25 Piano Favorites.......2007-01-09

This is my favorite classical CD since it is geared to a wide audience. Many of my friends and acquaintances enjoy it, too.

Good for the price............2005-11-30

I listen to this CD while reading or when I need inspiration to play the piano. There are many classic pieces here that will have many recognizable sections to the non classical music fans. The sound quality is not amazing but the essence and technical difficulty of these pieces can still be heard. Most of the songs are under 5 mins and there is a mix of faster and slower tempos.

This is a bargain bin CD that you usually see at Fry's Electronics. There are more detailed and comprehensive collections out there but for 5 bucks this isn't bad and you basically get what you expect. There are much better classical CD's out there of course but for a beginner compilation album, this one has a great price.

Wonderful relaxing and soothing music.......2005-09-02

This cd of piano classics has become one of my favorites. Since I am a full-time student and work out of my home the music relaxes me during times of rest.

The Sound Quality Really Bugs Me.......2004-08-26

This is a good intro CD to famous piano pieces. However, the sound quality is really *poor*. Of course, what do you expect for the price? I'm sure there are better Piano Sample CDs out there that sound much better. It's worth the extra money, trust me.

Good Disc for the Price.......2004-01-19

A good compilation of excerpts from the rich and vast piano repertoire. Sure they are merely excerpts and are meant to just introduce the piano to someone unfamiliar with the instrument or classical music, but that doesn't mean that an experienced person can't just pop it into the CD player and enjoy.

While there's no classic recordings here or big names, most of the tracks are well played and acceptable in sound quality. There are some interesting pieces here that are unfamiliar to most, such as the Dvorak Humoresque or the Paderewski Minuet, as well as classics such as the Debussy Clair de Lune or the Mozart Concerto.

Two discs each, in individual deluxe folders, from the archives of Decca, DGG, and Philips........featuring Claudio Arrau, Mitsuko Uchida, Vladimir Horowitz, Maurizio Pollini, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Emil Gilels, Martha Argerich, Wilhelm Kempff, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, and Alfred Brendel........what a list, huh?

And, Wait!.....It gets Better!!! Included on each individual collection are rare, long out of print, recordings....the best of each artist's familiar recordings, and....unknown, never-released recordings.....could it get any better than this???

While the presentation of these recordings simply could never match or meet the level of the performances themselves (lucky us that they were recorded and preserved so we may hear them again and again, just as fresh and wonderful as the first time), the package IS pretty darned AWESOME!!! The whole collection, book included, fits inside a perfectly proportioned Steinway Piano shaped box, complete with opening lid and support to hold it up, revealing the frame and strings below, which also lifts up to reveal the booklet and individual folders and discs beneath. The entire "piano" itself slips into an oversized slipcase.

What a unique and beautiful set this truly is. Sadly, it was released as a deluxe set in very few numbers. But, luckily, the individual two disc sets by each artist are available separately, so at least the recordings are available still to those who want them.***

Luckily, I knew about this collection many many months before it's limited release and had pre-ordered my set (very happy bear, indeed). It's a joy just to look at this set, and also to know that these "performances" are here in my home for me to enjoy over and over again and again.

To my knowledge, I am unaware of individual companies working together before (Decca, DGG, Philips, and Steinway in this case) to present this type of collection as a "unified" set, and we truly are very lucky beneficiaries of this wonderful partnership of these companies.

My only "complaint"......the outer slipcase that the "piano box" slides into is made of a very inferior weight of paperboard to support such a heavy presentation as this, and is so flimsy that it will not stand up to much use before it simply disintigrates. Sort of too bad, as the rest of the set/presentation is so first rate...shame on you folks...I can't think of anybody who would not have paid a few dollars more for a suitable slipcase for this beautiful set. ~operabruin

Steinway Ledgends.......2007-03-09

The quality of the pianos and recording is breath taking says my friend, a professional tuner and former buyer of American & European pianos . And I was just stunned by the playing of these masters...the Liszt pieces of Kempff were were a revelation as was Gilels, and the supreme Horowitz..What is astounding to me is the presence of the piano ( played with a moderately good system only); it is as if they were there in the room.

Backhaus was among the giants of 20th-century keyboard artists, renowned for his solid--some would say stolid--Beethoven and Brahms interpretations. The younger Backhaus was a more overtly virtuosic pianist with a wide repertory. This invaluable Pearl set covers his British recordings, starting in 1908 when he was only 24, and it includes composers and works he abandoned in later years when he pared his programs down to essential masterworks. So we get his only recordings of Rachmaninoff, whom he admired as the greatest among living piano composers, along with Bach, Scarlatti, and others. Backhaus's dazzling virtuosity can be heard in his abridged Brahms Paganini Variations, the Liszt, La Campanella, with its marvelously even runs, and the Weber, Perpetuum Mobile, with precise articulation at fast speeds, among many other examples. Some of his early electrical recordings fill out disc two, sounding fresher than most of the acoustics. Seth Winner's transfers on both well-filled discs are uniformly fine. Collectors of historical recordings will want these rarities. --Dan Davis

Like the previous reviewer, I have only recently learned about all the different temperaments. Honestly I have to say that the differences between the equal vs. Prelleur Fantasie are very subtle; perhaps I haven't listened for a long enough time to pick everything up.

I'll have to say, however, that I don't find the 1/4 comma meantone version bland at all, but rather very interesting because of how hilariously off it can sound at times. That was a difference I picked up right away, (well, I guess I have to admit that 41 cents is a pretty big interval to be off by... ), which pretty much overshadows the "habit-forming" pure thirds.

A real ear-opener.......2004-05-26

I'm a lifelong music lover, but just recently started learning about the history of temperaments (as in Stuart Isacoff's entertaining book on the subject). I got this CD to see if I could really hear the difference between Meantone, well temperaments, and equal temperament. At first I wasn't sure, but the more I became familiar with the compositions and the pianist's style, the more surprised I became at the marked contrasts in tone and coloration.

The Mozart Fantasie recorded successively in Meantone, Prelleur (a graduated well temperament), and equal temperament is the best basis for comparison. It demonstrates in brilliantly conclusive fashion how superior the well temperament is for Mozart's compositions. The other two tunings sound dispirited and bland by comparison. The generations of musicians and listeners who have been restricted almost exclusively to equal temperament are the poorer for it.

Murray Perahia isn't about flash and, as this diverse collection of music reveals, the pianist's true brilliance is his dedication to the integrity of each composition. Scarlatti's Sonata in B Minor leads things off and reveals Perahia's recent love for baroque music (check out his excellent recording of Bach's English Suites Nos. 1, 3, & 6). Chopin's Ballade No. 1 seemingly unfolds itself in the pianist's hands. Perahia plays close attention to the composition's details but never loses sight of its free-spirited nature. Of course, nothing is quite so free-spirited here as Bartók's Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, where Perahia showcases his faultless technique on the dissonant and adventurous work. Another highlight is found on disc 2, where Perahia leads the English Chamber Orchestra in fine form through Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25. --Jason Verlinde

So, for the puss who has everything, including a copy of Cats, comes this selection of 16 instantly recognizable classical melodies. The idea is a musical portrait of the daily routine of a pampered pet, the notes offering a brief, cute description to go with each piece. The connections are rather arbitrary--a Dvorák serenade for a catnap, a Shostakovich dance for a spider hunt, and various bits of Handel's Water Music and Vivaldi's Four Seasons for a spot of ornithology and an incident with a fur ball. You might find that your feline sleeps through the whole thing, the album providing more enjoyment for the owner who simply wants to relax with some undemanding classical moods after a day working like a dog. The music on this cd is typical soft classical fare played reasonably well--overall, no different than any bargain basement classical cd you get for half the price. Except...this cd has a picture of a silly cat. My overgrown spouse has two Bobos (one, now called Comet) who she claims have ears for classical music. Well, I for one, think these claims (and the similar claims of others) are bunk. Comet runs wild throughout our tiny little house no matter what music is on the stereo (you should see the puny-brained imbecile run wild when I play that screeching banshee Keith Jarrett!). And this "calming" classical cd is no exception. I'll admit, the music is personally soothing, but to claim this is music for a cat, is simply nonsense.

Very helpful during a stressful time.......2003-01-24

I bought this CD for my cats for Christmas. During the holidays one of my cats began losing her battle with heart disease. We basically hospiced her until she died peacefully. This CD seemed to really calm her and the rest of the cats (as well as me). Once I began playing it for her, she seemed more relaxed and comfortable. It helped us all out during a rough time. I play it still for my other cats who really do seem to listen. If you have a cat, you should give this a try. The music is all very beautiful and well performed.

The music on this album is so beautiful! It takes you to a completely tranquil state. This really is music for you and your cat! My tabby falls asleep when I play this and he is usually very energetic. Definately a must have for classical music fans, cat owners, or people who have to deal with stress!
