The 16 pieces in this collection must include nearly everyone's choices for the top-10 Verdi tenor arias. The range of emotions is enormous, from the lecherous flippancy of "Questa o quella" to the intense thirst for revenge in "Di quella pira" and the awed, idealistic love in "Celeste Aida." Domingo is not the only great tenor of his generation, but he is the most versatile (can you imagine Luciano Pavarotti in Lohengrin?) and imaginative. The best way to hear these arias is in the continuity of the operas for which they were written, but there is a lot to be said for a record that moves gracefully from one summit to another. --Joe McLellan

Very solid repertoire and great voice.......2007-07-19

I have a 2-CD set from EMI's "Great Tenors" series, and all of the "Heroes" selections are on it, plus other non-operatic literature. Corelli's voice is thrilling. Stylistically, I wish he would scoop less, i.e., occasionally just go nail a high note without sliding up into it. But that doesn't detract significantly. I think other tenors sing more smoothly, lyrically, and sometimes musically, but for any "heroic" role I can't imagine a more manly exciting tenor than Corelli. And he looked good in those parts too, tall and fit, unlike many other tenors.

I have been reading the rave reviews of this CD and listening to the samples and after doing so I am going to purchase another Corelli CD. I am never disappointed in his voice. He was and is the greatest tenor of all time - - - bar none. Once again, B R A V O Corelli!!

FRANCO CORELLI AT HIS BEST!.......2002-12-20

This compilation of moments from various complete opera studio recordings gives a very good idea about the legendary tenor Franco Corelli. Unfortunately most of the complete sets have one or two singers who are not ideal, therefore only a few opera recordings with Corelli can be recommended as first-choice recordings. EMI here has put together most of Corelli's best moments! He is heard in his glorious prime! Endless breath, electrifying high notes and power, power, power characterise his singing. My only objection is that his stentorian voice can sometimes become tiring. If only, however, we had such a tenor today! Of all the roles here, his Pollione and Manrico impressed me the most but everything else is also amazing. Bravo!

SPLENDID!!!.......2002-12-02

If you have not heard Franco Corelli, this cd is a good start. It gives a fine portrait of Mr.Corelli. It`s one of my most-played records ever. It's so exciting. But watch out! After listening to it, you can find many other tenors a little bit boring if you`re comparing. Of course Corelli had his faults he too and they are easy to find, but when you hear the thrilling sound of this abnormal tenorvoice, his brilliant boldly high notes, his intensity, they are very easy to ignore.
So if you`re looking for a different singer, buy this one and
you`re gonna be excited!

The Heroic Domingo.......2005-11-12

This is another collection of Verdi arias interpreted by the illustrious and vestaile Placido Domingo and released on the first-class RCA Gold Seal. These operatic tenor roles, more than any other, established Placido Domingo as a bright star in the opera firmament. He himself claimed that Verdi's operas did more for his career than any other composer's repertory. The album begins with two arias from Verdi's Trovatore. Manrico's "Di Quella Pira" is exquisitely sung and dramatically gratifying. Domingo's Manrico does not possess the heft and volume of Mario Del Monaco's portrayal. But Domingo was on a class of his own, a tenor who did not seek to be the loudest tenor in history. He focused on beauty and purity of voice as well as dramatic and emotional impact. His greatest Manrico on record is found on the RCA 1970 recording with Leontyne Price, Sherill Milnes and Fiorenza Cossotto. Manrico is a role that more than any other tenor except Franco Corelli who please me the most. Domingo singing Alfredo's aria "De Mie Bollenti Spiriti" from La Traviata is pure gold. His Alfredo is far by the sexiest and most elegant while at the same time being passionate and masculine. Verdi's less famous operas Luisa Miller and Simon Boccanegra contain lush tenor arias that Domingo delivers with nuance and colorful musical intelligence. His tenor aria from Un Ballo is simply gorgeous. "La Vita E Inferno" sung by Don Alvaro in La Forza Del Destino is yet another masterpiece of tenor reperotire and Domingo is captivating. You can find Domingo's full-length Forza on RCA Red Seal from the mid 70's starring Leontyne Price, Sherill Milnes and Fiorenza Cossotto once again. It is still said that Domingo's greatest Italian role was that of Otello. This is absolutely true. He sang Otello several times beginning in the late 70's. This is the one role that our versatile, irrepressible tenor feared! But he sang the role with a Shakespearean approach and his vocal technique was dark and dangerous, full of passion and intensity. Just listen to this when he sings "Ah! Mile Vite Gli Donasse Iddio!" and "Dio Mi Potevi Scagliar". Unlike other Otello's, like Del Monaco's, he does not rush into jealous madness right away and instead cooly and intellectually slips into a jealous obscession with convincing credibility. A lot depends on the interaction between the baritone singing Iago and the tenor singing Otello, fortunately Domingo was always paired with superb Iagos, notably those of Sherill Milnes and Justino Diaz. Yet another glorious Verdi role for Domingo was Don Carlo. He sang it both in its origianl French version and in the more popular Italian version. His Don Carlos is a true revelation. A perfect balance of lyrical and spinto ability and dramatic thrust. This is Domingo singing roles that are considered his best and every fan of Domingo must own this. Enough said.

Rare Verdian tenor singing!.......2004-03-19

Little can be said about one of the world's greatest tenors with a singing technique SO good, that allows him to tackle so many diverse and difficult roles even at an advanced age.

This is a compilation of moments mainly taken from his numerous Verdi studio recordings. It's quite representative of his strong and stylish singing considering that, in my opinion at least, his voice was made for the later Verdi tenor roles rather than the earlier, lyrical ones. He's a natural Radames, Don Carlo, Don Alvaro, Manrico, Rodolfo and a defenite Otello. The solo scenes heard here are taken from his first - and least dramatic - recording. The later recorded duet with Ricciarelli's deeply moving Desdemona is by far the best track of this cd! A ligter voice like Bergonzi's or Pavarotti's moves me more in Traviata, Rigoletto, Ballo and Vespri but Domingo sings nevertheless wonderfully.

A MUST for all Pavarotti and Opera lovers!.......1999-07-10

I am a die-hard Pavarotti fan and an emerging opera lover. This CD has many of the great opera arias and most are performed by Pavarotti. In my opinion, London Records has a hit with Pavarotti's Opera Made Easy series.Those familiar with opera and those just beginning to sample opera; those who like Pavarotti as well as those who love all opera will enjoy this CD and it's collection companions!

Highly Disappointing..........2007-04-08

I picked this CD up in the bookstore after listening to it. I'm a big fan of the powerful classics, such as Carmina Burana O Fortuna, and, of course, Verdi's Dies Irae. I already owned those two pieces as well as a few others when I purchased this album. I had figured if they were on it, it was going to be one impressive CD.

I knew something was wrong the moment I started listening to it. Like others have mentioned, the musicmanship is poor. It sounds rushed most of the time. Plus, I compared Massive Classic's versions of Verdi's Dies Irae to the version I already had, and no way do they stand up. One sounded professional, practiced, and powerful. The other, on this CD: wimpy, weak, and lacking.

This CD couldn't take the time to get the best performances of these classics. Don't waste your time listening to it. Find a different album--there are better ones. My suggestions is The Greatest Choral Show on Earth, which features performances from the world's best orchestras and choirs.

But MAN do I love this CD! It's fantastic. Most of the songs you've heard from various movies or television shows, and now they're finally all together. I love listening to it while I drive - I find that I don't scream at traffic as much.

Terrible recordings of great songs........2003-12-20

The song selecting is awesome, but the performances and recordings (or the remastering) are awful. The balance seems off (very tinny sound), and the musicianship is weak (Vivaldi's "Summer" sounds like eigth-notes!).

NOTE: this review is for my CD from the BMG music club. I don't know if the CDs are different from what Amazon sells.

Exciting and Inspiring! So good my uncle is keeping my CD after he 'borrowed' it, and I have to buy another copy. And I hope it comes soon! Fun to listen to during rush hour traffic!

Stepping to Stage Front.......2005-05-04

Sarah Connolly may be a well-known name in the UK but in the USA she has too infrequently performed for a wide audience to develop. That will most assuredly change with this release of this CD of arias and recitatives from four of Handel's operas - Alcina, Ariodante, Solomon, and Hercules.

Connolly's warm, rich, pliant mezzo soprano voice is balanced throughout her broad range and she uses it with great intelligence and a true concern for the passion and poignancy of the character portrayed. Her singing is straightforward, not that she does not embellish in the baroque tradition, but she refuses to ornament for the sake of ornamentation. If there is one aspect of Connolly's voice that is worrisome it is the wide vibrato that seeps into her singing when the declamations rise above forte. But that 'problem' is rarely significant on the opera stage; it seems to bolster the drama. Equally at home in trouser roles as well as heroines Connolly once again proves that Handel's works sung with this kind of commitment remain significantly viable contenders for the upper echelon of operas performed today.

Connolly is adroitly accompanied by Henry Christopher and The Symphony of Harmony and Invention, as superb ensemble of players as any in this repertoire! The tracks of instrumental sinfonias are as elegant and lovely as the vocal numbers. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, May 05

Excellent Handel Program.......2005-02-05

This is a wonderfully varied and well-thought-out recital of Handel's music for mezzo-soprano (or the castrato voice, in the case of many of these arias). The orchestral pieces are short but well-chosen, the playing is excellent, and Sarah Connolly is wonderful singer. Not the sublime territory of Lorraine Hunt or David Daniels, but close. Her performance of "Scherza Infida" from Ariodante is one of the best I've heard. The real treat on this recording is the monumental accompanied recitative from Hercules, "Where shall I fly?" a remarkably modern-sounding piece that deconstructs baroque musical conventions to a fare-thee-well. Highly recommended.

The Great Mentor.......1999-10-07

Tito Gobbi's renditions remain standards for many operas, from bubbling hilarious Figaro to devilish Iago. A great singing actor Gobbi made each role distinctly his own, his relatively light but incredibly vibrant and colorful baritone capable of sounding ardent or paternal. His Scarpia is quite possibly the best on record, he literally lives this demanding role and brings fateful sinister presence to the charater as no one else.

This disc shows why Kraus should be missed very much........1999-12-17

Alfredo Kraus isn't known as having a particularly beautiful voice. Instead he is singled out as being elegant. He is indeed elegant. Before listening to this disc I never realized how much ring his voice had and yes it is rather beautiful. Most if not all of the selections here are from full length recordings. The French selections are outstanding. Its hard to imagine a better interpretation (except for the Fille du Regiment aria- sorry, Pavarotti can't be beat there.) The Traviata cabaletta really sounds flat without the normal (interpolated I guess) ending on a high note. I wondered why Kraus would avoid it, but then I realized the conductor was Muti. The standout selection on this disc is A te, o cara from Puritani. Its absolutely incredible. Unfortunantly, that recording is no longer available at least in the U.S.
