Customer Reviews:
THE Peer Gynt.......2007-07-12
Sir Thomas Beecham was one of the giants in the "Golden Age of Conductors". In this famous recording he proves why. This familiar music has been recorded by numerous artists over the years but none has ever caught the real drama of the music like Beecham. The fact that this recording has never been out of print since it was first issued is a testament to its worthiness. If you do not now own the piece, buy this one. Even if you do own someone else's version, buy this one. You will not be disappointed. The only quibble which I have and which has been voiced by others, is the fact that the vocal parts are sung in German and not Norwegian. This is not a fatal defect in my opinion. Grieg himself and, for that matter, most Norwegians of his era were equally fluent in German. It is the music which is important and you will not find a better rendition of Peer Gynt than this one.
As an added bonus, there are some other delightful Grieg masterworks to savor.
Terrific, authoritative Grieg collection from Beecham.......2004-10-08
Okay, I'll admit that I am not as familiar with Sir Thomas Beecham's conducting as I am with, say, Herbert von Karajan's or Leonard Bernstein's. I've heard a few stories about his wise-old-man demeanor on the podium, but of his actual recordings I have heard only a handful. This is the only disc of his that I personally own, but it is a beauty. The booklet notes talk about Beecham's dedication to Grieg's music, especially his lesser-known works; that dedication is apparent in all of these performances. Of all recordings of selections from Grieg's complete incidental music for Ibsen's PEER GYNT, Beecham's would probably rank near the top, if not all the way at the top. The highlight of the performance, for me, is "Ase's Death", which I've never heard done as solemnly and beautifully (or as slowly) as it is here by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra strings under Beecham's direction. The rest is just as vividly characterized (wonderful "Morning", especially), with Ilse Hollweg making for a touching Solveig in "Solveig's Song" and "Solveig's Lullaby".
As for the fill-ups: Grieg's "Symphonic Dance No. 2" may not be a very substantial work, but Beecham makes a good case for it, wonderfully sentimental in the outer sections and troubled in the middle section. The concert overture "In Autumn" is also a fun and dramatic work; and the "Old Norwegian Folksong with Variations" is full of life and color through its many variations, especially in its final ones. The recorded sound is rich, warm analogue that truly brings out the luster of these performances. All in all, these are some terrifically authoritative Grieg performances from a conductor who apparently loved these works and was able to translate that affection into performance. Highly recommended.
A CLASS ACT.......2004-02-20
Much as I dislike the word, it's simplest to use it - Beecham had class. I do not believe I can even think of anything he ever did badly, or anything that is lacking in grace and elegance. There is strength there too, and obviously a touch (or more than just a touch) of arrogance. He was no great enthusiast for Bach, Beethoven or Brahms, and it's hard not to suspect that this was at least partly because these gardens of the muses were particularly well-tended by so many others. He was impatient and easily exasperated by Bruckner and Vaughan Williams, and I have to confess so am I. That left a great deal for Beecham to outshine all others in, and here he is outshining them all in Grieg's Peer Gynt.
It does not seem to me that Grieg is even remotely equal to the theme of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, which I believe rivals the story of Faust itself in its contemplation of the issues of love, death and redemption. Grieg does not have the `size' for that. What he is able to do is embroider the theme with musical numbers that are by turns picturesque, sentimental and sometimes even deeply felt beyond mere sentiment. It is a kind of music that called up Beecham's special wizardry in particular. The opening wedding march has the familiar Beecham swagger, the trolls in the Hall of the Mountain King are almost worthy of Peter Jackson, the hackneyed Morning breaks like the first morning, and Ase's death strikes a deeper note. Here the composer actually does get somewhere close, in a simplified way, to the complex tenderness and pathos of the scene where Gynt eases the worn-out old woman out of this world. The orchestral tone Beecham obtains near the end, and the exquisite timing of the final chords, are things worth getting this disc for on their own. Ilse Hollweg as Solveig is quite outstanding in the famous Solveig's Song and in the final lullaby.
For its time the recorded quality is quite extraordinarily good. Beecham was particularly adept at obtaining good recordings, by what combination of personal magnetism and outright intimidation I don't know although it's probably easy to guess. There is a fine little selection of makeweights bringing the playing time of the set to an hour and a quarter.
One of the best of the series.......2001-10-16
These performances are so good they actually made me reconsider the music. Prior to hearing Beecham's recording the only Grieg that I found really enjoyable were his lyric pieces played by Emil Gilels - and frankly I wondered how much of that could be attributed to Gilels. Modern versions of his orchestral music always felt a little empty and, inevitably, failed to inspire repeated listenings. This recording is so alive, vibrant and emotionally communicative that it's now a firm and much listened to favourite. Also the sound quality is hard to believe - over forty years old and it sounds better than almost all modern orchestral recordings - lots of detail and a lifelike warm tone. The recent remastering process used by EMI seems to work its wonders best with these 50's and 60's analog recordings. Anyway, this is the sort of CD I'd like to buy as a present for a good friend - just fantastic music making.
Well deserves its rosette award........2001-01-12
Beecham's recording of Grieg's Peer Gynt incidental music has been one of his most frequently reissued items since its first 1957 release. Purists and fuss-budgets might cavil at the vocal items being sung in German and the omission of two of the twelve items from the complete score, but there are enough merits to make this preferable to all other versions. The inimitable swagger, the tenderness, the beauty of phrasing, and the finely judged balancing of orchestral textures that Beecham could achieve are everywhere to be heard. Other Grieg works conducted by Beecham, less well-known, have been added, to provide 76 minutes of listening. Digital remastering has enhanced and clarified the stereo originals. This is one of the few CDs to receive a rosette in the prestigious Penguin Guide To Compact Discs.

Love It!.......2005-08-11
I first received this CD as a Christmas present more than 6 years ago. My old copy was too scratched to play any more. I was so happy to see that Amazon carried this CD, it has all the best classics on it!
Best of the Best.......2005-05-11
I listen to a variety of music from Cajun to classic rock, to classical---depending on my mood or the situation. This clasical ensemble truly encompasses some of the most hauntingly beautiful music ever to have been written by our civilization's most talented people. I never tire of listening to it.
GREAT compilation!!!.......1999-07-27
I can only wish that popular music (rock, rap, dance) compilers could take a hint from this album, and include only the GOOD songs. This has all of the well-known classical songs. I really wanted to get the title of a particular classical song, and I looked for 4 weeks on the Internet until I remembered I had this album. I put it in, and the second song, "O Fortuna", was it.
Very well organized.......1999-06-25
I really like to llisten your these MAD ABOUT series. However, I could not buy these series in Japan. Please let me now how to buy these series. And tell me what kind of albums you have in stock, and how much if I need air persel. Thanks.
The greatest parts from all your favorites.......1998-10-18
From 2001: A Space Odyssey's theme, to Beethoven's fifth, this CD has the all time best compilation of Classical and Romatic music I have ever heard. The only thing that comes close is Polygram's Really Mad About the Classics.

"Revealing...Enchanting..Truly Magical" --Two guitars debut!.......2000-11-17
Since I am one of the two artists who make up the Odeum Guitar Duo, I would simply like to share an excellent review by the noted music critic, William Zagorski, of their debut CD release, "Concert Hall Classics", that appears in the Nov/Dec 2000 issue of Fanfare Magazine. The CD was also chosen by Acoustic Guitar Magazine as being one of the ten best independently produced guitar CDs of 2000! The Odeum Guitar Duo is featured in the June, 2000 issue of Acoustic Guitar. Here follows the Fanfare Magazine review of "Concert Hall Classics" by the Odeum Guitar Duo:
ODEUM GUITAR DUO - CONCERT HALL CLASSICS - ROBERT WETZEL, FRED BENEDETTI (gtrs)- SBE 6198 (56:26)
TORELLI Concerto in d. BEETHOVEN Duet with 2 Eye-Glasses Obbligato, WoO 32. RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Sadko: Song of India. SCHUMANN Kinderscenen. Traumerei, Op. 15/7. CHOPIN Waltz in c#, Op.64.2. VIVALDI Concerto in E, Op.3/12, RV 265. BOCCHERINI Quintet in D,G.448: Introduction and Fandango
"The Odeum Guitar Duo's fine metrical discipline was the first of their virtues that struck me in the auditioning of this disc. Any neophyte (and less than neophyte) conductor will tell you that one of the most challenging demands of the craft is that of starting a piece at one tempo, and ending it, despite various intermittent modifications along the way, in that very same tempo. If one can do this, the music can and will unfold in a truly magical and telling way. The Odeum's revealing realization of Torelli's Concerto in D minor (insightfully arranged by Robert Wetzel, who provided all of this disc's transcriptions) once again proves to me that there is a lot more to that composer than usually comes across in so-called standard performances. Their Vivaldi Concerto in E Major, R265, is sprightly and similarly ear-opening, and their final track--Boccherini's Introduction and Fandango from his D-Major Quintet--brings the disc to a most satisfying close. I found it enchanting not merely because it realized the piece's inherent fire but also because the Odeum Guitar Duo paid enlightening heed to its underlying structure.
The intervening selections--Beethoven's Duet with Two Eye-glasses Obbligato, WoO 32, Rimsky-Korsakov's "Song of India" from his opera, Sadko, and Chopin's Waltz in C# Minor, Op.64, no. 2 (here transposed to A Minor)--show, equally, Wetzel and Benedetti's instrumental skill and Wetzel's perspicacity as a transcriber. My personal test for any transcription is that it be faithful to its model, and that it show that model in a new, and perhaps unexpected, light. These three dashes of contrasting musical color pass that test handily. The recording has been well produced. I found its upper partials (I'm speaking of sound, not teeth) as delightful as the Odeum's clean voice-leading and projection of instrumental color. I HUNGRILY AWAIT THEIR NEXT DISC."
William Zagorski, Fanfare Magazine, November/December, 2000

Customer Reviews:
Highly Disappointing..........2007-04-08
I picked this CD up in the bookstore after listening to it. I'm a big fan of the powerful classics, such as Carmina Burana O Fortuna, and, of course, Verdi's Dies Irae. I already owned those two pieces as well as a few others when I purchased this album. I had figured if they were on it, it was going to be one impressive CD.
I knew something was wrong the moment I started listening to it. Like others have mentioned, the musicmanship is poor. It sounds rushed most of the time. Plus, I compared Massive Classic's versions of Verdi's Dies Irae to the version I already had, and no way do they stand up. One sounded professional, practiced, and powerful. The other, on this CD: wimpy, weak, and lacking.
This CD couldn't take the time to get the best performances of these classics. Don't waste your time listening to it. Find a different album--there are better ones. My suggestions is The Greatest Choral Show on Earth, which features performances from the world's best orchestras and choirs.
I'm not an expert on classical music..........2006-03-08
But MAN do I love this CD! It's fantastic. Most of the songs you've heard from various movies or television shows, and now they're finally all together. I love listening to it while I drive - I find that I don't scream at traffic as much.
Terrible recordings of great songs........2003-12-20
The song selecting is awesome, but the performances and recordings (or the remastering) are awful. The balance seems off (very tinny sound), and the musicianship is weak (Vivaldi's "Summer" sounds like eigth-notes!).
NOTE: this review is for my CD from the BMG music club. I don't know if the CDs are different from what Amazon sells.
Massive Classics: Music You Can't Relax To.......2003-11-19
Exciting and Inspiring! So good my uncle is keeping my CD after he 'borrowed' it, and I have to buy another copy. And I hope it comes soon! Fun to listen to during rush hour traffic!

Product Description
Throughout much of the western world in the 18th and 19th centuries, the sounds of posthorns, bugles, and signal-trumpets were a regular and meaningful part of people s everyday lives. Indeed, it is unlikely that the average person could have gone a single day without hearing a horn or trumpet call of some kind, as these instruments were used in horse-drawn coach and steamship travel, in religious services and civic ceremonies, for hunting and horse racing, by firefighters, athletic and bicycle clubs, and in military settings. However, the most familiar and often-heard calls and tunes were those associated with the postal system and the delivery of the mail, and it was here that signal instruments found their fullest musical development and growth. The importance and prevalence of these "post" horns and the music they produced was such that many composers of art music were inspired to incorporate their signals and songs, or adaptations of them, into their compositions.

With just a casual interest in astrology, Mary Lou Williams created her 1945 Zodiac Suite as a series of character sketches, musical portraits of friends from each sign that she would debut on a weekly radio show. "Aries" is for Ben Webster and Billie Holiday, "Taurus" for Duke Ellington, and "Libra" for Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum, Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk. The pieces include piano solos, duets with bassist Al Lucas, and trios with the addition of drummer Jack "The Bear" Parker. The suite is both a remarkable exercise in extended composition and an index of Williams's varied palette. Her mix of blues and boogie roots and strikingly modernist harmonies is sometimes similar to Monk's, while her lighter, impressionist playing can evoke Claude Debussy (and the way Debussy colored the piano music of Bix Beiderbecke). The cumulative work, though, has a warmly sustained lyricism that can only suggest comparisons with Ellington. The Zodiac Suite would assume more ambitious forms, with a chamber orchestra setting for the entire suite later in 1945 and a large orchestra adaptation of three movements a year later. Dizzy Gillespie recorded three movements with his big band in 1957. But the intimacy of these original recordings is very special, with Williams effectively blurring the line between composition and improvisation. --Stuart Broomer
Album Description
Smithsonian Folkways proudly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the original Asch Records release of Mary Lou Williams' work, Zodiac Suite. Performing solo and accompanied by bassist Al Lucas and drummer Jack Parker, Williams crafted these pieces as a series of dedications to fellow musicians born under each astrological sign. This 12-part interpretation of the zodiac was crafted so each movement comprises a set of jazz tone poems. Six alternate takes, mastered from the original acetates, are featured on this reissue. "Irresistible themes...blending sophistication and intimacy." - DownBeat

13 monsters.......2005-05-23
i wonder why they have that weird looking cover pictured. mine looks nothing like that. anyhow, the music on here is of the highest quality, especially considering it was all written by a female. it is all very pleasant to listen to, the playing is first-class throughout, and the compositions are exceptional. i bought this at the smithsonian folk festival a few summers ago. i'm not really sure why i chose to give it four stars. maybe it deserves five.
One for the stars.......2003-06-28
Mary Lou Williams is a pianist from the galaxy of pianists who came from the Greater Pittsburgh area - Earl Hines, Erroll Garner, Billy Strayhorn, Johnny Costa, etc... she had a pile driving left hand at the piano and a wide-ranging imagination when it came to writing music. This album is another fine exmple of her thinking. I don't think she ever received the fame she deserved...as a musician or as a composer.
Pisces waltzes in a dream..........1999-09-15
A delightful collection of "miniatures" in which Mary Lou Williams - not an expert at astrology - accurately captures certain attributes of the various signs by observing them in people she knew & making them into music, much as Virgil Thomson did in his Portraits. Taurus plods along heavily. Pisces waltzes in a dream. Scorpio is sneaky. Cancer is a Debussyan moon. Fun for fans of jazz piano & maybe more than that for the astrologically-inclined. Sound quality is rough, to say the least, but it's like peeking at Mary Lou's private journal.
