Five stars, one star, has anyone actually heard this recording? The first reviewer makes it pretty clear he's reviewing the search engine; the second reviewer is reviewing NOTHING.

I haven't heard this recording; I just wanted to give to something to boost its rating because obviously the other reviewer was writing a review of amazon's search engine and not this recording. I really don't know what rating it deserves, but seeing a recording w/ Wunderlich on it that gets one star just seems wrong.

Oddly enough, Amazon's search engine brought me here when I was searching for "Blue Man Group"....unfortunately, the closest we get is the Blue Danube. Wonderful though it might be, it's NOT Blue Man Group.

Let me reiterate, there is NO Blue Man Group at all on this CD. Not even one track. None. Niente. Nada.

Heck, they aren't even Austrian. Or Australian, for that matter.

For those interested in Hummel, a Mozart pupil and fascinating classical- Romantic transition figure, this disc is a tempting proposition, with three major works played on period instruments. But there are some problems. Ralph Holmes plays his Stradivarius well but doesn't always have the best intonation. The Op. 5 Sonata is not prime Hummel; it's rather derivative and nowhere near as attractive as the later works. If you don't mind Hummel's alternative of flute for violin, Paula Robison gives a more compelling performance of Op. 50 (Vanguard Classics OVC 8099). I have this disc, but then I'm a Hummel freak. --Leslie Gerber

Sensational Recording of Sensational Music!.......2004-06-04

In this recording are married the best of music with the best of interpretations... and shall I add the best of instruments?

Johann Nepomuk Hummel's exquisit violin sonatas are brought to life here with the exceptional interpretation of Mr. Holmes and Mr. Bernnett, and it is a delightful pleasure to hear this music from the bowls of a living Stradivari and a soulful Graff piano. You have never heard Hummel's music like this before. This is not a violin, it is a wild beast! The music of Hummel comes to life in this extremely sensitive and witty interpretation, where neither players (nor their instruments) were shy of being consequent. It is a rare pleasure for the ears and the soul, and a tickling thrill for the brain cells to listen to these sonatas.

I love them. It is my one most favorite CD in the whole world. Hummel has a hot temper, but is also a very happy sweet man. You hear this in his music. Sophisticated innocence, was how a music critic once described him. I would add a dash of hot pepper. If you hear his music, you will be happy for the rest of your life. And if you hear this interpretation, you have heard on the of best possible interpretations to be found.

As John Field once said: " You are either the devil, or you are Hummel!" He is the most lovable devil in the world.
