to be a child of his age but a composer very much worth the listening to. His contemporaries were also of this opinion, and he spent the latter years of his life composing for the Imperial Court in Vienna.

The second CD is devoted to that rather enigmatic composer of a generation earlier, Alessandro Stradella, whose main claim to fame seems to be that he was brutally murdered. Gérard Lesne had already sung the title role in Stradella's oratorio San Giovanni Battista (directed by Mark Minkowski: Stradella: San Giovanni Battista), a recording which received considerable praise in the press, including from the BBC's Edward Greenfield. On this CD Lesne sings two solo motets and then is joined by the lovely French soprano Sandrine Piau for three further sacred pieces. The two harmonize wonderfully, and it is difficult to imagine a better or more engaged performance than this. My only question-mark would be behind the engineering and/or the acoustics which seemed less bright and less convincing than on the Caldara CD.

So, after all that praise, why only four stars? Well, this is a budget priced reissue, and the saving has been made on the documentation. Adelaide de Place's accompanying essay is less than a page long and tells us almost nothing (and the German translation has a hideous misprint [?] in the last sentence which makes Stradella love castrati instead of contrasts!). And there are no texts available, so we never really find out what the beautiful singing is about - a real disadvantage that could make serious listeners try to get hold of the original issues second-hand.

3 out of 5 stars Beatiful music, sung with feeling and meaning.......2000-07-19

At the time of this review the original full price releases (with sung texts and translations) were available from Amazon.de, but for anyone buying this reissue who wants to know what is being sung, here are texts to one of the Italian tracks on the Caldara CD, and one Italian and two Latin tracks on the Stradella CD. This represents about half the music on the 2CD set:

D'improvviso amor ferisce Text by Pietro Ottoboni () Set by Antonio Caldara (1670-1736) Albano, 1712

Giesu Christo Text by Anonymous Set by Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682)

O vos omnes qui transitis per viam Text by Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682) adapted from liturgy. Set by Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682) Rome, c.1670

O vos omnes qui transitis per viam, Fulcite me floribus, stipate me malis, quia amore langueo.

Nites huius mundi fructus, cinosura sis et ductus, chare Jesu, suspiranti.

Valete mundi gloria, solus amor Jesu me delectat illi vivam, in hoc moriar et requiescam.

Chare Jesu suavissime Text by Anonymous Set by Alessandro Stradella (1639-1682)

"Chare Jesu suavissime nil desidero nisi te, coeli pignus iucundissime, cibo dulci nutris me, Chare Jesu suavissime...

Sic dapes amoris in panem latentis laetificant me, sic unda cruoris in vina manentis inebriat me, Chare Jesu suavissime..."

Quis est hic qui tam dulciter alloquitur Deum? Vide Philippum qui totus in charitatis amore conversus ad altissimum prorsus extollitur. Ergi in hac die tanto hoeroi dicato cantemus, celebremus eum.

Canite superi, gaudete mortales, et omnes plaudite. Coelum radiis, terra gaudiis refulgeat, et tanti diei gloriae coelitum cantibus, hominum plausibus celebrentur.

In flamis amoris nunc vere iucundus, ardescat, liquescat laetissimus mundus, et musicis choris dum iuste laetantur, terrae gaudia coelu sequantur.

Expellat iam fletus serenus hic dies, dum venit dum redit duclissima quies, et superum coetus dum iuste laetantur, terrae gaudia coelu sequantur.

Admirabile laetitiae signum, o gaudium vere dignum, dum superi et mortales concordi plausu, cythara tangunt, laudes pangunt, et dulciter exhilarant.

Ergo cantibus aether exultet, tellus resultet, et digno concentu, in tanto concentu, dum resonet melos terrae, plausus ascendat ad coelus. Alleluia.

5 out of 5 stars An exciting discovery of unknown works.......2000-01-30

I find it really puzzling when people write reviews only to complain about the inadequacy of packaging. I'm sure Gerard Lesne had nothing to do with the label's decision to reissue these recordings without texts - so he shouldn't be getting three stars because of that (see one of the reviews below). These are wonderful recordings. CD1 contains four cantatas and two sonatas by the Venetian composer Antonio Caldara. Until recently, Caldara was barely represented on disc, but now there are two exceptional recordings: this one and Maddalena ai Piedi di Cristo/Jacobs (don't miss!). Although three of the cantatas on this disc are relatively conventional pastorales, the fourth one, Medea in Corinto, is anything but striking. Caldara demonstrates genuine dramatic skills, tracing Medea's famous revenge from the moment she first realizes Jason's been unfaithful to the moment she seals her decision to punish Jason by summoning the demons to carry out the deed. Lesne's superb intonation renders the character of Medea almost jarringly real. Who needs sleeve notes? CD2 features five motets by Alessandro Stradella, another relatively unknown Italian who really deserves to be heard. (don't miss Stradella's oratorio San Giovanni Battista/Minkowski, Erato 2292-45739-2, also with Lesne - buy it, you'll thank me). Each of the motets on this disc is structurally distinct, but what unites them is Stradella's remarkable gift as a melodist. Lesne is joined here by soprano Sandrine Piau, his frequent singing partner. They make a memorable vocal combination. gkolomietz@yahoo.com

    5 out of 5 stars A treasure!.......1999-07-07

Virgin has been very generous pairing these 2 formidable recordings and giving it away at such modest price. Gerad Lesne is not only the greatest countertenor around, he is one of the finest artists in the music world. His musicianship, his voice, everything in him tells. And these Stradella motets are gorgeous. Don't miss this!

4 out of 5 stars Why isn't Caldara better known?.......1999-06-30

Caldara used to be one of the really big names of European music until Mozart came along and people like Caldara and Jommelli were forgotten. Then when Mendelssohn came along it was 'back to Bach' and the roccoco Italians were passed over again. At the time of this review the only major Caldara work in the catalogue is his Passion recorded by Fabio Biondi (also on Virgin). Here we have a major early-classical cantata, Medea, with shorter pieces, and a second CD with cantatas by Stradella (who it has to be said is more famous for being stabbed by a jealous husband than for his compositions).

Gerard Lesne is a little more mannered than his Germanic rival Andreas Scholl, but that is an advantage with at this kind of material that tends toward mannerism anyway, and the Caldara disc is one of the best things he did while on Virgin Veritas' books. I was so struck with the singing on both of these discs after buying it as a 2-for-1 release that I eventually tracked down the two original full price releases (which at the time were still available on Amazon.de) so as to be able to enjoy listening with the texts and translations to hand. But it is a shame about the lack of texts here - something of an insult to two of the best recordings in the Veritas back catalogue.

The Caldara dates from 1991, the Stradella from 1995.

5 out of 5 stars Great recordings of lesser-known gems.......2000-07-25

This disc is a great introduction to the shorter choral works of Finzi, Britten, and Holst. The two major works on the disc--Finzi's "Requiem da Camera" and Britten's "Cantata misericordium"--deserve many more performances than they normally receive. The third movement of the Requiem, "Only a man harrowing clods," in particular, is quite haunting. The Holst Psalm-settings are inventive as well.

The performances are first-rate, as is the recording--the singing is quite clear and distinct, perhaps as a result of the small numbers of the Britten Singers. The soloists do an excellent job, and are well-teamed in the Cantata.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A joyful Christmas box of many rare musical jewels........2001-12-10

Laserlight has the rights to so much recorded music - excellent, good, indifferent, bad - & of such varying sound quality, that it's difficult to rate the label's bargain compilations. Most are afflicted with "excerpt-itis," the "greatest hits" disease. However, some compiler with an interesting ear for the offbeat & a sense of humor put this fine five-CD Christmas box together. He or she did so by leaning on some less familiar music & by relying largely on good performances from ye olde East Germany ensembles & conductors, (as do Koch-Schwann & Berlin Classics labels, at higher prices).

The #1 disk is a solid performance of The Nutcracker Suite (also issued as a single disk by Laserlight) by Peter Wohlert conducting the Berlin Symphony (not to be confused with the Berlin Philharmonic). With that over-cooked chestnut out of the way, this compilation gets interesting.

We get some venerable excerpts of Bach cantatas, oratorios, motets & Lutheran hymns, performed by Fidicinia Capella, New Leipzig Bach Collegium Musicum, & the German Bach Soloists, all respectable ensembles. Edita Gruberova even joins in "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen." Plus an earful of grand organ preludes.

Handel is represented by a happy section of "Water Music" & a piece for brass instruments from his oratorio, "Judas Maccabaeus." What, no "Halleluah Chorus?" Believe me, you don't need it! But it's here all the same.

Mozart checks in with the lovely, too brief, "Ave verum Corpus," motet for chorus, strings, & organ, K. 618. We also get snappy, dutiful baroque contributions from Vivaldi, Corelli & Purcell.

The remainder of the set is filled out with music from: Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky; Francesco Onofrio Manfredini; Johann Ludwig Krebs; George Friedrich Kauffmann; John the Elder Alcock; Michel Corrette; Michael Praetorius; Johann David Heinichen; Johann Heinrich Schmelzer; & Giuseppe Torelli. The inclusion of these marvelous obscurities pushes this bargain compilation over the top.

I give it four stars because the performances & sound quality vary considerably. But the compensation comes from hours of joyously felt Nativity music, a good deal of it unfamiliar yet beautiful all the same. Load all five into the CD changer, hit the random button, relax & enjoy your spiced eggnog with family & friends.

The five CDs are titled: 1. The Nutcracker 2. Classical Christmas 3. Christmas Music for Trumpet & Organ 4. Johann Sebastian Bach - Christmas Music 5. Baroque Christmas Music. They can be purchased individually.
