5 out of 5 stars Get anything Grigory Sokolov recorded .......2006-07-29

Grigory Sokolov is definitely one of the most underrated pianist for the past few decades, and I truly believe he is the best still around.

Currently there are two CD boxes( each contains 5 CDs)and one DVD (Live in Paris) available in the market. This is one of the CD set.

CD1: Beethoven Diabelli Variations;
CD2 & CD3: Schubert D894, D960;
CD4: Chopin Sonata No 2 and Etude op25 ;
CD5: Scriabin Sonata No 3&9,Prokofiev Sonata No 8 and Rachmaninov Prelude op23 No 4.

Because of his reclusive personality and unwilling to record (perhaps due to perfectionism) , he never had contract with major labels and therefore lots of people were not aware of him. However, the one single DVD is good enough to do him justice--you have to see it to believe it.

He is one of the best classic pianists ever, along with Gilels, Richter, etc----definitely the best still around. If you have notheard of Solokov, get both CD sets and DVD--that will be the best investment for your classic music collection and years of enjoyment. And if one of us get lucky, we might still be able to see him one stage one day.

Chausson's Poeme must be without any doubt one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever composed. And Enescu's interpretation of it is way ahead of its rivals in every department. For sheer emotions, virtuosity and sensitivity Enescu is in a class of his own. For me the Poeme alone on this CD is worth the money. Maybe I shouldn't have said that, since they are all gems performed in a sublime way that only legends such as Enescu and Flesch could have done so.

5 out of 5 stars About this CD.......2003-11-02

The works on this CD are uniformly excellent -

Here's some notes that serve to describe the contents of this CD -
"The Opus 111 Exploration of Chopin is an invitation to a musical journey which begins before his birth and stretches into our future. It paints a picture of the composer's inheritance, his achievement and his legacy and it tells the story of a sensitive genius. We start with Chopin's musical roots on the Polish plains and we end with his last performance in Paris. The world has not stopped playing Chopin since bears witness to the prophetic nature of Chopin's music. Opus 111's Voyage takes a modern look at the heritage of the past and creates a link between the old and the new."

The liner notes include "some great thinkers' reflections on Chopin - Georges Sand, Delacroix, Nietzsche, Heinrich Heine, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Andre Gide, Marcel Proust, Hermann Hesse"

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful performances of terrific music.......2004-02-22

There are some great performances here of well-known flute pieces like Honegger's Danse de la Chevre and Poulenc's Sonata for Flute and Piano, but the other tracks are also enjoyable. It is interesting to have all of the compositions of Les Six for flute solo and flute and piano on one CD.

We found the album enjoyable to listen to sequentially.

5 out of 5 stars A **real** female Welsh classical artist for our time :).......2001-06-14

This is a terrific CD for fans of French flute music, from the six composers dubbed "Les Six" in the 1920's. All of their individual chamber pieces for flute are featured, scored variously for flute and piano or for solo flute, in addition to a suite for solo piano where all six of them contributed movements and whose title is that of the CD. Emily Beynon is the young (30-something) Welsh-born principal flutist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, and plays excellently on this CD. Andrew West is a splendid accompanist, and shines in his own right in the solo piano suite. The production and notes are up to Hyperion's usual high standard. It is best to listen to this music in relatively small doses rather than all at once. Having said that, enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Needs a sixth star -- Phenomenal........2003-04-18

    Sokolov takes his place on the short list of great pianists of the century with this overwhelming (LIVE) performance of the Chopin Etudes Op. 25. Interpretations full of genius, (I rarely use that word) unexpected but breathtakingly compelling readings. Technique on the order of Richter swept up in the pursuit of the music. Just buy it.

    2 out of 5 stars The Interpretation of Dreams?.......2000-12-20

    Sokolov can boast of an extraordinary technique but his playing is affected and pornographic. When confronted with the absurd opening of the second sonata I shrieked with laughter, whilst the slower etudes were grotesquely self-indulgent and over erotic. Just tuck up with a few back copies of Playboy - also, ignore the abysmal program notes on the back of the cd, since they're almost as disastrous as the playing. Enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Chopin.......2000-12-17

    Sokolov's Chopin on CD runs to two disks -- the preludes and this disk. Both are essential acquisitions. This disk is based on live performances from 1985 in Russia and 1992 in Paris. The Sonata opens the disk. It is a performance of extraordinary intensity -- one of the most dramatic and heartbreaking ever recorded, from its stern opening to its ghostly ending. It nonetheless achieves its intensity without distorting the musical fabric as Kissin does in his recent recording of this work. The first and second movements are fiery, but this passion makes way for the poignant lyric theme in the first movement and the trio in the second. The funeral march is very broad and solemn, one of the longest on disk. It doesn't quite match the vehemence Fiorentino and Rachmaninov (the latter using Rubinstein's dynamics) brought to the work, but there is no other recording that comes close. The finale is, as I said, ghostly, modernistic and ambiguous. In short, a performance of surpassing excellence.

    The Etudes are in the same class. All too often one hears Etudes performed as exercises in virtuosity, played dramatically, but without the depth that induces one to return to them. This is very much the antidote for that sort of playing. Sokolov's performances sound completely original, the product of years of lavished attention. The "fun" pieces, like the G flat, come off with wit and elegance. Even in the most ferociously demanding pages, he emerges triumphant, and no. 12 brings the set to a triumphant close -- for once, not an anticlimax after the Winter Wind has blown out. Although it's a pity we don't have his op. 10, this disk is surely on the shortest of short lists of great Chopin playing. I also recommend the Fiorentino Newport recital, and Sofronitsky's Chopin disk in the GPE

    4 out of 5 stars Inessential but fun early Mozart.......2000-08-19

    The opening of this record sings with childlike joy. The playing is very precise, colorful, and engaging.

    What to expect: solo harpsichord music with violin accompaniment and sometimes more strings (though never more than about 5- this is chamber music). The three concertos are young Mozart's first in the genre (along with the Pasticci concertos 1-4), and are based on tunes by J.C. Bach. While the questions are rightly posed, "how much of this did Mozart write and how much of it was Leopold or other sources," the music stands for itself. While not neccesarily the work of a young genius sprung fully formed from Zeus' head, they are excellent examples of galant composition.

    The works on this record could just as easily be performed on a fortepiano, but as Mozart himself was mostly playing on harpsichords at this early age, Hantai's choice is a logical one. His performance is much more fun-loving than the "smouldering Euro-musician" photograph inside would suggest. These rarely recorded works form Mozart's early notebooks are a good find, and I would recommend them to anyone with a serious interest in Mozart or mid-18th century obscurities.

      The fourth of 10 volumes in Opus 111's Journey Around Chopin series ushers in the Polish master's Parisian salad days with a proverbial bang. Gregori Sokolov pounces upon the Op. 25 études, Funeral March Sonata, and Op. 28 préludes, illuminating their harmonic nooks and contrapuntal crannies like a scientist who can't wait to unveil the latest discovery. He milks the still-jarring left-hand dissonances in the A-minor prélude for all their worth, hot-foots his way through the tumultuous B-flat minor and D-minor préludes, and manages to create a specific character for each of the 12 études. Sokolov is one of those rare pianists for whom ideation and execution are one and the same. The presence of an audience only adds fuel to the pianist's individual fire. If you are ready to brave some of Chopin's darker creations without a safety net, let Sokolov be your guide. --Jed Distler

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars wow, unexpectedly terrific.......2000-02-04

      I've heard 4 recordings of the Etudes (Ashkenazy, Pollini, Lortie, Sokolov). I probably like this one the best, though it only contains Op 25. One downside of it is the sound quality: at points it sounds like the pitch goes bad or something. The performance is stunning, you're surprised to hear that it is a live recording! In my opinion, this is the most exciting of the etude recordings I've heard. Ashkenazy has beautiful tone, but I never "felt" his technique, Pollini has great fingers but sometimes the playing seems reserved, this recording combines what I consider the best of both of those recordings. I liked the performance of the Sonata a lot as well, however I have only heard 1 recording of it and do not have as much to compare it with.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Superb.......1999-11-20

      This two CD recording, replete with beautiful packaging and over two hours of gorgeous music, is arguably the best installment of the Opus 111 series of ten albums on Frederic Chopin. A comprehensive recording of Chopin's "Well-Tempered Clavier-esque" Etudes Op. 25 and Preludes Op. 28, as well as a beautiful recording of Chopin's "Marche Funebre" Sonata Op. 35, make this album a welcome, important addition to any classical music collection. The piano playing here is outstanding; as the Amazon review notes, Sokolov is a rare pianist who benefits from an acute feel for the music and comprehension of the composer's hypothecated intensions. Sokolov's playing -- in front of a live audience, no less -- is altogether brilliant here. In short, "France Vol. 4" is an essential set of recordings and a must-have. Get this album! You won't regret doing so.
