The epitome of French Saxophone.......2000-04-29
This is a very excellent recording of the standards in the French Repertoire. The pieces are executed flawlessly, with the usual French style of fast vibrato and certain ornamentations. Great recording for students and teachers trying to put together pieces for recitals, and Tableaux de Provence is often a standard for college auditions.
Savijoki and the pianists work well together, and this cd should be a standard in every classical saxophone collection.

In the liner notes of Gauthier's last album, his teacher (the master) Londeix says that Gauthier will be a master of his instrument (I'm paraphrasing). True to Londeix's prediction, this CD contains fire, tenderness, playfulness -- a whole smorgasbord of moods eloquently conveyed by the soloist Daniel Gauthier.
I am rather partial to the music written for saxophone in the time of its inventor Adolphe Sax, and was happy to see not one, but two, pieces on this CD that were written in that time period. The Savari and Demersseman are masterfully presented. In the fashion that Gauthier treats the Savari, you would think that the only music to which he listens is Weber operas. He plays the Demersseman brilliantly as a showpiece, the purpose for which it was undoubtably written.
The Piazzolla is performed with fire and flair, the Ibert with enough nuance to make it the most interesting saxophone performance of the work. The real jewel of this CD is the second commercial recording of Swerts "Klonos". Talk about a piece of music that gets right up in everyone's face and refuses to leave. And that's exactly how Gauthier treats it. I was assigned this piece some months ago, and I didn't really believe in it at that time (thought it was just another showpiece). Listening to this performance of the Swerts truly opened my eyes to the artistic potential of this work (the fire, the colors, the accessibility to non-musician audiences, the undeniable in-your-face quality that is not often found in the saxo repertoire).
Anyway, highly recommended disc. Daniel Gauthier is an artist.

Marvelous!.......2001-05-13
Bollinger's Fancy Free is indeed an exciting CD and I strongly urge bass trombonists out there to get it! He starts off the cd with the unaccompanied Spain by David Fetter. His flexibility and wonderful rich sound amazes me a lot! Another interesting work is Zwei Fantasie Stucke (2 Fantasy Pieces) written in the Romantic Period... sounds like a Brahms Lied for bass trombone. Tomasi's To Be or Not To Be is an all-time bass trombone delight and Tcherepnin's Andante (written for tuba if I'm not wrong) s a wonderful showcase of Bollinger's musicality. A sweet and simple melody in low range... its simply gorgeous! He ends wth Fancy Free, a typical Pryor kind of showy theme and variation. Bollinger made it harder by extending the range to make it sound real impressive! Yet despite all these, the lack of variety of styles hinder it to be 5 stars, but this CD is GOOD!!!

A great beginning quartet cd.......2001-05-15
This cd has a great and wonderful variety of quartets on it, and most importantly it has all the basic quartets in the saxophone quartet repertoire. Great for teachers to introduce quartets to college students or high school students. A fun cd to listen to as well.
100 Years of Saxophone Music.......2000-10-18
In celebrating the 100th anniversary of the saxophone, this CD brings together compositions by various composers featuring the saxophone. Not surprisingly, all of the composers were active in the 20th century, and some of them are still with us in the 21st.
Since the saxophone is more commonly used as a jazz instrument than it is as a symphonic one, its inclusion gives these performances a jazz quality that would not otherwise be present, and, as such, adds a certain modicum of excitement to this collection.

Very Enjoyable Program, Fine Performances.......2004-01-28
This is a delightful program of 20th century works for saxophone & piano (plus 3 brief pieces by Darius Milhaud for piano solo). It's substantial yet easy on the ear. There is a shrewd balance between dark (e.g. the Martin, originally for sax & orchestra) & light (Ibert); there are folk tunes (Bartok) & urban dance tunes (Milhaud). I'm no expert in this area, but the performances strike me as excellent; I leave it to others to critique it or compare it to other similar programs. I think children as well as adults might enjoy this CD.
