I really held off buying this CD. I love Al Kooper, but I already had most of the stuff on the Well Done CD, and this is pretty pricey. But, I really wanted the unreleased stuff, so what are you going to do? I bit, and I'm glad I did. The unreleased stuff is so much fun. If you're like me, when you really embrace an artist, digging up rarities is like an anthropologist digging up artifacts...wonderful hidden gems in the rough.

Actually, some of these gems are actually very polished, they just didn't see release for one reason or another. There are many stand-outs, and I particularly love Making Plans for Nigel. In Al's unique way, he really uncovers the hidden potential and beauty of the song...made me rush to my long unplayed XTC albums. I really loved XTC, but Al does this song better. Also, I never really thought anyone could improve on BS&T's version of I Can't Quit Her, much less the original artist himself. But I'll be darned if I don't need a crowbar to get this one out of my brain, synthetic drums and all! I guess that's my only criticism (however slight). Many of these songs were done by Al alone in his basement, which is really cool, except that Al does not play an actual drum kit, so we get electronic drums, and I'm a purist, particularly when it comes to percussion. But the material and arrangements are so great that I can overlook it (though I still have to wince every once in a while.

But hey, you got to absolutely love Rachmoninov's Birthday and what he does with (to?) Hey Jude.

The Well Done portion speaks for itself. If you are new to Al Kooper and want just the "best of", you'd honestly be better of with Al's Big Deal. It's got most of what's here in really good sound (for 1989). But if you are feeling adventurous, I say go for it. Listen to the Well Done CD a couple of times, fall in love with (you know you will), and then go ahead and put the Rare CD in and discover Al Kooper's true Naked Songs.

33 songs on two discs, the first rare stuff and the second of course are his well known songs. Kooper does it all...blues - gospel - rock - jazz. The cover you heard of Season Of The Witch was something he did with Stephen Stills. There is a bizarre version of XTC's Making Plans For Nigel and a jazzy version of Hey Jude. A true rock & roll legend!

This is a totally dazzling collection of music from a man who is probably the most under-rated and least recognized musical geniuses working in popular music today. Not only that, he also works in blues and is a great player as well. He's up there with Brian Wislon and Lennon & McCartney, only no one knows it.

I nominate Al Kooper to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

I give 5 stars to "Well Done" but 1 to "Rare". Don't get me wrong, I love Al Kooper. I just read his book "Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards" and could not put it down. This guy has done just about everything there is to do in the music business, and he has done it well. Plus he's one funny geezer.

He played on a number of classic Dylan albums including "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde". He even practically produced "New Morning" but wasn't given credit for it. He formed "Blood Sweat and Tears" but quit/was fired before they got cheesey. I love how he talks about that group... (paraphrasing) "if they can live with 'Lucretia MacEvil', God bless 'em".

He discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd and produced their first 3 albums. He claims that Ed King's guitar solo on "Sweet Home Alabama" is in the wrong key, but I disagree. I think 'G' is the right key! D/C/G = 5/4/1. Isn't that right, Professor Al?

Anyway, Kooper has been on numerous songs you know - including the Stones "Can't Always Get What You Want" and he's produced some of the greats: The Tubes, Nils Lofgren, B.B. King, Ricky Nelson, and many more I can't remember.

"Well Done" rocks convincingly. It makes a bid for Al Kooper as genius. The players he worked with in the '60s and '70's were all first rate: Mike Bloomfield, Shuggie Otis, Stephen Stills...

What bothers me most about "Rare" is the new stuff. I wanted to like it so bad - especially after reading his book and how he has been persecuted lately by record companies and fans alike, but I just couldn't help feeling like he's lost his magic touch. Some of the older rarities are fun - I really liked the big band jazz feel of "Hey Jude" - you will hardly recognize the tune, but it swings!

Anyway, one thumb up for "Well Done" and one down for "Rare", but overall it is worth the price of admission just to get a feel for Mr. Kooper's whole career. Go ahead, just be aware of what you're getting.

In response to the previous reviewer's question, this CD contains the full 11 minute version of "Season Of The Witch". This compilation lives up to its name. It has a generous amount of Al's rare and well known music. The info booklet is informative and entertaining as well. Hopefully, this CD will help more people realize Al's great contribution to rock music.

This disk, just as volume 1 of "Good & Rare", offers a fine collection, in excellent sound, of Crosby rarities of the 1950's. It is lovingly packaged. I heartily recommend both disks.

    If you had to ask me who I thought was the most underrated individual in the history of popular music I would say without even a moment's pause to think "Lou Christie".
    He was more than a pop idol, he was a true pop visionary. What other white American popster would make a bizarre wonderfully twisted ska single in 1963 (Two Faces Have I)... Then people, including myself, rave about the giant steps being made by Brian Wilson and The Beatles in the 60s, but no one else 1965 made a record as modern or as individual as Lou's Lightnin'Strikes single. If you needed any more proof of how weird and wonderful Lou's brand of pop could be this is it. Egyptian Shumba is a collection of his early 60s work with girlgroup The Tammys. It's 100% gold but track 16,the title track is perhaps the greatest single pop recording I've ever heard by anyone. As revolutionary as Good Vibrations, it sounds like a mix of the melancholic beauty present in the best girl group recordings by The Cookies and Chiffons along side The Monks as manic studio session band with Joe Meek engineering (and possibly a pinch of Sun Ra)... then for complete contrast there is the naive, sensual and gentle angelic teen love ballad Gypsy, it'll touch your heart. Sounds good? Well believe me it's even better than that.

    How lucky can you get? This album has a collection of tunes that most Supersuckers fans have scoured the globe (and the internet) to obtain! B-sides, rarities, and covers that will have you singin along at the top of your lungs in no time! Would you say that your songs are mainly about liquor, women, drugs, and killing? YES!!!

    Wow, this makes it convenient to be a rabid 'suckers collector. I have most of these on those "rare, fan-club only, 7' colored vinyl" versions, but as DK would say, "Give me Convenience, or Give me Death." I love the glow-in-the-dark vinyl I picked up of this release, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone who hasn't heard Jerry Reed, the Commodores, and, yes, Outkast covered by the mighty Supersuckers. A great trip exploring the vast inspirations that motivate Eddie Spaghetti and Co. Please buy this and encourage the Supersuckers to dig further in their vaults and produce a "Devil's Food 2."

    Usually im a bit sceptical of comps which are a collection of 'b-sides & rareties' because it often becomes apparent exactly why these tracks were left off albums....

    Fortunately theres none of that here. Theres a lot of gems on this album and no real filler. It starts off with the fantastic & blistering Gato Negro but from there the quality doesnt drop off.. Highlights include The Suckers covers of Outkasts 'Hey Ya', Electric Frankensteins "Teenage Shutdown", and plenty of seldom heard rip-roaring originals like "Can Pipe" and "Team Man"..The country fans arent ignored either with the album featuring country versions of the suckers classics "Born With a Tail" and "Doublewide" and a cover of "Eastbound and Down" which is so good it will have you singing along even if your not a country fan.

    All in all its a damn fine album and makes you wonder what other gems are lurking in the Supersucker Vault..

    This collection mixes some classic songs, some older songs redone, and some never before heard songs. Whether you are a new listener, or a die-hard fan, this CD is thoroughly enjoyable.

    Although this is not the best work of the Supersuckers, it is a great resource for those interested from hearing the Supersuckers live, or being recommended by a friend.

    Judy Garland fans will delight in this new CD of still more of her incomparable work. Judy performed countless songs flawlessly on her TV series. Although the TV series lasted only one season the fresh output of songs and music to this today underscores the singular talents of the great Judy Garland as well as the extraordinary television show she hosted.

    The quality of the sound is good and there's quite a bit of variety in the songs presented here on this CD. The happy songs are of course here; you get great recordings of Judy singing "Lorna," "This Could Be The Start Of Something," and "Steppin' Out With My Baby." I especially love the passion with which Judy sings "Lorna," a tribute song to her daughter Lorna Luft. Lorna was thrilled with this surprise song on Judy's show that night; and it is every bit as magical today, too. In addition to the happy songs, there are also very soulful songs including the medley of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot / The Whole World In His Hands." Personally, I am very fond of the way Judy sings so beautifully "Make Someone Happy."

    The musical arrangements are very well done; and a real plus for Judy fans (and fans of the great vocalists in general) is that several of the songs here are on CD for the first time. The "World War I Medley" leads very nicely into the following " America the Beautiful," too. Awesome!

    All in all, the fact that new Judy Garland CDs are STILL being produced decades after her passing is striking proof of her incomparable talent. There will never be another Judy Garland; and this CD is a great start in proving why. I also recommend this CD for fans of all the great vocalists. Enjoy! SMILES

    The opportunity to possess--in one convenient package--every recording Ornette Coleman made for Atlantic is an opportunity most fans of modern jazz would be hard pressed to turn down. (It must be noted, however, that many jazz fans would have a very easy time turning down anything Ornette recorded, thank you very much). But for Coleman fans, this collection is an embarrassment of riches. Arranged chronologically by recording date, the set collects music from 1959 to 1961, the period many consider Ornette's most vital. Included are sessions from Free Jazz, Ornette!, The Shape of Jazz to Come, Twins, The Art of the Improvisers, Change of the Century, To Whom Who Keeps a Record, and This Is Our Music. As a bonus, producers have also included a handful of previously unreleased tracks. Packaged with gorgeous photos, terrific liner notes from Robert Palmer, as well as copious discographic information, Beauty is a terrific package. As for the music, the recordings are clean, with excellent stereo separation (usually featuring Ornette in one channel and pocket trumpeter Don Cherry in another). But what really sets this collection apart is how clearly the spirit of the music is visible. Beauty bristles with that coiled, edge-of-the-chair excitement that Ornette could so easily summon, capture, and manipulate. And while Coleman's horn playing here is genuinely pulse-quickening and vital, what also emerges from this set is the strength of his band. While Ornette was tensed and ready to pounce, the more esoteric Cherry was able to float and drift with the currents of music's emotion. Behind them, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Ed Blackwell could roar like an open-throttle race car or purr like an idling sedan. But no matter what speed, this is music that gives the listener the impression it is going somewhere. And, of course, for Ornette Coleman, the destination isn't the point, it's the journey. S. Duda

    The most astonishing thing about hearing Ornette Coleman's Atlantic recordings today is how accessible they seem. Back in the early '60s, when they were first released with immodest titles like "Change of the Century" and "The Shape of Jazz to Come," all we could hear was the way the alto saxophonist and his quartet felt free to disregard the usual bounds of keys and measures in their solos. Because Coleman's music was, in fact, the shape of jazz to come, his innovations don't seem so novel now.     One of the amazing aspects of this music is that it doesn't date. It still seems as fresh and as innovative as it was when it was released. Ornette was so prolific during these sessions (1959-1961) that Atlantic released the material over a 15 year period. The last album of this material was released in 1975. Of course, this set has the famous (or infamous, according to some people) Free Jazz track. As much as I like this song, there's tons of greater music in this set. Ornette's music reminds me of the intricate arrangements of Zappa and progressive rock (which both of them had a huge jazz influence). Ornette shines here, playing, as he puts it, pure emotion. Cherry, Blackwell, and Haden play extremely well too. For those who don't know, a pocket trumpet is, literally, a trumpet that can fit in a pocket. I really dig this stuff. Wish Ornette had recorded more....

    Ornette Coleman's arrival in New York in 1959 signalled a change in the jazz world, a change whose rippling effects are still felt to this day. His legendary residency at the Five Spot club and his recordings with Atlantic Records polarized the jazz community at large-- some heralded him as the next logical step from the innovations of Parker and Gillespie, some heralded him as an upstart with no real theory behind him and no mastery of his instrument. One thing is certain, Coleman's music has had long-lasting effects, and his influence can be heard throughout jazz with musicians as diverse as Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, John Zorn and Branford Marsalis all citing Coleman as an influence. During these first years in New York, Coleman was signed to Atlantic Records, where he released six groundbreaking albums and had enough leftover material for three further albums and half a dozen further tracks. Such prolificness he'd never repeat in his career-- indeed the two and a half years he spent on Atlantic accounts for about a third of his released studio recordings. All of this material is collected here as "Beauty is a Rare Thing".

    The music of Ornette coleman is actually much easier to digest than most people would give it credit-- loosely stated, the critical part of his music is that the soloist determines the direction of the piece, not chord changes or some other limitation. The rest-- the odd harmonies, the intentional off key playing, etc., are all less essential. If this idea of spontaneous structure is something you can accept, you'll likely be able to enjoy Coleman's music.

    The records on here include several of his classics-- the six studio albums released during his tenure on Atlantic-- "The Shape of Jazz to Come", "Change of the Century" (both featuring the quartet of Ornette Coleman on alto, Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Billy Higgins of drums), "This is Our Music" (with Coleman, Cherry, Haden, and drummer Ed Blackwell), "Free Jazz" (featuring a double quartet of Coleman, bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy, Cherry, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, Haden, bassist Scott LaFaro, Higgins and Blackwell), "Ornette!" (Coleman, Cherry, LaFaro, Blackwell) and "Ornette on Tenor" (Coleman on tenor, Cherry, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Blackwell). Additionally, the three extras albums-- "To Whom Keeps a Record", "Twins" and "The Art of the Improvisers" are here in their entirity (although all material is presented in chronological order). Many classic and groundbreaking performances are contained here-- standards "Lonely Woman", "Peace", "Focus on Sanity", several takes on "Revolving Doors" under different titles, lovely ballad "Just For You", and of course, the stunning "Free Jazz" session.

    Of course, included in the set is the obligatory liner note essays, including pieces by Coleman and Cherry, and some quotes from musicians about Coleman, positive and negative.

    Is this for everyone? Probably not. If you're curious, pick up "The Shape of Jazz to Come", it'll give you an idea. If you're exploring Coleman, this material is all essential and probably worth the investment.

    These recordings are the centerpiece of the genius of the great Ornette Coleman and are essential to any serious modern jazz collection. Ornette Coleman is definately the strongest voice of the alto saxophone since Charlie Parker's heydey. Don Cherry is an excellent cornetist and pocket trumpeter and makes a great sideman. You can just tell when Ornette's blowing the horn because of the rough squawk. It's amazing to hear the recordings like this which started as early as the late 50's! Ornette Coleman was a genius well before his time and even influenced the great John Coltrane(1926-1967). Now that's saying something. The unaquanted listener will definatley mistake this for the more famous Coltrane. As I mentioned in the title, this great man also influenced the late, Great Jerry Garcia(1942-1995) and at one time in the late 1980's, Garcia played on one of Coleman's albums! These recordings for Atlantic Records which spanned from 1959-1961 are very ahead of their time and just spell M-O-D-E-R-N J-A-Z-Z! I mean come on...No Piano???...That's weird!

    Alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman broke new boundaries for Jazz music when he burst onto the music scene in 1958. His radical approach stripped the music of any fixed melody or harmony in favor of pure spontaneous improvisation. This was the birth of Free Jazz and was quite innovative and nearly unheard of for its time.
    Ornette's recordings for Atlantic Records are not only milestones for the label but for Jazz music in general. His quartet did not include a pianist which immediately throws out chordal structures altogether. The groundbreaking "Free Jazz" recording of 1961 finds Ornette in a 'double-quartet' setting consisting of two reeds, two trumpets, two bassists and two drummers all going head-to-head in a monumental epic improvisation. This recording as well as his smaller quartet recordings are included in the 6-CD boxed set "Beauty Is A Rare Thing" - a thorough detailed musical history of Ornette's complete recordings for Atlantic Records (1959-1962).
    Each track in this set is presented in the order that it was recorded beginning in mid-1959 with the sessions that produced the pioneering classic "The Shape Of Jazz To Come" and ending in late-1961 with his lone tenor sax album "Ornette On Tenor" as well as two 'avant-garde' classical style pieces composed by Gunther Schuller which Ornette contributed to. While it may seem odd for devotees to hear this music in a different order than what's on the original albums, it doesn't get in the way of making this an absolute enjoyable listening experience. While some tracks are without a doubt better than others, nearly every piece of music in this boxed set is a gem.
    The extensive booklet included in this set includes an extended essay by music critic Robert Palmer as well as commentary from those who know Ornette. Even Ornette himself contributes to the liner notes. There are also small details on the recording sessions as well as a discography and some rare photos of Ornette and his quartet.
    With all this said, this is an extraordinary set from one of Jazz's controversial but acclaimed pioneers. This is definitely a must for the die-hard Coleman fan. If you've got the bucks to shell out for this set, this also serves as the perfect introduction to his music as well.

    You have to be dedicated Ornette fan to commit to a box set of this size and price. The problem is, most dedicated fans probably already own many, if not all, of these recordings. After all, we are talking about the essential material he cut for Atlantic from '59-'61. Still, the prospect of having all of these recordings together in one deluxe package is tempting, indeed. The real dangling carrot here is the previously unreleased material which may or may not appear as bonus tracks on the single CD's (I have the LP's, so I can't say for sure). So, if you are sure you are into free jazz and Mr. Coleman, in particular, and you don't already have alot of his Atlantic material, then this just might be the collection for you.

      I dont know where to start, this album is just amasing.
      Buckwilds always been one of my favourite producers, and this just proofs that im right, he produced alot of classics on this album.. wether its unreleased tracks, or remixes.. i meen this man did a real good job on the album.

      The album got rappers featured such as, KRS-ONE, Nas, Chubb Rock, Organized Konfusion, Sadat X, Rakim along DITC members including the late great Big L (RIP).

      like the guy below me, my rate would be:

      Lyrics: 9/10
      Coverart: 10/10

      this is another DITC classic right here, so i suggest any fan, wether its hiphop in general, or a DITC fan.. you will enjoy this album no matter what.. i really dident expect to much when i heard this was coming out.. but i was very highly suprised when i got it, and listened trough the whole thing without skipping one single track!

      These tracks was never released, but after 10 years about, they have been conscious for us. 10 years are the duration of a psyco-analysis !!!

      Christmas usually comes around December 25th of every year, but mine came a little bit earlier in the form of this MASTERPIECE, Double Disc's BUCKWILD'S RARE STUDIO MASTERS 93-97 CIRCA. If this album is an art, it would be aesthetic, because my favourite producer DJ Buckwild has just put together rare remixes and unreleased gems that encapsulate a time in NY HIP HOP called the golden age where dope rhymes and immaculate beats reigned supreme. Buckwild is a quintenssential NY beatsmith who together with my man DJ PETE ROCK are the greatest producer of all time, yes, of all time without any equivocations.

      Now let's get to the business of dissecting this meticulously put together gem. First, disc one (Synopsis) has nineteen tracks beginning with Channel live's Mad Izm remix, Nas/AZ life is a B***h (Remix #1) this beat got my head nodding I almost broke my neck, Brand Nubian's Word is Bond Jazz Remix, Big L's MVP remix #1, and my favorite Jemini the Gifted One Scars and Pain --- One of the best beats I have ever heard, a '94 era East New York sound, hard drums and snares, and Kool Keith (YO Black Remix) Stupid track, I can't believe this cat got skillz '95 era.

      Disc two, begins where one left off --- Organized Konfusion's Bring it on (Remix) GOOD GOD What a track! rugged, dark tone, and jazzy. The aforementioned always got me nodding my head seriously, head almost decapitated no kidding peace to Organized. Bushwackas Caught up in the game nice track I love it, Guru/Bahamadia --- Respect the Architect Jazz Remix, Diamond D, Sadat X, and my man Lord Finesse --- U can't front 93 circa, this track sort of introduced Buckwild to the hip hop HEADZ. Channel Live's Mad Izm (95 Remix New Lyrics and Beats) better than the original remix, and Black Sheep's North South East West (Remix. Alright guys, these are just snippets of what this album offers go COP it Please Please Please. I can't leave my house without it, as a matter of fact I have one in my car and the other one in my room --- Two CD's I copped.

      Finally, one love to Buckwild for his contribution to underground hip hop
      and this impeccable album is a testament to the above assertion, moreover, his body of works is ineffaceable I mean ineffaceable. One!
