Amazing, back to the roots.......2007-06-16
Amazing album that really goes back to the Nasty Little Thoughts album (their best selling album) and really just blows you away song after song. This album, and this band, is definitely under appreciated despite being critically acclaimed. A definite buy.

They may seem like the latest in an endless line of overnight sensations, but San Francisco foursome Stroke 9 have been playing together for over 10 years. They formed the group as a high-school senior project, and jammin' 'n' groovin' since their teens has given Stroke 9 the kind of musical chemistry many outfits only dream of. Theirs is a story similar to that of teen-sensation-turned-multiplatinum rock band Live, and appropriately, Stroke 9 worked with Live producer (and ex-Talking Heads keyboardist) Jerry Harrison on their debut album, Nasty Little Thoughts. An upbeat collection of strummy rockers and jangly ballads, the album combines the earnestness of a band like R.E.M. with the hook-laden songcraft of acts like the Connells and the Counting Crows. Luke Esterkyn's vocals are consistently emotional without sacrificing melody, and guitarist John McDermott coaxes a rainbow of textures and tones from his instrument without straying from the simple core rhythms of the songs. But most importantly, Stroke 9's energetic pop is utterly infectious, making songs like "City Life" and "Little Black Backpack" echo through your head long after you click off the CD player. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Album.......2007-01-04
If you like alternative rock, this album is for you. The lyrics and the music just flow wonderfully in the album, and though I do not believe it to be their best album to date, it is way up there on the list. There is quite a mix of styles, meaning not every song sounds exactly the same like most of the bands out there today. Not to discount those bands, I enjoy some of their music, but this album really has a richness to it that is lacking in much of today's music.
I am quite suprsied to find out how many people are listing these guys as one hit wonders or claiming they have disappeared. They are quite alive and have actually released two albums after this one, one of which is much better I believe, and are on the way to releasing a third. They also have many albums that proceed this one, so check them out as well.
One Hit Wonder.......2006-10-27
Well, for one hit wonders, this was a gem of a band. 'Little Black Back Pack' itself is worth five stars, but the other songs are great as well. A great buy if you are a Third Eye Blind fan.
FULL EFFORT! GREAT BAND!.......2005-08-06
i usually am more into old classic rock and roll but i picked this up used at a yard sale and didn't even have time to listen to it for like a year. i finally put it in and i realized how great they are!
this CD has great lyrics and everything you want out of a pop/hard rock band!
the only bad song was the last one.
buy this cd and you will not regret it!
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!.......2004-12-30
I just bought this CD in Dec. of 2004, almost six years after it came out. I always liked the songs that were on the radio but I never picked this little beauty up until now. I must say, I wasted 5 years of my life by not hearing this CD everyday. Every song on here is sweet. From little black back backpack to tail of the sun this is a disc that you can blast in the car through the whole trip and not have to skip a song. PICK IT UP!
I don't think you dabbed them, oh no, one-hit wonders????.......2004-10-27
They disappeard off the face of the earth after this raucous CD and you just wiped your ass to say what???? Wanna get away from mainstream hype, then this CD is the way to do it. After repeated listens, you beg, more???? Little Black Backpack. Sounds funny? A top 10 hit on Billboard's modern rock chart. A no-brainer for a follow-up, then bam }:-( Worth checkin out.

A Stroke of Genius Gerald LeVert.......2007-03-29
A must buy. Every cd Gerald has it awesome.
A bit weaker than usual but still effective.......2007-03-08
Gerald Levert returns with another CD but this one isn't as strong as Gerald can normally deliver. His voice is great and he still does the convincing pillow talk, but like his last few releases, the material isn't there. Too often he turns to R. Kelly-styled strip-club music way beyond his reach as Gerald is the grown & sexy lover man not some man trapped in the closet. Knock, Knock, Knock,Eyes and Ears and Keep It Warm are all cool but it's sultry duet with Tamia on the Carpenters,They Long to Be) Close to You is what makes the CD work for me.
Good service.......2007-02-20
the cd was used, it had a couple small scratches, but it plays very good. the case was cracked badly. I got very good service. I would use again.I got cd in good time also.
A Question about Wear It out #9.......2006-11-27
I was just reminscining on his songs. I remember this song I heard of his that I thought was special. You all know how Marvin Gaye uses all those distinct voices on some of his songs and they are all him. Well we all know he has been imitated on that most people that try don't even come close. They sound a hot mess. Well at the time I remember Beyonce had this song Speechless that tries to do what Marvin did it vocally sounds a mess. But, around the same time I heard Wear It Out (#9) it is one of the best contemporary songs vocally that can do what Marvin does.
Artistically respected.......2004-10-15
No doubt, Gerald has far exceeded expectations with this one and I'd go as far to say it's one of his best!
He's taken the risk of delving into a different market and has been successful. I totally feel where he went with this albulm and only hope others can open their mind to accept the change.
Very well done.

WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU SEE R&B AND FUNK.......2007-01-10
This is one of the best and most creative and musically stimulating albums in existence. If you're looking for something to move you, to make you think, and to make you feel music completely differently, YOU NEED PARLIAMENT. All I can say is try it, and if it isn't for you, YOU AREN'T READY YET!!
singing another song.......2003-06-17
I already have this I'm a huge p funk fan and love to hear unreleased material by the funk mob I wish they could have put a few more on here instead of one song that really cloners the family stone who was a good influence on p funk.
It's about funkin' time..........2003-05-03
a CD release of the Parliament classics with bonus material added. Granted a boxed set of The P-Funk would be heavy and expensive and wouldn't cover everything to everyones liking, so I guess these will do. Knowing that there is more music involved in each album project these ditties are chosen probably because of the completeness? of the songs on the 2 track master mixdown used to go to press back in the day. The remastering does sound better than the original first CD, which I thought was incredible then in the early 90's. If you have an ear, the analog warmth kicks 16bit digital in the @ss, but today's technology makes it o.k. and cleaner.
What's next P-Funk SACD's and/or DVD-Audio??
Up For The Down Stroke - alternate version and Testify - first album press version was featured on the Parliament 12in's CD, so that was no fun but the Singing Another Song was a treat for those who don't get to hear the bootlegs.
Worth it to hear everything re-mastered and Singing Another Song. Waiting on Dr.Funkenstein/Funkentelechy/Motor Booty Affair/Gloryhallastoopid/Trombipulation with "good" bonus stuff not rehashed 12in versions, are you?

Customer Reviews:
Stroke who?.......2006-09-20
To be honest, when I first got this album I thought it was an album by The Strokes. I had never heard of Stroke 9 before, but this CD totally blew me away. If you're a fan of acoustic guitar, you'll go absolutely crazy over their two part guitar harmonies. So very catchy. You'll have a really hard time getting this album out of your head. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on this album.
Brilliant.......2006-09-08
This mellow, catchy and sexy album is one of the best I've ever listened to. I admit I wasn't a Stroke 9 fan before (I didn't particularly like "Little Black Backpack"). However, this album pulled me right in. It is instantly "listen-able". I just got it yesterday and have listened to it 10 times already. A sidenote- I enjoy the version of the song mentioned above on this album- I think its a little more meloncholy than the radio version. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
A great CD.......2006-03-30
This is the best Stroke 9 cd yet. The songs are quite catchy and filled with some really talented guitar work. Buy, download, or in some way get this cd.
a cd every stroke 9 fan needs.......2006-03-13
If your a stroke 9 fan you probably know that their songs are driven by amazing lyrics, and thats why this cd is as good as it is. It strips down the songs to an acoustic atmosphere that promotes the lyrics that much more. If you liked Nasty Little Thoughts or Rip It Off, then you would like this cd since most of the songs come from those albums. I dont understand how someone could say no to acoustic versions of "letters" or "vacuum bag" or "tear me in two" and also a piano version of "california" which i think is better then the original version.

Album Description
Since 1989, this San Francisco band has recorded five albums and toured the US, Canada, and Europe extensively. Fueled by the commercial success of their hit song, "Little Black Backpack", their third album, "Nasty Little Thoughts" went gold in 2000. The single "Kick Some Ass" from their fourth release, "Rip It Off" was featured in the movie "Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back". The group also had songs in other movies and TV shows including "Ed TV", "Scrubs", "Malcolm In The Middle", and "West Wing". Look for them on tour this fall in support of their new self-produced album, "All In".
Customer Reviews:
Not a Rumor?.......2005-10-20
I heard the Eric Stock likes to enjoy himself with animals... from his cousin. The album is decent. Not as good as Nasty Little Thoughts, which I viewed as by far their best album.
theyre just trying new things.......2005-08-16
ok, so yes this new album is very different from nasty little thoughts and rip it off, but i frankly admire the fact that they dont get stuck in one place. each of their albums are so unique and offer something different. i really respect the fact that they are willing to go out on a limb and try something new. yes, i dont think i can listen to this album all the way through like the past two, but "how am i gonna know","stop saying goodbye" and "parte" keep up the fun to listen to poppy sound while "runaway" and "rod beck" bring in a new flavor (esp. that solo in rod beck. sweet) so i say job well done stroke 9 and keep experimenting. i look forward to your next achievement.
Not the best but still good.......2005-06-09
Stroke 9 has become one of my favorite bands. I have close to 300 CD's and Nasty Little Thoughts and Rip It Off are still picked first for a spin! This is the third album and the first of theirs that has a few songs on it that I skip over. But it's still a great CD and this is still a great band. For those of you who are looking for carbon copies of NLT, this isn't it and that's a good thing. This band is constantly evolving and trying new things and you can't help but respect that. So many bands just play the same thing over and over again and they get boring really fast! Abandon Confusion is my favorite track on this CD. If you don't have any Stroke 9 CDS, start with Nasty Little Thoughts or Rip it Off (my personal favorite of the three), but still keep this one in mind. It's a keeper!
Give it a Chance.......2005-03-14
When I first bought this, I was like many of the other reviewers and thought it was pretty lame. However, upon repeated listenings, I have to say this is a pretty good record. Not as good as " Nasty Little Thoughts" or "Rip It Off" but still worth it for fans. While its obvious they were shooting to get some radio air play with a poppier sound there some pretty clever songs. I really enjoy "Abandon Confusion" & Faux Gucci Girl." So give it a few listenings and enjoy!
Evolving creativity.......2005-02-09
I for one was looking forward to another Stroke 9 CD everytime I logged onto Amazon, and ordered "All In" on faith that it would deliver as the band's first two releases had. After reading a few customer reviews complaining that this latest CD isn't just like the others that came before it I felt compelled to put my two cents in. I will agree that "All In" varies from what I had come accustomed to hearing from these guys, but then again, so was "Rip It Off" from "Nasty Little Thoughts". Now that I've been playing this one for a while I can tell you that it DOES deliver. My personal favorites for those interested are: "Stop Saying Goodbye", "Set You Free", "How Am I Going To Know", "Words to Live By" and "Part'e" (in that order). The lyrics have ingrained themselves in my memory already - and that is what Stoke 9 cnmtinues to produce: Fun songs that get right into us. Never mind the "unfamiliar" arrangements -- they are only unfamilier because it is NEW. Do we really want carbon-copy re-hashes of what is already out there? Ugh! I hope not. Being in my thirties I have lived through a few different rock trends and have heard the same complaints given to any band (Rush and Yes are perfect examples) that has had any longevity: "It's not their sound" -- what is? Stroke 9 is evolving, and so is their creativity. I look forward to seeing where it goes in the future. The music that is coming out today seems to hold more promise than that of when I was growing up. Bands such as Third Eye Blind, Eve 6 and yes Stroke 9 are bands I am looking at to become long-lived and prolific artists. And if I'm wrong, well, I'll watch to see the evolution of where the individual players go. (FYI - Former 3EB guitarist/songwriter Kevin Cadogan puts his had in on "Set You Free") Try it, you'll like it. -Bob

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2002-07-30
A wonderful compilation of this group's work. Listening to this CD is a lot like listening to a greatest hits package by Depeche Mode. Any fan of Depeche Mode can obviously hear the same style of music in Camouflage. All of the band's greatest songs are here though it is not the same as listening to the original albums in which are far better. Discard the track Jealousy in which Camouflage sems to have made the same mistake as Depeche Mode in Songs of Faith and Devotion by utilizing guitars. It didn't work for Depeche Mode, it's not going to work for Camouflage. The other track to stay away from is Waiting. That track is a big [loss] and does not belong on this compilation of best work by Camouflage. Other than that, this CD is pleasing to the ear.
Buy the originals!.......2002-04-14
Camouflage are too good a group to buy a Greatest Hits album from.
Most of the tracks are strong: stylistically, Camouflage are similar to Depeche Mode. All the more reason to buy the original albums and appreciate the holistic context in which they were first written. Why have one's listening spoiled by a record company's decisions?
GR8 ALBUM.......2001-10-10
This is one of the best band of the 80's. I really like their works such as The Great Commandment, Love is a Shield, Neighbours, Strangers Thoughts among others. I used to mix their songs with Red Flags' Russian Radio & If I Ever coz they have the same beat. I've been looking for this band for so long & thank God Amazon.com has it. This album is going in to my collection.
95% perfect....Some good stuff missing!.......2001-09-10
I love camouflage, for the last 10 years, they been one of the best synth-pop creators every album they put out is a different
,sometimes rough(meanwhile),and sometimes sub-real(voices & images)but there always full of stories & fantasy,i dont't have
a favorite album, i love everyone of them in different ways, but
i do agree with kevhamilton this album needs"this smiling face"
(the single version only available in the 12'inch vinyl),and also
more!more!..remixes,....william orbit's mix is deliciously,huntingly a masterpiece,..i gess we will "waiting,waiting,waiting,waiting"...for the remix album ....
love you guys...........
my chime in.......2000-03-05
I just wanted to add, that, even with being a Camouflage completist, this compilation is useful to the average fan, in that, it contains many SINGLE mixes of the songs, different to the album versions. And the packaging and artwork is quite nice too. Woulda been nice to have a new track featured on here, but, all the important songs are here. I think every Camouflage fan has their favorites though, so if your fave is missing, dont feel alone.

San Francisco's Stroke 9 took a worrying three years to follow up its major-label debut, Nasty Little Thoughts. But the band sounds thoroughly unaffected on the follow-up. Rip It Off is bristling with delirious rock riffs, whopping hooks, and the same tongue-in-cheek attitude that propelled their last hit, "Little Black Backpack," onto the modern-rock charts. Balancing the self-effacing humor of Blink-182 with the earnestness of Counting Crows, the band blazes through easily digestible fare like "Kick Some Ass" ("I wanna kick some ass, but I'm really just a sensitive artist") and "We Were Wrong" ("For me you were so wrong / I'd only come over to get it on") as if bent on dethroning hometown arena-rock champs Third Eye Blind. --Aidin Vaziri

Great Addition to Any Collection.......2007-01-04
After jumping on the Stroke9 bandwagon when Nasty Little Thougts hit it big, I completly lost it and bought all of their previous albums. Unfortunately for them, their popularity did not translate into this album, but I was there waiting for it when it was released. I must agree with some of the reviews on here, this album really takes a little effort to get into, but once you finally get to the point where you realize this album is really amazing, you will understand.
Just like many of their previous albums, this album has a lot of interesting lyrics and different styles, instead of each song sounding as if they took the previous once and mixed up the chords. Generally, I just but this and Nasty Little Thoughts on shuffle together and drift away.
Enjoy the album!
Best Stroke 9 CD!.......2005-06-09
This is my favorite Stroke 9 CD! I can listen to it over and over again! THe beauty of Stroke 9 is that you are not going to get the same music over and over from them. They are not afraid to go out on a limb and try something new with each CD. My favorites on this album are Vaccuum Bag, We Were Wrong, and 100 Girls. I put this in and just want to sing along as loud as I can! This band is one of the most underrated bands around and should really be getting a lot more air time.
I've come to love it.......2005-05-14
The first time I listened to this album, I hated it. I was ready to write a scathing review. Nasty Little Thoughts is one of my all-time favorite albums. When I attended a Stroke 9 concert in SF shortly after the band hit it big, I was blown away by the enthusiasm of the crowd. It was the first and only time that I have heard a crowd so excited about every song that I could barely hear Luke at all because the crowd's voices were singing along and drowning him out. That album was the kind of music that made you want to get up and move and just have fun.
I hadn't listened to Nasty Little Thoughts for a couple of years. So when I popped Rip It Off into my CD player, I mostly had just a memory of how fun and exciting the first album was and I'm sure I expected this 2nd album to be the same. And it really wasn't.
I agree with the other reviewers that some of the lyrics are horrible. I'm one who really pays attention to the words and if they are badly written, it can ruin the song for me. There are a few more songs on this album that just missed the mark completely for my taste. I was really pretty disappointed with the CD the first time I heard it. When I listened to Nasty Little Thoughts again right afterwards, it amazed me how much better that first album was.
But then I listened to Rip It Off again and you know, it wasn't so bad the second time around. I've since heard it over 15 times and I've grown quite fond of it. Some songs I cannot get out of my head at all. Of course, I still skip a few songs, but overall, this isn't the terrible CD that I thought it was the first time around. While it doesn't have as much of the tongue-in-cheek irreverence that Nasty Little Thoughts had, it does still have some (like "Kick Some Ass").
On the whole though, I think this second album is a little more mature. The music and the subject matter. And I think once I came to appreciate it on its own rather than as merely a comparison to Nasty Little Thoughts, I enjoyed it a lot more. While it doesn't make me want to just flat out kick up my heels and rock around the living room oblivious to the fact that I can't dance like Nasty Little Thoughts did (with the exception of "Kick Some Ass"), it does have a much wider range of emotions. "Do It Again" is an incredibly (INCREDIBLY I SAY!)sexy song, and "California" is an utterly beautiful ballad. I am reminded somewhat of Better than Ezra, another one of my all-time favorite bands, when I hear some of these songs.
Despite my initial aversion to this album, I know I will be listening to it over and over and over and over again.
Such an awesome record!.......2004-12-10
I bought this cd the day it came out 2 years ago, and decided to write a review for it now because it is still frequently in my cd player! I think this is one of the most pop/rock albums of all time! All the songs make you want to rock out!
The standout songs are "Latest Disaster", "Vaccuum Bag", "We Were Wrong" and the much overlooked and never played in concert "California". The entire cd rocks though! If you have to buy only one Stroke 9 cd, this is the ultimate one!
Best. Album. Ever........2004-10-31
At first, I thought it was a sophomore slump record. Wrong! Let it grow on you. First listen, one track appealed to me "Vacuum bag" a song with the hit potential of "The Reason". I listened more and now I feel this is the best album I own. Buy it, listen to it over & over and then you'll feel the way i do about it.

Casual of pace, endlessly nuanced and often elegiac in tone, the game of golf is hardly the stuff of sure-fire Hollywood box office. Writer-director Rowdy Herrington's biopic of legendary links boy-phenom Bobby Jones (who retired at 28) turns instead on the inner demons and driving compulsion that made Jones arguably the greatest golfer in history. This interior-out approach requires a deft hand in scoring, and veteran James Horner imbues his cues here with a graceful, impressionistic restraint that recalls some of Rachel Portman's similarly shaded work. The composer's musical motif for Jones is a rising melodic figure for orchestra that shines with courage and resolve, one Horner returns to frequently in a score that manages to fuse traditional ethnic motifs with a modernist's pastoralism, traditional scoring foundations with contemporary pop vibrancy. The opening "St. Andrews" immediately sets the dramatic tone, interweaving Horner's main theme with fiddle and pennywistle flourishes, all the while stirring up a decidedly brooding undercurrent. "Destined for Greatness" weaves the ethnic touches into a rich interplay of themes powered by a Vangelis-like rhthymic urgency, while "A Win, Finally!" marches them proudly front and center. Music for most sports dramas rises to thunderous crescendos in their moments of ultimate triumph, but the triptych of cues that close this one find Horner digging ever deeper into Jones' complex soul with fragile, introspective music that serves as a tender, bittersweet elegy for the golfing great. --Jerry McCulley

Great soundtrack.......2006-02-27
To the guy who said that James Horner plagiarizes, how can he when he is using his own music/scores from other films? I don't mind that Horner using some of the same music from his other movie scores, he is still infusing new music with old. I thought this soundtrack was great! Went well with the movie.
3.5 Stars for Bobby Jones.......2006-01-31
We all know James Horner self-plagarizes. That's a truth that not only his critics and fans admit to, but Horner himself. With Bobby Jones, Horner outdoes himself in terms of plagarizing - there are moments in the score that are literally (no, I mean it, literally) note-for-note the Freedom theme to Braveheart.
So that begs the question - is that a bad thing? Depends on how you see it. I loved the Braveheart score, but I liked this one too. Horner's plagarism is something you have to deal with when you buy one of his albums - like he said, it's his music, and if he wants to reuse themes, I guess he has the right to do so. What needs to be addressed is no longer how much he plagarizes, but if the music is any good and serves the film. This is good film music. It's occasionally moving and powerful, as well as fun and skippy (the Scottish bagpipes are back in full throttle here).
Ultimately, it's up to you and your ability to deal with Horner. This is a competent score from him that sometimes becomes a really enjoyable listen (it doesn't quite reach Braveheart territory because of a lack of extremely innovative material), but if you know the Braveheart score by heart, this one may play a bit like a flashback.
cheers

SPELLBINDING!.......2004-05-17
This music complements the motion picture like a glove. From the awkward strings in the scene in which young Bobby is just learning the game, to the stirring percussion sounds as Bobby begins to turn the tide and starts to win championships, this music cradles the movie from start to finish! The somber notes during the first St. Andrews championship where Bobby is given "a trashing" by the old golf course are absolutely perfect. This musical score mirrors the champion's life and emotional turmoil. Like the film itself, it is a masterpiece and a class act! Kudos to James Horner.
James Horner - Stroke of Sameness.......2004-05-12
I am a big fan of James Horner's scores and to be honest I was really looking forward to hearing this score and Troy (both due out on the same day!). I bought Bobby Jones first because I haven't seen the movie and I really wanted to hear Horner's take on scoring a golf movie. Sadly I am a little dissapointed with the score, mostly because the main theme is exactly like a secondary theme from Braveheart. Almost note for note! I know Honer tends to repeat himself many times in his scores but I thought he would he able to come up with a different theme for Bobby Jones and not just a rehash of one of his most famous scores. There are some good tracks in the score but it never really takes off into some grand theme and I haven't found myself getting caught up in the music. This will be one of the Horner scores that will grow on me and I like it but was just a little dissapointed. Hopefully Troy will be better...
