excellent overview of contemporaneous classic music.

Should be continued, plenty more 20th-century composers to be discovered.

This 2 cd set consists of, as the title indicates, various 20c pieces or movements from the Naxos catalog. Sound quality is uniformly high, although for some such as Stockhausen's it's not clear if that's good or bad. What is excellent is the variety of the collection--some familiar (Debussy), others not, some pretty, others intentionally weird. Few will find every piece to his or her taste, but many listeners who do not spend much time on 20c music will find something to like. Overall, a great introduction to a period of much off-putting, yes, but also much compelling music.

5 out of 5 stars Very exciting, with maximum impact from brass and woodwinds.......2005-11-11

The reviewer below who speaks of the "behemoth" sound on this CD is living in another world. In fact, this reading of the Shostakovich First Cello Concerto is performed by a chamber orchestra from Australia--the only reduced version I know of--and as a result the brass and woodwind stand out over the smaller string body. In the opening movement the solo cello fights for prominence with the first horn, who plays with a gritty, edgy tone--very gripping.

Peter Wispelwey isn't well known in the U.S. (if at all), but this Dutch virtuoso is the real thing. His phrasinng is more incisive and interesting than, say, Maisky's on DG with Michael Tilson Thomas and the LSO. He is inward wehn called for but can explode at any time. His tone is amplified by the engineers, of course, but it seems to be on a leaner scale than a power cellist like Lynn Harrell or Rostropovich. Australian conductor Richard Tognetti does a very good job keeping the screws tight on the tension; his Austrailian Chamber Orch. is fine but would never be mistaken for virtuosos.

The disc is filled out, none too generously, with Kodaly's exceedingly long (30 min.) sonata for solo cello. Wispelwey fairly tears through it. It's a work beloved by cellists who want the whole spotlight, for obvious reasons, and shows off Kodaly's imagination in finding so much to say through one instrument. The idiom is halfway between Kodaly's folk-based orchestral works and something more fierce and modern. I don't quite have the patience to listen to the whole thing.

Overall, this is an overlooked performance of the Shostakovich that has something unique to say through its unusual soundscape.

    4 out of 5 stars Great 20th Century music.......2000-07-13

The Shostakovich composition here is an excellent piece of work, and Florilegium with Pieter Wispelwey make an exciting, inspiring, mostly well-recorded version of it (the only problem is the high pitched squeaking of the piccolos - or maybe even flutes - which overtake the entire orchestra at one point). The composition veers toward Danny Elfman territory at times, acheiving a huge, lumbering behemoth sort of sound which hovers between the comic and the menacing. Very successful overall, and a significant addition to the cello concerto cannon.

The Kodaly sonata is one of the best compositions for solo cello in this century, and here the performance is outstanding, far superior to Yo-Yo Ma's dry rendition on "Solo." I recommend this CD with no hesitations.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be missed!.......2004-02-24

What I have heard until now from this amazing cellist (a live Prokovjev Sinfonia Concertante, and his Poulenc/Debussy/Franck EMI disc) all bespeaks of a truly extraordinary talent, and this disc amply confirms the impression. It easily stands comparison with the much liked version I already owned by Heinrich Schiff (Philips); in fact, I prefer this new recording over the older one on just about every count. In some ways Müller-Schott is a Schiff-like cellist: he eschews empty gestures and slick showmanship, and there is a great humanity to his music-making. What makes him an absolute winner is the astonishing delicacy of his playing, the crispness of articulation, and his affectionate shading of tone color. He is of course playing a wonderful instrument; there isn't even a hint of the nasality that so easily mars the higher cello-regions, which Haydn explores with such relish in these works. But there is much more. As soon as the tone darkens, MS summons a completely new voice from his instrument; the bravura of the C-major's opening, tackled with power and gusto, is contrasted with a sotto voce that instantly draws the listener into a highly personal sphere of quiet melancholia. At times the sound is reduced, quite daringly and startlingly, to a mere whisper. In such passages the music suddenly acquires greater portent; a foreshadowing of the Romantic era realized through music-making that remains stylishly eighteenth-century in every detail and is clearly "authentically"-informed, including non-vibrato strings in the orchestra. While I always considered these pieces highly entertaining and beautifully crafted but ultimately innocent works of art, listening to this disc I found myself getting goose bumps on several occasions, in addition to assorted other affective symptoms usually (for me) associated with the more emotionally challenging works of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The partnership with the ACO (judging from the photographs quite as youthful as MS himself) is everything one could wish for. Where they share the limelight with the soloist, delightful conversational exchanges ensue (I was tempted to think of a Jane Austen drawing room full of chattering youngsters); elsewhere they provide discrete but sympathetic accompaniment; and in the introductory passages the playing, with an apt touch of ruggedness, exudes an infectious joy (brilliant horns!). All these glories are excellently reproduced by the Orfeo recording team, though the balance might have favored the woodwinds a little more.
That the Good Lord at times dispenses his gifts rather undemocratically is proved by MS's own, extremely skillful arrangements for cello of the Beethoven violin romances. The result is as convincing as it is intriguing, and I'm not only inclined to agree with the booklet that had Beethoven heard them, they would have appealed to him, but rather suspect they might have prompted him to discard the violin versions altogether. A very clever makeweight for the main works, that together just fall short of filling a disc.
I would say, if you have a liking for these works, or for Haydn, or for the cello, let alone for all three (as I do), this disc is a must-have. Inevitably it will elicit a great liking for Daniel Müller-Schott as well; you will just have to learn to cope with that - which I'm sure in time will become increasingly easy, as this musician seems set to become a highly demanded presence on the international concert stage as well as in the recording studio's. A sympathetic co-fan thought my assessment that MS would reach star status within another year was somewhat optimistic, and I suppose he is right; that, however, merely speaks volumes on the shortcomings of the music business, and has nothing to do with the mind-boggling talent on display here.

4 out of 5 stars Make sure you check out the enhanced PC Disc 2!.......2002-10-19

Every Galway fan must get the 2 disc set for their collection. The enhanced disc 2 allows you to view Sir James Galway in interviews, photos and showing you his daily routine. It was such a treat! I was so pleased with the pc option that it gets more use than the audio portion but all Galway fans will enjoy these cds.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy does it again!.......1998-11-08

I have looked through this great CD ROM from Jimmy Galway. It is a must for all flautists or as Jimmy would say flutists. In it he shows us all how a dedicated and fine musician and humourist as he is can reach the top and stay there with his wonderful humour and such clearly defined playing that improves with every album he releases.

He has collected here on the music CD the very best in interesting and inspiring pieces. I have just been to his Daytona Concert here in Florida and he and Jeannie his wife sounded exactly as fresh and exciting as his discs do.

This dual CD set is worth twicw as much as Amazon are asking - you must get it not only because it is so good but as an historic and individualistic record of the very best flute player we have this side of heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Earthly Delights.......2000-07-31

A terrific way to become acquainted with the enormous breadth of Australian orchestral music. Carl Vine tends to have two sides to his musical personality - a clean, athletic neoclassicism, and an equally clean and athletic romanticism. If either of these imply that his music is in any way backward-looking or conservative, think again. His works often contain elaborate and highly complex rhythmic constructions and orchestral writing, and have a distinctive, 21st-century character. Mind you, the Oboe concerto is among the most conservative and least interesting of his orchestral works, but is worth the listen anyway. If it whets your curiosity, I can heartily recommend any of the Symphonies, which represent the heart of his ouvre. Peter Sculthorpe's Piano Concerto is one of his simplest and starkest creations, but is no less impressive for all that. It is not a virtuoso display piece, tending to treat the piano as a sort of gamelan-like collection of sonorities. The orchestral sound is also very distinctive, with its emphasis on separate groups of strings, double reed wind instruments, heavy brass, and a large but austere-sounding percussion section. David Lumsdaine's piece, for which the disc is named, is a large-scale and elaborately structured Cello Concerto. It is somewhat more accessible than some of Lumsdaine's earlier pieces, without losing any of their complexity. The best way to describe its sound-world is to simply say that it is a wonderful musical depiction of the Heironymus Bosch painting from which it sprang. THe performances are all highly committed, and the sound is excellent.
