Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Introduction to a Golden Age.......2007-02-16

The geographically confusing world of Schleswig, half Germanic and half Danish, proved a most fertile soil for musical development in the 17th century. This CD of organ selections largely from that universe (save for two selections at the close by 19th century composers)will obviously never appear on Amazon's best-sellers page, but I daresay little if anything appearing there is as well-performed or as intrinsically musical as this fine selection of mostly forgotten (save by organists and musicologists) masters of the Baroque.
As befits a properly produced CD issue of lesser-known works and composers a fine historical overview is to be found in the accompaning booklet. Two of the composers, Johannes Lorentz and Franz Tunder were born while Shakespeare was living - their music is from the very dawn of the Baroque. The much more familiar - relatively - Buxtehude selections are brilliantly recorded, as are all the pieces: MGD - to judge by these examples - is a company that demands the very highest standards. The recording won a Prize from the prestigious Deutschen Schallplatten Kritiks
There are excellent and fulsome notes in German on the organs used - the CD having been produced with two goals in mind: First, to present a cross section of historical organs of the region, and then, Second, to give a fair sampling of the music composed for these organs - which date from as early as 1573 to as recent as 1828.
By the way, the major biography of Buxtehude by Snyder, long out of print, is being reissued late this Spring. Don't miss it! And don't let it go out of print again before you grab a copy - the currently out of print copies of the first edition are going for a king's ransom.
