Editorial Reviews
Fanfare Magazine
Wilson wisely keeps the voices moving in smooth, usually stepwise motion. Sandy's stuff seems the most sympathetic for Wilson. Consider the piece Can, which is about an empty can, but with descriptive words undermining the ostensibly prosaic subject: "it rang its tongueless gong of tin." Wilson's dissonant harmonies reflect the more edgy language of Sandy's poem. This is predominantly moderately paced music, or slow music like Can or the far-ranging and explorative August 22, a musing at the edge of the sea with thoughtfully colored instrumentation for piano and percussion. Wilson's stark, taut language in Sandy's Home from the Range, a poem seemingly about a soldier dealing with postwar trauma, is to the point. Appling's choristers sing generally with a vibratoless, cool tone. They achieve a nicely refined surface appropriate for the Wilson's equally refined, very idiomatic, and straightforward choral writing.

Recommended for fans of the choral genre.

It took me awhile to get into Wilson's music, but it proved to be worth it. I can't believe how musicians can play such difficult music, but this group seems to do it l very easily. I'm glad I took the time

I bought this after hearing a performance of "August 22" at Mannes last spring. I have never been drawn to choral music outside of requiems and opera, but I then i started getting into Arvo Part and now Wilson, which I find here to be exciting, funny, melancholy, and at times very frightening. I had never heard of this Wilson guy before, but people tell me his is big in NYC. I think this CD is great, particulary, "In Schrafft's" is a knockout. Warmly Recommended
