5 out of 5 stars Who is the best Recorded Chopinist?.......2003-02-24

It's a pity that this should go out of stock.

Had Rosenthal, or Hofmann, or Cortot had got Chopin best and needless to say in this regard Rachmaninoff is a most worthy reference.

One might assume that Rosenthal had got it best as he first learned the piano from a Chopin pupil, to be finished off by Liszt himself. But Rosenthal perhaps had too much intellectuality and his playing is too "healthy" ( in contrast to Cortot) to make him the rightful Chopin successor.

Even though Cortot had got the essence Chopin so well. Yet, one also doubts if Chopin would play with so many improvisation.

Rachmaninoff's "steel arms" couldn't get any nearer either, albeit that he had a "heart of gold". Not even Sauer, Simon Barere, or Friedman...? There is no perfection.

It's most fortunate that we have such a rich varieties of recorded legacy. So, despite the fact that the classical music lovers are so diversified in taste and opinion, and the fact that even amongst the most sophisticated of them, most would nevertheless develope and change, - didn't Nicholai Rubinstein first refuted and then subsequently championed Tsaichovsky's No. 1 Piano Conerto -- we will find something that suits our taste. Yes, music is great and inclusive. Just let our ears with an open mind be our ultimate guide.

Coming back to this record. This is a collection of 1930 (Valses), 1935 (Etudes), 1929 & 1937 (Mazurkas) recording. The recordings are good enough for one to see Rosenthal's pianism and for the enjoyment of Chopin's music. Surface noise is not too bad. What is really bad was the fact that when Rosenthal first started recording, he was rather old and having lost his power to thunder.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Chopinist of All Times.......2003-02-10

Definitely one of, if not the greatest of all Chopinists of all times.

Rosenthal started off as a pupil of Chopin's pupil when small and later became Liszt's favoured pupil. He was a venerable colleague of Brahms, Strauss, Saint-Saen and Anton Rubunstein; his admirers included Hofmann and Moiseiwitsch just to name a few.

We don't have many Rosenthal records and when he started to make records, he was already in advanced age. Nonetheless, his Chopin as recorded here can still rival those by Rachmaninoff and Hofmann, and there is good sense in prefering him to Cortot if the purpose is to uncover Chopin's pianism.

Amongst the more assessible Rosenthal records, the transfer here is surprisingly good, more than acceptable in every way despite a little bit of surface noise--they are mostly recorded in mid 30's after all. It managed to capture a most delightful piano sound with all the colours and nuances of Rosenthal's playing, giving you a full picture his sense of music as well as his great pianism albeit in his late age. Even among all Liszt's recorded pupils, this is probably the best we could get our hand on.

After listening to Rosenthal, one couldn't stop feeling that something's wrong with the direction of pianism nowadays and I don't just mean piano banging... Rosenthal is definitely a pianist of the highest calibre and is almost as inspiring as Schnabel to listen to.

A most delightful CD and a nice place to start exploring Rosenthal. Highly recommended to all.
