This, the first of Leonard Bernstein's two recordings of this symphony, is vastly superior to his remake on DG. It's a vital, impulsive performance, with a daringly fast tempo in the Scherzo, and a very satisfying culmination in the closing pages. It's simply another reminder of what a reliable, and above all musical, conductor Bernstein was. This mid-price series, called "Bernstein Century," is a real collectors' edition. Outstanding!.......2007-03-06

This performance of the classic "New World" symphony, in my opinion, is the best available. First of all, the remastering is outstanding, the performance is absolutely complete (following all the composer's 'repeat' indications in the score (something rarely heard or adhered to). The only thing I find to be somewhat disappointing (although really not a complaint) is Bernstein's breakneck tempi; this is a pet-peeve of mine applicable to almost every present-day or recent conductor. Slow it down man! This recording is so far the only one I'd recommend to new listeners. BRAVO

The Best one Edition of Dvorak Symphony No.9.......2007-01-22

This record is so particularly than any other records of Dvorak Symphony No.9, especially its cello and double bass part. WOW! It's so clear and powerful.

Not as much as I expected, but fairly descent enough........2004-08-03

Bernstein has been one of my favorite conductor of all times, but as for many famed conductors, some performances, genre to genre, composer to composer, are quite outstanding, and others not so impressive. In the CBS/Sony Mahler's Symphony No. 1, Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and much of Copland's pieces and his own are among his highlights. I was quite disgusted, on the other hand by the poor somewhat empty performance (and some really 50's cinematic sound quality... quite shoddy), such as Respighi's Pines of Rome.

As for this album, I would categorize this performance of Dvorak's "New World Symphony" somewhere in between. There are some parts quite off the edge; many of Bernstein's recordings have somewhat unique interpretations, but I personally don't like some exposed in this piece. In the fourth movement especially, the instant change of tempo from fast to slow, and visa versa was a bit distracting. Other than than it's okay.

My ups, on the other hand, would be the ever-nailbiting first movement, the high tempo really prompts us for a eleven minute trek through the ocean... that was what I was imagining. The scherzo was quite fast too.

As for the "Going Home" theme, it is well-played, even though I still prefer Solti's and Karajan's which seems to touch me more, and Lenny's bit-slug-paced DG recording with the Isreal Phil, 18 minutes of a musical meditation.

Thumbs way up for the Carnival Overture! Packs quite a punch... my favorite performance of the piece, along with Zubie's (Zubin Mehta) collaboration with the same orchestra.

The selected Slovanic Dances are good, but Szell's complete set would be the one to look for.

Some ups and few downs, but that's only my taste. Listen to find out what you think.

For Bernstein Fans.......2003-06-25

This is a very good recording of Dvorak 9. It is not the best that I have heard (I can recall a late Karajan and especially the late 50s Szell/Cleavland SO) but Berntsein, the quintessential American conductor, very aptly caputres the spirit of this, a quintessential American symphony. I simply don't feel that Bernstein dedicated his whole self into making this the perfect recording. I can say this honestly because I've heard him come as close to perfection as is possible in several other recordings however I simply do not feel that energy here.

This is a very good recording, top 10 percentile, but it is neither the best example of Dvorak's work nor the best example of Bernstein's work.

A CD full of ups and downs.......2003-01-08

Dvorak's 9th is easily one of the most famous pieces of classical music, and certainly I share in the love that many have for this piece. I know it very well, and thus it's been hard to find a recording that truly agrees with me.

I hate to give such a difference of opinion here, but I really do not have the same opinion as most people seem to with this recording of Dvorak's 9th. The reason for this is mainly the second movement; for whatever reason, many conductors take this piece at a tempo that to my ears just seems very slow and pondering. Yes, it is an adagio, but it is also a very song-like melody that needs to flow, and Bernstein here simply does not put forth the forward movement that to me is needed here. In the 4th movement, also, he seems to slow and speed a bit too eclecticly that grates on me, though the music is marvelously played with wonderful brass.

On the flip side, there are the first and third movements. Simply put, this is the finest rendition of the first movement I've ever heard. It contains all the enegery needed, and what is possibly my favorite musical moment ever -- the spot where there is a low flute solo at the end of the exposition -- is so beautiful I want to melt. So to the third movement is great, though perhaps a bit TOO fast (better too fast than too slow in this case, though), and if it weren't for the second movement's problems I'd say that these two movements make this a must buy.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Great value!.......2007-06-01

I think this 7 cd set is totally worth the low price.
I can't find any review of this set of CDs online, so I did some research after I bought it.
It is the first CD release of Sir Andrew Davis's complete Dvorak's symphonies.
These recordings were made between 1978-1982 by CBS. (ADD/DDD)
SONY DSD remaster eliminated most of the early digital sound problems.
PO players produced warm and dramatic sounds.
The still young Andrew Davis did a great job adding his personal reading of the scores. I like his slower tempo treatment of Symphony No. 9.
Symphony no.1,3 and the Carnival overture are also great.
Only down side is the linear notes is too short, and lack of detail.
Dvorak's music always bring me the love for life. I hope you will enjoy it too.

I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:

Narration with music.......2006-01-07

I ordered this CD because of the price, and quickly found out why it is a cheap one. The narration is fine, but it is spoken over the music, and the music is just excerpts except for the featured selections at the end of the CD, which is all of four pieces. This is a great CD for the car - a little audio learning lesson, and does give a good intro into some of Dvoraks most famous pieces. But, it is no Carl Haas rendition.

This Dvorak ninth will rip your freakin' head off man!!!!!!!!!!
Masur and the Nypo play like demons with a technical skill that is devastating especially with the fact that this is a live performance.
This is PURE POWER with the timpani placed forward so that the strokes pound the livin' crap out of your freakin' noggin!!!!!
Masur takes a direct approach to the score with a careful ear for detail accompanied with eloquent expressiveness resulting in a truly memorable performance.
This is the ninth to own if you want sheer orchestral dynamite,
expressive though sensible phrasing, and spontaneous uninhibited music making magic.
You can get this superlative recording right now and all for the price of a big mac with a large frie and chocolate shake but without the heart stopping cholesterol and fat.

I believe that this is one of the best albums that I have ever had a chance to listen to. Altdough I think that the part with the Slavic dances isn't as good as the Symphony, the album in all is very, very, very good.
I reccomend it to all who want to take their first steps into classical music. Symphony No9, and especially this recording of it (perfect sound, perfect performance),will definately make you want more of classical music. Buy it, enjoy it!!

This sizzling performance of Dvorák's last symphony came as something of a surprise. Kurt Masur is usually a solid but unexciting conductor. It seems that he really loves this symphony, for his performance is as dynamic and passionate as any in the catalog. What's less controversial is the fact that he has the New York Philharmonic playing magnificently, making this also one of the best versions around from the technical point of view. I'm surprised this CD doesn't get more recognition. I was looking for a more-recently recorded "New World" (1990's to present) and I have found it in Kurt Masur and the NY Philharmonic. I did a little bit of research on this CD by going to various bookstores and searching on the internet for reviews and recommendations on Dvorak's "New World" Symph. Gramophone picked this recording as the best "New World".
After listening to many sample tracks I chose this recording because of Masur's interpretation, great dynamics, precise playing, and wonderful recording. The Slavonic dances sound good too. If you're in the market for another version of Dvorak's "New World" or just an amateur listener like myself who is looking for a wonderful CD to listen to then look no further than Kurt Masur.

"Going Home" Greatness.......2001-05-24

Of the 100 or so recordings of Dvorak's last and best known symphony, this one goes to the top of the list. Maestro Masur and his superb orchestra play with precision and passion, breathing both drama and poetry into this great work. The opening movement begins slowly but then sweeps the listener along with rich string playing and exquisite flute solos, culminating in a truly awesome trombone entrance at the end. Thomas Stacy's playing of the famous "going home" theme in the Largo will melt your heart, and again the brass choirs open the gates of heaven in awesome fashion near the end, followed by a magical transition to the serene coda. The third movement is taken at a leisurely pace, allowing the woodwind solos to breathe and sing, but the drama returns with a powerfully played finale. The three lively Slavonic Dances are also well-played but anticlimactic after the magnificent performance of the symphony. Taken from a live performance, the recording has a few unobtrusive noises and a couple of overly loud horn entrances, but the sense of almost "being there" and participating in the grand sweep, power, and beauty of a special occasion, along with the near-perfection of the playing, completely overcome any reservations. The Teldec engineers have captured it in rich and spacious sound, which displays Dvorak's Slavic sound and wonderful orchestral effects in marvelous detail. This recording is a must for all those who appreciate great music and great orchestral playing.

One of the New York Philharmonic's best in the Masur era.......2001-03-31

Kurt Masur is often criticized for being a gifted technician, but emotionally uninspiring, at the podium. Such criticism isn't valid here. This is one of the most emotionally stirring performances I have heard of Dvorak's "New World" 9th Symphony, ably recorded by Teldec's sound engineers. Masur pours his heart and soul into his conducting, and the result is a splendid, technically superb, yet vibrant, performance by the New York Philharmonic. The winds, brass and string sections play with much exuberant warmth, without missing Masur's cues for technical perfection. As usual, Teldec's engineers have produced a well-balanced recording which captures all the subtle textures in this monumental work of late 19th Century classical music. When Kurt Masur finally leaves the podium as the New York Philharmonic's music director next spring, this recording will be long remembered as one of his finest artistic triumphs.

Remarkable.......2000-01-04

I just received this cd for Christmas, and I can tell you it is marvellous. It far surpasses the other three versions I own of this piece. I was also shocked to see the respected "Penguin Guide to Classical CD's" not include this in their recommended list of Dvorak nines. I fail to find any fault with this performance, and indeed the sound and energy are absolutely invigorating while at the same time lyrical and poetic. This is just a great disc.

Powerful, moving... a masterpiece........1998-10-14

Definitely the best performance of Dvorak's 9th I have ever heard. Besides mere technical expertise (flawless!), it has an emotional element that is lacking in many other renditions. Much stronger in the tenor and bass ranges than other performances of his 9th, this album is incredibly powerful.

Slavonic Tempi.......2007-02-18

A word about the Slavonic Dances: The first two are conducted at a tempo somewhat faster than more famous conductors such as Mackerras and Szell which makes them more enjoyable to listen to; but the second two - at least on my recording which I believe was either an earlier or later issue with a different cover - are piano arrangements.

Point Classics often does a decent job of delivering decent performances at a dirt-cheap price. However, I have found that some of the playing/conducting on this particular recording are a little subpar.

And by a little I mean a lot.

My main complaint is the first movement of the New World Symphony. It is conducted rather inconsistently, and the conductor (Anton Nanut) seems to ignore the dynamic levels of certain parts of the orchestra--particularly the flutes.

The rest of the Symphony is much better, but could still stand a little polishing. The beautiful second movement is spoiled a bit by a flute solo played too forte, but that's my only major qualm with the rest of the recording.

The Symphonic Dances are in general played and conducted better than the symphony, so no complaints there.
