A magnificent interpretation of JS Bach's Advent Cantatas by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, a great joy and companion for those wonderful Advent Sundays.
Very nice performances of Bach cantatas.......2006-01-09
Bach wrote two really good cantatas to the text "Nun komm, der heidend heiland and the Monteverdi Choir under the direction of John Eliot Gardiner does a wonderful job of performing these delightful cantatas. Both cantatas start with impressive choruses and are filled with nice arias.
Cantata BWV 36 "Swhings freudig euch empor" also provides some good classic Bach with a good interplay of various instruments with touching vocals. As a rule, look for Gardiner performances of Bach cantatas because they are performed well and are delightful to the ear. If Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir have performed a Bach Cantata, snatch it up.
Spellbinding Performancesof Bach Led by Gardiner.......2003-07-16
I am not familiar with Bach's prodigious output of choral music, but this splendid CD will surely be the first of many in my collection. Sir John Eliot Gardiner leads his English Baroque Soloists and Monteverdi Choir in a set of spellbinding performances of J. S. Bach's cantatas composed in honor of Advent. These are lyrical, vibrant performances from both the original instruments and the choir, with special note given to Nancy Argenta's silky phrasing. I have no doubt that these will be viewed as the definitive recordings of Bach's Advent cantatas. The sound quality is exceptional for an early 1990's recording. Fans of historically correct performances, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and of course, J. S. Bach, will not be disappointed with this CD.
A delight.......2001-01-25
J. S. Bach lavished his inventive genius on the cantatas he wrote for weekly church services, and they are altogether too little known. This recording features three cantatas for the First Sunday in Advent (the only Sunday in Advent at which concerted music was sung). All three are built around the great German Advent hymn "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland," written by Martin Luther. Despite their common reliance on this hymn, there is no tedium here; each cantata has its own distinctive voice and message.
Gardiner conducts vital performances. Outstanding among the soloists is the silvery-voiced Nancy Argenta. Those who claim that historically informed performance practice and early instruments give anemic results have not heard performances like this.

The compositions collected in this set are dedicated to four Christian holidays: Easter, Ascention, Advent and Christmas. Each of the four CD's, wonderfully realized under Herreweghe's intelligent direction, focuses on one of the feasts.
CD1: - (a) Easter cantata "Erfreut euch, Ihr Herzen," originally composed as a secular work, but later adapted for the Easter celebration in Leipzig in 1724. An interesting feature of this cantata is a dialogue between fear and hope, personifying the complexity of feelings experienced in anticipation of the resurrection. (b) Easter Oratorio, also deriving from secular material and originally designated "cantata." This oratorio, opening with the beautiful instrumental Sinfonia, features a celebratory vocal interchange between the two Marys, Peter and John. SATB: Barbara Schlick, Kai Wessel, James Taylor, Peter Kooy.
CD2: - (a) Feast of the Ascention cantatas "Gott fahret auf mit Jauchzen" and "Sie werden euch in den Bann tun." The first is an unusually long cantata (could easily be called an oratorio), which is based on a six-stanza poem from the scripture - Bach varies the lengthy piece by alternating short arias and recitatives while keeping constant the combinations of solo voices. The second cantata is remarkable for its opening section combining an AT canon with a homophonic choral line, set against a chromatic continuo. (b) Ascension Oratorio, Bach's briefest oratorio. It is structured as a "historia," i.e. the narrative of the event. SATB: Barbara Schlick, Catherine Patriasz, Christoph Pregardien, Peter Kooy.
CD3: - Advent Cantatas "Schwingt freudig euch empor," and two versions of "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland" (BWV 61 & 62) have each been inspired by Martin Luther's German version of the Catholic hymn Veni redemptor gentium. The gist of these cantatas is the opening of one's heart to god, symbolically expressed as the opening of doors. SATB: Sibylla Rubens, Sarah Connolly, Christoph Pregardien, Peter Kooy.
CD4: - Christmas cantatas "Das neugeborne Kindelein," "Under Mund sei voll Lachens," & "Selig ist der Mann." The first two are celebratory (the tenor aria "Ihr Gedanken" is a special treat), while the third, set out in the 17-th century form of a dialogue between Jesus and the soul (SB), is contemplative and filled with the londing for death.
