Profile of passion.......2000-02-20
I have not yet been in the right place at the right time to see this film but I have followed Nadja's career since she won the Naumberg competition. This is a beautiful and lovingly compiled profile of her life in music, as selected from her recording history to date (not included is the astonishing recent album of gypsy music with the Assad Brothers). I knew that the creators of this soundtrack had a spiritual affinity with their subject when I saw the Souvenir de Florence second movement selection, the Sibelius second movement, the Shostakovich Burlesque and the Rachmaninov vocalise - pieces that capture the Nadja that has always captured me. Indeed, for us long-time fans, and for anyone, this is a wonderful souvenir album of one of the most soul-possessing fiddlers of our time.
Nadja - breakthrough artist.......1999-12-30
The picture on this album cover is horrible... gotta say this up front.
Now, if I could only give a one sentence appraisal of both this CD and the documentary, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is the one person, the one superior artist who is also a "real" person (well, who let us see that), who could possibly reach out and grab the non-classical music enthusiast and make them thirst for classical music, because they will want more of her music.
And, if there were no other reason, I love the album, but then it and the film it stems from are so rich on so many other facets. The music itself is perfect beyond reproach.
For those of us who were never completely classically inclined, like myself, we are presented with a whole person here. Nadja is not stiff and unreachable, but rather, someone who is so very much an "average joe" who loves her family and treasures her friends, perhaps with an extremely heightened awareness that we would all kill for but might kill us if we ever got there without a likewise outlet as she has with her music, but also with a "who you lookin' at" New York accent.
I'd like to see Paola Di Florio's documentary of Nadja, "Speaking in Strings" as required viewing, world-wide. I think then that classical music would have a whole new audience. Not a doubt in my mind.
Until I saw "Speaking in Strings", I thought all classical soloists were people with sticks up their behinds who talked down their noses at everyone else. Shows you what I know.
Her music reduces me to tears, in a way I never thought possible (there's an old phrase that goes -- "This guy not only knows nothing, he don't even suspect nothing").. and that was really honestly me and classical music.
I can't even watch TV now without hearing the violin in the music of shows or commercials and then instantly switching to the stereo to this or another of her albums to hear Nadja, to hear the really good stuff. I want to feel it now, and no longer being fed junk or be a passive observer.
Just my opinion, but we've shortchanged ourselves in what "feeds" us. I never knew it was missing, until I saw this documentary, which led me to buy the album, which now, happily takes me from smiles to tears throughout. So that now I am listening to it all. A whole new world has been opened up to me.
So, I give this album as many stars as there are in the heavens. I've gotten a great gift, and if I go any farther, I'll ruin it with words.
Thank you Paola and Nadja for taking the time, the caring, and to Nadja especially for letting us so deeply into her life to make sure we "got it."
Nadja, I "got it", and I now totally believe that line in the film where you say that great moments we all have are fleeting and they are only good if you "share it." You sure have shared it. Thanks.
Bravo Nadja!.......1999-10-23
Saw the film...now have the album...love both. She's an inspiration to all of us who live in the fast lane...both emotionally and professionally... Allegro Vivace Con Mucho Brio!
PS: Per the previous reviewers comment, in the days of Mozart/Beethoven, etc., it was quite customary to perform sections of long-form works independently when playing concerts...which just confirms by example that there's nothing "wrong" or low-brow about doing it now, either in concert or on a recording.
Bits and pieces winningly played.......1999-10-07
The EMI release of
(72435 56908-2) is subtitled "A Musical Companion to the Film." So I assume the music herein is not from the film but a sampling that represents, as the soloist is quoted as saying, "the variety and growth of my musical life so far." The writer is Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and the film is to be about her life as an artist. But none of that need concern us here. As a rule I object to movements being played out of the context of the work from which they come--e.g., the Adagio movement of the Sibelius Violin Concerto--but in this case the opening selection, Saint-Saens "The Swan," was so winningly played that I found myself liking this program very much indeed. Other composers represented here are listed above in this website. The artist is given more than adequate assistance from several pianists, chamber players, and the London Symphony Orchestra, making me suspect the selections are drawn from earlier recordings. Nevertheless, for those who like violin music in general and do not care if you hear an entire composition or just part of one, or for those who simply admire this artist, I can recommend this CD.

best version of lyric suite.......2007-07-07
Even though it took a month to get it was worth the wait. I mainly bought for the string quartet because I already own the Kronos Quartet version of he lyric suite which I thought could not be beat but the New Zealand String Quartet really pefomed the earlier quartet and the suite with such commitment and compassion that I had tears in my eyes during both pieces.
Though using atonal techniques Berg was the most Romantic of the three Vienese THiswas brought out in the lyric suite which was inspired by a love affair.
As always Naxos notes are superb. i hope they release more with New Zealand

A nice collection.......2003-11-19
I've always had an attraction to classical music, however, I've always been so overwelmed by the vast variety of classical music out there, I've really never known where to start. I decided to finally purchase a CD of various pieces to start with, and started previewing albums on top of albums. After finally coming across this CD, I have to say it does have a nice collection (of what I could hear). Not too harsh, not too drowsy. I gave this CD 4 out of 5 stars because it doesn't feature as many of the true classic composers as I wanted, but I would recommend this CD for anyone who wants to buy a first Classical Cd.
GREAT CD REISSUE of a timeless VaughanWilliams's classic !.......1999-11-04
At last Hyperion records (U.K.) have released a cd reissue on their current Helios sublabel of the Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs and Tudor Portraits. Wetton (a surprisingly competent conductor for these days) and his huge orchestra are backed by wonderful choral parts (glimpses of what Heaven could be?); the soloist vocal parts are superb, thanks to Sarah Walker and Henry Herford's - two of England's greatest voices. The recording is quite good (don't expect the best from Telarc or Mercury, but it ain't bad either, especially in the way dynamics of the percussion and massive vocals are right there - rightly!). Certainly, a Vaughan Williams disc that is worth investigating. To me, these works represent sort of an 'overview' of the whole V.W.s' works. A plus, the Helios Series from Hyperion are amazingly inexpensive - considering the actual cost of a majority of CDs. Other great recordings of these works include the reference version by Sir David Willcocks, yet this one isn't far behind. We aren't far from Heaven, too.

Rare Wolf and Dohnanyi, fine Schubert especially in the first two movements.......2006-09-07
For this issue of their treasurable, complete Hollywood Quartet series, Testament has chosen a not entirely coherent coupling, which Tully Potter's notes likens to the program a typical Central European string quartet might have played in the late 1920s or 1930s. Be it as it may, Hugo Wolf's charming if harmonically rich Italian Serenade (recorded in 1953) and Dohnanyi's 3rd quartet from 1955, with its Mitteleuropean alternation of arch-bent, post-brahmsian lyricism and quasi-hindemithian or early-bartokian vigor conjuring memories of quartets by Zemlinsky, Enesco and Walton, make a weighty bonus for the Hollywood Quartet's 1955 recording of Schubert's "Death and the Maiden".
The quasi-mythical status achieved by the Hollywood Quartet appears to be amply justified at least by the first two movements of Schubert's Quartet. The Allegro starts with a sense of ominous expectation, like danger lurking - then follows with a raging development, not so much rushed as rhythmically biting. The 2nd, lyrical theme (1:56) is underlined by a relaxation of phrasing but no significant slow down of tempo, and the Hollywood Quartet are experts at sustaining tension by always maintaining the forward-momentum.
In the 2nd movement - the famous "Death & the Maiden" theme and variations - they adopt a restrained tempo, not quite the "Andante con moto" indicated by Schubert but not either the funeral march conjured by the slower still tempo favored by others (Wiener Konzerthaus Quartet, Fine Arts Quartet on Boston Skyline, Juilliard or Brodsky Quartets for later recordings). Here, it is rather evocative of the Maiden's meditation on Death - a nice effect. The variations unfold with fine, differentiated characterization, lyrical rather than dramatic in the first two, raging in the third (thanks to a brisk acceleration of tempo), charming without mawkishness in the fourth, dramatic at last - and always with crystal-clear intonation from 1st violin Felix Slatkin. But alas the Hollywoods do not take the repeats of the second part of each variation.
The two remaining movements are not on an equal plane. In the scherzo, despite Schubert's "Allegro molto", the Hollywoods privilege weight over fury (for the latter, go to the Amadeus Quartet's first recording from 1953, now in a DG box), and they advocate a view of the finale, taken at an unhurried pace with a fine build-up from hushed pianissimo to fortissimo, in which charm (borne by the first violin) sometimes prevails over drama (2:12); and in which, in order to give weight to the "con forza" marking of Schubert, they apply a relaxation of tempo which slightly bogs down the movement (1:07).
Still, despite these minor reservations, this was one of the better versions to be had in the mono era and remains an invaluable historical document, in excellent sound.

The programming is ingenious (as long as you have the bass player around for the Schubert, why not do the Mozart?), but the performances don't quite make it. This is certainly an acceptable "Trout" Quintet, with high spirits and good coordination. Haefliger is a thoroughly convincing Schubert player. But some of the dynamics in the strings sound precious and affected, and there is some surprisingly out-of-tune violin playing in the variations movement. The Wolf is delightful, the best performance on the disc. Some listeners might love this style of Mozart playing, but it sounds as though the players are often teasing the music, with excessively nuanced dynamics that call attention to themselves. Fine playing, but it won't be to everyone's taste. --Leslie Gerber

AT LENGTH.......2005-09-22
The performing artists on this disc are the Auryn Quartet. They have apparently been around for nearly 25 years without my managing to become aware of them, but I sense that their anonymity here is probably not of their own volition. Its members studied in Germany and in America, with the Amadeus and Guarneri Quartets respectively, and they have devoted this disc to the complete output of Hugo Wolf for string quartet.
Obviously even minor works by so great a composer as Wolf are of scholarly interest at the very least. Like his fellow-Wagnerite Bruckner he produced only one complete major composition for a chamber group, and in common with several other leading composers of roughly the same period - Verdi, Franck, Sibelius, Elgar - he turned out a single string quartet. Wolf's essay seems to me worthy and genuinely interesting, but not of the significance of any of these. Its basic trouble is that it is too big for its boots - it is simply far too long. The liner-note goes into the history of its composition, and it is quite clear that the piece gave its composer a great deal of trouble, attended with lengthy periods of indecision. Very helpfully and properly the note draws heavily on the views of Reger, which seem to me perceptive and candid. Reger is predictably thorough in his analysis, and just as predictably earnest and charmless, but his observations strike me as being very fair and balanced. This is not to say that I go along with everything he says - for instance who is Reger of all composers to criticise melodies by any other composer whomsoever? Reger's strictures in this respect are applied to the E flat intermezzo, which struck me for one as being rather attractive and easier to listen to than the big full-scale quartet itself. Another feature that occurred to me is that the actual writing for the quartet medium improves as the disc goes along. In the quartet the effect in the first movement is slightly shrill, and I really believe that this is the composer's own doing rather than some shortcoming in either performance or recording. The later movements seem an improvement in this respect, the intermezzo better still, and the Italian Serenade best of all, and I note that Reger was firmly of the opinion that the quartet version is an arrangement of an orchestral original and not the other way about.
The Auryn Quartet deserve better than to have their identities concealed, and their accounts of all three works strike me as admirable. This is not the jolliest performance of the Italian Serenade that I ever heard, but Wolf was a slightly forbidding gentleman at the best of times, and I like a touch of inwardness and withdrawal even here. No performance of this quartet is going to turn it into a crowd-pleaser, and I'm prepared to say, hearing the work now for the second time in a couple of weeks but not for 30 years prior to that, that this is really a very good account of it - honest, committed, idiomatic and straightforward, giving the piece its due without trying to `sell' it to us. The recording dates from 1998. It is perfectly good by the exacting standards that we're entitled to apply to a production from so recent a date, and although it strikes me as being less than absolutely outstanding that's the way the music strikes me too.

Rossini: Complete String Sonatas.......2006-03-10
I had this on a album years ago. One of my favorite relaxation items and was sad to lose it. Found it again on Amazon with the same string quartet. Love it!! Service was very good also!

Album Description
Arguably, the greatest lieder composer who ever lived, Hugo Wolf was indisputably his own worst enemy. Alienating fellow composers and potential performers did little to advance his career and even his own father was forced to write You have already adopted all Beethoven's waywardness and bad habits
! The resemblance with the Titan is more than circumstantial in Wolf's early String Quartet in d minor. Drawing heavily upon Beethoven's F minor Quartet, op. 95 for its inspiration, Wolf's Quartet is a restless tour de force, gorgeously scored for the ensemble. Standing at the work's center is a sublime slow movement that sounds as if Schubert had composed Tristan und Isolde. The program concludes with Wolf's lighter-than-air Italian Serenade, handsomely performed by the energetic Fine Arts Quartet

Why isn't Wolf more popular?.......2005-06-10
I don't care what his daddy said, or who influenced him - this CD by the 10 star Fine Arts Quartet is a tour de force - and the reviewer is absolutely right-on with his "Schubert/Tristan and Isolde" comment.
There are so many delicate nuances and innuendoes in each piece that giving a professional opinion is ridiculous. I believe Wolf does the same thing as Schubert and Mahler: pushes us beyond where we're willing to go - beyond the comfort zone into something dangerous to the preconceptions of our ear...those long, relentlessly beautiful passages with a kind of mesmerizing stillness. This is more than what we've been taught to expect from chamber music, and the Fine Arts Quartet is absolutely into it with extraordinary skill and a grand capacity to put us into the heart of this gifted and troubled composer.
