Classic Chamber Music with Clarinet.......2003-05-23

I have often thought that if I took up a wind instrument, it would be the clarinet. It is possibly the most perfectly constructed and smoothly functioning of all the wind instruments. It has an almost four-octave range (by virtue of it being overblown at the twelfth, not the octave like all the other orchestral winds), a very wide dynamic range from the merest whisper to a clarion tone (in fact, the term 'clarion' and the term 'clarinet' come from the same root), incredible flexibility (closest of any wind to that of the violin), mimics the human voice in its range and sound and, finally, has the smoothest most ingratiating tone (as Mike Myers's 'Linda Richman' would say, 'Like buttah!'). [Please don't be mad at me, all you oboists, bassoonists and flutists out there!]

Beethoven: Trio in B flat, Op. 11
Brahms: Trio in A minor, Op. 114
Berg: Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 5
Mendelssohn: Konzertstücke 1 & 2 for Clarinet, Basset-Horn and Piano, Opp. 113 & 114

The clarinetist is one of the best - Peter Schmidl, principal clarinet of the Vienna Philharmonic. His colleagues - Madoka Inui, piano; Teodora Mileva, cello; and Pierre Pichler, basset-horn, are fully his equals. The playing is suave, the ensemble tightly coordinated and the recorded sound clear and life-like. This is 68 minutes of unalloyed beauty. Naxos has come up with another winner.

The jewel box liner and booklet have the designation 'Philharmonic Soloists' emblazoned on them. Can we hope that various other of the Vienna Philharmonic's principals will have similar discs in the future?

Chamber music at its best.......2003-05-22

The sound of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has committed me like a guardian angel since I was a little child. Listening with my parents to the radio transmissions of Salzburg Festival (we were positively unable to buy tickets) I got my first idea of a better world. Now listening to the first CD of a new edition with soloists of VPO, I felt the same calm euphory. Peter Schmidl, VPO's first clarinet, has taught two generations of young musicians. His recording of Mozart's clarinet concert under Leonard Bernstein has become part of musical history. On this CD he performs with brilliant young partners chamber music by Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Alban Berg. Warmth and sensuality of his tone are unbeatable even by other world champions like Meyer, de Payer or Leister. The piano part is admirably played by Madoka Inui - brilliance, elegance and intellectual analysis of her interpretaion are first class. So: Who ever calls himself a clarinet maniac - and this is not difficult, because no other wind instrument is closer to human voice - should listen into that recording. The price is a sensation and the booklet, written by Schmidl himself, too. Chamber music at its best.

I have become quite enchanged with this album. I listen to it often and really enjoy the variety of music on the album. It is particularly enjoyable with the noise-cancelling headphones while kicking back in the recliner!

A Wonderful Discovery.......2006-05-21

Domenico Dragonetti is known in the bass world simply as the first virtuoso bassist. It is also fortunate he was a half-way decent composer of 10 known bass concertos and other scattered works for bass. The concerto presented here, simply as "concerto in G Major", I believe was originally an andante and rondo renamed for publication. I have been unable to find the sheet music for this piece anywhere, or even a mention of it, but it is still a wonderful work with excellent execution. The duo is a lighthearted piece in Dragonetti's realm, as he mostly performed on bass with his friend (who's name I can't recall) on cello.

The only work without bass is the quartet, which is captivating and full of excitement from the very first statement. I hope that someday quartets will discover this particular work, as I am sure it would be a hit with audiences.

The waltzes present the bass as a pure solo instrument, and achieves the perfect balance of melody and harmony on the melodic instrument. Bravo to Ubaldo for such an amazing performance!

The quintet is basically a work for solo bass and quartet accompianment, as the bass steps out of the shadow of a chamber music piece and assumes the violin I position of melody.

Overall, there is never a question of intonation or ensemble anywhere on any track. It is a must have for bassists for inspiration and for anyone who has just discovered Dragonetti.

Not a bad bang for your buck.......2002-08-06

I stumbled across this recording in [the store], and for the broke opera lover I am, I figured it was worth a whirl.

There aren't any noteworthy names in this Turandot, which I found to be rather disappointing, but taken on its own, for [$$]it didn't disappoint! Liu's voice conveyed every ounce of innocence and raw passion she has for Calef far better than I've previously heard. Calef is adequate enough, although his Nessun Dorma was rather disappointing. Turandot was incredible, taken on her own, but I know that I won't be the only one who can't help but compare her to Callas or Sutherland. Ping, Pang, and Pong are probably the most delightful trio I've heard or seen in any recording or production.

The most rewarding quality to this recording seems to be the orchestra and chorus of Romanian Radio-Television under the direction of Carol Litvin. They are perfectly in sync with one another, and carry the brutality of a people living under the bloody reign of Turandot. The moods are intense and leave you holding your breath, waiting for the next measure. The sound quality is impeccable, especially given the fact it was recorded in 1970; its digital re-master from the original analog tapes was incredibly well-done.

All-in-all, you could very well do worse, and this recording made for a delightful find and addition to my CD collection. Running time 78:48 minutes and 40:23 minutes on Discs 1 and 2, respectively, VoxBox records.
