    A disc of operatic arias by Schubert? Did Schubert write great operas? No. Only an academic or devout enthusiast would want to sit through them. But did he write great opera arias? Occasionally. After all, the odd one proved a starting point for what would subsequently turn into a song. And this anthology includes a number from Alfonso und Estrella, which was later fed into Winterreise's "Tauschung." Many of the better arias are for baritone, reflecting Schubert's friendship with the singer Johann Michael Vogl, so there was plenty of scope for the baritone here, Oliver Widmer, to select rewarding items. Steering clear of the comparatively well-known Fierrabras and Die Verschworenen, Vogl has preferred to give a platform to the early operas Teufels Lustschloss and Die Freunde von Salamaka, and to fragments like Die Burgschaft and Adrast. The singing is attractive--agile, light, and sympathetically responsive--and the playing more accomplished than one might expect. It makes a welcome tag-on to Hyperion's Schubert Lieder series.         Der Graf von Gleichen will never be remembered as an opera "gem", however the Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music's beautifully sung recording of this work is a must for any opera lover's library. The opera was composed during the last days of Schubert's short life and was not finished before his death. Therfore, Der Graf had never been staged let alone recorded by any arts organization of significance. Enter CCM. The singers and orchestra bring to life a work that history has set aside. Schubert's compositional strengths are evident in his hundreds of song treatments, and the arias in this opera reflect those strengths. For instance, the role of Suleika, gorgeously sung by the warm yet innocent soprano of Gwendolyn Coleman, is highlighted by arias resembling the Schubert
        lieder for which she is named. Ms. Coleman, by the way, is just one of numerous talented singers on this recording who are gracing the concert halls of the world. To hear them, buy this CD!
