When an indie-rock band as intimately and fiercely loved as Death Cab for Cutie makes the inevitable major-label jump, it often telegraphs a painful death. Witness Husker Du, the Replacements, Nirvana--hell, even R.E.M. After a successful four-album run on tiny Seattle imprint Barsuk, however, Death Cab for Cutie just might buck the trend on its Atlantic premiere. Yes, you can grumble about the production (a little too slick), the proportion of ballads (a little too many) and the overall feeling of restraint (a little too much), but ultimately the album delivers everything the group does best in emotional, experimental songs such as "What Sarah Said" and "I Will Follow You into the Dark," which both blend stark lyrical details with acoustic guitars and soft-focus electronics. In "Soul Meets Body," meanwhile, songwriter Ben Gibbard has come up with the kind of blissful, beatific pop song that's capable of disarming even the harshest skeptic. "A melody softly soaring through my atmosphere," he sings. --Aidin Vaziri

Some fantastic singles.......2007-06-27
This is the only Death Cab album I like, but it's an amazing one. If you're new to the band, start here!
I'll follow You into the Dark!.......2007-05-16
My wife and I heard the tract "I'll Follow You Into the Dark" on Jay Leno and since August is our 44th Anniversary we thought it would be the perfect song to play at the renewing of our vows. Suprisingly the entire CD was as awesome as the one song we had heard and we've enjoyed every one on it. It's a little different than what we've always listened to, things like Steppenwolf and Led Zepplin, but we've become fans of "Death Cab For Cutie!"
Hoping to pull this up to 4.5 stars..........2007-04-11
I would actually give Plans 4.5 stars, but I am rating it a 5 to help pull the overall rating to a 4.5.
This was my introduction to Death Cab For Cutie by a friend. She made me listen to "Soul Meets Body", and I was in love with that song. I purchased the album, and to my surprise, there were a few tracks I liked more than "Soul Meets Body". There are a couple of tracks that don't work well ("Brothers on a Hotel Bed", for instance), but when it does work well, it's a mellow and beautiful listen.
Standout tracks: "Marching Bands of Manhattan", "I Will Follow You Into the Dark", "Crooked Teeth", "Soul Meets Body", "Summer Skin", "Your Heart is an Empty Room".
IT'S ALL GOOD.......2007-03-23
I bought this CD after hearing "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" and "Crooked Teeth." The whole CD is quite good, and some of it is relaxing, too. We actually listened to it during dinner. It was good straight through. Haven't heard much of "Death Cab For Cutie" other than this CD, but would definitely check them out more now!
Pleasantly Surprised!.......2007-03-11
Somewhere I heard their track "Follow me into the dark" and the accoustic guitar caught my attention. I don't listen to the radio that much since I don't have a long commute - kitchen to office type thing. The other day I heard it again and this time I caught the name of the album - I'm notorious for not knowing the names of bands and this one zipped by me too. I know what I like and I know good music when I hear it. Frequently when I've bought a CD for one track I'm disappointed by the tone or quality of the rest ... but, not in this case. They have the quality of many of the bands from the 60s, but they are original and thoughtful in their writing. This record is relatively mellow, but it has as pleasant energy about it. Similar to another review here on Amazon, I'm interested in looking into their previous work and will look for new releases from them. If someones doesn't talk them out of their own style and will let them alone to continue to develop it, they'll be around for a long time I'm quite certain.

Kamelot's latest power metal offering seems unlikely to win the collective the kind of major attention its sought for more than a decade now. While vocalist Roy Khan still emits his signature siren wail and guitarist Thomas Youngblood crafts riffs that crunch with more power than your average fast food taco, the band still lacks a unique identity, alternating between its status as a Queensryche retread or vying for listeners more attuned to Korn and Avenged Sevenfold. "Rule the World" certainly stands as one of the outfit's heaviest works to date and "Mourning Star" carries with it its own kind of majestic beauty but repeat listens reveal that Ghost Opera is little more than by-the-numbers power metal, of the kind that didn't really work when Helloween released Keeper of the Seven Keys two decades ago and still fails to satisfy today.--Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
American Melodic Metal masters Kamelot are back with the follow-up to their breakthrough epic The Black Halo. Ghost Opera is simply one of the most diverse metallic listening experiences of the year, containing all of the melody, power, passion and crunch that have earned them the undying respect of metal-heads around the country and around the world. The first pressing contains a bonus DVD featuring the video of Ghost Opera and a making of feature. Catch Kamelot on tour across North America late this summer!
Customer Reviews:
Well worth the money!!! Bogus DVD or not!.......2007-07-23
I REALLY like this album and am glad to see that Kamelot is continuing to evolve and mature. So many bands of this genre begin to get stagnant and eventually stale after every album begins to sound the same.
But I'm kind of conflicted as well due to one simple fact. I can think of many, many cases where a certain album by a band is a better album overall than it's predecessor, but that predecessor just happens to have that one single song that is better than anything on the newer release. Of course this is all personal opinion but two genre examples that quickly come to mind are Ozzy and Maiden.
I feel that Diary of a Madman is better overall than Blizzard of Oz though nothing on Diary quite equals the one-two punch of "Revelation (Mother Earth)" and "Steal Away the Night". And while I think Piece of Mind is superior to Number of the Beast overall, it doesn't have anything that tops the magnificent "Hallowed Be Thy name".
Ghost Opera is like this; while I think it's (slightly) better overall, I haven't heard anything that tops Black Halo's "March of Mephisto". But, reading the reviews, I see that many fans like Halo better overall anyway.
In any case, I really like "Rule the World", "Love you to Death", "Up Thru the Ashes", "Edenecho" and the bonus track "The Pendulous Fall". And, if the band continues to evolve in this way...I can't wait for the next one!! But I have to say the "bonus" DVD wasn't worth it, only 2 videos and one was a making of..., but, then again I haven't seen one yet that didn't come with the DVD so I wonder how much cheaper it would have been?
Now if they'd just come to Atlanta (or anywhere closer than a 10 hr drive) so I can go see them!!!! Because, judging by the "One Cold Winter's Night" DVD and what I'm hearing on Ghost Opera..... I'd sure like to!!!
world class music once again from kamelot.......2007-07-23
From start to finish once again this band really keeps coming with great melodies. khan's keeps showing us his unlimited range of vocal notes. I love the production as well, sacha peith(spelling) is a master producer, the way instruments are arranged is just brilliant. and the album grows on you instantly and just want to listen to it again and again. my fav tracks are:
intro & rule the world, ghost opera, and number 6 which i can't remember the title!!
although as people have already said there are more than usual number of ballads, these ballads are just great, nice vocals, strong melodies and wonderful lyrics. I can't wait for their next one..hopefully they will bring out a concert dvd for this album too.
"Sometimes I tremble when the shades unfurl".......2007-07-20
4.5 stars. While this album is certainly closer to 5 stars than to 4 stars, I simply cannot put in the same category as their last, epic, majestic "The Black Halo". That album has everything that is great about Kamelot: excellent production, Khan's emotive vocalizations, and a roller-coaster ride of tempo shifts. The last bit of praise is actually my only complaint about "Ghost Opera", which contains mostly mid-tempo songcraft with the always great choruses and darkening lyrics. In fact, the only ballad here is "Anthem", which is acceptable, but it is nowhere near the fantastic level of "Abandoned" from "The Black Halo". I would also have to say that "Ghost Opera" is even blacker in tone than their past few albums. I actually enjoy this quite a bit as I prefer the darker side of emotion as it tends to be more interesting to decipher. Overall, "Ghost Opera" is a welcome addition to Kamelot's already extraordinary catalog. Highly recommended.
The bonus DVD is a joke, unfortunately, as it contains the video for "Ghost Opera" and then a replay of the same video which shows how the special effects were added and such. That's it. However, the bonus track "The Pendulous Fall" is excellent, so I heartily recommend purchasing this "Enhanced" version of the album for that reason alone.
"WELCOME ALL/TO CURTAIN CALL.......2007-07-17
Thus begins the refrain of the third and title track. If you have read any of my other reviews, you know the title is a favorite or meaningful lyric from the songs in the CD. Sometimes finding title-worthy lyrics can be difficult, but not with Kamelot. This title reflects the music type, as does the CD's name, The Ghost Opera. I find it more symphonic than The Black Halo, and if there is anything better than power metal, it is symphonic power metal. None-the-less, I think Black Halo is slightly better overall, but Ghost Opera is easily another five star production by Kamelot. Again every song is excellent in all aspects: lyrics, vocals and instrumentals.
Track one is a one minute violin solo that blends smoothly into the power of the second track. And here we immediately encounter the striking words "sometimes I tremble like a little child/that faces morning with a broken smile." Rule the World is the song, but it is about ruling your life. In fact, this whole CD is about life...and death.
You will notice a considerable contrast between The Human Stain (track 4) and track 10, Anthem, a beautiful ballad. In Anthem we have "what's a miracle/if life itself is not" and "I do know this/I'll be the best I can." Compare that to "but it hurts to be alive my friend/in this silent tide we're driftwood passing by/don't you wish you were a child again" and "but it hurts to be alive my friend/in this masquerade where all one day must die/don't you wish you were unborn again" in The Human Stain. And there in two songs, Kamelot has condensed the whole conundrum of being human. It can be wonderful just being alive and being able to comprehend life, but that package includes the knowledge of death.
Just as Black Halo had a connection to Epica, here we have two connections to The Black Halo. The first, Simone Simons beautiful voice being again included in one of the songs (Blucher, which seems to be about the death of a German sailer in World War I), is minor, but I find the second intriguing. Black Halo has the haunting Abandoned where Khan sings the part of Christ in the Agony in the Garden. In Ghost Opera, Khan moves to a subsequent setting and plays the part of Pilate in Up Through the Ashes. If you listen carefully, you will even here the crowd chant "Barabbas." I'm wondering if the next release will fittingly end with the Crucifixion. (I may have to send Kamelot a copy of this review.)
Now, since two of the songs here, Love You to Death and The Pendulous Fall, deal with suicide, and the others with life/death in general, I again, as in my previous review, must ask myself if the subject matter has not overly influenced my attraction to the music. Again I say that the music itself is enough. However, nearly everyone has experienced the grief of loss, or considered, to some extent, their own death. Therefore, this is part of the attraction, just as it is in many examples of the best books, poems and movies. I've said it before, I'll say it again, these guys can write. (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)
Kamelot delivers and never disapoints!!.......2007-07-16
This is one of the greatest power metal bands of our time. This CD will not disappoint. GET IT! Kamelot has always been consistent in their art form. Every song on here is good..its one of those CD's you can listen to all the way through. Their coming to my town on Sept 7th...cant wait. Amazing work! I recommend this CD for anyone.

Behemoth does it again!.......2007-07-17
Once again... Behemoth delivers a spectacular album... and continues to surprise the listeners with new elements. I really love the chants and soprano vocals among all the other 'middle eastern' sounding instruments... it adds a lot to the music. The guitar work and drumming still draws from the vein of Demigod, but it lookes like they drew a little bit from their Zaios Kon Kultos album *forgive me all you deadly serious fans if I spelled it wrong*. The vocals aren't as blended together like they were in Demigod, but still have that excellent growl that lets you knew 'yep... this be Nergal and crew....' I pretty much can't name a favorite here because every track is good... no let downs so far.
Matched only by Ithyphallic.......2007-07-17
The metal gods have blessed us with two of the strongest metal releases of the year on the same day! The Apostasy is further evidence that Nergal and crew are playing for keeps. From the brutal metal instrumentation to the epic choir to the haunting piano work by Leszek Mozdzer on Inner Sanctum, this album is perfect. I'm pleased to see a return of Nergal's more raw and straight forward vocals. On Demigod, at times they seemed to be a little over processed. As with each release by Behemoth, I find myself once again amazed. This album, as well as Ithyphallic by co-metal giants, Nile, represents the pinnacle of death metal for 2007! Buy them both!

Ennio Morricone is well-known to moviegoers. His soundtracks for The Mission, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Cinema Paradiso, and others are invariably warmly melodic and superbly suited to the films they grace. They not only add atmosphere; they help tell the story. For this CD Morricone has created new orchestrations for many of his scores, adding a solo cello part for the indefatigable Yo-Yo Ma, whose musical curiosity seems to be endless. Outside the films, these pieces tend to be lovely melodies, mostly pretty sentimental stuff, and, in the best way, gorgeous aural wallpaper. The most moving are the two selections from The Mission, but fans of Morricone's music will find plenty to enjoy here. Ma's playing, as always, is exquisite---warm, deeply felt (given the circumstances), and entirely idiomatic within the context. Perhaps not quite for the classical music lover, but an affectionate reworking of music by an important film composer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Is it bad to say I like this better than the original soundtrack?.......2007-06-02
I never thought Yo-Yo Ma would do Gabriel's Oboe (Track 1) from THE MISSION justice, but I was wrong. There's a pureness to this version that makes it easier casual listening than the version(s) on the soundtrack CD itself. So no matter how much I love the theatrical "largeness" of the Original Soundtrack (not to mention the full choir), this is the version I grab for the CD player/iPod/whatever.
My two other recommendations are Main Theme from ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (Track 11) and Ecstasy of Gold from THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (Track 12). I suggest playing these consecutively as a single medley. Track 11 *WILL* bring tears to the manliest among us --particularly if you remember in the movie where Sergio Leone pulls the camera up to reveal the town rising.
I get the feeling "hardcore" classical fans would dismiss movie scores as commercial work. I truly believe Ennio Morricone transcends that. Even moreso than, say, John Williams, and on a different plane than a Danny Elfman. And I can't say more about the emotion Yo-Yo Ma brings to the table than what's already been discussed.
Absolutely Exquisite.......2007-05-15
The combination of Morricone and Ma is pure perfection. This CD fills my heart with so much joy that I could just cry. I listen to it almost daily and have given it away as a gift to my loved ones. I am captivated by their incredible talents, and I know you will be too.
Yo Yo Ma and the Maestro Marvelous!!!.......2007-05-13
Having recently succumbed to Yo Yo Ma after a longtime love of Ennio Marricone I was excited to get this CD from Amazon. It is superb! All of the songs had to be recrafted by Morricone to suit Yo Yo Ma but it is a great listen as you sonically travel down memory lane through some of Maestro Moricone's musical marvels. "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" now becomes "Gabriel's Cello." I laugh as Yo Yo Ma bows his brains out on the "Ecstacy of Gold' from "The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly." I recommend this to all Yo Yo Ma and Morricone fans...a great listen. Soothing after a hard day!
Better Every Time.......2007-05-09
This CD gets better with every listening. It was a great purchase.
Fabulous CD.......2007-05-07
I love Morricone and this CD has some of the best versions of my favorite pieces. I have ordered several as gifts for friends.

With songs equal to those on We Have the Facts and a lush, brilliant production that continues what The Photo Album started, Transatlanticism is easily Death Cab's best record to date. Much attention has duly been focused on doe-eyed singer/lyricist Ben Gibbard, co-star of the Postal Service phenomenon, and Ben's voice is as strange, beautiful, and as strong as ever on these songs, which deal with the difficulties of long-distance relationships. But guitarist/producer Chris Walla once again proves himself to be the band's secret weapon, layering subtle sonic touches throughout Transatlanticism, which is most definitely a "headphone record." This Seattle quartet is one of the only bands to really have picked up the intelligent, emotionally resonant, and guitar-driven indie-pop torch that Built to Spill briefly lit in the mid-1990s (before themselves heading off to the stoner-rock territory). DCFC themselves seem poised to finally break out to a wider audience, and they truly deserve it with this disc. --Mike McGonigal

meh.......2007-05-25
It's okay. A friend of mine gave me a mix one time that had Title and Registration on it. I bought it because thats one of my favorite songs and I was hoping that all the songs on the album would be that good. Theres a couple other good ones on there but I am not a hardcore Death Cab fan either so I'm sure all you hardcore Death Cab fans will scoff at me for not falling head over heals for Transatlanticism. Its an okay album but not one of my favorites.
these songs are so wonderful.......2007-02-27
Passenger Seat and Lightness are my favorite songs. If you have to buy one album this year buy this one. It is a great album. This is not shouting junk like nu-metal. This music is fun and it is easy going so you can listen when you are relaxing. it is good with lyrics that are thoughtful. I dont know but I was thinking this might be the best album I have heard all year besides the Babel soundtrack. I would really like to see this band in concert. I think this style of music can be enjoyed by many people whether they like folk, alternative or blues. This album may not grab you right off the bat but I myself find the more I listen to it the more I love it!
Wow........2007-02-10
I'm fairly new to Death Cab for Cutie. My first exposure to them was Plans, which I love. Saw them live with OK Go last year and really enjoyed it. I got this disc and went into it expecting to think "okay, it's pretty good" because Plans is so familiar and comfortable. However, I listened to it for the first time today and it's phenomenal.
Really.
I was drawn in right from the start with "The New Year", and I'm not going to rate each song, but the entire disc held my attention effortlessly, all the way through to the end. Right now, I like it as much as Plans. Once I become more familiar with it, I'll like it even more.
What can I say..........2007-01-29
You either like DCFC or you don't...or if you like Postal Service you should automatically like DCFC.(Same lead singer.) The added attraction to this album (if you needed one) is that the title track was used in the closing scene for a recent CSI:Miami. On second thought, maybe that's not necessarily an added attraction.
A Great Album.......2007-01-11
This follow up to the spectacular Photo Album has just as many great moments and catchy songs. I find myself inexplicably singing along with nearly every Death Cab for Cutie song I hear, and the ones on this album are no different.

Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez spent $53 million to pay loving tribute to the vintage hundred-thousand-dollar exploitation fare that inspired Grindhouse's two-movies-for-the-price-of-one thrill ride. Tarantino's half of the exercise (which also includes Robert Rodriguez's self-scored Planet Terror) features another effusive slice of the director's eclectic musical sensibility to underscore its manic tale of stuntman/psycho-killer Kurt Russell and his muscle-car-fueled exploits. Tarantino works from a familiar formula that variously mixes evocative, semi-obscure Italian film cues from Morricone and Dinaggio, contrasting slices of '60s catalog from the great Jack Nitzsche and Brit Invasion also-rans DDDBM&T and some '70s fodder from both ends of the Top 40 via Smith and T. Rex, also stirring in a savory mid-disc run of R&B that stretches from PG&E's upbeat read of "Stagger Lee" through more familiar fare from Joe Tex, Eddie Floyd, and the Coasters. The director also serves up a couple of those deliciously off-kilter obscurities that have come to be his musical trademark as a coda: Eddie Beram's thumping "Riot in Thunder Alley" and April March's infectious ditz-pop take on Serge Gainsbourg's loopy "Chick Habit." --Jerry McCulley

Not the best..........2007-07-24
Well, I can't say this is the best Tarantino soundtrack, the assembly of songs is not very homogeneous, and I don't like them all. Some are quite good though like the one from Ennio Morricone, and the Coasters.
love the music.......2007-07-16
don't really appreciate the fact that 3 tracks are dialogs.
i own all tarantino soundtracks and before this one i never really minded the dialogs.. on this one, however, they seem a little out of place.
other than that, i agree with other reviewers who cannot believe the music tarantino digs out for his films! why isn't any of this music the matter of general knowledge? it's great!
been listening to the CD on the way to the coast and back, some 10 times over, and i haven't gotten tired of it yet.
for rest, listen to sampler here on amazon. my favs are track 10 and 16.
enjoy.
DO IT AGAIN!.......2007-06-03
The movies were great - I went to see it 4 times and I am digging in my house to go see it again!
The sounds tracks are just as good - check out the book - it's has the dialogs in it..............Useless talent# 10!
Astounding.......2007-06-03
One listen and you're hooked. At least 6 songs that are fantastic that there's no way I would have encountered without QT. Thanks man, should I expect any less?
Coasters question.......2007-05-31
Another entertaining soundtrack by Tarantino - well worth having. I'm curious about the version of the Coasters' "Down In Mexico" though. It's very different from the one on "Very Best of the Coasters." I can't tell if it's just remixed or another version entirely. I hope some R&B expert can comment on that. Finally, though, another great collection of very diverse sounds.

Guaranteed to kick your spleen up to your face!.......2007-07-24
I must say, I have been a fan of these guys for quite some time now and I was really looking forward to their Sophomore album "Messengers". Usually, when you are highly anticipating something, you can easily be let down and this time, they actually surpassed my expectations and THEN some.
This album is non-stop brutal talent from start to finish! If you are looking for something to pop in your CD player when you are in that mood that you just want to get hyped over some good heavy, fast and talented metal, this is definitely the CD for you.
Trust me, I have thousands of albums, this one definitely resides in my top 3 of all time now. ABR is now definitely above a league of their own. When it comes to this style of metal/music, it has been getting redundant lately, like the phase out of a genre or a fad. They reinvented themselves and the genre.
I highly suggest buying this album to anyone that is into extremely talented metal/hardcore. Hell, even if you are just a drummer, get this and listen to what this guy can do!
Great CD!.......2007-07-24
These guys rock! August Burns Red second album is well done, though I still prefer their first album the most(so far anyways). As I Lay Dying fans will like this CD or vice versa.
well..........2007-07-18
Id be lying if i didnt say that thrill seeker was better in my opinion. I honestly liked the production a lot more on thier debut. Messengers has that high ended sound thats trendy for metalcore bands to use. I felt thats thrill seeker had a much more warmer tone thats i thought complimented their sound. Also I feel the over abundance of breakdowns on this album is a little unessesary. And as a lot of people have already said, pretty much all of them sound remarkebly the same and the overuse of the china makes it all too aparent. It seems to dumb down the album. Im not saying they shouldnt have breakdowns, im saying that they should be used more tastefully. Also as one guy mentioned, Every song does seem to be in the same key. But lets be honest here. so many metalcore bands do that and it bothers me. Its not all bad though. Theres definatley some maturity since TS. But the lack of diversity is what brought it down i think. And dont get me wrong. These guys are very talented. Especially for their age. And they can only grow from here. Id definatley like to see some improvement in the guitar area though. It goes without saying that the drums showcase in this band. I kinda get the feeling that the music could get a lot more complex if the guitars werent so rythmic. As for the vocals, definatly an improvement from their last vocalist. And as for whoever said that singing is emo. They need to shut up. since when did singing suddenly automatically become labeled as emo. Unless its that whiney 15 year old sounding barely able to stay on key singing, Than its not emo. Not everything has to be 'brutal' or 'sick' or whatever. get some variety damnit. by the way, this is my fathers profile or whatever im just using it.
Brutal, however............2007-07-12
Let's start with the positives. The production is terrific, everything sounds crystal clear. This is undoubtedly one of the heaviest albums I've heard to date. The technicality of the guitars and drums is very tight and solid.
Now to the not-so-good. I have to agree with a previous review that states that every single breakdown sounds the same. It's like they wrote 1 breakdown...then changed it by 1 note and used it 11 times. The china is way over used....it's like the drummer thinks he needs to signal to the audience when the breakdowns begin and end. "Well this is the breakdown so i HAVE to use my china..." I don't mean to bad mouth anybody, he's a very talented drummer, but lacks some variety when it comes to writing breakdown beats. I also have to agree with the fact that many of the guitar riffs utilize the same key in every song, resulting in many guitar parts sounding similar. Finally, while the new vocalist is an improvement over the last because of his good range, the vocal patterns can sound thrown together at times.
Overall, like I said...very brutal, but the songs truly lack a lot of individuality and distinction. Maybe that's what they were going for...? Maybe a lot of the hardcore fans do indeed have the "i don't care if it has variety, melody, or harmony, as long as it's heavy" attitude. To each his own I suppose.
sigh.......2007-07-12
ok i never got into their first cd.
this one however has a lot more technical riffs, its a lot cleaner and good production.
HOWEVER, the one thing why i dont like this cd. is the drummer. he's good but her does the same thing during EVERY breakdown. always use his china constantly. i didnt find one breakdown that didnt sound similar cuz their drummer.
and becasue of that, this cd is crappy

Believe Me, It's Still Darkest Hour.......2007-07-25
Darkest Hour's fifth full-length, "Deliver Us", is yet another strong album by this band. Devin Townsend did a nice job producing this album, I must say, but let's get to the music.
"Deliver Us" is a melodic metal album that shows definite progression for the band. The guitars give out more of an epic feel, but are still very similar in the vein of their previous days. John Henry still stands out as a vocalist, and even with singing vocals (which he uses sparingly), he's still intense and stands out well. The best element of "Deliver Us" is the guitar work. Tracks such as "An Ethereal Drain" and "Doomsayer" demonstrate the excellence of guitarists Kris Norris and Mike Scheliebaum that they still carry on. "Stand and Receive Your Judgment" and "Sanctuary" are songs that won't disappoint for those who liked their more speed-oriented "Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation" days. "Demon(s)", the first single, has a catchy chorus and guitar riff. "Tunguska" is a perfect example of a more "epic" track. This CD is able to keep its variety, yet it doesn't disappoint.
Check this out if you're into melodic metal. If you're a Darkest Hour fan, you may notice the change, but listen to it a few times and it'll grow on you. Darkest Hour has progressed well during their years as a band, and "Deliver Us" is proof.
DH has yet to dissapoint me........2007-07-24
I commend Darkest Hour for growing on every album while still maintaining a signature sound of harsh screams and thrashy-melodic guitar work. Some more clean vocals have been added to the mix, less as an experiment this time around than on Undoing Ruin. While some reviewers here complain about this new addition, I feel that they are blended seamlessly into the mix and actually add more intensity to the overall effect. While some bands seem to be making huge changes on their latest albums (Poison The Well, Slipknot), DH has managed to change just enough to keep each album unique without disappointing their fans with a complete overhaul. I feel that this is probably the best album to date (although Mark of Judas will probably always be my favorite). In fact, this is one of the better metal albums I've heard this year.
Horrible........2007-07-24
This CD is horrible, it sickens me to witness people enjoying it. If you were expecting the guitar genius of Sound the Surrender, turn the other way.
The watered-down, generalized singing makes the CD almost unbearable, while the EXTREMELY predictable guitar solos and breakdowns make it downright disappointing.
Also, Darkest Hour sucks live. Sorry guys.
Listen to some Sleep Terror instead. The word most accurately describing this album is "predictable."
Another strong album. Definitely worth buying........2007-07-16
This is Darkest Hour's second album produced by Devin Townsend. He did an amazing job with the experimentation of "Undoing Ruin". What they learned working together on that album really comes out in "Deliver Us". Its almost a masterpiece. The guitar playing stands out the most. Townsend really focused on Kris Norris and Mike Scheliebaum. Amazing solos are all over the place. The drumming and bass is as expected of Darkest Hour -excellent time changes. Together they pulled off an atmosphere that will make this a classic metal album.
Now here is where musicianship comes in. Darkest Hour has grown a lot since "So Sedated.." and they are able to pull off a more epic sound. John Henry had to EVOLVE his vocals to fit. His screams and growls still dominate the album. He has only added another element to his vocals. Kinda like what Matt Heafy had to do with Trivium when they put out the Crusade, except not nearly as extreme.

IN RESPONSE TO OTHER REVIEWS:
There are always those "original" fans that cling on to the old school and reject the new. Yet they fail to make any comparisons between the two sounds. Darkest Hour has been playing this style of metal since they were kids. "Deliver Us" is a progression of that style -the band did not take on a new sound. If I did not follow this band I would assume that "Deliver Us" came before "Undoing Ruin", as it actually ties "..Sadist Nation" and "Undoing Ruin" together. If you loved either one of those albums then you will like this one.
When I first listened to the album and the song Demons came on i thought "what? is john trying to sing?". I was really bored by the chorus on that track. The assumption by the so-called old schoolers is that Darkest Hour is selling out, going main stream, blah blah whine poop mommy whyyyy -But if they were a little more opened minded about the new album instead of expecting the band cover something that was already done ten years ago, they would realize that John is only syncing himself in with the atmosphere Townsend was trying to create. And despite watering down the track Demons, he did an excellent job on the rest of the album. There are parts where growling just would not work. The track A Paradox With Flies is a good example of this.
__________________________________
Stand And Receive Your Judgment is the strongest track on this album for those who like the earlier stuff.
Tungusta is the best example of their evolution for those who were more in to their last two albums.
Five stars. Buy this album. See you at Sounds of the Underground.
Incredible progress from this band.......2007-07-14
These guys have stepped it up even further than Undoing Ruin. Everything great about that album has been expanded and a lot more has been added. They play around a lot more with "cleaner" vocals, although I wouldn't exactly call John Henry's voice a smooth singing type, but it works really well. The first two tracks sound like they could have been from the last album but after that they begin to vary the song elements quite a bit.
Standout tracks for me point to three songs in the middle of the album. "A Paradox With the Flies", "The Light at the Edge of the World", followed by the crushing "Stand and Receive Your Judgment." These three tracks back-to-back make for an awesome summary of the album. The last half of the closing title track has to be one of their best moments as well. Diving into an amazing instrumental part and ending with a destructive version of the chorus.
If you want a good thrash album with some death metal influences, I highly recommend this. These guys have shed their hardcore beginnings for good if this album is going to be a sign of where they are going to continue their musical path.

Happy is the composer who has an advocate as passionate and talented as Leonard Bernstein. These Copland performances have been the preferred versions since they were first issued--better even than the composer's own, later recordings. Originally they were spread over two discs, but thanks to the extended playing time of the compact disc, you can now get all three great Copland ballets together, along with the ever popular Fanfare for the Common Man. Bernstein brings to this music the right sharpness of rhythm but also a typically open-hearted warmth. He coaxes a virtuoso response from the New York Philharmonic, which knows this music as well (or better) than anyone. Self- recommending. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
What more could one ask for?.......2007-06-27
Aaron Copland's masterful works are here interpreted by Bernstein. Nothing says the American sound like Copland, and there is no better interpreter than Bernstein. This recording is one of the best in my collection. I would recommend this to anyone (even non-classical music fans).
Definitive Is Right.......2007-02-27
I have the SACD version of these recordings (except for the "Fanfare" which, in this case, is the version taken from Bernstein's recording of Copland's Third Symphony) and I must agree with others here that the performances are definitive. The "Rodeo" has more energy than any other recording I know of, in fact it can almost go over the top! "Billy the Kid" is quiet and tender, dramatic and bold and "Appalachian Spring" is dead-on. The last section of this ballet is one of my very favorite pieces of music and Bernstein's tempo and phrasing here could well be called perfect.
Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO.......2007-02-11
Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally remastering this recording, offering some of the best sound I've heard from a vintage Leonard Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recording. But more importantly than the recording's superb sonic quality is the quality of these performances of Copland's scores. Bernstein leads in New York Philharmonic in these virtuoso performances, replete with lush, vibrant playing from the winds, horns and strings. His warm, truly heart-felt interpretation of "Applachian Spring" is truly mesmerizing, and the best I have heard from a recording. And yet, I am am just as impressed with his conducting of both "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid"; the latter replete with superb solos from the orchestra's timpanist. An elegant performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" closes out this CD recording. Fans of Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra shouldn't hesitate in acquiring this superb CD.
American Music at its Highest .......2007-02-04
If I was forced to recommend one CD of American music, I would feel very safe in backing this one. These interpretations have yet to be surpassed, and not even Copland himself could muster the same type of perfection that Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic did in this recording. Bernstein's way with Rodeo is unbelievable, and this alone is worth the price of the disc. The music on this recording has a lot to do with why, as Americans, we can all be proud of our place in the history of western music.
With 39 reviews under me, I will dispense with the adjectives to try and describe each interpretation of each piece on this disc, and simply say that these performances have been recommended by almost everyone (professional critics included of course) since they appeared; get it and find out why.
The best of Copland.......2007-01-09
For the Aaron Copland fan, this CD has the essentials: the most popular and easy listening of the Copland body of creations. Enjoy!

Amused to Death is perfectly titled; it conveys its maker's mordant humor and underlying pessimism. Roger Waters's third solo album allowed a faint but perceptible return to the sound of his estranged former band, Pink Floyd. There are moments here ("What God Wants," "Three Wishes") that recall nothing so much as the densely textured sound of Animals and The Wall. And like those works, this is a concept album--the concept (as ever with Waters) being the crappy nature of modern life. Fair enough, but as usual, his satire is blunt and the targets of his scorn obvious. Former Eagle Don Henley duets on "Watching TV," while Jeff Beck contributes taut, lyrical solos to a number of tracks, notably "It's a Miracle." Waters's voice, however, remains the same: a weary whisper, positively dripping with contempt. --Andrew McGuire
Customer Reviews:
The Final Cut Part 2.......2007-07-12
What a great album. Just goes to show the brains behind some of the majestic Pink Floyds's finest songs were Roger Waters. Genius
My Mind is Growing,.. I can feel it........2007-06-09
This album receives much criticism from "Pink Floyd" fans, who after knocking this amazing album probably pop in "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" and descend into the abyss of cheesy guitar solos and empty lyrics that is the post Roger Waters "Pink Floyd" (note the quotation marks). This album is proof that, after Syd left the band, Roger Waters WAS Pink Floyd. His band mates had an amazing sound, and they gave life to his visions, but he gave each record after Dark Side its concept, its substance, its life. On Pros and Cons, and Radio KAOS, Roger has trouble capturing the Floyd's sonic grace, but on Amused to Death, he captures the spirit of the Floyd perfectly. As Such, I consider this a Pink Floyd record, the first to come out after "The Final Cut" (another amazing record and a must listen if you enjoy this album). Jeff Beck is on Par with Gilmour on this album, especially on tracks like "What God Wants" (pts 1&3). This record is a tour de force, Roger Waters' requiem for the human race, and its message is still relevant a decade later. This is not an easy album to love, it takes repeated listens to understand its message, and by listens, I mean sitting down, listening to the entire record and thinking thorough each track, as another reviewier put it perfectly, you must give this record as much thought as Mr. Waters gave it to understand and love it. I recently saw Roger in Atlanta on his Dark Side tour, and it was indeed a Pink Floyd concert. David Gilmour fought Roger for the rights to use the Pink Floyd name, and after winning, released two albums, one Horrid, and one mediocre. Roger Waters, however, on albums like this, and on his exceptional tours, keeps the Floyd alive, despite Gilmour having hijacked the name. Thank you Roger, for your vision, your talent, and for the years of amazing music that is your gift to the world. Rock on Roger, keep the Floyd alive, and save us from "On An Island."
A must have, incredible album .......2007-05-21
This is Roger Waters at its best, it is one of the best album of the decade in my mind (the 90's) This cd is what we often call "a desert island cd" if you see what I mean.
Brilliant.......2007-05-09
If this was a PF album it would be considered a classic. The only reason it remains unknown outside the PF fan circle is prolly a matter of distribution. This album shows off Roger Waters artistically ambitious compositions: songs that have great rythmn and forward drive in addition to compelling lyrics. The songs just seem natural and unforced. It is a wonderfully relaxing album to listen to with beautiful textures and great playing. I never tire of it, and it seems as fresh as when it first came out.
Bravo.......2007-03-13
I obtained this CD when it first came out and I think I listened to it once or twice, then stored it away for years with the impression that it was just a collection of rambling tunes and sounds, hard to follow and containing no real down and out, full balls-out musical grooves like Mr. Waters can deliver when he wants. Maybe I've just matured a little since then, thinking more about substance than style, but since I brought it out again I've listened to it over and over and over and am simply amazed at what I've been missing. The overall product is a statement on the scary direction civilization seems to be to be heading, usually in the search of the almighty dollar and in the wars we wage. The production is stunning and the lyrics are scathing. As the CD begins, we hear a very old man quietly recounting what seems like a fascinating story at first but you quickly realize that it is a terrible one, and that you are listening to a veteran of the First World War. The songs that follow illustrate the idea of how civilizations justify their behaviors in war, arms races, global domination etc., the state of technology and the ever-increasing obsessions we/they have with all things material, and not the things that really, really matter. Heady stuff, once again from Mr. Waters but I wouldn't expect anything less. After the music reaches its ultimate conclusion we return once again to the veteran and the conlusion of his story and the real impact of everything hits the heart; He is the whole point. He is the human element and because his delivery is so mild and unassuming, because he sounds on the surface like he could be talking about anything but the terrible tragedy he has carried with him all his life, the poignancy is all the more overwhelming. How many millions of him are out there?
