A MUST BUY!!!.......2001-03-03
If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!
Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26
Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.
This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23
What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

The Palladian Ensemble--Pamela Thorby on recorder, Rachel Podger on violin, Susanne Heinrich on bass viol, William Carter on lute and guitar--have long championed the music of Nicola Matteis. On Held by the Ears, they dedicate an entire disc to the little-known Baroque composer. Matteis wrote beautiful, lively airs filled with weird touches (just check out the driving recorder part in "Aria Presto" or the oddball mood swings of "Aria ad imitatione della Trombetta") and plenty of long-forgotten duds, too. Of course, even the Palladians admit that much of Matteis's work is "doggerel," so they've wisely filled out this disc with Celtic works of the same vintage. The effect is great: we get Matteis's very best and traditional works of the same style ("The Lass of Peatie's Mill," "Scots Airs," "A New Tune"). The Palladians play it all impeccably well and true to Matteis's originals. A great, and fun, disc. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Playful, engaging and one heck of a good time!.......2002-11-28
The Palladian Ensemble's fun-filled interpretation of the music and world of Nicola Matteis, 18th century composer and virtuoso string player, is the most enjoyable I have heard to date. The Italian composer's own works are interspersed with delightfully arranged tunes from Scotland, where Matteis settled, composed and, for a time, prospered. The group's combination of recorder, violin, cello and theorbo/archlute/guitar is perfect for Baroque compositions-soaring fast and high, yet grounded with the delicacy and gravitas expected of chamber music. The whimsical ornamentation and dead-on intonation of Pamela Thorby's recorder playing is truly phenomenal, given the fickleness of the instrument in less talented hands. Violinist Rachel Podger's finesse and artistry are a perfectly match for Thorby, and the two whip through complex melodies and harmonies with exquisite glee. The cover photo for this CD shows the members of the Palladian Ensemble laughing and in motion, and I imagine this must have been their state while recording the album as well. I haven't had such fun listening to Baroque music in quite a while, and I can't help but grin every time I play this recording, which is frequently. For complimentary recordings of the music of Matteis, try two other releases by the Palladian Ensemble, "An Excess of Pleasure", and "A Choice Collection: Music of Purcell's London", each of which contain three Matteis compositions. Also, for the slightly richer sound of two violins above gamba, theorbo and Baroque guitar, try Chatham Baroque's "The Scotch Humour: Music of Nicola Matteis".

Customer Reviews:
Lackluster.......2001-08-22
Judging from his rapid climb to fame and riches, to say nothing of his decadent lifestyle, Nicola Matteis was perhaps the closest thing to a pop star the seventeenth-century ever knew. Born in Naples sometime around 1640, this "studpendious Violin Signor" (as one contemporary called him) crossed the channel to England about 1670, where his skill on the violin brought him to the attention of English connoisseurs, who, over the years, helped him grow rich. But wealth lead to decadence, and this man who was once though "fitt to be named with Corelli" slipped into oblivion.
A contemporary of Matteis reported that he would indulge in "flights of humour not to be express'd," and the diarist John Evelyn tells us that "he did wonders upon a note... he seemed to be spirited & plaied such ravishing things on a ground as astonish'd us all." I would hesitate, though, to mete out the same praise to the members of the Arcadian Academy, whose timid, lackluster performance here really detracts from the innate beauty and spirit of this music. The performers seem to me a little bored, and the latent charm of the music remains underdeveloped. For superior recordings of many of these pieces, I recommend the work of the Palladian Ensemble, whose clever and resourceful treatment of Mattheis's music somehow leaves much less to be desired.
very uplifting and entertaining.......2000-06-14
This recording is some of the most uplifting, entertaining, and beautiful violin music that I own. The Arcadian Academy plays this music outstandingly. This disc includes four suites and two sonatas. The suite in d minor stands out as one of my favorites. This suite, for me, is on par with some of the greatest music ever written for violin. The members of Academy play very nicely together under the direction of Nicholas McGegan. I look forward to hearing other recordings from this group.

Little Purcell, but Lots of Great Music.......2002-11-01
I first bought this disc on cassette, and promptly wore it out before getting the CD version. As a showcase of little-known English and Italian composers working in late 17th-century London, it's a real gem--bright trumpet playing, bold strings, and mostly bouncy melodies, some of which betray their origins as theatre pieces. The only Purcell on it, if you're looking, is a short (1 minute) Cibell that closes the disc. But forget Purcell for the moment and enjoy Nicola Matteis, Godfrey Keller, and all of the other obscure names who were certainly Purcell's contemporaries, and whose appearance here flesh out our understanding of what a truly great musical nation England was during the 17th century. My only complaint is that, since this is one of Hyperion's older releases, it is timed to fit on two vinyl sides--I would have been glad of another 20 minutes of this!

Customer Reviews:
A Triumph for Chatham Baroque.......2000-03-10
This is a first-rate recording of vastly entertaining music. The performances are passionate and committed, and Dorian has done its usual excellent job with the sound, liner notes, and cover art. I usually find this much solo violin hard to take, but not at the hands of Julie Andrijeski and Emily Davidson. I found myself wishing that this disc were longer than 58 minutes, which surely could have been managed in this age of the 80 minute CD. Nonetheless, if you are already a fan of Chatham Baroque or if your appetite for the music of Nicola Matteis has been whetted by the Palladian Ensemble's performances, you will want to own this disc as well.
Spritely rendition of Matteis.......2000-01-07
I first heard Matteis' music in the Palladian Ensemble's wonderful "Excess of Pleasure" album. Yet the Chatham Baroque rendition of the same pieces is, to my ear, even better. The playing is just a bit livelier, the tone a bit more energetic.
I've heard this album was recorded when the group found themselves unable to record the pieces they'd originally planned. That may account for the spontaneity.

Very Nice Snapshot of Musical Moment.......2006-01-22
'Italian Baroque Trumpet Music' performed by The Parley of Instruments is exactly the kind of recording Hyperion does so well, with expert performances by small groups focusing on a very specific style and period of music.
To those unfamiliar with The Parlay of Instruments, I should warn you that while the trumpet is the star, this is not all trumpet solo music. Nine (9) of the thirteen (13) ensemble members are playing a bowed instrument, one is playing a reed woodwind (bassoon), one is playing a harpsicord, and two are playing other wind instruments, a trombone and a theorbo.
None of the pieces are by well-known composers. I simply recognize none of the composers' names. No Vivaldi or Montiverdi here!
The primary historical interest of the pieces lie in the fact that they were composed when the trumpet was making the transition from being a musical court megaphone with no keys and tuned to a single octave to an instrument with keys which could span at least three different keys.
All the pieces are entirely enjoyable and well worth the time of anyone interested in some of the more remote corners of classical music.
