This CD has four totally different types of pieces. The first is Schnittke's violin sonata and the second is his sonata (here called "suite") in the old style, but both are arranged for violin and chamber orchestra instead of violin and piano. The first is modern yet wholly accessible; the second sounds closer to Haydn than to any other composer. When I first heard it for violin and piano, my reaction was that it was a waste of time -- if I wanted to hear Haydn I could listen to Hadyn. A few more listenings, however, made me realize that it is a truly beautiful piece with gorgeous melodies, and seems to have subtle modern touches to it (which I cannot describe because I'm not a musician).

The third piece is "Five Fragments on Pictures by Hieronymus Bosch," which are best described as tone poems. One is for solo trombone and a couple have a tenor who sings beautifully.

The final piece is the highlight of the CD -- a 23 minute concerto for piano and strings. After several listenings, I think that it is my favorite work of Schnittke's. (I have about ten CDs of his music, which include no symphonies.) The concerto switches back and forth between being reminiscent of the "Moonlight Sonata" and of the incredibly exciting battle scene from Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky." The raucous parts are great fun.

I really liked the music but the CD does not play on anything other than regular cd players.
We have a system at home the can play mp3 cds and because of that it cannot play this one. It also does not work on DVD systems and computers.
So if you plan on playing this on any system that supports anything more than just plain music cds then think twice about buying this cd or any other cd from "Capriccio".
