1 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2001-06-21

I purchased this CD when I was looking for an addition to my library in the Baroque section. This music is an example of the very finest in Baroque composition and is well interpreted by St Martin in the Field. Number one of the two CD's that I received was stolen along with my portable player. I was so impressed by the music that I ordered another package even though it resulted in a duplicate of #2. As I write this I am listening to the CD and can only be amazed by both the beauty of the music and the deliciously rich presentation by the orchestral strings.

5 out of 5 stars Conerti Grossi Op 6.......2000-10-27

There are many ways to enjoy the music on this CD. As with many recordings from the Baroque era this one makes great wallpaper. I find that hearing it while I do other things brightens my day without being intrusive. Although ambient music is usually credited as a product of the twentieth century, I find that this music also creates a delightful ambience. On the level of musical history, Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) is an interesting composer. Handel and Locatelli are some of his more famous students. The Brandenburg Concertos reveal that Bach also was influenced by his music. Timothy A. Smith identifies Corelli as a "critical link in the evolution of the Baroque concerto grosso and sonata formats." He is credited as a master of the trio sonata which became the source of the Classical era symphonic form. A pioneer of violin technique and originator of synchronized bowing in an orchestra, he was hailed as the greatest virtuoso of the violin in his time because of his technical mastery. In modern vernacular, he was a "Rock Star". Corelli's place in history makes this music interesting to me, knowing that he was held in high esteem by great composers. This is not to suggest that the music is uninteresting. I find that when I pay attention, I am amply rewarded. C.#3 in C minor has an arresting beginning with sustained chords which remind me of some of Haydn's symphonies. C.#10 in C major breaks with tradition as it contains five movements. This may not seem scandalous to us three centuries removed, however, these types of details provoked prolonged and acrimonious dispute, according Christopher Hogwood who wrote the notes. He writes that a notorious scandal erupted when, in one of Corelli's Opus 2 trios, it was suspected he had used consecutive fifths. Both the Preludio and Adagio are grand and the Allegro approaches a frenetic pace. C#9 in F major introduces the Adagio with a lilting melody on a theorbo (lute). All of the Concerti are great, even so, these are the ones I enjoy the most. You may find others which you enjoy. If you are interested in one of the greatest composers of the Baroque period or in music which is pleasent, this CD will be interesting to you.

5 out of 5 stars I think that this is a wonderfull compolation of music!.......1999-02-04

I think that this recording is great! I enjoy playing many of these same works in the orchestra that I am in! I strongly recomend it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, fresh, intense, serene........1998-11-28

I'm not really educated when it comes to classical music. I just know what I like. This recording of Arcangelo Corelli is absolutely astounding! Each and every piece on both disks is superb. It's soothing and yet alive.

#10 Grave - Andante Largo is oh so short, but soulfully melodious and intricate.

The violeins in #14 Allemanda: Allegro are crisp and clean.

#15 Corrente: Vivace is elegant.

If you like Vivaldi and Scarlatti you will like these two disk. Well worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful budget recordings of Corelli's most recorded Opus from the Slovak Republic.......2005-11-29

Naxos has done a great service to music lovers everywhere offering this release of Corelli's Opus 6 Concerti Grossi by the Capella Istropolitana/Jaroslav Krechek, a beautiful digital recording made in 1990. The musicians of Capella Istropolitana, a large chamber orchestra made up of members of the Slovak Philharmonic, play very well here, and surpass many other recordings of these famous works. (Incidentally, Capella Istropolitana is named after a Medieval university located in Bratislava.) Capella Istropolitana is an modern, NOT period instrument ensemble, and play with appropriate vibrato, but are definitely in a Classical, Chamber type of sound for Corelli's music. They play with appropriate heft where needed, but are always on the lean side, emphasizing the delicacy of textures and sound called for by Corelli's string writing.

My high praise for Volume 1 of Corelli's Opus 6 also applies to Volume 2, by the same forces. I would get both volumes of these lovely works: there are many pleasures to be had, and for so little money you get great sound AND performances. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Music.......2004-12-29

Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Op.6 created a sensation when first performed, were the model for composers such as Handel in his own Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, and have won raves up until today.

I first heard a recording of the Corelli Concerti Grossi, Op. 6 performed by the English Concert, conducted by Trevor Pinnock.

This is glorious music. The question of whether one prefers performances on modern versus period instruments is highly subjective and a matter of taste. I tend to prefer this recording (modern instruments) - I own two period recordings: Pinnock/ English Concert, and Goodman/ Brandenburg Consort. But perhaps my greatest pleasure is seeing the reactions of friends hearing this wonderful music for the first time. Excellent performances; ditto for Concertos 7-12.

Very full, immediate sound.

5 out of 5 stars Baroque Fun.......2000-10-20

Corelli's Concerti Grossi Op. 6 is baroque music at it's finest; tuneful, jaunty and lots of fun. If the first Concerto Grosso on this CD cannot convert you to a Corelli and Baroque fan, well, chances are nothing will. Fortunately, Naxos has recorded Op. 6 with the excellent Capella Istropolitana conducted by Jaroslav Krecheck, so we now have an superb version on modern instruments at a bargain price. So those who don't know this music can try it without risking too much capital.

The Capella Istropolitana is a very good band in both intonation and ensemble, and Krecheck's direction is both fleet and stylish. And while modern instruments are used, period performance practices are observed with regards to quick tempos and rhythmic bounce. So unless you cannot live without period instruments, this version represents an excellent hybrid of styles and is recommended without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars The best stealth Christmas music ever.......2007-01-10

For people who just can't bear to listen to another Christmas carol, this is the album. Completely instrumental, this is early music written with Christmas in mind, but it is in no way recognizable as Christmas music. These little heard pieces are brilliantly conducted and performed (as always) by Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert. I heard tracks 5 & 6 on the radio a few weeks before Christmas, when my spirits were suffering an uncharacteristic low, and found myself so completely moved by the beauty them, I had to have the CD. I didn't know what the other pieces would be like, but they all turned out to be perfection. Each selection is just the right amount of colour and flourish, moving from lovely largos to vivd vivaces without ever leaving the listener reaching to turn the volume down or off. I found the entire "1 hour plus" album thoroughly uplifting and easy to get lost in. And best of all, I finally have an album that expresses musically how I feel about Christmas, that doesn't irritate anyone (including me). All that and a great Amazon price. What more can you ask?!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful! Corelli sheds his skin!!.......2003-04-26

These concerti are an awful lot of fun. Anyone familiar with any of the livelier baroque instrument renditions of Corelli's opus 6 will know they're vivacious to begin with, but Sardelli and his band put them absolutely into orbit.

Sardelli makes a strong case in the liner notes for "doubling up" the strings with flutes, oboes and trumpets (this being a practice in which Corelli himself inulged during his lifetime if he had the right instrumentalists.)

On disc, the whole thing is brought off remarkably well, and it works. The woodwinds and trumpets sound completely natural (perhaps too natural...will I go back to my pinnock version ever?)

In all seriousness, for purists, this will not supplant the need for a "standard" version of Opus 6; one must admit that there are passages that sound like an interesting mix of Corelli, Handel, and Vivaldi after tre bicchieri di vino, but all in all its a great unexpected treat. GRAB THESE DISCS WHILE YOU CAN. They're ..., lively, and the most musical fun you'll have with your clothes on.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness from whom??.......2002-08-18

From the first moment I heard a concerto from this disc on public radio, I was overwhelmed. The sheer joy conveyed by these musicians make these works listenable, and listenable time after time. I'm not a fan of most baroque music offerings on CD but this disc by Modo Antiquo and Signor Sardelli is one of the greatest of them all. Tactus' sonics are impeccable but the quality and finish of the playing is superior to anything Karl Richter or Trevor Pinnock ever fashioned. It's the style of the playing that's key to this recording's magic. Yes it is spirited with vivacious tempi but the added winds, the superbly timed rubato and the musical closure Sardelli gets this ensemble to communicate to the listener is something I've rarely heard on ANY CD.

I highly recommend this disc to everyone who loves music because the artists here must love what they're doing. Bravissimo!!!!!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by "Period Instuments".......2007-01-17

This is one of the first classical CDs I bought, well before I new the difference between period and modern instruments, etc. Contrary to Stan Vernnoy's review two doors down, I beleive you should like the music for what it is, not the instruments it is played upon. Also, to my ears, Corelli's music sounds much better on the period instruments. The modern instruments sound too sweet and glossy to me. Not to say that period instruments would work for, say a Rachmaninov symphony! It'a all a matter of preference.

    5 out of 5 stars time travel.......2002-02-13

This CD will take you back in time to another era...played on period instruments, it has a light, sweet feel to it. Very even in tempo and dynamics, it's ideal for a quiet dinner or studying.
The period instruments don't have the sonority of their modern counterparts, so if you prefer the rich sound of the instruments that are normally in use today, this recording is not for you.

There's a charming simplicity to these pieces, and they're played with incredible precision by the San Francisco based Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. This 17 person group led by Nicholas McGegan (who plays fortepiano and harpsichord) is superb, and it's also fascinating to hear what this music sounded like in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

Recorded in '89, the total time is 59'41, and I love the cover of this CD, as well as that of Volume 2, Op. 6. 7-12, so bold and contemporary looking, they're Cigoli marble inlays from 1559-1613.

4 out of 5 stars Vibrant by itself, yet mellow enough for background.......2001-07-08

I've never before heard of Corelli but I very much like this disc. I actually bought the "Classical Express" version of this very same recording at .... Very beautiful pieces. I am a fan of the Seiji Ozawa conduction of Vivaldi's Four Seasons and I find this a great companion. The Vivaldi piece is clearly centered around the violin soloist. I suppose find this disc amiable because of the similar sound. (violins and harpsichord) The composition is subdued enough to read or study to yet can easily be enjoyed alone. The pieces are lively enough for isolated listening with a cup of morning coffee. I'm sadly uneducated in music theory so I hope this review's subjectivity still encourges a purchase. A delightful discovery for a 22-year-old.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST have CD for all music lovers.......2001-01-28

Corelli is an underappreciated master. Classical music stations tend to play his "Christmas Concerto" around the holidays and that is about it. These pieces, and especially THIS recording are exquite. How often do you get to hear a Theorbo? This music transcends 300 years of music history. Several of the pieces point directly to 20th and 21st century "new age" music or so called "Dawg Music" by David Grisman and Darol Anger (David Grisman Quintet). A spectacular collection and recorded with incredible presence on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely recording at the very least.......2000-10-01

I am a relative newcomer to classical music despite piano lessons (K-8) as a child and some minimal exposure as a child and as an adult, and I do not have a strong opinion about the period vs. modern instument controversy. I do however, have a few period instrument recordings (Gardiner, Biondi, Herreweghe) and more than like them. In no instance do I think that any of the instuments in these recordings or the recordings taken as wholes sound bad in any way--nor do the recordings done on these instruments appear to "lack something"--and that inculdes this recording of Corelli's Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, 1-6. Not only that, I think that this particular recording is very well done, and the works themselves are wonderful. This makes this CD (and undoubtedly also the one of Nos. 7-12, which will take me a while longer to purchase) absolutely lovely and well worth the price, especially for people interested in baroque music.

        Album Description

This special collection of seasonal works includes over an hour of the most moving and beautiful Christmas compositions of Europe's Baroque era. The instrumental music of Celestial Christmas 3 is a fabulous addition to any listener's compilation of Christmas recordings. Baroque instrumental music is distinguished by the all-pervasive basso continuo: an instrumental bass line played on a low melody instrument, with expressive harmonies created on keyboard, strings, or plucked instruments. Baroque music came to its pinnacle with the Italian and German composers of the seventeenth to mid-eighteenth centuries. Celestial Christmas 3 includes eight of those pre-eminent composers. Four Italian composers, Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Maria Manfredini, Giuseppe Torelli and Pietro Locatelli, each provide a glorious Christmas Concerto. These are interspersed with three shorter pieces from German composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Handel and Johann Pachelbel. The spectacular montage comes to a grand conclusion with Antonio Vivaldi's stunning Winter from The Four Seasons. Each of the pieces is tremendously emotional; together, they are powerfully stirring. Even though the composers intended them as Christmas music, most listeners would not want to limit Celestial Christmas 3 to that season alone. Not only is the music itself gloriously gratifying, but the European orchestra and its conductor perform each piece with remarkable virtuosity.

This is the third in this series of Christmas recordings released by Celestial Harmonies, each offering a unique contribution to the joy of the Christmas season.
