Editorial Reviews
Mike Silverton, Fanfare
"As performer, [Buckner] applies a light, expressive, remarkably unpretentious voice to good and novel ends."
Robert Carl, Fanfare
"...[Buckner's] intonation is sure, his diction wonderful, and he sings with a drgree of commitment that most other singers should envy. Not only was every piece on this collection written for him; he creates the illusion that he himself composed them, so forthright and sensitive is his delivery."

Amazon.com essential recording
It begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, when it was released, some of the music in oh-so-'80s synths sounds a bit dated. Yet this two-CD set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, "If I Was Your Girlfriend," and the thunderous "The Cross," Prince proves why the hype was justified. --Amy Linden

Master Piece.......2007-07-16
There are very few words that can describe the awesome musical prowess of Sign O' the Times.
The album is politically, musically, and socially interesting. Prince parties it up, politics it up, and then parties some more on this album.
This is without a doubt one of his top 3 albums of his career of-course with Purple Rain leading the way.
This album is just not for the fans, but for a generation of R&B and Funk lovers who treasure great music!
Sign O' the Times... simply a masterpiece for the ages!
Underappreciated genre-defying album.......2007-06-25
even with the recognition he has received, prince is one of the underacknowledged geniuses of rock 'n roll. as prolific as dylan or neil young, prince seemingly shifts genres and styles effortlessly, always creating interesting music, almost without peer in the current pop music scene. from sly stone to little richard to p-funk to joni mitchell, prince has assimilated and made his own a ridiculous range of styles and sounds.
this album is my favorite. it spans everything from gorgeous ballads [adore, slow love] to topical commentary [title track] to all-out funk [housequake] to pure pop [starfish and coffee]. prince is a brilliant vocalist and performer as well, ripping out santana-like solos and easily adopting a variety of vocal styles.
Prince of Princes.......2007-04-02
This is just as god as all of the other Prince works. It's a must buy.
prince.......2007-03-16
signs of time is a good cd. i wish that they put together a cd with his greatest slow songs on there. like Adore,International Lover, Purple Rain,Diamonds and Pearls. like a collection of all the songs over the course of time. if any one where i can get this let me know
It's not the White Album by the beatles but it's still great.......2007-02-08
There are a lot of reviews out there that raise this album to almost unapproachable levels. Bottom line: this is a solid - one of the most solid - offerings from Prince. Lot's of pop, rock, and funk songs.
I still say 1999 and Purple Rain stand out as the best of Prince but Sign 'O' the Times should still be in your collection.
One huge negative has to be mentioned!!! This cd needs to be remastered. The sound is awful. I finally burned it into ITunes and changed the equalizer settings to get a half way decent sound but remastering would be a great idea.

Album Description
This disc pairs two of Pass' World Pacific albums, Simplicity, from 1967, which gives us the post-bebop Joe swinging elegantly and improvising eloquently with a small group of first-rate sidemen and an urbane and sophisticated feel, and 66's A Sign of the Times, on which Joe, accompanied by Chet Baker, graces the hit tunes of the 60's with his jazz chops. Sundazed 2002 release.

LISTEN TO IT THROUGH AMAZON AND MAKE UP YOUR MIND...JAZZ WAS MOVING ON TO THE 60'S AND WORLD PACIFIC MADE ALOT OF WHAT YOU CALL 'LOUNGE' MUSIC.I FIND THIS CD RELAXING... AFTER A HARD GRIND AT WORK,SLIP OFF THOSE SHOES AND RELAX IN YOUR FAVOURITE CHAIR WITH A GLASS OF SCOTCH...HAH A DELIGHT,CALL ME SAD OR CRAZY,I DON'T MIND.
Just lie back, this won't hurt a bit..........2003-01-17
The playing is, as always, wonderful. But the selection of tunes, and their saccharine arrangements, is almost comically sixties, from the breathy female choruses chanting "Sign of the Times" to the fiercely frugging blonde go-go dancers on the inside cover. A bit too much like what you might hear in your dentist's office fifteen years ago.

Customer Reviews:
A few fine songs by singer who still sounds good at age 68.......2002-11-20
Buy this CD if you want to collect all of Petula Clark's recordings. Otherwise it would be wiser to invest your money in any of her nine French Anthologie CD's for some of the most beautiful music of the twentieth century.
The standards sung by Petula (Downtown, Don't Give Up, and A Sign Of The Times) were jazzed up and very dramatic which took away from the elegance of the original 60's versions. She is now a much more dramatic performer, but in the 50's, 60's, and 70's, it was her unique ability to combine simplicity, elegance, and crystal clear vocals which made her one of the greatest female vocalists. Pet sounds much different than she used to as her vocals are now much heavier, dramatic, and serious, but she still sounds good; great for a 68 year old singer. However, most of her interpretations on this album are over done and of uneven quality.
I'm not afraid is a good song. I Need To Be In Love and With One Look are excellent tracks, and Pet's version of I Dreamed A Dream is beautiful.
A DISAPPOINTING CONDENSATION OF A DISAPPOINTING CONCERT.......2002-01-27
As another reviewer of this CD stated, I've been a die-hard fan of Petula Clark since I first heard the opening notes of "Downtown" in late 1964 - but I'm also one to listen to her latest output with an open mind, and be honest in my criticism of it. Any flaws I felt this "live" recording had on first hearing have only been magnified by my recent attendance at a concert Clark performed in Long Beach, looking and sounding very much like she did in the early 70s. "A Sign of the Times", alas, is a far cry from Clark at her best, and is an odd representation of her PBS special in that it includes songs not heard in it and versions of others different from those heard in the program, a sort of cut-and-paste of two concerts filmed on the closing nights of the Virginia Arts Festival last spring. Given what material was excluded from this Varese Sarabande release, one wonders why those credited with "preparing" the album for release selected such lackluster tunes as "The Wedding Song," "Celebrate," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "Vivre" to remain. Too often, Clark's voice is stretched thin by an effort to reach a note or sustain it in her inimitable way, and while these problems are not as noticeable in the broadcast version of the concert, they seem emphasized here by their frequency. How unfortunate that Clark's January 11, 2002 concert in Long Beach wasn't the one captured on film - greatly trimmed down, her mass of unruly curls replaced by the straight hairstyle she wore in the early to mid-70s, her voice was strong and confident and crystal-clear as she ran through her string of mid-60s hits intermingled with material from her film and stage work. Petula Clark definitely still has "it" - it's just not evident on this disappointing CD.
A stunning live performance; she's still got it!.......2001-12-21
I drove 200 miles from home to attend this concert in Norfolk, Virginia on May 20, 2001, and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. At 69 years young, Petula Clark still has one of the best voices I have ever heard. The concert was a delightful cornucopia of her classic 1960s hits, recent songs, and Broadway standards.
Like any great singer, she knows how to convey the feelings of a particular song; she alternates between easygoing and serious whenever the song demands it. In concert, she is one of those performers (all too few today) who can generate a true feeling of warmth towards her audience, and we, the audience, love her for it.
While nothing can compare with my memory of the live performance, this CD is a joy.
GREAT NEW LIVE CONCERT BY BRITAIN'S NUMBER ONE FEMALE SINGER.......2001-12-15
Recorded in June 2001 at the Virginia Arts Festival in Norfolk, USA, Pet's new album finds her in excellent voice on a career overview, underlined with humour, and a varied collection of songs which reach a peak with I'M NOT AFRAID, destined with its mix of reflective and powerful lyrics to become her own personal anthem in the way MY WAY or THIS IS MY LIFE allude to Sinatra and Bassey.
Included is LES MISERABLES hit, I DREAMED A DREAM, and WITH ONE LOOK, referring to her own celebrated SUNSET BOULEVARD starring role. CELEBRATE is a catchy new song for Pet and, of course, the old favourites, DOWNTOWN (with some audience participation), DON'T GIVE UP and I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE, plus the lesser hit THE WEDDING SONG,are well-sung and applauded. I cared less for her duet of AT LAST with Lou Rawls, but I NEED TO BE IN LOVE with Richard Carpenter is an appropriate tribute to her friend, the late Karen. The self-penned, touching and well-regarded, HERE FOR YOU is appropriately followed by her piano-accompanied LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING before the French sung VIVRE, from NOTRE DAME DE PARIS reaches a strong climax and closes the concert which had a PBS(USA) broadcast and will eventually reach DVD and video release. This is Petula at her very best and will be enjoyed by all.
Disappointed in the album.......2001-12-08
First off - I need to say I adore this woman. I've been collecting her recordings for nearly 40 years. I've seen her "live" (Waldorf Astoria-NYC; "Sunset Blvd."-Baltimore, MD). I find this woman vocally amazing.
My "review" of this CD is in no way a "slam" on Ms. Clark - nor is it a "slam" on her ability to still put over a song.
I am, however, disappointed in this recording.
"Live" recordings can almost always be counted on as being "cruel" - even to those who are in their 20's(!) - and I find this "live" recording especially cruel to Ms. Clark.
Don't get me wrong - I can still hear the youth in her voice (and that alone - at age 69 - is quite a feat!), but (with the exception of "Vivre" - which is truly a stunning performance) these moments come & go within each song... I was surprised to hear her pitch start to fall in a few places, for instance... I was surprised to hear her voice sounding as tight as it did in "Sign of the Times"...
I kept thinking: Why didn't she do another studio recording - where you can walk out of the studio with definitive performances, you know?
Unlike Judy Garland (who actually became greater in "live" performance), Petula (for me, anyway) is a RECORDING artist - someone who totally understands the medium, and has continually been able to crank out BEAUTIFUL recordings, one after the other, for decades. She is amazing - nothing short of amazing - when it comes to studio work.
This "live" performance may have been terrific "in person" - but as a CD? It's worth getting for the recording of "Vivre" - but I don't think this is a collection to win over any new fans for her.
I'd rather play "HERE FOR YOU" - a far, superior STUDIO recording, with Petula in exquisite form.

Japan's very own guitar hero/singer Kelly Simonz is heavily influenced by Yngwie Malmsteen but his songwriting is much more melodic and varied. The album contains everything from piano ballads, acoustic guitars, melodic hard rock to full blast shred and even a live version of 'Blind Faith'. 2002.

Almost one of his best.......2006-07-10
After the music phenomenons that were Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall" and "Thriller", as well as the mega-success of George Benson's "Give Me The Night", Quincy Jones's "The Dude" and a number of others, more or less everyone was clamouring to get on board the songs-written-by-Rod Temperton bandwagon. This is where Bob James first had his turn and so the title of the album is cheekily ironic.
The three Temperton contributions, "Hypnotique", "The Steamin' Feelin'" and the title track are predictable enough (especially to anyone familiar with his arrangements) but enjoyable as always nonetheless. There are those who argue that these are not jazz songs per se, but funky instumentals. Personally, I feel he treads the thin line between accessible jazz and bland supermarket background music, with aplomb. It's a close thing though.
Lurking behind these potential pop tunes (I do believe "Sing of the Times actually made it into the pop charts) lie the real treasures of this CD though. The self-penned "Enchanted Forest" and "Unicorn" are typical Bob James, deep and emotional with the ivories tinking and heartfelt. Jay Beckenstein of Spyro Gyra lends beautiful sax solos. The album ends with "Love Power" with a sublime sax solo from Grover Washington, Jr. Vocal support comes from the best session singers of the day, including Patti Austin and Luther Vandross.
This is a must for any Bob James fan and also for anyone looking for an easygoing introduction to jazz fusion. I have all of Bob James's CDs and while this is by no means his best, it is almost.
Absolutely my fovorite Bob James cd........2006-01-04
Totally and completey love this cd ...absolutely superb music period.
Musical Magic Again!.......2002-10-07
For his ninth contemporary jazz release, Bob James brings in the multitalented Rod Temperton, and an all-star vocal cast including Patti Austin, Lani Groves, Major Holley, Luther Vandross, and many others for what only can be described as pure musical magic. The macabre "Hypnotique" with its unintelligible vocals is the ultimate "daytime nightmare". The tempo picks up on the funky "The Steamin' Feeling". We are transported to magical lands with the dreamy "Enchanted Forest". Spyro Gyra frontman Jay Beckenstein shows his stuff on "Unicorn". Bob shows amazing dexterity on both the acoustic piano and Oberheim polyphonic synth. The title song features the vocal cast, as well as some interesting sound effects by Tabby Andriello. Major Holley's vocal solo is doubled by a bowed acoustic bass. "Love Power" (a Bob James original), again features the vocal ensemble plus guitarist Steve Khan, and a sultry solo by Grover Washington, Jr. Missing from this reissue is the original back cover from the vinyl LP, as well as the musician credits. Also this was NOT released in 1979, but in 1981.
A great album.......2002-02-03
The song Enchanted Forest didn't catch my attention for a while. I sometimes skipped it. The funky title song was the kind of thing I was looking for. But now Enchanted Forest is a song that I find mezmorizing.
Fabulous.......2001-09-25
I had this album as a kid, then forgot about it for about 20 years and i just got it again. it's amazing. if you like his 70s stuff, like "three" you'll love this.
