The poetry of Goethe has a unique place in German literature and German song--the sheer variety of his lyrics, from heaven-storming passion to calm acceptance, from tender love to vicious cynicism, made his words the source-material of many composers' finest settings. Christoph Prégardien and Michael Gees have put together an intelligent program that combines some of the best-known composers of the German song--Schubert, Wolf, Schumann, Beethoven--with lesser masters--Loewe, Schoeck; we get both Schubert's and Loewe's setting of the achingly nostalgic "Wanderer's Nightsong," and Loewe's jaunty setting of "Der Erlkonig," perhaps Schubert's best-known song, but by no means his exclusive property. Two songs of Gees's own are intelligent modern pastiches of the romantic style, solidly accomplished word-settings with interesting piano writing. All the songs here are admirably selected for Prégardien's darkly sorrowful pure voice and Gees's tactful, occasionally intense, accompaniment. --Roz Kaveney

      5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful recital!.......2000-02-17

After listening this CD we will finally know why Goethe is an great poet. Too much possibility contained in his poems, as this CD shows us. This unusual recital consists of 27 lieder from 11 composers, spanned from old Beethovan, Wolf to modern Diepenbrock, Shoeck, Gees. Thank God it contains very few over-sung Schubert-Goethe cliche. Pregardien selected and arrange these lieder wisely and carefully, and he deliberately changes style from one song to another. With his gold, clean voice and deep, intense interpretion, they reflected the wild and wide soul a great poet can be. Gees's accompaniment is as well.

5 out of 5 stars ENOUGH FOR NOW.......2005-06-24

Loewe was a contemporary of Schubert, and his output of songs and ballads seems to have been on a similarly large scale. He even set Goethe's Erlkoenig, and at one time there was a fashion to prefer his version to Schubert's masterpiece. This prompted a typically supercilious defence of Schubert from Tovey, always one to praise famous men, but I have heard Loewe's setting and I have no difficulty with Tovey's point of view in general.

Erlkoenig is not included in this recital of 17 numbers by a variety of authors. Most are ballads, a type of poetry for which I have had a lifelong weakness. The themes of love and death figure prominently, and I imagine it would be hard to put together any representative selection of ballads in any language where that was not so. Others are various kinds of lyrics, including translations of Byron and a German setting of three verses from St John's gospel. The choice of religious texts is admirably ecumenical, one poem relating to a miracle associated with the Blessed Virgin, another to a miraculous escape by the Prophet and a companion from their pursuers, and I suppose that the sentiment in the ninth item, (one of the Byron translations), could be fairly described as Zionist. I find the selection to be judicious and as well varied as the material permits, my own partiality being strongly for the touching and affecting ballads. The music is simple and attractive throughout. The liner-note (anonymous but pretty obviously a translation from German) is slightly hectoring in the way it tells us what to think, and while I quite agree that Loewe does not deserve neglect I don't perceive him as any serious rival to Schubert either.

I think you would be very surprised if I had much criticism to make of Fischer-Dieskau, and indeed I have none at all. The beautiful voice, the meticulous artistry and the sense of belief and commitment are here as surely as in his renderings of Schubert or Wolf. Hartmut Hoell is a fairly unremarkable accompanist, but this is not music that cries out for Gerald Moore, and I have no problems in that quarter either. The recording does everyone justice, and I recommend this disc warmly to music lovers interested in this attractive byway of German Lied who may balk slightly at becoming involved with it in a more wholesale way.

Deutsche Grammophon is lucky in that World War II didn't slow classical recordings in Germany as it did in the United States but stimulated them: It was essential for wartime morale. Thus, if you can get past any repugnance related to these recordings' genesis, there's a huge amount to enjoy. There's a disc of lieder by all the prewar greats (Franz Volker, Tiana Lemnitz, Erna Berger, and Heinrich Schlusnus), a disc of Wagner featuring young Hans Hotter, opera and operetta performances by Berger and Helge Roswaenge, and a disc showing how the German singers gave Italian opera a distinctively Nordic but highly communicative edge. The set is crowned by a complete Winterreise that was recorded by Peter Anders in 1945 (and sounds it): the cultivated tenor's anguished performance embodies a Germany facing the abyss. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars BEST LIVE LIEDER CONCERT RECORDING EVER!.......2004-02-23

This is by far the greatest live lieder concert available on record. This is also superior to any live concert I have ever heard. Hans Hotter allied one of the biggest voices in history and one of the best vocal techniques with the deepest emotional and musical investment and clarity. Given all this, no singer is above Hotter. He was the consummate singer. Vocally this recording is very exciting. The warmth and clarity of the recording and Hotter's vocal health come together creating a beautiful experience. The sound is as close to live as I have ever heard a 60's recording, and it is the best representation of Hotter's timbre. In this recording Hotter was not suffering from the breathing ailment that so spots the majority of his later recordings with wooliness and diffusion. It is not the same infinite ring that the earliest recordings make so clear, but the voice is rarely puffy. It is almost always a warm, rolling sound. This is the best blend of beautiful singing and rounded declamation I have ever heard.
The vocalism is outstanding, but the depth of interpretation and musicality of the music is divine. Hans Hotter performs with complete devotion to text and composer. This approach along with his vocal ability and stability make for nearly perfect presentation of the composer's and poet's intentions. His decisions within the pieces are tempered by his almost singular knowledge of performance history and textual meaning, and Hotter was blessed with considerable direct contact with Strauss and as such must be seen as an authority.
This concert is demanding (on par with the famous live Bjorling Carnegie Hall recording for difficulty), but Hotter's performance is so easily delivered that the listener is rarely aware of the difficulty. This is a key to any great performance. Hotter weaves the music and the word into an organic whole which does not jar the listener from his suspended disbelief. Vocal frailty, lack of musicality, and disconnection from the text are the main factors which break the listener away from the experience. Hans Hotter's performance has no such weaknesses. Hans Hotter excels in every way. He keeps the listener with him at all times. His voice is full of intelligence and pathos. There is no live concert like this on record. BUY THIS CD NOW!
