Product Description
Chiara Margarita Cozzolani (1602-1677) was one of the most original composers of 17th century Italy, worthy to keep company with her male brethren, Monteverdi, Carissimi and Cavalli. This joyous Christmas release presents some of her finest music in memorable performances by San Francisco's specialist ensemble

Joy.......2002-05-20
This set of CD's offers the listener an experience of joy and beauty. The composition and the performance are both wonderful. This music reminds me of Mozart; it is dense with harmonies and counterpoints.
I don't usually write reviews but I love this music. I heard it first on pubic radio and thought if I could encourage anyone to try it, I would. It's a little treasure in a busy world.
I listen to this every day..........2002-04-18
Jennifer Ellis's voice is sublime. All the voices are delightful. This is my favorite CD and I listen to it every day. It's refreshing and inspiring to me. Especially fabulous are Track 7 on the 1st CD and Track 6 on the 2nd CD. Thank you, Warren Stewart, for making this CD.

A Masterpiece, Magnificently Performed .......2006-02-07
The solemn heavenly beauty of the Russian Orthodox Saturday evening "All-Night Vigil" liturgy resonates off the walls of the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in this magnificent rendering of Rachmaninoff's masterpiece. In particular, the 'Bogoroditse Dyevo' (Ave Maria) is achingly beautiful. A great performance of a truly great piece of music.
Impression.......2000-04-13
It's like the walls of a church begin to sing!
Sacred music at its mind-blowing best.......1999-01-14
This is an utterly magnificent recording - one of my all-time favorites. I have heard other renditions, but none come close to this particular interpretation. It is sung with such passion, soul, and intelligence that I'm sure that if he could hear it, Rachmaninov himself would be moved to tears.

To look at the CD catalog, you might think that all Italian church music after Palestrina came from Venice. Obviously that isn't true--as this recording sets out to demonstrate. These capable French ensembles have gathered together music (mostly omitting the plainchant) that might have been used at a 17th- century Roman Vespers for the Assumption, then one of the most important feasts of the year. The composers, now forgotten, were quite respected in their day; their general style will sound entirely familiar to anyone who knows Cavalli or late Monteverdi. There's very little virtuoso vocal display here--just graceful, reverent writing for duo, trio, and five-voice choir. This disc of previously unknown music may not be revelatory, but it is quite enjoyable. --Matthew Westphal

This is the minimalist's Monteverdi Vespers: only eight singers and 11 instrumentalists, no added plainchant or instrumental music to make up a complete Vespers service--just the music Monteverdi published, performed by the minimum possible number of musicians. In fact, Monteverdi most likely composed these pieces for solo voices (as was standard practice in 17th-century Italy), so it's no surprise that the Scholars' performance sounds thoroughly credible. The voices aren't as luscious as those of the famous singers on higher-priced versions, but they have a pure, youthful sound that suits Monteverdi well. Occasional flatness from the sopranos and cornetts aside, the execution is fine; singers and instrumentalists both add some interesting and stylish embellishments. For those on a tight budget, this version would make a fine introduction to this extraordinary work; at the budget price, Monteverdi collectors can gladly add it to their shelves as well, flaws notwithstanding. --Matthew Westphal
Customer Reviews:
Marvelously Intimate Monteverdi.......2002-08-03
The Scholars Baroque Ensemble is a small group of British singers and period instrumentalists that records for the inexpensive Naxos label. The SBE's singers (about 12 in number!) furnish both chorus and soloists, which is to say that you will not encounter celebrity vocalists here or in any SBE/Naxos production. Still, this performance of Monteverdi's sublime 1610 Vespers joins other noteworthy Scholars/Naxos recordings of Bach (St. John Passion; Motets), Handel ('Messiah'), and Purcell ('Dido & Aeneas'; 'The Faery Queene') near the top of my list of recommendable budget-priced recordings. As with all its recordings, the SBE provides a chamber-scale performance of music that is often performed as polychoral spectacle by much larger groups. I find the intimacy of the SBE's approach refreshing; others might legitimately prefer a larger sound and gravitate to recordings by the likes of John Eliot Gardner or Nikolaus Harnoncourt. And even if you do prefer a smaller scale performance of the Monteverdi Vespers, direct competition for SBE/Naxos comes from baroque veteran Andrew Parrott on a pair of EMI CDs. Parrott's fine performance is also budget priced, employs star singers (Emma Kirkby, for example) and sounds considerably more polished than the SBE's. Call me perverse, but I rather prefer the Naxos recording anyway. While a bit rough around the edges, the sheer enthusiasm of the SBE is winning. Moreover, Naxos provides a suitably rich and resonant recording acoustic so that, although performed chamber-scale, the grandeur of the music isn't at all slighted. In short, the freshness and astonishing beauty of Monteverdi's glorious music registers throughout. Lovely!

Customer Reviews:
Contemporary Russian Orthodoxy.......2005-12-13
This album is for sophisticated listeners who already know their way around Russian music, and specifically around the Russian sacred choral tradition, at least more than just a little. (NOTE: By `sophisticated,' I do not mean to hint that the music on this album is obscure, dissonant, weird, inaccessible, etc. With the exception of Nos. 1 - 4 and 8 - 11, however, these selections are just lesser known - and undeservedly so.) This recording serves as fitting evidence that the Russian Orthodox choral tradition did NOT die when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917. To the contrary, this tradition was maintained and revived by many of the composers represented on this album. The album's producers thoughtfully begin with some better known selections: a traditional chant, Tchaikovsky, Arkhangel'sky, Chesnokov and Ippolitov-Ivanov. But even in the case of Chesnokov - who makes a fitting bridge between the `choked off' tradition of the Soviet era and the present - the selections include a triptych of para-liturgical choral essays. (His `Angel Cried,' selection No. 10 on this album, is worth the purchase price alone. If you've never heard this work before, prepare to be transfigured!) Recording No. 11, the best known liturgical composition of Ippolitov-Ivanov, represents this choir's final genuflection to the `traditional' Russian sacred choral tradition, and then we're off! Agafonnikov, Lebedev and Kikta are all living composers who continue to make contributions to this genre. The late Alfred Schnittke, better known for his symphonic, operatic and other modern classical (secular) achievements, is also represented here - given possibly more than his fair share on this CD because of name recognition. If anyone who should be here is missing, that would be Georgiy Sviridov, who wrote a number of stunning para-liturgical pieces in the Russian Orthodox style; but Sviridov's choral work is well-represented elsewhere in the Russian Orthodox (and related) discography. I could raise other quibbles, but that would be unfair. Finally, the performers are equal to the music - suffice it to say that this is one of the finest professional choirs in today's Russia. If the Russian Orthodox liturgical tradition speaks to you, and if you've already become acquainted with the big names (Bortnyansky, Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov, etc.) then this recording is definitely for you.
