Amazon.com essential recording

This slam-bang, take-no-prisoners account of the Paganini Caprices is just the thing for a rainy day. Considered the last word in virtuoso violin technique when they were composed--and still quite a challenge today--these delightful miniatures each get played to the hilt by Perlman, reveling in their technical intricacies while also making the most of their lively charm and musicality. This is simply one of the best solo violin recordings available, and it belongs on any Perlman fan's shortlist. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Perlman.......2007-06-11

I'm not going to be a purist on recordings of these pieces. I know Perlman as one of the great violin players of our time, and he certainly does not disappoint his audience on this CD. I still wonder how on earth anyone is capable of producing such music from a simple violin, be it composer or performer. Breathtaking - technically but also artistically.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best Perlman, and definately not the best recording of these capricci.......2006-01-19

Although I love (almost) all of Perlman's recordings and playing, I was mortified by these caprices. Although he deserves some credit for the speed he takes, the sound quality and intonation is lacking from what I have heard. Almost everything is sharp, and his sound is not focused enough for everything to come out clearly. I would recommend Midori's recording of these over Perlman's, because of a beautiful sound throughout all 24, and almost completely perfect intonation.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2005-10-10

Anyone who can play Paganini this well deserves 10 stars. Check out track 5!

5 out of 5 stars The best Paganini Caprices in the world.......2005-08-14

I have listened to three versions of Paganini's 24 Caprices and all I can say is that this is probably the best version around period. Itzhak Perlman is someone I could worship for this recording. His rendition makes you feel that the maestro Paganini is the one playing. In its label it says "Great Recordings of the Century" I could never disagree with that.

5 out of 5 stars Art, technique and music.......2005-07-05

So what can we say about Perlman's technique? With his sweet tone and carefully controlled speed, Perlman's playing of the Caprices is simply flawless. One may critise that his playing lacks the spontaneous excitment which Rabin offers, but it's obviously a trade-off.

To me, Perlman is very smart -- in the sense that he learned from but not copied from Heifetz. He has never tried to make his playing as fast as Heifetz's. The smartest thing is that he knows the difference between a studio recording and live recording. If you compare Perlman's concerto perfromances (studio v.s. live) then you can immediately note the difference between their speed and the amount of pressure given. A recording with too much stress can't stand repeated listening although you may call it dazzling at the first glance.

Buy this CD and compare it with Rabin's. You will love Perlman's honey-toned, technically flawless playing -- once you realise this is Perlman's art and Perlman's music.

5 out of 5 stars Accardo Is As Great As The Greats! A True Virtuoso of Paganini! Epic Performances!.......2005-10-13

Nicolo Paganini is primarily a virtuoso composer who did not compose anything other than for the violin in the early 19th century. He was a true prodigy of the instrument whose ferocious and innovative style of playing frightened many of the credulent folk into thinking he was the devil. With the increasing popularity of the waltz, he along with other romantics such as Beethoven completely revolutionized the concept of violin concertos that were still then mostly in the antiquated Roccoco menuet formulas of Mozart and Haydn. The caprices are more technical excercises for this new revolutionary style and are the cornerstones of all Romantic traditions of violin including the Romantic German and, to a much lesser extent, the Polish/Klezmer tradition of Joseph Joachim.

Salvatore Accardo is an accomplished violinist who performed many times with the most reputable groups such as I Musici di Roma and the English Chamber Orchestra. He was a long-time mentor of Anne-Sofie Mutter who performed with Karajan. Despite working often with various Baroque styles, Salvatore Accardo is primarily a specialist at Paganini and the Italian Romantic period and this is the main reason this recording is one of the best you can obtain for Paganini. Charles Dutoit is also an accomplished orchestral conductor and generally works very well with Rossini whose light romantic style in his operatic overtures have overlaps with the style in Paganini's contemporary symphonic arrangements for his violin concerti. Accardo and Dutoit were therefore a perfect match in performing Paganini and this ablum is a great example along with their other collaborations for the composer available on single CD. The music is light and joyful in its interpretation while many others tend to be heavy and sluggish. Accardo's performance is filled with vitality as he has complete mastery over the instrument and feels at ease in his performance without ever faltering. His performance brings out the fluidity and full range of Paganini's style very well. Salvatore Accardo's performance of the caprices is also legendary in which he performs all of the most difficult pieces briliantly without effort: they are truly divine in every respect!

Although it's extremely difficult to make a judgment call between these three undisputed virtuosos of the violin and Paganini, Perlman and Heifetz would not be my first choices because they are not really masters of the Italian Romantic style as that of the German/Polish/Klezmer traditions. However technical the differences might be, they do make a significant difference and so I prefer Accardo for Paganini as he is simply the foremost expert with this composer and the Italian Romantic style which Heifetz and Perlman are not. This album is a great buy where you can get all of Paganini's passionate violin concerti and caprices at a good price. There are really few if any performances equal to this one on the market other than those of Perlman and Heifetz. Such other performances, even by child prodigies, are simply beneath them in every respect to the point that they actually sound amateurish in comparison. No matter which of the three you choose, you can't really go wrong with any of them but I would really look no further than them as everything else is far beneath their legendary talents. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars What a man! What a Violin! What an Artist!.......2002-04-06

Salvatore Accardo has played magnificently! I am not a classical music critic; I don't know what it really means to be a great violinist, but I certainly enjoy listening to every song in this 6 cd set. I am fifteen years old, but Paganini's music has a great impact on me. My mother bought me this album for Christmas, and I couldn't have received a more wonderful collection of music. I tend to have a preference for the first recording I ever hear of certain songs, and I have heard several of these songs performed by different artists. Let me tell you, these recordings are fantastic. My favorites are the 21st Caprice, the second movement of the 6th concerto, and the entire 4th concerto. Accardo's tone is rich and robust, and the orchestra behind him compliments him perfectly.
Utterly Satisfied,
Bobby

P.S. The title for my review was what Franz Liszt (classical pianist and composer) exclaimed when he heard Paganini perform.:)

5 out of 5 stars Definitive Recordings of Paganini's Violin Music.......2001-10-16

Salvatore Accardo performs Paganini's scores with much elegant grace and warmth. Deutsche Grammophon has successfully assembled all of Accardo's recordings of Paganini's music. Undoubtedly, the highlights are Accardo's riveting accounts of Paganini's violin concerti. Charles Dutoit and the London Philharmonic Orchestra give splendid, warm performances of their own, without overwhelming Accardo's playing. Yet Accardo also shines in Paganini's solo works, such as the Caprices. This is absolutely an essential set of CDs for those who are unfamiliar with Paganini's music. Is it a surprise that these performances are still regarded as definitive in classical CD guides issued by Grammophone and Penguin?

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent for collectors.......2001-02-01

This is a really masterpiece for collector. For the people that love the "virtuoso-violin", this is yours. If you are a fanatic of Paganini's music like me, this is your collection, because you will find the Maestosa sonata sentimentale, the Duo Merveille, "God save the King", in a perfect interpretation, only by Accardo, that are very difficult to find. The 6 Concertos, are amazing, if it is your first time hearing Paganini, you will find absolutely incredible, and remember, is only one violin performing those sounds. Double-Stops, Harmonics, Double-Harmonics, and the most colorful bowing performance. Paganini is very romantic and sentimental, the six, second movements are a jewel in your collection. I recomend you that adquire this for your personal collection, the case is beautiful, and the sound is powerful, like the recorders of the Deutsche Grammophon, Accardo plays Paganini transmiting to the listener the feeling of his performance. The 24 Caprices are interesting, and Accardo plays very clear, if you are playing the caprices, this is a good guide, please try to listen the sound of Accardo, you could find many tips in his performance. If you like the music in general, these concertos will give you a different vision and nature of the power of a violin with the London Philarmonic Orchesta. PROs - Excelent Violinist (Accardo), Excelent Presentation (CDs, book and case),Excelent Recorder, each CD has a number, the people take your time making this CD - Each Piece has a good explanation CONs - No are biography of Salvadore Accardo.

4 out of 5 stars Shredding on Violin.......2007-01-30

Those heavily into electric guitar will recall the hey-day of the 80's where long long hair and "shredding" were the order of the day. Many of those guitarists would noodle about with Paganini's 5th Caprice as a mark of their superior skill and so forth... so I picked up this CD in the bargain bin (lo and behold it's regarded as one of the top few recordings of the Caprices ever made), and it began to occur to me that Nicolo Paganini was the first "shredder."

By "shredder", I mean both the good and bad that come with the term: the technique required to execute these daunting pieces of music is truly spectacular, but at the same time I only consider about half of them to be truly interesting as music. I can think of some very ordinary stuff that I'd rather listen to due to simple aesthetic reasons. The much celebrated 24th Caprice, for instance, is to me an incredibly boring etude and nothing more... sure it's supremely difficult and features a decidedly non-violin-sounding section, but it really doesn't go anywhere musically: the whole point of it is simply to be really hard!

At the same time, I love the purely technical aspect of pushing the boundaries of our skillset with any given instrument, and Paganini did that: opening the door for greater compositions since the pallette to draw upon became that much larger. This is a positive! People who blast modern day guitar shredders while celebrating Paganini don't know what they're talking about - Paganini was the first and foremost shredder of them all!

Anyway, all that aside, what about this particular CD... it's pretty amazing to say the least. Every generation has a virtuoso (if not a few), and they're all amazing... so with that said, I'm a fan of modern recording, and this was done in 1995, so it features great CD quality... Ehnes being a top-notch virtuoso who really goes for it here - that's all it takes: one of the best recordings, bar none.

5 out of 5 stars ADDICTIVE.......2007-01-14

While not a Mozart connoseur, I found this 2-CD work
very well done. Comprising all of Mozart's work for
solo violin with orchestra, Mr. Ehnes own genius and
enthusiasm shows through in the performances and in
his selection of equally enthusiastic musicians to accompany
him in the recordings. The sound of the Stradivarius is
fantastic.
I have not been able to get the CDs out of my car in over a month...

5 out of 5 stars Great But Not The Best.......2006-04-12

I Love Paganini's 24 Carprices!! i can even play 5 of them on Guitar,James Ehnes recording is great but i perfer Perlmen's caprices im really tired of seeing these reviews saying that Perlmen's are not that good,He Did The Greatest Job with the caprices.I Recommend This but Reall Listen To Perlmen!! He's Amazing!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Agreed.......2005-10-10

I had Perlman's first, then I heard this one was better. I was wondered how anyone could be "better" than what Perlman did, so I checked it out, and I actually agree. Just seems a little cleaner and smoother. Both are incredible.

5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2005-03-17

I agree with many of the other reviewers. I love Itzhak Perlman's playing, but I must say this CD is probably the one to get. Sound quality is very good.

5 out of 5 stars INNOVATIVE AND STUNNING.......2006-10-28

Lets begin by just saying for the record that the two previous reviewers who spoke negatively about this recording are most likely jealous guitarists who are just trying to make themselves feel a little less inadequate. Give it up, guys, you just make yourselves look pompous and delusional when you presume to imply that you could do better than what is on this c.d. This recording is nothing short of a revelation that pushes the boundaries of modern guitar repetoire. If you love guitar music you must hear this!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant and beautiful.......2006-10-10

This is one of those rare instances where technical genius and artistry meet to create a work of art that is both brilliant and beautiful.

Fisk's playing is stellar, and the recording is crisp and clear. He plays all 24 caprices wonderfully, I am especially impressed with #5...I think I played it three times in a row.

Why is this no longer in print? Luckily I found it used for only $6, what a steal! Hopefully you can find it in the library and burn a copy...hey, if no label is going to publish this masterpiece...

3 out of 5 stars Ahh It's Ok I guess.......2006-06-19

It's cool to have a recording of all 24 of these together but yes I will have to agree with a lot of the negative reviews of this in that it's very sloppy. It seems like he spent very little time on his tone and rhythmic accuracy. I have heard Eliot FIsk play much better. All in all it's still cool to have these all for guitar. There are a few better recordings of some of these out there. No. 11,5,and 24 on a cd of Paganini guitar music on the Naxos label are played by a former pupil of Fisk Marco Tamayo I think is his name he doesn't play quite as fast but cleaner. Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yang on her hard to find cd plays my absolute favourite recording of the 24th Caprice. It's just as fast and played much more precise and beautifully. Numbers 17, and 5 are on the album "Guitar Works" by German guitarist Tilman Hoppstock. He plays them faster than Eliot Fisk for all you speed lovers but he also plays them alot cleaner. Out of all those notes hammered out so fast none of them sound bad like many in this Fisk recording. That's goes more so for his credit to not only play fast but also rhythmically precise and with good tone. So all in all this ok to listen to for study of these 24 caprices for guitar adaptation but there are much better efforts out there.

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Music!.......2006-04-15

I'm a huge instrumental guitar fan, especially stuff from Jason Becker and the whole neoclassical genre; so to say that I was absolutely floored by Eliot Fisk's playing is an understatement. For the purists I'm sure there are sublties of his playing that aren't exactly "perfect", but nonetheless what a tremendous performance he gives on this recording! Every chord, phrase, and arpeggio is well articulated and executed with masterful precision. His rendition of the fifth caprice is also very well done. I also thought his tempo taken through some of the faster caprices was just right; it allowed me to distinquish all the complexities of the music rather than pass by me in a big blur like the violin versions sometimes have a way of doing. This recording would do well in any collection.

5 out of 5 stars True to the Passionate Spirit of Paganini's Caprices !!!.......2004-09-12

Eliot Fisk really took on one of the ultimate challenges of classical guitar in interpreting these dynamic masterpieces of the violin... Eliot succeeded in producing an amazing recording of Paganini's Caprices that captures that gypsy-esque "wild abandon" in the interpretation that is necessary for such flamboyant music... there are passages that are abit sloppy &/or rushed in Fisk's recording BUT even Perlman does this in his wonder-full renditions of these Caprices... to me, it is the passionate spirit of the interpretation that allows me to overlook whatever minor technical flaws in Fisk's playing in this recording... Fisk's understanding of the "feel" of these pieces keeps this fierce music from being boring & pedantic as i have heard in other interpretations of various Caprices... truly exciting listening & unique instrumentation !!! one of my alltime favorite acoustic guitar recordings !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars A flawed recording.......2003-07-30

Midori is quite capable technically of playing all of these very difficult pieces, she is fluid and graceful (if passionless) but I have one major beef with this recording, there is very annoying "tick" sound throughout the recording. I'm not sure if this is something wrong with her bow or what, but it drove me crazy the first time I listened to it and I can't listen to it any more because of that. I can't believe that made it to the final recording. Try the Salvatore Accardo recordings, you've never heard such passion in violin playing, the man is possessed.

4 out of 5 stars excellent.......2003-03-02

Very beautyfull sound. Spectacular technique, specially when she plays chords. Not played like etudes. Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2001-08-03

This recording is a masterpiece proving to this listener the mathematical relationship to the instrument, the artist, and the composer's work. I am both a CPA and attorney. There are bad days and on the worst; Midori's efforts are so uplifting that my energy is restored. Her command of her instrument and strength of works fires the listener as if listening to Wagner's "Ring." Buy it. Love it. It will deliver you to a place of strength.

5 out of 5 stars simply the best.......2000-11-03

This 24 caprices totally marks all the requirements. Her expression comes so vivid through perfect control of the music. She really pays attention to all the details Paganini specifically marked, and she does it so perfectly. Her Caprice no.24 is simply breath-taking. I cannot ask for more to this one. I strongly recommend this one to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A winner.......2000-11-01

This disc is amazing. Midori's technical perfection here surpasses all caprices done by others. I was amazed by her tonal accuracy on all the super difficult double stoppings. She renders each caprice so beautifully. Also the recording quality is very good. Beautiful cathedral like accoustic. Midori's caprice is the best based on all the factors: technique, expression and sound quality.

There is a person in the below who suggested Ruggiero Ricci as the best (must have commented based only on listening to the sound samples.) I am not sure how one can say Ricci's is perfect. It is actually far from perfect. Person who says Ricci's caprice is perfect cannot tell the right keys, tones or violin techniques.

One good thing about Ricci is that he has some Paganini-esque personality, that is he loves to "show off." However, in Ricci's caprices there are just too many unberable moments where he is too rough and ignores all the notes where tonal accuracy is required. Bad for my ears once getting used to today's violinists technical levels. Ricci's caprices are total fun show pieces. (something like a rollercoaster ride)

Michael Rabin's got a style in his caprices. His phrasing is much more sophisticated than Ricci or most of the violin players. Perlman is great, yet not as perfect as Midori. Also, I think he sounds too imposing on each note, pushing too much to the point where lacking in dimension. There is another great recording by James Ehnes. His 24 Caprice is fiery and it's got such a drive. Can be a good match for Midori's.

So far, this disc still stands as the best of Paganini's 24 caprices.

5 out of 5 stars Every cellist should own this recording........2007-07-14

The great Janos Starker has been an incomparable inspiration for countless cellists. The Road To Cello Playing was a generous gesture on Mr. Starker's part that gives all cellists perspective into the self-discipline and consistent hard work (even with the most talented) required to be
a truly great instrumentalist and artist. This is the only CD of it's kind and Mr. Starker presents the world of etudes, caprices, studies and solo sonatas in a vast, musical panorama.

Those who don't own The Road To Cello Playing are passing by a window into the private, lonely world of one of the greatest cellists of all time.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy!!.......2000-09-22

This is a truly amazing recording! I have looked all over for a CD of Popper etudes and as far as I can tell this is the only recording of it's kind. Starker's amazing technique and intonation make this CD a real gem. I only wish he recorded all 40 Popper etudes!!

5 out of 5 stars The only CD I know of like this!.......2000-03-10

If you are an aspiring cellist and want a role model to follow or just want to hear how these etudes SHOULD sound OR enjoy listening to a virtuosic performance then this is the CD for you! Starker is the one cellist who can play techically as well as artistically. Even Yo Yo Ma has not attempted this genre! Enjoyable listening experience. Fun to follow the music as well. Well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-18

I'd purchased Michael Rabin's rendition of Paganini's 24 caprices about a year ago and compared his performance with others that I have in my collection. I would have to put his production on top of the other's. The feel for a piece of music is something that is difficlult to extract from a written piece and is left to some interpretation. The amount of percision and feeling that he interjects into these pieces I think is what makes the difference. The other key ingredient for me is that these recordings were made up close and personal (late 50's)......you can here the bow hiss as it is drawn across the strings as if he were standing right next to you....awesome! Unlike some recordings (more modern) in which they are recorded in a concert hall with that distant reverb effect..........something there is lost!
I done think you'll be disappointed with Michael Rabin.

5 out of 5 stars O.K........2005-03-25

I was fully excited for this recording when it came, and it measures up. The sound quality is terrific, and Rabin is stunning. However, I only say okay because while it is obvious that this man was an incredible violinist, the performance is not clean. When there are repeats, he repeats yes, but takes the first repeat as though it were the second time, seriously tearing the phrasing of the piece. His string crossings are not clean, you can clearly hear open strings, and his fifths are often out of tune. Even more annoyingly on this cd is the fact that some of the caprices are sharp because the recording is old.

The recording also lacks rhythmic integrity. For example, in caprice. For example, in the 10th Caprice, every single four-note, rolled chord is dragged out much longer than the value of an 8th, and then the martellato slurred sixteenths are played much too fast to compensate for this unwritten firmata over the chord. This causes a very uneven rhythm and literally steals the feeling of danse from this movement.

Conversely, this cd is still a must have for many reasons. Many things that would be near impossible to other players, Rabin handles with technical ease. The presto slurred upbow staccato notes in caprice no. 21 are executed with perfection and surprisingly still maintain rhythmic integrity. Rabin's staccato bowing continues to amaze me like in no.5. That caprice is also perfect. It is a shame because i think he really put time into the ones like no. 5 and no. 21. If he had done that with the entire set of caprices, he probably would have done a much better job.

Just another quick note: you won't find a better performance of the 24th anywhere....ANYWHERE. perfect. again. the hard work he did on a few of the caprices shines.

I hope this was helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Great performances by a great volinist........2004-08-18

Although Jascha Heifetz was the most acclaimed violinist of the 20th century, Michael Rabin was fully his equal technically but far superior artistically. In fact, Rabin was equal to, or better than, every violinist of whom we have recordings. Unfortunately, Rabin died in his mid thirties and left relatively few recordings, but his recording of the Paganini Caprices is still regarded as a standard against which all other performances of these works are compared. If you've never heard this outstanding violinist this CD will show you why decades after his premature death Michael Rabin is still regarded as a legendary violinist.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Rabin was to violin what Kapell to piano.......2004-05-22

The early death (36)of Michael Rabin left orphan the musical world.
Rabin faced the challenge that these 24 caprices demand in every violinist and signed a comittment with the inmortality.
These caprices has everything you expect; fierce, lyrics , histamina, tension, skillness and musicality.
No other violinist in the story has reached the height that Rabin did it with this performances.
Buy this CD and you'll check by yourself this statement. I garantee you.

5 out of 5 stars Rabin: The Kapell of violin!.......2005-08-17

What a great loss for the musical world became the early death of Michael Rabin.! His reading of this Op. 1 from Paganini is overwheelming. Absolutely elocuent and passionate vibrato, Rabin convinces us that he belonged to this selected group of musicians (such as Casals, Kempff, Vegh and Edwin Fisher and Ginette Neveu, among others)who had aview who followed his bliss in his interpretations. With the early death of Neveu in 1949 and Rabin in 1957, the world of violin still is orphan.

    5 out of 5 stars Unparalleled perfomance.......2003-03-13

This is the ultimate complete recording of Paganini's 24 Caprices. This should not be mistken, however, for as the best recording of any single caprice, those were made by Kogan (he didn't record all). The playing here is a sort of a meld between the old Russian style, as was the giants of the time, and his teachers Franco-Belgian heritage. The result, perfect intonation, impeccable technique and a broad warm tone. The ninth and seventh caprices are particularly wonderful.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Recording.......2003-03-10

This recording may not be as good as perlman's acoustic-wise, but it's definitely more exciting. Compared to Rabin's playing, Perlman's seems a little too relaxed and boring, although no doubt his skill is superb as well. I would recommend this recording to anyone who likes Paganini Caprices. It's like a thrill ride on a roller coaster.
I also look forward when Vengerov releases his caprices. It'll be another big hit.

2 out of 5 stars Not so good.......2003-03-02

The sound quality is poor (no reverb in the recording). It sounds like playing in a small room.
Intonation is no good, and all caprices are played so fast and no clean, no pretty. Is a simple demostration of speed but no pleasant to the ears.

I recommend listen to Frank Peter Zimmermann recording of the 24 caprices, in second place, Perlman.

5 out of 5 stars Rabin is as good as Heifetz.......2002-09-23

my first recording of the 24 caprices was Perlman's and I thought it was simply unbeatable,That was until I heard Rabin. After that I began to detect all the mistakes Perlman made.Let me say one thing, at the speed Rabin plays the 24 caprices and his unmistakable intonation combined is just unbelievable! The technical heights this violinist has achieved has been equaled by very few violinists.I also love the close up recording in this cd where you can hear every single sound as if he was playing live, right beside you.To say that Rabin is amazing, perfect, awesome, magnificent, outstanding would not be enough, this guy just ROCKS!

5 out of 5 stars best of the best.......2006-10-29

best ive ever heard, including those caprice recordings by perlman, ehnes, rabin, chang, or midori.

shlomo mintz is allergic to kryptonite.

i cant wait for the 24 caprices dvd to come out!

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2006-06-22

I just heard Mintz's Paganini Caprices for the first time, and I came immediately upstairs to my computer to write this review. I am amazed! I have heard a number of versions of these over the years, and I must say, none compare to this.

Those who reviewed Mintz's cd ahead of me said it better than I can. I just want to put an exclamation point on theirs. If you have any doubt at all, put it aside. Shlomo Mintz makes the 24 Paganini Caprices sing, and with absolutely astonishing technique. The beauty of his playing of the 24th Caprice is unsurpassed, in my opinion, including the many renditions of Rachmaninov's Rapture on this theme.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding !.......2005-12-18

I must agree with the last review. I have 6 recordings of the caprices and this ends up on top. Mintz plays in a very different way, unlike other violinists. Just hear the #24, because in other reccordings this one is always the same : It has the same duration(4:40), and its played like a study(specially the eight Var)
Mintz's interpretation is unique (He repeats the second part of every Variation). He plays it in a musical way.
this is really a "must have" for Paganini fans. I highly recomend this recording, forget about the other ones.

    3 out of 5 stars A students opinion.......2004-09-18

This is probably the most popular recording of Paganini's Caprices. Mintz does a very good job. His sound quality is very good as well as intonation and speed. This is a good pick if you are looking a good recording of the 24 caprices. Salvatore Accardo also plays it very well although the recording job wasn't great.

    5 out of 5 stars A just dazzling recording!.......2002-06-10

Mintz's recording of Paganini's Caprices is probably one of the best recordings if not the best. He is technically perfect and his sound has a wonderful quality. But the best thing for me in this recording is that unlike other violinists, who play those caprices just as studies, he makes a very musical interpretation of them, with his well-played dynamics. A "must have" recording for all Paganini fans.
