5 out of 5 stars Monster Imagery Through A Great Musical Score!.......2007-05-06

Mr. Skinner & Mr. Salter knew what they were doing when they wrote the scores to these now classic films. Ironically, at the time of production these films were considered "B" quality and even questionable as far as pushing the limits of the film censors of the day. That aside, the music on this CD is totally reflective of the action that takes place in film. Having studied the music of the classical masters, it's only logical that Mr. Skinner and Mr. Salter display the same creative genius as say Hector Berlioz did with his "Symphonie Fantastique". They definitely set the mood for the stormy nights with their obligatory lightning flashes, grave robbing, monsters stalking about and the inevitable villagers revenge. Every time that I listen to this CD, I can see in my mind's eye the film playing over and over. I use this CD in my screenwriting sessions as a source for inspiration in attempting to create something as horribly classic as these favorite characters are now today.

hey i love it but im an old horror movie fan , if you lov the clissic horrors you'll lov this , it realy is great , i love it ,

4 out of 5 stars Monster memories.......2001-07-05

Good Copy of orginal score. The Wolfman is the stronger of the tracks here though Son of Frankenstein is not in the same class as the music from The Bride of Frankenstein is still invokes great moments from the movie.Great for collectors even if they are not horror fans. The Wolfman tracks from the film are the first to be recorded and also includes music that was wrote but never used in the finished movie.Listening to the music from the DVD realeases of the films, you would find it hard pressed to tell the difference if any.

4 out of 5 stars Frightfully delicious musical excitement!.......2000-05-08

Yet again, Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg have reached into the featureless depths of classical-film score fragments (in worse shape than even some of the Dead Sea Scrolls) and masterfully re-created (almost from scratch) music not heard in 60 years or ever (due to film re-editing)! And how does it sound? Beautiful! Tingling! Magnificent! And darn right scary! You may prefer to listen with a friend or at least keep the lights on. To the numbers: 5 stars (out of 5) for music reconstruction/orchestration/ arrangement (courtesy of Mr. John Morgan, a true wizard of the art); 4.5 for sound quality (recording/mastering); 5 for conducting and orchestral performance (courtesy of Mr. William Stromberg); 4 for the documentation in the CD booklet (courtesy of Mr. Bill Whitaker); and 4 for the bonuses (more on this later). Salter and Skinner's music helped keep Universal Pictures from the edge of bankruptcy (a frequent near-death experience for the studio in the 30's and 40's) with atmospheric scores of tonality for the second wave of Universal horror films, circa 1940. No wonder Mr. Morgan found that the original scores were just about nonexistent (leaving the tedious process of "spotting" or listening to the film's sound track to try and parse out themes and cues). It seems that the composers barely had time to go to the rest room much less worry about preserving their film scores. Mr. Salter is quoted (in the CD booklet) as saying: "we worked under terrible pressure...the last two or three days before the recording (of a film score) we didn't leave the studio...we stayed in our clothes there for two or two and a half days." Now, about some of bonuses on this CD. The original studio orchestra had maybe 30 members; this CD has an ensemble 2-3 times as large. Also there are three (count 'em!) versions of the classical Universal fanfare, each at a sightly faster tempo. Bottom line: Buy and enjoy (but not in the dark!).

4 out of 5 stars AN UNDERESTIMATED BUT THRILLING RECITAL.......2005-11-24

Those who are used to the 1960's voice of la Callas will be taken aback when they listen to the first arias of this CD (you can compare it with the Hamburg recital she gave a couple of weeks later, when the voice was rather weak and unsteady) In this recital the voice is unusually firm and strong, the high notes are brilliant, full of light... This recital is just a miracle, is like listening to the Callas of the golden 1950's!! She rarely was in such a good shape. You will specially appreciate Oberon's "Ocean" (by far better than the studio version) and the Cenenterolla aria (full of grace and charm).
The sound quality is awfull, but it is definately a must for those who are interested in the evolution of Callas' voice.

5 out of 5 stars For fans of campy rock 'n roll and classic horror.......2006-10-21

I'll keep it short and just say that everything here is classic and the audio commercials are fabulous. It would get 6 stars out of 5 if it were a 2 c.d set because there are many more of these old "monster" hits in addition to many sequels. Buy this c.d. if you can find it. Our family starts playing it a lot throughout October and it just gets better every year. Steve Hoffman, top tier engineer, remastered the songs for this collection so that they sound great too.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Momus Alexander Morgus' theme is here too!!!.......2006-03-02

The previous reviewer is right and what made it special for me is the tribute song to Dr. Morgus! (www.morgus.com) Yep, it's by Frankie Ford, The Clowns (of Huey Piano Smith) and Dr. John!
Check out this CD < it's better than Halloween itself!!!

4 out of 5 stars Everything a Big Bad Wolf could want!.......2005-03-07

This is a compilation CD featuring monster or horror themed songs, with old radio commercials for horror movies in between the songs. What's cool about this CD is that it doesn't feature all the same "monster" songs that are on every other CD like this. True, it does have Bobby Pickett's "Monster Mash" and Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater", but most of the other songs are pretty obscure. "Haunted House" is here, but it isn't the familiar hit version by Jumpin' Gene Simmons, it's the original version by Johnny Fuller (which is admittedly inferior to the hit version, but it's nice to hear it). There are a lot of really cool songs here that you probably never heard before; like "Midnight Stroll", "Werewolf" and "The Green Slime". It's a kick hearing the old horror movie commercials, too! This would be a good CD to get for your Halloween party.
