Customer Reviews:
A Mussorgsky feast beyond praise.......2006-06-11
It was incredibly generous of DG to throw toegther these great performances--one of them legenday--in a bargain two-fer. The legendary performance, of course, is Richter's 1958 Pictures at an Exhibition performed in concert. The rights are owned by Philips, but I don't know if their latest remastering has been used here. The complaints about dreadful sonics are justified: the piano is far away and tinny, the Sofia audience coughs continuously--some of them are lucky to have left with their lungs intact--and there is a noisy exhaust fan in the foreground. It's a testimony to Richter's incandescent reading that it survives beyond all obstacles.
Another high point is the orchestral reading of Pictures under Giulini with the CSO. This was a famous recording in its day, because Giulini took the thrice-familiar music seriously, a bit slower than usual, adding many individual touches. Maybe his approach becomes ponderous and too serious at times, but it's one of a kind, and the solo winds in the orchestra are a delight.
Actually, I was most moved by Vishnievskaya's selection of songs, recorded in the Soviet Union with Igor Markevitch adding his superlative accompaniments--this is Mussorgsky singing of the highest order. But so is Fassbaender's Songs and Dances of Death, despite her lack of Slavic authenticity. Maazel bombs through Night on Bald Mountain with suitable thrills.
In all, this Panorama two-fer can't be faulted. It's one of the very best in the seeries, and several of the choicest things on it are otherwise out of print.
A STRONG REBUTTLE to the "bad" reviews........2006-05-19
155 minutes of music and one reviewer gives these CDs 1 star for couging here and there during 7 minutes of Richter's Pictures recital. Not continually mind you. I DON'T GET IT!
A reviewer doesn't like vocal music..so 2 stars. I DON'T GET IT! Just because one does not like "classical" vocals, doesn't mean they stink.
This is over 2 1/2 hours at single CD budget price. Geez...
Giulini gives a superbly recorded THRILLING performance of Pictures that, in my humble opinion, is second only to Reiner's. Also with the CSO 15 years earlier.
This 34+ minutes alone is worth the price of this collection.
The excerpts from Boris Gudonov are considered one of the best performances in the catalog (Karajan/VPO). 29 minutes and a good way to determine if you want to purchase the complete opera 3 CD set for over $30+ bucks.
Markevich/Vishnevskaya is considered to be the definitive version for the "6 songs".
The Kovanshchina prelude (Dawn on The Moskva River) is one the most heart rending themes in the canon. Simply gorgeous 6 minute piece of music.
I could go on and on.
Sure there are a few "gaffs" on these CDs. Maazel brings in Bald Mountain in under 10 minutes. Whew!
But hey...kudos to the orchestra for being able to play that well, that fast without stumbling over each other. Quite exhilerating acually.
And Then there is Richter's famous/"infamous" Pictures. Yes the annoying cough and a not so sonic recording. But anyone looking for just this track should already have been aware of this problem. "Classisists" have been talking about this problem for 50+ years. Obviously it can't be fixed. But still several coughs in 30+ minutes just makes it sound as live a performance as it is.
So let's recap...155 minutes of music with maybe parts of 15 minutes of minor problems for DISCOUNT bucks. Pretty good math I'd say. Equals 5 STARS where I come from.
Overall, this is an excellent CD for those who want Mussorgsky's major orchestral output in one package at a bargain price.
Top conductors, top orchestras, great performances and, except for Richter's Pictures, GREAT SONICS.
If you want a truly magnificent solo piano Pictures try Pletnev's on Virgin Classics. It will blow you away. And you get the bonus of his own piano transcription of Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty which is even better.
ENJOY!
Review for Richter's "Pictures" Only.......2006-04-24
I was thrilled to find that Deutsche Grammophon has reissued Sviatoslav Richter's famous Sophia performance of "Pictures." I have owned it on tape, but have until now not had it on CD. I was surprised by previous reviews of this edition, since I thought that the explosive coughing had been toned down substantially. My tape broke years ago, so maybe my memory is off. But the re-engineering of this performace has been one of the most needed "retrofits" in the entire classical catalogue. The sound quality of this edition is certainly much better than the old Polydor record.
I also will refrain from entering the "Is it the greatest Pictures ever?"-debate. It is my favorite. One sometimes hears critics dismiss the piano--thus Mussorgsky's--version as monochromatic. But Richter presents a much more percussive version than most others, which may be why some people don't care for it. (My dad played this piece with a more Romantic reading.) It's a matter of taste: I have never cared for the Ravel version, probably because the percussive aspect doesn't translate into orchestration.
I almost never write music reviews, since I'd hate to convince people to plunk down good money on a CD that conforms to my taste but not theirs. BUT, if you have enjoyed this performace in the past . . .
I give five stars to Richter recital, which amazes me still. I agree that his deliberate "clunkers" are distracting. But having listened to this performance for almost twenty years, it is the "correct" playing of Pictures that now jars me. If you love this performance, as I clearly do, you'll be happy to have this CD. Just don't Google the Hartmann pictures which inspired Mussorgsky. It's disillusioning, but they aren't very good!
A bad whooping cough in 1958 in Sofia, Bulgaria.......2006-04-17
I was listening to the magnificient percussion and
overall sound of this double release, from 2000, #469 169-2,
when throughout the 1st CD, which opens up with the Mussorgsky
number PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION, there's an irritating
musician in the room, exhibiting signs of a bad whooping cough,
thereby totally destroying the 20 minutes or so recording!
There are many soft passages throughout the number, and
it is just incredible that DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON allowed the
bad caugh distractions and irritations (cough! cough! cough!)
to stay on the tape!
Unbelievable! It's so bad, I thought about unloading this
art work, at a second hand music store for a buck and a half,
although I surely paid more than $20 for this double CD release
a few years ago.
I don't care much for the vocal pieces, either.
Aside from that, the remainder of the release is very strong,
so ...I can't bring myself to unload it....yet, anyway.
Giant performance!.......2005-06-03
Carlo Maria Giulini has been to my mind one of the most aristocratic, intelligent, wisdom and remarkable conductors in the last Century. Born in 1914, Giulini owns that special touch of genius that has been proved in several ocassions.
There are several works in the Symphonic repertoire whose meaning depends in last instance of your personal world's approach. The list wold be extremely long but briefly I would name five classic works: The Eroica, The First of Mahler, The Ninth of Bruckner, The fourth of Nielsen and this work.
What do you demand from this work? Fireworks, nostalgic approach, musical musculature, effectism or tonal poolish?
Besides a great amount of recorded versions, there is however, a relatively small number of succesful performances from the early forties with Arturo Toscanini, Guido Cantelli and Igor Markevitch in the fifties, Dorati in the sixties and then Markevitch again and Giulini in the seventies.
Giulini gives this work a remarkable stature, enriching the score with sumptuous details and rubatos, smart accents, inflexions, color sense and above all a noblesse spirit that personally I haven't listened in any other previous version.
Go for this golden treasure recording. But do not expect great fireworks exercises. Giulini never searched the gallery' s applause. He was a honest and original master by himself: his personal landmark.

Customer Reviews:
If only...........2002-08-26
If only Sir Georg had performed the Shostakovich orchestration of the "Kovanshchina" prelude instead of the Rhimsky-Korsakov version, for a more complete Shostakovich album. I would have given this 6 stars instead of 5.
I do enjoy albums that offer a program, as opposed to a symphony followed by this or that odd piece. This is an example of such an album. Abaddo's Berlin Phil. recording of Brahms 4th Symphony is another. The album opens with the Haydn Variations, followed by "Naenie" a choral work not often performed, then concludes with the symphony.
The tragedy and triumph of Shostakovich.......2001-07-18
This is an album mostly about death: It was one of Solti's last and shows him very grim-faced on the cover. Given Shostakovich's perennial obsession with death, I'm sure he would have considered that very fitting. Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death is beautifully performed, and the liner notes give not only the original (transliterated) Russian text of the songs, but also their corresponding English translations.
According to Shostakovich's memoirs (Testimony), the Fifteenth deals with many of the same motifs which appear in the late stories of Chekhov, one of Shostakovich's most beloved authors: that life is sadly bittersweet and filled with the strange and unexpected. It is an enigmatic work, and tragic in the same way as Chekhov's story "Rothschild's Violin" is tragic, in a strange, ironic sense. There is no trace of self-pity, just a bittersweet Russian irony that makes you wonder about the stangeness of life. The clock ticking at the beginning and end of the work serve to remind the listener that life is short and so best to keep the hand-wringing to a minimum: you will be dead before long anyway.
I like the spin Solti put on this symphony. I especially like the emphatic stress put on that dissonant chord that occurs toward the end of the fourth movement, where Shostakovich seems to be saying "Stop!!". The final percussion ending is also beautifully performed.
Great Symphony/Great Performance.......2000-02-29
Solti was an extrovert conductor, and this performance of the 15th Symphony may miss some of the subtleties and ambiguities that pervade this music (my personal favorite in that regard is the Sanderling/Cleveland performance on Erato). That said, this is gripping music making. Solti knows about drama, and the 15th is intensely dramatic. The percussion-haunted ending, recalling Shostakovich's "Leningrad" Symphony is one of the most chilling things you will ever hear. I might add that I attended one of the CSO concerts from which this recording was taken, and it was *electrifying*. It's not exactly Solti's natural idiom, but his bold, unsentimental view of these death-haunted works (note the "Songs and Dances of Death" too!) is not only successful, it's also a testimonial to his own steadfastness in the face of death (he died at the age of 85 only 5-6 months after these concerts). If you only want one 15th, this might not be the one to get: but if you have a couple, I think you'll find this a powerful and moving view of one of the great symphonies of the 20th century. Hail and farewell, Sir Georg!

Customer Reviews:
I grew up with this recording.......2006-05-10
My family had a cassette of Evgeny Svetlanov's wonderful rendering of Mussorgsky's organic "Pictures at an Exhibition" when I was very young, and we would listen to this countless times. We believed that this would be the only recording of that piece that we would listen to. Now that this piece is on CD (courtesy of Moscow Studio Archives) I'm very glad that I can hear a better sound for this. This is an ultimate (and under-appreciated) performance that holds true to the composer's intended atmospheres. To me, no other conductor comes close to Svetlanov (especially Carlo Maria Guilini; he takes it way too slow) and no other orchestra can bring out such passion and power. The only other orchestra that comes close is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (with Yuri Temirkanov).
Along with "Songs & Dances of Death," "The Capture of Kars," and a selection from "Khovanshchina," this should be a great buy for all Mussorgsky fans. A+

All Under One Roof: The Ultimate Abbado Sampler.......2006-01-30
This 25-CD set is intended to commemorate the then-25-year-long working relationship between Deutsche Grammophon and Claudio Abbado. The preface to each of the CD booklets is the same for all 25 CDs: a letter from Dr. Andreas Holschneider, president of DG, to Claudio. It's a Dear Claudio letter that explains the impetus behind, and structure of, this celebratory issue, and what it's intended to document: a history going back to 1967. Holschneider's biggest problem was a simple one: out of over 150 recordings Abbado had completed, less than one-sixth could appear in this box set.
Of course, monster box sets are now in vogue: 171 CDs for the Complete Mozart Edition on Brilliant Classics; also 171 CDs for the Hanssler Complete Bach Edition. DG therefore COULD have offered the whole thing had they been so inclined, but the market for a 25-CD set wasn't that large to begin with. Remember that there is a LOT of music on 25 CDs. It may be dwarfed by the Bach and Mozart monster boxes (not to mention the Complete Beethoven Edition by DG itself, which runs to 87 CDs), but it is commensurate in size to the complete works of several major composers: William Walton in a 23-CD boxset, Prokofiev in a 24-CD boxset, and Bartok in a 29-CD boxset.
So, aside from made-over packaging and CD booklets with an integrated "look," what does this quasi-vanity project give us that we don't get from the original releases? Re-mastering isn't explicitly credited anywhere in this set, and a comparison of several CDs in this box set with the original releases doesn't yield any noticeable differences to my ear. One might have hoped that earlier analog cuts might have been better de-hissed and cleaned up, for example, but such processing is not evident. So, we must treat this for what is: a rare, out-of-print collection of The Best of Abbado's First 25 Years. It functions something like DG's Complete Beethoven Edition, which is also out-of-print -- namely, it becomes something that gains collector status with time.
There is variety aplenty in this boxset (which Holschneider intended to achieve). Enough Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Schubert to please less adventurous ears, but some Berg and Stravinsky to push the envelope a bit. Quite a few orchestras are heard here: Chicago, London Symphony, Vienna Phil, Berlin, Boston, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, etc. Some are live performances (e.g., the Eroica with the Vienna Philharmonic). There is a mix of analog and digital recordings, pretty much determined by recording date. But as a "sampler," you get nothing complete in any mini-genre. Why program the Brahms 2nd symphony, but not the 1st or 4th? Why program 2 CDs of Mozart piano concertos, but not a single Mozart symphony? We get symphonies 3,5,6, and 7 of Beethoven's, but no 9th. Why didn't DG configure this set to include all 9 Beethoven symponies and all 4 Brahms symponies, plus Mozart's symphonies 35-41? Wouldn't the appeal of this collection have quadrupled knowing you were getting some sequences of major works without gaping holes?
Well, the simple reason this didn't happen is because DG President Andreas Holschneider has a Ph.D., and knows better than folks like us on how to market Abbado and program a box set. On the other hand, this box set isn't in print anymore. Maybe that Ph.D. didn't come in all that handy after all.
The performances are 5 stars, the recordings would have been awarded 5 stars IF we were living in the year the recording was done. But nowadays, we have a right to expect better sound in the re-mastering process. What has been programmed is played with intensity and integrity, and always with a deft hand, but the program contents leave something to be desired (as noted above). If the intent is to leave you "wanting more," I suppose this sampler achieves that. This principle obviously works in the case of "opera highlights" from Carmen and Aida. But others might simpy be annoyed at the "set list."
If you simply like Claudio's work (as do I), grab this set. You'll find Claudio at his best here, insofar as his first quarter-century with DG is concerned. On the other hand, he's doing some amazing stuff the last several years, with an exceptionally strong, new Mahler cycle coming into view album by album.
