5 out of 5 stars An absolutely wonderful "find".......2000-10-31

You may note a bit of a disconnect between the two sections that describe this album. A more thorough list: (1) from the Uppsala Manuscript comes the 1st and 3rd cuts - Orkney Weddung Song and Hymn to St. Magnus (2) from the St. Andrews music book comes the 2nd, 4th and 5th cuts - Sanctus, Alleluya and Lux et gloria (3)from The Art of Music (anonymous 13th century) comes cuts 6 thru 10 (4) The Carver Choirbook gives us cut 11 by Robert Carver, mid 16th century and (5) the Straloch Lute Book gives us the (abridged) romance Graysteil.

This is the album that introduced me to Robert Carver - there are three splendid cds of his work recorded. The title piece Graysteil, tho abridged to 18+ minutes is one of the best introductions to sung epic poetry recorded. The Orkney Island pieces are particularly fascinating as the islands were still under Norwegian rule. The Art of Music was a response to the repression of music that arose with the Protestant sentiments.

Great music and a great reminder of history. This album is well worth listening to - again and again.
