Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Flute artistry of the highest order! A treasure!.......2005-05-10

In terms of artistry, of phrasing and interpretation, Paige Brook has no equal among flutists past or present. The way he phrases and connects notes puts him head and shoulders above the likes of any of the so-called great flutists -- Rampal, Kincaid, Galway, Baker, Bennett -- and the host of younger pretenders to the throne (Pahud, Alexa Still, et al.) who currently dot the landscape.
The musical intelligence at work here is no less than astonishing.
This CD should be required listening for all aspiring flutists -- it is a virtual master class in phrasing and interpretation for the flute.
While other flutists play will-'o-the-wisp pretty for the sake of playing
pretty, or try to snow you with virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity,
Mr. Brook pays attention to the music itself, unafraid to attack and articulate when the music calls for it, to phrase and separate the notes with superb attention to nuance and detail. This is truly playing of the highest order.
If you love the flute, you must have this CD. It is a musical treasure.

Everything this man does is great, so putting many years together in one place could only be the same.

Of course this is a 5-star production, but I deducted a star only because any one who has been collecting Galway recordings already has all or most of the selections on this CD. As with other artists, BMG has been repackaging earlier Galway offerings under many names and excuses; is the simply the latest (though certainly not last) in the series. The music is the usual mixture of short pieces that can stand on their own and movements that cannot out of the context of the larger works from which they are lifted.

Overall good but one problem.......2006-05-24

You can tell the music is well performed and there is the sense of passion from the performers. No complaints in that aspect. The problem is these do not sound like CDs. They sound like tape re-recorded to CD. Those that remember the underlying static that was on almost all cassette tapes. That is on these CDs. And as you turn the music up to fully enjoy it the distrubance comes through even more. I have tried these on 3 different systems, and all have the same results.

Going to try to clean it up by converting to MP3 and back again. I know you lose some quality but it may make the overall enjoyment better.

Please don't get me wrong, the performance on these CD's is exceptional. And it is truley a shame that there is this issue. If you have a way to cancel noise then by all means this should be a good buy. If you play it softly then you will not notice noise on the recording. At the price I am not upset at this but I am a bit disappointed at it.

100 MASTER pieces..........2006-01-31

I am so impressed and moved by the music, the selection, the quality of the recordings. An incredible collection at an unbelievable price. I can not imagine a better overall set of this magnitude and quality. If you need Mozart, want to know Mozart, have never listened to Mozart, you need this set. Happy 250th!

I met Heidi in Ireland and purchased her CD. It is a well performed classical music CD. Good for relaxing and easy going. Flute and harp are a great couple . It is worth listening!

Excellent reading of the Bach.......1999-11-02

I bought this CD primarily for the historical value of hearing a 28 year old Ben Heppner do the short "Er kommt, er kommt!" tenor recitative in the Bach "Wachet auf" cantata. While still sounding like a lyric tenor, the latent power in his voice is very evident, even in this early recording. It's also a treat to get to hear the cantata in its orchestral arrangement, rather than just organ - and the chorus is the real star of the show here, not Mr. Heppner. They pull off the difficult runs in the opening movement seamlessly, and never sound anything less than terrific. The Handel concerto is also well-done, as is "The enchanted forest," but the excellent reading of the Bach is the real reason to own this disc.
