Mahler's sunniest, most outwardly lyrical symphony was a long-time favorite of Benjamin Britten, whose own orchestral works share Mahler's propensity for deploying large forces with chamber-like restraint. Britten's brisk and steady pacing provides a foundation from which genial inflections of phrase and volatile dynamic pointings come off with both spontaneity and shape. Soprano Joan Carlyle is on her conductor's wavelength, notwithstanding a slight mistake on her last entrance, from which she quickly rebounds. The couplings are, if anything, more persuasive interpretively and better recorded. Some listeners might prefer a lighter voice than Anne Reynolds's operatic way with the Wayfarer songs, but Elly Ameling's radiant pair from The Youth's Magic Horn provides a memorable cap to a fascinating portrait of Britten in music he otherwise didn't record. The excellent booklet notes supply invaluable context for these important performances. --Jed Distler
