5 out of 5 stars The best Stokowski Ninth.......2004-10-04

There are, to my knowledge, three versions of the Ninth with Stokowski at the podium: the thirties performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra, a later commercial version with the LSO (and, if memory serves, the same cast of soloists). This live performance, pre-dating the final version by a few years, found Stokowski in much the same mind about the music as he was in the thirties: in most important ways, that is to say, choices of tempo and phrasing, this live performance with the LSO is a dead ringer for the older performance (save for a brief patch in the first movement where he seems, for a moment, to lose concentration, (understandable under the circumstances, and even reassuring that we are hearing something live, and vital)), with the important difference that the tympany registers strongly (in the Philadelphia performance the drums sounded like they were being pounded with a baked potato). It is remarkable to think that the person conducting this performance was in his late eighties. (I should be so nimble of mind an dfree of spirit at that age, if I can reach it!)
However, this should not be interpreted as a discouragement from finding and purchasing the commercial recording. Stokowski managed, in his last years, to think and re-think, convincing, the first movement of the Ninth, and I, for one, would not want to be without either of these great performances.

5 out of 5 stars Stokowski offer a distinctive and must have view........2004-12-06

I agree with the previous review about the authenity. Stokowski did not intepret these works in a typical way. However, this is the value of this issue.

Falla here is overwhelming, tense, and extremely exciting. You cannot find any other Falla like this, even Stokowski's other recordings. Of course, you must forget it is a "Ballet" suite for a while. If you are a fan of Falla, this one definitely not the first recording you should buy, but you must buy this after you have couples of "El Amor Brujo" because it open a door of exploration.

Same as the Britten, Stokowski throw the sense of "Guide" away and treat the work as a orchestral masterpiece. Stokowski instill lots of vitality into this work and makes listener exciting again. Stokowski's intepretation is not the typical way showed by Britten himself, but I must say it is more interesting than the typical way.

The Beethoven is also an interesting one. Although the orchestra here is not better than The Philedelphia in 1927. But if you are a collector of Beethoven's 7th and afraid of historical recording. This one shows a sample of "Stokowski's Style".

I assume that all the Stokowski's fan already had this CD. So I recommend this CD to all the music lover who is interesting and already acquaint himself with one of these works. This one is a must have for collectors and distinctive enough for them not feel like wasting money on another similiar intepretation.

3 out of 5 stars not all there.......2003-03-30

The Britten is an unfortunate adventure for Stokowski. He sets out to give each variation his own individual character. Some are them are striking, but they stand as individual set-pieces, with little continuity between them. Sort of like a pearl necklace without a string. (I toyed with the idea of reprogramming the order to see if I could notice the difference.) His Falla is very thrilling and propulsive, although I wonder if any dancer could manage such tempi.
However, both the Britten and Falla are currently available of Music & Arts. Therefore, I would say that the decision to buy this disc stands or falls with the Beethoven. This Seventh reminds me very much of the 1927 Philadelphia, but a bit more mellow and with less exaggerated tempos (less driven in parts of the outer movements, less pronounced ritards in the finale). My enthusiasm is tempered by the fact that it is not all there, literally. 60% of the Scherzo is missing (instead of ABABA,you get ABA) and some repeated material in the finale is cut. The reason for this is known only to God and Stokowski, and it renders the performance problematic. For the most part I enjoyed the performance, but the missing material was jarring and threw me out of the moment.
