For the Weill Fan Who Wants More of His Music.......2005-08-18

I just finished reviewing a new CD from Naxos that contains Weill's rarely heard two symphonies plus a suite fashioned from the music he wrote for a Broadway show (after he'd emigrated to the US in the wake of the Nazi horror) and it reminded me of this set that I have owned for twenty-five years in its LP form. On a whim I bought this mid-price 2CD version and was thrilled to reacquaint myself with the fascinating music contained herein. This is the Weill we know and love from 'Dreigroschenoper' and 'Mahagonny.' The other pieces included here, even including the violin concerto which was not so pleasing to the previous reviewer, are quintessential Weill. The Violin Concerto (interestingly for violin and wind instruments), frankly, is the one I like best, but I think all these performances could hardly be bettered. David Atherton leads a very alert bunch of musicians in the London Sinfonietta and they clearly really enjoy playing this music. And the recorded sound, from the early 1980s if I'm not mistaken, is clear as a bell and sounds absolutely modern.

This truly is not to be missed. It has been treasured in its earlier format by Weill lovers for a quarter century and will continue to be held in special regard by those in the know.

A Pleasant Surprise and a New Discovery.......2000-06-15

I was in the mood for a modern violin concerto recording, and glowing critical reviews of this set prompted me to purchase it. Scanning straight over to the concerto, and giving it a few minutes listening, I was almost immediately put off. Avant-garde it definitely sounded to these ears, whose taste in modern concertos leans more towards Barber or even Glass (very straightforward works, with immediately accessible lyricism). Weill's concerto, on the other hand, sounded simply wild and aimless, with no particular "big tune" or melody to it. Almost disgusted, I shelved the discs for a few days.

On a whim, though, I came back to it and listened to the rest from the beginning... tremendous! The Threepenny Suite can simply be described as "fun," with an incisiveness and "swing" not to be found elsewhere. My two other favorites, The Little Mahagonny and Happy End, are characterfully, sometimes campily, but always fascinatingly sung. The two female singers, especially, easily differentiated, have added a smooth, sultry quality to their characterizations. And the "megaphone" effect at the end of Little Mahagonny is thrilling, even a little frightening.

HE HAS DONE BETTER, MUCH BETTER.......2000-07-10

This is the companion volume to CLASSICAL JUKEBOX Vol. 1 with Eugene Ormandy (see my review). Here we have André Kostelanetz leading his orchestra or the New York Philharmonic. The program is quite varied, going from Bach (AIR ON THE G STRING) to Weill (MACK THE KNIFE). Generally, the sound of this compilation is quite good and the recording technique superior. But this suffers in the fact that some items such as the BLUE DANUBE WALTZ by Strauss seem to be played at a pops tempo, not the real unhurried symphonic tempo. Other pieces such as the Alford COLONEL BOGEY MARCH are played with such over-bearing forces that one is left without any sense of musicality. Kostelanetz has done much better, I remember an LP of the 60's presenting 24 of the world's greatest waltzes. It had everything in the right places. This CD has little to say musically, though many could find it enjoyable.

and it would be a recording worth having. The two pieces seem appropriate for two separate CDs - and it's a somewhat jarring experience to go from one to the other. However, his musicianship - especially his passionate declamations within the Vasks piece - rises above all of the many challenges put forward. The Vasks is a piece I normally associate with Gidon Kremer - Marwood's performance is more lyrical, his tone is more sumptuous, and his fervor is just as evident. Great orchestral support - the small size of the ensemble allows the players to play out without having to artificially limit their sound production.

The question and the answer.......2006-09-13

Kurt Weill composed his violin concerto in 1924 when he was just 24, shortly before he transitioned away from the strictly classical. It shows the influence of Stravinsky and Schoenberg. There is also a noticeable jazz influence. It has been described as "wonderfully sleazy".

The violin concerto by Latvian-born Peteris Vasks (born 1946) could not be further removed from Weill's work. This work has been described as "fragile, beautiful, otherworldly", and (in Vasks' own words) "nostalgia with a touch of tragedy."

So what do these two excellent concertos have in common? For starters, I would say that they both have Anthony Marwood's inspired, devoted and flawless interpretation that infuses both with a sense of deep mystery, suggested in part by the darkly enigmatic art of Joseph Uhl which graces the cover. In addition, both works put forth a considered stance toward the existential darkness which seems to engulf modern life.

The Weill concerto seems to be saying, cope with the meaningless, embrace it, and try to find some dark humor in it. By contrast, the Vasks concerto urges a resolute inner strength that will eventually overwhelm the darkness so that the distant light, "the glittering stars millions of light years away" (Vasks) light our path and guide us forward in our quest for ultimate meaning.

These two works could not be more unalike in temperament, nor their styles more different. The Vasks concerto is elegiac, emotional, mournful, spiritual, tonal, and seering, whereas the Weill concerto is ironic, relatively atonal, cerebral, matter-of-fact, witty, urbane, and perfunctory.

Both are masterworks which produce different responses in the listener. Vasks' work grabs you by the throat, mesmerizes you, until the last ounce of resistance is wrung out of you. You grab hold and ride its emotional wave. Weill's work is dry, self-deprecating, sophisticated, and inventive. It is the product of a young man, filled with confidence, even a little cocky perhaps.

The Vasks concerto resides in a state of acute emotional crisis. It is torn between Yes and No. The great battle for Yes is fought in the fourth movement, but it is a short-lived battle. Immediately the fifth movement brings, if not resolution, then faith, earnestness, sincerety. The elegaic tone resumes, mournful, probing, touched with tragedy, reminiscence, wistfulness.

There is a sense in which the Weill concerto is a preface to the Vasks, or rather; the Weill concerto is the question - to which the Vasks concerto is the answer. Vasks' concerto gives the meditations of a composer far more mature than the twenty-four year old Weill. But Weill has asked the right question. And that is perhaps just as important.

A dazzling display! Conductor William Boughton and soloist Daniel Hope (along with the English Symphony Orchestra) put their spin on works for violin and chamber orchestra by Alfred Schnittke, Kurt Weill, and Toru Takemitsu. Soloist Hope's intonation and control are nothing short of phenomenal; indeed, he seems bred for just this kind of music. It should be said, however, that these works are very much in the postmodern vein and will not appeal to the average violin-and-orchestra enthusiast. Everything here requires concentration, especially from the listener. But perhaps the greatest surprise presented by this release is that Boughton and the ESO seem now to rival Pierre Boulez and groups such as Ensemble Modern for both competence and enthusiasm. This is a breathtaking achievement. --Paul Cook
