5 out of 5 stars Very Satisfying, Stimulating Listening! .......2007-06-04

Cooman clearly knows how to write music that is challenging but also accessible to the ear and satisfying. The piano concerto is playful, the sonata is melodic and as I listen to the symphonies, I can hear the "love and rain" and the spiritual heart of the Ave Maria. If you want to enjoy classical music from a truly gifted contemporary composer, I recommend this CD.I'm glad I have it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb, expansive music from contemporary composer.......2007-05-24

I am going to write this review from the simply enjoyment point of view,
w/o any analysis of the musical forms, etc, and that isn't my specialty
anyway.

I like to try out CD's from Naxos, including modern composers. Since the
prices are so reasonable, even if the newer music isn't the greatest,
all their CD's are worth at least a few listens. That's one of the great things
about Naxos, small risk for generally high quality. Thus I knew
nothing about this composer other than the high praise I read in the
newspaper from the company that has listings from Naxos and other labels.

This CD turned out to be a spectacular winner. Mr. Cooman can really
compose some excellent, highly listenable music, and on this
CD there is an amazing variety of featured instruments (all composed for
very well in my opinion): flute, piano, violin and organ twice, strings
elsewhere, etc. And you don't hear what you would expect given the types
of compositions on the CD. Yes, there are (2) symphonies, a piano
concerto, a partita, a concerto for violin and organ, and more, but what
makes this CD so enjoyable is that it flows so beautifully, as if it were
a concept work, whatever the types of compositions (I have not read the
liner notes to see if that was the intention).

If you like classical music, I'd say get this CD immediately!

The haunting, ethereal tone of the glass armonica, which was invented by Ben Franklin in 1761, was said to drive its players insane. On Cristal, Dennis James risks madness as he surveys three centuries of music composed for Franklin's armonica, and two other glass instruments called the seraphim and the cristal baschet. Most of the selections date from the armonica's first period of popularity, which started in the late 1700s and ended in the 1830s, and include compositions by Hasse, Apell, Scmittbauer, a composer who also made armonicas, and Mozart, who composed the Adagio and Rondo for armonica just weeks before he died. James is joined on the Mozart piece by the Emerson String Quartet, who also play on Garry Eister's Quintet for Glass and Strings, one of the few 20th century pieces written for armonica. Cristal was produced by Linda Rondstadt, who also sings a duet with Ruth Ann Swenson on a lovely arrangement of Fauré's Pavane. Ronstadt wisely avoids trying to turn this into a pop crossover and instead lets the fragile beauty of the music speak for itself. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars A great addition to your library.......2006-08-22

While I have enjoyed other performers renditions of some of the songs (Mozart K. 356, K 617; Apell 'Non temere alme immortale') as performed by Thomas Bloch, there are some songs on this album that make it worth it. The arrangement of Fauré's Pavane Op. 50 is amazing. That track alone is worth buying the album. In addition Quintet for Glass and Strings by Garry Eister is a very good set. If you are new to glass harmonica I would recommend Thomas Bloch's album entitled 'Glass Harmonica' under the Naxos label.

    1 out of 5 stars Heartbreaker.......2004-11-10

So let's see. Dennis James has spent years of his life recreating Ben Franklin's true glass armonica and making himself a virtuoso of the instrument.

The label is Sony, the producer is Linda Ronstadt and the Emerson Quartet are the session men.

No expense, no trouble, no love has been spared.

Except that the disc, while so beautiful, is utterly, utterly useless.

Instead of Mozart's specified accompaniment of FLUTE, OBOE, VIOLA, CELLO in K617, we get a fricking STRING QUARTET !!

    HELLO ? It's a GLASS ARMONICA !

    ETHEREAL, YES ?
    DELICATE, YES ?

DON'T YOU THINK THAT JUST MAYBE WOLFIE MIGHT HAVE GOT IT RIGHT ?!
DON'T YOU THINK THAT JUST MAYBE IT'S HIS CALL ANYWAY ?!

Are oboes and flutes suddenly endangered species ?

Is everyone associated with the project quite insane ?

Hmm. I may be onto something there. They do say the instrument drove its hearers mad back in the eighteenth century...

    5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this.......2004-06-02

I wasn't sure what to expect. The novelty of this instrument passed quickly. And soon I was absorbed by the music. "Glass Music," as they call it, adds an etheral quality to these classical pieces. But it doesn't detract. And the accompaniment is top notch. My favorite parts were the guest vocalists. And Linda Ronstadt, who has already proven herself in the classical world, blends in effortlessly with her voice. You don't stop and think, "Oh my goodness. That's Linda Ronstadt singing." She sounds like any of the other pros on the album. And could possibly be segue-ing into a comfortable classical career from here (hasn't that always been her destiny?) Let me wrap up and say that I was enchanted by this music. (And Dennis James, please record more.)

    5 out of 5 stars Celestial sound.......2002-03-21

You must hear this CD to believe it. The glass armonica and other glass instruments produce, in the hands of Dennis James, an otherworldly resonance that seems almost mesmerizing. Of particular note are Garry Eister's "Quintet for Glass & Strings" and his exquisite arrangement of Faure's "Pavane." Though classical clear through, this CD should appeal to fans of Ronstandt as well as Faure.

2 out of 5 stars Fairly commonplace selection.......1999-06-15

Howard Arman has a respectable but ultimately not very exciting approach to this music of this period. Both his Schelle Christmas Story (on Capriccio) and Schutz Exequien (on Berlin) are well played and characterised by imaginative programming, but lack the drama that someone like Gardiner or McCreesh can instill. This disc, I'm afraid, is a fairly pedestrian trawl through equally well trodden pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, the sprightly, airy flute sonatas of Herr Telemann..........2005-12-04

Telemann wrote this music in 1727 and designated it for 2 transverse flutes or 2 violins, or 2 recorders. In this recording we here the 2 flutes version. I can't emphasize enough how exceptionally crisp and clear this recording is. Once again, the Naxos lable impresses me. When you have this CD playing, it's almost as if the American Baroque were in the room with you doing a live performance. As for the music, it's simply charming and delightful, especially if you love the sound of the flute. As typical of the Baroque chamber sonata, alot of these pieces follow a dance rhythm and develop with contrapuntal imitations and variations. But it is remarkable how varied each of these sonatas are, given the limitations of their composition. Few Baroque composers could create such music and still have each movement sound so fresh and different. Bach and Vivaldi's flute sonatas are sublime, but these of Telemann are not to be overlooked. If you're looking for a beginning recording of Telemann's Op. 2 start here. Can't beat the price either for 68 minutes of beautiful flute duets : )

5 out of 5 stars Singing from the heart: The Choir of Hard Knocks.......2007-06-30

The Choir of Hard Knocks is a group of homeless and disadvantaged people in Australia who have been singing together since September 2006.

Their voices (both collectively and individually) are simply awesome and this album is a tribute to them. The founding director of the choir is Jonathon Welch, and Jimmy Barnes has been a great supporter.

Some of the tracks (in particular 'Hallelujah' and 'Amazing Grace') are inspiring.

Recommended to all who believe in the power of song. The royalties from the sale of this CD keep the choir singing!

      5 out of 5 stars good timing.......2007-01-19

this cd was a christmas gift so i never listened to it but it arrived way earlier than i was promised so i am happy

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-12-24

Excellent music, excellently orchestrated. Some of the pieces are done a capella. The review above says something about Go Tell it On the Mountain being a hand-clapping little ditty. There is no hand clapping in this CD. It is all classically sung. Go Tell it on the Mountain *is* a classic Christmas tune, if not Catholic. And I have sung it at a Catholic mass. It is not illegal to sing tunes from other Christian religions. These are wonderful renditions of classic Christmas carols directed by Richard Proulx.

3 out of 5 stars Short of Perfect.......2005-09-17

The CD is titled Catholic Christms Classics with soul inspiring pieces such as "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming", "Puer natus in Bethlehem", "Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella", "Gabriel's Message", "The Virgin's Slumber Song", and the most moving rendition of "Night of Silence/Silent Night" that I have ever heard.

However, the addition of "Go Tell it on the Mountain" was far from appropriate for a CD entitled "Catholic Christmas Classics". First of all the tune is not a Classic. Second, it is not Catholic. The hand clappin' little ditty is so far out of place among these great works that you will find yourself skipping it over and over again. The awe and wonder of the Savior's Birth is captured in the other pieces and creates an Almost Perfect Catholic Christmas CD.

I checked this out from my local library. Needless to say, I am elated I did not buy it. How is that people actually receive record deals to record this kind of, uh, noise???

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas, great CD.......2006-03-29

I recently witnessed Todd Reynolds perform at my school. It was amazing. While this type of music may not be for everyone, Todd Reynolds, Luke DuBois, and many others have continued to push ahead experimenting and creating new pieces. It might be a little easier to understand and appreciated the music on this cd if these men are studied a little. For instance, Todd Reynolds is an incredibly talented violinist who could play all the greatest concertos, but he wanted to find his own niche in the music world, quoting his exact words, "Bach and Mozart will be fine without me."

Out of all the pieces on this Cd, "Light is Calling" is the one I enjoy the most. You can put this cd in your computer and it will play a video that this piece accompianies. I feel that it is important to know a little history about this film. Luke Bill Morrison took a black and white film on decaying acetate and, knowing that it would burn up from the heat of the projector, decided to record while it played (and burned). Todd Reynolds composed a piece that is beautiful and fits the film well. Together these men have made new art out of an old piece of art. To me, this film seems like a memory. I would recommend this to anyone who has an interest.

4 out of 5 stars Visceral Minimalism at Last.......2005-09-29

I've never been a big fan of minimalist expressions in classical music. Composers like LaMonte Young and Terry Riley seem completely preoccupied with their "theory" rather than the music itself. As if the obesity of the concept nudges aesthetics out of the score. Surprisingly, a whole generation of talented young composers inspired by the minimalists have been making really beautiful, economical music. Michael Gordon and others seem determined not to make the same boring mistakes. And what's really great about Michael Gordon's Light Is Calling is that he doesn't seem to be trying to subvert any antiquated ideas about music, he's just trying to affect you.

The album begins with a rhythm and strings piece, "Tinge." Some computer arranged industrial rhythms are quickly followed by a panicky melody, punctuated by nod-your-head-here staccato bursts. "My Frig" is a relatively cheery song. Gordon uses a descending violin slide for texture, very different from his Decasia symphony. "Receiver" sounds at times like an homage to Tubeway Army, followed by "Idle" which sounds something like Henry Flynt's avant-fiddle sampled into a Coil beat. The title track is beautiful, with some quiet bubbling samples giving way to a simple, somber violin solo. The song builds a bit but maintains it's simplicity, finally careening into itself and sliding apart. The CD also features a short movie set to this song. I'm assuming it's made by Bill Morrison, it features decaying footage of a couple dancing, much like Decasia.

My only complaint is the electronic/computer aspect. It's mostly pretty boring stuff, and it doesn't mesh well with the rest of the arrangements. Most of, but not all the beats sound like stock sounds on an outdated program. I should say it's not all bad, I like the result on "Instrumental" for instance. But electronica was invented by composers, you'd think they'd be making more interesting stuff by now. It's symptomatic of most of the contemporary composers mixing electronic and classical. The weird thing is, they all seem to think they're doing really great new stuff with rhythm. I picture these guys sitting around listening to UFOrb all day and talking about how to "deconstruct the electro-classical dichotomy."

Ostensibly, Gordon is one of these academics who feels just as at home in the underground scene as he does in the academy. With the exception of the intimacy of this record, that duality is unfortunately not well represented here. Actually, Decasia is a much better execution of this. Still, along with Max Richter's Blue Notebooks, Light Is Calling is one of the best collections of engaging, minimalist, contemporary classical music that I know of.
