Amazon.com essential recording
Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve Gdula

ABBA was/is Top of the Pops. But did you know these?.......2007-07-05
Nothing in this life has brought me more joy that ABBA. From the first time I heard Waterloo, until the fanatic state began with Fernando, they have had my heart like no other group. GOLD is the best essence of ABBA. It has the best of the best sans Summer Night City, which is on the subsequent More Gold. Their only pop rivals in sales were The Bee Gees and the enormously huge pop/disco group Boney M. Relative unknowns in the US. Check them out. Not so much Abba sounding, but if you like good melodies and irresistable hooks, great purchase. Another big, but short-lived pop group was Clout. Much more like Abba. Highly recommended.
Better music.......2007-06-27
I have tried to get some of thier CDs for some time but this CD was worth the wait, sounds are great and are a "sing along with" mode, great CD.
One of the best Swedish imports.......2007-05-24
Abba's Greatest Hits lives up to its title. This is an excellent comp album. All of the hits are here [I am just old enough to remember Abba's heyday]. This is a very good, very well-rounded collection of Abba's recordings. There's not a lame song on here. The album can be listened to straight through without ever being tempted to hit the skip button. Simply some of the best pop music ever, not just from the 70s. Abba was a bright spot of the 70s, countering a bad presidency and wicked gas prices. Hmmmm, we have those back again, come to think of it. Where's our Abba?
Make sure this is what you're looking for........2007-05-16
Abba was a pretty prolific and popular group in the 70s. For those of us familiar with ABBA, this album is great. Those who aren't might want to give this a try. You've probably heard some of their tunes before without even realizing it was ABBA. Note that there is another greatest hits collection called the Definitive Collection. It's a 2 disc set that contains everything on this album, some lesser hits and a remix or two as well. For the die hard fan you might want to check into the Definitive Collection (or the Complete Studio Collection for you ABBA freaks out there). For the passing fan like myself, all of the great stuff is here.
Awesome.......2007-04-12
This compilation contains all of the biggest hits by ABBA. It starts off with a great 1-2 punch of "Dancing Queen" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You". The hits just keep on coming, "Waterloo", "Gimmie a Man After Midnight", "Voules Vouz", "Fernando", "SOS", "I Had a Dream". There are a couple songs I wish were on here like "People Need Love", "If It Wasn't for the Night" and Frida's solo hit "I Know There's Something Going On".

The Swedish quartet that conquered the WORLD!.......2005-06-13
A recent PBS special made me dig this one out of the recesses of my music collection and, man, was I glad to rediscover the music. I had forgotten how popular the group was, how intricate were the compositions sung, and how sexy Agnetha and Frida were, even wearing their over-the-top fashions.
It's a shame that the album is not in stock for it features thirteen of the group's best and most memorable pop creations. Culled from the chartmaking years of 1975 - 1978, the 14 tracks are:
1. "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)"
2. "Knowing Me, Knowing YOu"
3. "Take a Chance on Me"
4. "Money, Money, Money"
5. "Rock Me"
6. "Eagle"
7. "Angeleyes"
8. "Dancing Queen" - The group's signature song
9. "Does Your Mother Know" - A really FUN tune
10. "Chiquita"
11. "Summer Night City"
12. "I Wonder (Departure)"
and these two personals favorites,
13. "The Name of the Game"
14. "Thank You for the Music"
The aforementioned special indicated that the group sold over 380,000,000 recordings in its tenure.
Now, that's a lotta plastic!!!

Customer Reviews:
Finally! An MLPS Design Worthy To Challenge the Best of the Japanese!.......2007-06-27
For many, many years now our friends from Japan have been the undoubted masters of the mini-lp replica sleeve a.k.a. mlps design format. In addition to the usually brilliant sound quality of their discs, they have consistently managed to build great lp sleeve replicas using high quality cardboard very well put together and the attention to detail is astonishing too. They also have the sensitivity to protect the disc itself from scratches and dust with polythene bags that resemble those used for the original lps.
Now whenever our friends from Europe or even the U.S. try their hands at mlps design, they have always fallen way short in some way or other. Now though, we have an exception to the rule! This 30th anniversary version of Abba's early Greatest Hits album is a real classic which rivals the best of the Japanese mlps designs that I've seen. In some ways, such as the way the cd itself is a replica of a black vinyl disc, they have even surpassed their Asian counterparts who rarely even go to this detail.
Although this version doesn't have the polythene bags to protect the disc from dust or scratches at least they had the good sense to ensure the inner sleeve fold is on the outside and so not risk scratching the disc every time you remove or put the disc back. Another ingredient that is missing as compared with Japanese mlps designs is the booklet inserts that frequently include the lyrics as well as essays and other interesting liner notes about the band or the album. Still, I suppose as the original lps never had these, this version is still very faithful to the original.
A word about the tracks themselves though as although the sound quality is very good, the tracks are still a little muddy and not as good sound-wise as those found on the 2-disc "Abba: The Definitive Collection" album. However, there are tracks here that are not found on that album; besides the brilliant "Hasta Manana" we also have "Nina Pretty Ballerina", "Bang a Boomerang", "Another Town, Another Train" and "Dance While the Music Still Goes On."
Overall, this is a surprisingly good mlps design from a European issuer although sound quality-wise it isn't as good as the remastered 2-disc compilation mentioned above, it does have many tracks that are not on those discs. For fans of well made mlps cds, this is a must have and comes highly recommended.
Classic seventies album.......2007-03-17
I was thrilled to hear that this album would finally be released on CD, because it is undoubtedly one of THE classic albums of the seventies and ABBA's definitive breakthrough in the albums market. It became the second biggest-selling album of the seventies in the UK, only beaten by 'Bridge over troubled water' by Simon & Garfunkel. This CD version was long overdue. Actually, in my country we got a slightly different compilation back in 1976. That one omitted 'He is your brother' and 'Another town, another train', had a different running order and also a different (not fold-out) cover. I remember playing that album to pieces.
The artwork of this CD release is exceptionally well done, staying as close as possible to the vinyl version. This was how the album was released in Sweden, with 'Fernando' as the first track (in the UK it was the last track).
At the time, the album title was rather puzzling, since several of the tracks were from ABBA's first, internationally unreleased, album 'Ring Ring' and therefor completely unknown to an international audience. That didn't prevent the album from becoming one of ABBA's biggest worldwide sellers.
This album may not have all of ABBA's biggest hits (you would have to resort to 'ABBA Gold' for that), but for nostalgic reasons it is an essential addition to any serious CD collection.
For True ABBA Fans!.......2006-11-09
Although there are no new songs, new versions or new mixes, this is a unique album. Not only the packaging but what the album itself means. This was the first ABBA album to top the charts in Europe back in the middle 70's. The cover is quite unusual for an ABBA album (still I prefer the park bench cover shot). This is the first time it is re-issued on CD. Want more reasons to buy it? Then you are not a true ABBA fan!
International collection.......2006-06-07
This greatest hits collection was originally released in Sweden in 1975 with the bizarre artwork as approved by the members of ABBA. Alot of the tracks contained were only hits in Sweden, but they were all brilliant tracks nevertheless. A year later, the collection was released in United Kingdom with a different cover (ABBA sitting on a parkbench) and an additional track "Fernando" which, at the time, was roaring up the charts.
In Australia, where ABBA fever was VERY high, we got a completely different collection in 1976 called "Best of ABBA" which contained about 80% of the tracks from "Greatest Hits". The Aussie compilation contained some very interesting artwork itself, although is unlikely to ever be released on CD. It was No.1 on the album charts for ages, and the famous ABBA tour down under in 1977 ensured that the "Best Of" compilation stayed on the album charts.
As the other reviewer pointed out, GREATEST HITS is a must own ... it was an album which remained in UK charts for abolutely ages back in the 70's. The anniversary CD pays tribute to that fact by presenting it like an LP record with all the original artwork (as well as the parkbench picture for the UK fans). Even if you have all these songs scattered across your other ABBA CD's, buy it for the history. And while you are at it, check out the ABBA website and search for the artwork for the Australian compilation ("Best of" album)
ABBA ruled the 70's ....
Top notch packaging!.......2006-05-18
Let me first say that the packaging of this 30th anniversary disc is why you want it. Released in 1975, this was ABBA's biggest selling album. The odd part is that here in the States, these aren't ABBA's Greatest Hits! But around the rest of the world these were all early hits for the band.
The album is released using the original artwork used in Sweden. Most other countries used the inner shot of the group sitting on a park bench as the cover. I always liked the bizarre darwing better. Aside from the cover, the entire packaging has been designed to look like an LP. The sleeve is made of glossy hard cardboard, it is a gatefold cover like the original album. The coolest part is the CD itself, it sits inside a paper sleeve (just like an LP) and the front of the CD is black has grooves on it and the original Polar label in the center. The backside of the CD is also black, not the standard silver. Very cool they way this was put together.
The music on here has been reissued many times over the years and is readly available everywhere. The unique packageing is what makes this one for your collection.

29 Years Later It's Now Okay To LIke Abba!!!!.......2005-06-12
This album was released back in 1976 when I was 16 and if I recall corectly NOBODY over the age of 15 would admit to liking this band let alone buying any of their albums. This is kind of like the Wine Industry where once upon a time NOBODY in the Anglo-Saxon Western World would admit to liking wine but the Sales Figures contradicted this. My, how times have changed. Now it is 29 years after this album was released and it seems like ABBA now has more fans today than it did way back in the 1970's. Somewhere along the line it became "cool" to like this band.Until then if you bought an ABBA album and were seen doing this you told everybody it was for your baby sister. As I said , Times sure have changed. This album contains catchy tunes and soaring vocals from Frida and Agnetha.ABBA ROCKS!!!Gee. I would have been laughed out of school in 1976 for saying that!!!

a VERY FINE SET........2006-06-19
I don't understand the only other review here or why this set doesn't have more reviews; but this is a nice way to repackage material.
Here is ABBA Gold (disc 1) and More ABBA Gold (disc 2) and every (??) ABBA video ever made. If it's not every video it has to be very close to it. Plus there are some Extras on the DVD giving the history of ABBA.
The packaging is very nice and all my friends like it enough to buy their own.
While the "Thank You For The Music" 4 disc set is great; it has filler and non-hits that may annoy the casual fan wanting only the big hits they know from radio.
This set is the HITS and you can play the DVD at parties and watch the Justice League of Disco in their funky clothes fight bad melodies with superb pop music.

Album Description
ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus (vocals, guitar); Benny Andersson (vocals, keyboards); Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog (vocals). Producers: Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus. Compilation producer: Chris Griffin. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Michael B. Tretow (Polar Studios). In seemingly random; which is to say, it contains nineteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop. The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. Without them, Madonna's very existence would be highly unlikely. With its Latin beat and gospel harmonies, "Lay Your Love All Over Me," one of the five songs here that didn't chart in the U.S., sounds like the very source of "Like A Prayer." Like Madonna, Abba had a grandiose vision of pop's place in the world--"who could live without it, I ask in all honesty," is how they put it in "Thank You For The Music," their Broadway-like farewell gesture. Hearing these singles, its hard to imagine anyone ever did. Digitally remastered edition of the original collection released in 1982. 'Gold' features nine number one singles & is the definitive Abba album to own. Universal. 2006
