Pleasant-listening CD. I expected a little more variety, but overall it's relaxing to listen to.

Another great set of Hearts of Space artists....

Once again I now own the individual discs of all the artists but 4 of them...and if I could find a Zeus Faber disc, I'd get it...

Alot of the tracks on this collection have a water theme to them...Braheny and Clark have tracks from their "Rain" disc, Danna and Clement contribute from their "North of Niagra" disc...both of these have a waterfall, rivers and rain feel to them...then add in the ocean induced work of Raphael to finish the water feel...

There's also an Irish section, albeit small with a track from John Doan and one from Joanie Madden...The largest feel of this disc is solemness...Bill Douglas contributes a pair of songs backed by the amazing Ars Nova Singers...and Constance Demby presents a soaring soundscape...and to end the disc...a quiet sad track from Paul Sauvanet...

Lovable.......1999-11-30

Wonderfull set of CD's. Two pianistic performers are already mentioned; to these must be added the pianist Brautigam and the violinistin van Keulen. Beautifull performances of Mendelssohn's romantic and exciting concertos. Listening to these CD's is simply a great pleasure, if such an unprofessional qualification is allowed.

Shostakovich's Viola Sonata, Op. 147, is a good example of the composer's own eclecticism, quoting Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" in the Adagio, and elsewhere his own early Suite for Two Pianos. Written in 1975, the Viola Sonata was Shostakovich's last completed composition. He did not live to hear its first performance, which took place less than two months after his death.

I initially thought these were new recordings, but they must be reissues, because they date from March 1992. The Dutch musicians, violinist Isabelle Van Keulen and pianist Ronald Brautigam, present taut, nervous and brilliant readings of these great sonatas by Shostakovich. They shave many minutes off of the fantastic live 1985 recordings by Oleg Kagan, Yuri Bashmet and Sviatoslav Richter (on Moscow Studio Archives -- see my review), and the result is that angst predominates over deep pathos and tragedy. It is a different interpretation, more Scandinavian perhaps, but it works! The "Violin Sonata," written for David Oistrakh in 1968, best fits this style, with its 12-tone first movement. The 1975 "Viola Sonata," Shostakovich's last work, is widely considered to be one of his best. It is deeply elegiac, and while this version is excellent, its depths are more fully revealed by Bashmet, the great Russian violist.

Phillips Gets It Right, Best Version Available.......2001-05-01

Perhaps I'm a little over opinionated, but I have not always agreed with Phillips' choice of artists for Mozart. Mitsuko Uchida should be lucky to ever play one phrase on the piano as well as Alfred Brendel, yet, they both appear on the Phillips label. However, this collection is an entirely different story. I am not really a fan of the early mozart on the disc, but as the performances go, fine. The jewels are contained in the last four discs. Arthur Grumiaux and Walter Klien are intoxicating. These two have great artistic sensibility, and their chemistry is ideal. Since I can't have Mr. Klien over to my house, I often grab my violin and play along to this collection, much to my neighbors' consternation. This is pretty high praise, you say? Especially when a Itzhak Perlman edition exists? Good point. The Perlman could have been the best, but guess who the accompaniest is? (Gag) Daniel Barenboim. Deutches Grammaphon got half the equation right. My guess is that Perlman has a friendship with Barenboim, and so he is kind of stuck with him. And so, I can't give this collection 5 stars since the possibility still exists that Perlman will rerecord with a qualified artist. Also, the digital recordings are pretty early, and so you will find a little of the expected harshness. But don't let this deter you. Trust me, the cover may be one of the silliest you've ever seen (Did they get that violin from a vending machine? Nice tuners.), but inside awaits pure joy.

Pure Mozart goodness.......2000-04-18

I recently got this 7-disc set from the library and to say I'm pleased with it would be a gross understatement. The performances are wonderful, and the sound quality just right. The first disc is just pieces that didn't fit under the standard violin sonata criteria. They are from all periods of Mozart's life and are nice enough, although most remained incomplete until after his death. The next two discs are very early Mozart, as in when he was 6 years old to about 10 years. As simplistic as they are, it's still amazing that the young Mozart can produce music of this caliber. It's pretty much baroque/Italian style music with the harpsichord and violin but it's good enough. Things really get cooking when you get to the last four discs though. These are mature Mozart pieces and it shows, as each track practically glitters with brilliance. The set ends with the marvelous K. 526 sonata. Even at the rather high price, this is still an excellent set, and a very good addition to the Complete Mozart Edition
