I love harp music and this is a fabulous CD. It is wonderfully produced, the selections especially moving for the instrument. The Debussey track with NW Sinfonietta is thrilling, the impressionistic feel captured in wave-like crescendo/decrescendo, especially after I discovered that the balance is all achieved through the conducting not any electronic means or studio mixing.

Best for Medieval Popular repertoire.......2001-12-05
Strada is simply the best when it comes to the medieval popular repertoire. The instrumentals are lively, folksy, and virtuosic. The vocals are passionate and also well within the folk vein. I never thought that I would come across a recording of medieval music that sounded so much like the field recordings of folk musicians that Alan Lomax and his colleagues have made, but this one is it--I have quite a vast collection of early music, and this one far surpasses all the others in its interpretations of medieval popular music. While the two trouvere songs done in a courtly vein leave a little to be desired (look to Joel Cohen's Camerata Mediterranea, Anne Azema, and Sinfonye for good recordings of the courtly repertoire), the dances and folk songs are outstanding. They are exhuberant and literally make you dance--not just sit there nodding your head, but actually dance. This is how all dance music should be, medieval and modern (although I must admit my unfamiliarity with much modern music). Throughout the recording you will hear shrieks of joy, hand-clapping, feet-stomping, and shouts of exhileration. The air of spontaneity is absolutely incredible, and you get this overwhelming impression that you are listening to a bunch of street performers playing to a rowdy (perhaps drunk) crowd, hungry for lively dance music--in this way, this recording boasts more historical faithfulness than most recordings of this repertoire can even approach.

From the first haunting notes of a lone violin, Land o' the Leal takes hold of our hearts and never lets go. With singer/songwriter Kirsten Baird Gustafson as our guide, we are taken on a musical journey from birth to the afterlife with interludes of life, love and humor.
There is the passionate plea for the future in "Speaking with the Angel" with its gentle, sweet melody powered by a forceful undercurrent of emotion. In "Caer's Song", Kirsten's accomplished songwriting skills are displayed as her moving music is paired with the evocative lyrics of poet Patricia Monaghan. "Ailean Deinn" features an acapella arrangement of this traditional song with spare open vocals by Kirsten supported by a solid foundation of harmony featuring the Derry Aires. The title song, "Land o' the Leal" finishes the album with a vision of the future delivered with tender loving care.
Land o' the Leal is a kingdom of misty mornings, emerald vistas and golden promises that resides on the other side of the sea. It can be found in Kirsten Baird Gustafson whose intimate voice rings out in crystalline purity. Her's is the voice of life experienced and won.
