Editorial Reviews Includes four Yiddish/Holocaust song adaptations, including noted works by Lazar Weiner, Zalmen Mlotek, and a dynamic solo piano work based on Oyfn Pripitchik. There is also a work by Morton Gould, which was written for the NBC Television mini-series, Holocaust. At once passionate, profound and moving, this CD is a unique and valuable addition to the repertoire which is receiving national attention for its fresh approach to classical Jewish music. Pianist Laura Leon-Cohen is recognized for... This collection brings together ethnic, classical, liturgical, and American popular styles, blending them into a rich musical tapestry. The music ranges from Renaissance composer Salamone Rossi's Benediction to Kurt Weill's distinctly bluesy Kiddush to Billy Joel's Lullabye-the lullaby song being, perhaps the most moving musical expression of any culture. Each work has been adapted from a song or choral work, yet remains true to the original composition. A flute choir takes the place of the voices in the choral works, with the piano in the keyboard or organ role. The flute "sings" the vocal line, with piano, in the songs. . . . Blessings of Beauty radiates Jewish warmth and the timeless beauty of all music.
From the Artist
Blessings of Beauty is the first CD of its kind, having taken songs and choral works by noted Jewish composers and adapted them in an instrumental venue. Very few artists have taken these well-respected and beloved works by important composers-many of them distinguished American composers-and transformed them into passionate instrumental compositions, using flute/flute choir in place of orchestra.
