Lansky's music perches you, fully aware on the edges of the subconscious universe."

Folk Images is Lansky's latest Bridge CD...the instruments are guitar, violin, computer, occasional voice...the music - settings and arrangements of well-known folk songs, as well as original folk-like tunes. Lansky writes: "These pieces, arrangements and settings attempt to distill, emulate, and paraphrase some of the things I love best about folk music: jangling, frantic guitar sounds; melancholy tunes which have aged just enough to sound distant and odd; triumphant displays of ‘sold your soul to the devil' virtuosity and nostalgia for the ‘30s."

In Folk Images, funk, blues, new-age, and old-timey are given an aural face-lift. The result is a fresh view of familiar material - a new look at music that has stood the test of time.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

    The title to Kronos's most bleak album comes from a nearly 20- minute-long composition by American composer George Crumb that unfolds over 13 distinct parts. That ominous number only hints at the horror Crumb intended as an ode to the Vietnam War. War informs the whole CD: Shostakovich's Quartet No. 8, composed near the height of the Cold War, in 1960, was dedicated "to the victims of fascism and war." "Doom. A Sigh," by Istvan Marta, incorporates field recordings of two Romanian women singing personal laments of fallen friends and relatives; their grief is so intense as to render listening incredibly difficult. The original text to 16th-century composer Thomas Tallis's "Spem in Alium" (originally a 40-voice motet) recalled a biblical battle. And late American composer Charles Ives is heard singing (yes, singing) "They Are There!"--a ditty he wrote during the Great War and revisited for World War II; he's joined here by the Kronos, half a century after his death, in an act of studio magic that is ingenious if not musically stimulating. --Marc Weidenbaum

    This is music to think by as it engages the intellect.

    Black Angels has a menace which invites ideas and images into your mind.It will make you a little uncomfortable, but it will remain within you.

    Doom.A Sigh has a remarkarble story behind it and invokes an emotional response because the recorded voices carry echoes of something lost. It works a strange magic,drawing you in and giving a glimpse of a forgotten world that perhaps still exists within all of us, somewhere.

    The Shostakovich quartet ends this CD as Black Angels began it,completing a cycle, and you will be brought back to the point at which you started your journey but with a sense of something profound having occurred.

    This is a CD that will become part of who you are and the only question you need ask yourself is, are you brave enough to listen?

    Kronos' selections are excellent, if a bit eccentric, although I am less excited by the Tallis and Ives...arrangements. How well the main pieces are done is another matter, one being decent, the other somewhat lacking.

    Black Angels is a very exciting piece, as well as dark and disturbing. However I've played it, so it doesn't disturb me as much. Kronos is a bit fast sometimes, which can be a slight problem since the numerology is highly significant in this work. Pulling this piece off is not easy, as I can attest to. They do pretty well with it, but there is some "cheating" going on, as the DVD version reveals.

    One of the most interesting effects in the piece is the "consort of viols" sections, images 6 and 8, which are trios in which each player plays behind his/her left hand--basically turning the whole technique of bowing and fingering upside down. This is difficult to do, however it is not actually very hard if you practice it for a few minutes. I find it strange that Kronos actually does away with this amazing effect and plays it with normal technique using heavy practice mutes--no big deal for most listeners, but it does alter the sound. So, Kronos doesn't stick to the score completely.

    Anyway, the Shostakovich is the performance that is lacking. I like the Fitzwilliam cycle best, and their 8th is excellent, so you might get that one. If you don't mind the odd noises and variable sound the Borodin cycle is good too, but it is harder and harder to find, which is very sad indeed.

    I'm amazed that not one of the preceding reviewers mentioned the Brodsky recording of the Crumb, and only two of them seemed to know about the Concord, who were, I believe, the first to record it. The Brodsky is sharp, clean, accurate. The Kronos is none of these. Their performance is fast and sloppy. If you want to hear all the details you have to listen to the Concord or the Brodsky. (I've not heard the Cikada or the new Mode disc with members of the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic.) The Brodsky is a more exciting performance and a better recording than the Concord, plus they couple the Crumb with the Schubert 14th, which makes that famous cameo in "Dark Angels."

    That does not mean you shouldn't have this disc. I've heard many recordings of Shostakovich's music, the reverent "we're playing music by the great Soviet composer," the long-faced "we're playing music by a tortured soul," and the vastly superior "we're playing music." I'd put this Kronos performance in the latter category. Ironically, I like it because it's faster than most (and a little bit sloppy). Not so sloppy that details are blurred, though, and fast here means the piece is never allowed to get lugubrious, which too many performances of his music definitely are. (So many people seem unable to listen to music without thinking about nonmusical things, like politics or the composer's putative feelings, and so many performers of Shostakovich seem happy to accomodate them.)

    I don't know of any other performance of the eighth that makes the quotations so clear, either. Shostakovich threw in references to several of his own pieces in this quartet, the first and fifth symphonies, the first cello concerto, and most deliciously, the second trio. Kronos plays the quotes from the trio better than anyone else I've heard.

    4 out of 5 stars Not for everybody.......2005-05-27

    This is probably one of the least accessible Kronos albums I own, largely because of the Crumb piece. Personally, I consider it taxing but nonetheless worthwhile, but even devoted followers of the Kronos Quartet are likely to be turned off by the strident nature of the piece.

    The only other piece worth noting is the Marta composition, which has a strange otherworldly quality to it. All I can say about the Tallis "Spem In Alium" is that you would be much better served by listening to the original vocal arrangement. Kronos' version is simply rather boring by comparison. Likewise, Kronos' interpretation of the well-known Shostakovich 8th quartet reveals that while they are at the forefront of modern music (commissioning new works regularly), when it comes the standard repertoire oftentimes they simply do not measure up. There are more recordings than I can count of the Shostakovich 8th that are far superior --- take your pick.

    This is an album with as many misses as hits, and the hits are not exactly the most accessible music Kronos has recorded. Echoing another reviewer, it might be worth listening to this before purchasing it.

    I listened to this piece, Black Angels, and it definitely gave me the creeps. My wife begged me to take it off; I didn't, due to my morbid fascination. In retrospect, what was even creepier was the fact that I just spontaneously played it for the 1st and only time on the night of Sept. 10, 2001 . Coincidence? It's as if something inside of me had a premonition of the true horror of the following morning. Is this possible?

    The Nepalese trio Sur Sudha came together in the late 1980s for what amounts to a national-cultural mission. They set out to document the varieties of music in Nepal, and, given the remarkable contrasts in the landscape, it's no surprise that Sur Sudha's musical evocations span large distances. The musical highs and lows, though, are all kept within close reach of each other, reminding that Sur Sudha is a spare ensemble, employing only flute (Prem Rana Autari), sitar (Bijaya Vaidya), and tabla (Surendra Shrestha). The tunes here are compact, ranging from just over 5 to around 16 minutes, much in contrast to traditional Indian ragas, which can stretch to near eternity in their balance of drones and cyclic tabla rhythms. Like Indian music, these pieces feature each instrument closely entwined with the others, developing melodic units that spiral at a moderate and measured pace and featuring the sitar in a not-quite-drone role that sponges up the flute tones and wrings them back out in resonating solo segments. Listeners who enjoy standout solos as much as collective improvisations off raags (a musical scale similar to Indian ragas) will enjoy the work Sur Sudha has done to keep the band's direction balanced on an axis of expressive play. --Andrew Bartlett

    Hey, this is a great group and outstanding music. But before you buy this CD, make sure that the artist is actually seeing some of your money. To the present, as I understand it, Sur Sudha has never received a royalty check from any U.S. CD sales, except for the sales they themselves have made. Someone is burning these CDs and selling them as their own.

    An absolutely gorgeous, lushly melodic album. Fans of Indian classical may find this familiar -- yet oddly dissimilar. Although the instruments are similar -- sitar, tabla and flute -- the music is not quite as langourous and deliberative; this has a more pronounced melodic drive which may actually make it more accessible to Western ears. Wonderful stuff. Highly recommended!

    someone needs to tell both the amazon and dirty linen reviewers that the word "raag" is just a regional variant (and a more phonetically correct one at that) of the word "raga" - both reviews botch this fairly central point, and the linen one goes so far as to "sic" sur sudha's spelling... while on the topic, though, one might as well sic linen's spelling of "katmandu" -- sorry to pick nits - the album is indeed nicely performed and well recorded...

Pictures, encounters, scenery, atmosphere continually evoking harmony and tranquillity every hour of the day as I travelled winding roads through mountains, hills and over southern plains. This the music that evokes and expresses the images of the life and beauty, the people and their spirits that I sought, saw and seek to retain. I will listen to this music forever, swaying within its pulsating geographies and cultures and be uplifted and enthralled by the layers of rhythm. This is Nepal played and presented in sound and images that are direct and welcoming connections to the soul.

    I have had the Mercury Living version of Espana by Paul Paray.
    I couldn't dream of better then because you know Mercury's recording is famous for its sound quality. But now ,this one is even better. It's the Best!!! Those Spanish works are rich in colors ,so the mono recording wouldn't work. This one is as good as if not better than the Reiner series of Living Stereo.

    Ataulfo Argenta, had he not died tragically of carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 44 in 1958, would undoubtedly be known today as Spain's greatest conductor. Fortunately the powers that be at Decca realized that he was a massive talent in the making, and there are some outstanding stereo recordings to document this fact. This brilliant collection showcases Argenta conducting the London Symphony Orchestra in glowing 1957 stereo performances of Chabrier's "Espana," Rimsky-Korsakov's "Capriccio Espagnol," Granados' "Andaluza" and Moszkowski's "Spanish Dances, Book 1." The disc's final track, Debussy's "Images," also from '57, is with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Each of the performances is among the best I own, and they all have a certain swagger that brings me back to these versions for repeated listens while others sit idle on my CD shelves. Had only Argenta lived to a ripe old age....

    For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

    DANCE LIKE THE WIND presents works by eight African American composers from various generations, though they all emerged after the neo-classical period of non-discrimination. You'll hear loyalty to classic idioms like the spirituals and blues, but also elements of more recent genres like R&B, gospel and rap.       This is one of our all-time favorites. We like light contemporary Christian, old-fashioned gospel, and Irish/Celtic music - and this fits right in. The words are poetic and the music is relaxing. We've listened to it for years.

      McCall's album takes medieval sounds and creates an album with tremendous contemporary relevance. The songs are relaxing, beautiful, and the music speaks to mind and soul. The dance instructor at the college where I teach used "Tribesong" and "Images of Faith" for the dance troupe's Fall recital and the music was a big hit. My wife and I have been wearing this CD out for a year and still love it! I'll be first in line for McCall's next project.

      This is a beautiful and relaxing piece of music. If you like medieval music (a la Braveheart soundtrack) with simple percussion and woodwinds coupled with strong vocals, you will love this CD. The lyrics are creative, mystical, and evoke as the title states, images of faith.

        It amazes me that Livia Rév is not better known. These are performances that are not showy, not virtuosic, but RIGHT. And the repertoire is, of course, dear to the hearts of most of us.
