Gospel music at its best.......2007-01-11
This is one of our favorite CDs. We couldn't enjoy this CD more.
All of the tracks are wonderful. We're glad we were able to find
it on Amazon. Hope the Gatlins continue to produce such great music
for years to come.
Gatlin Bros. Family Gospel Favorites.......2005-10-06
Very well done, for just three singers. One of few that carries "Whispering Hope", a favorite of one of our past relatives.
Larry Gatlin & the Gatlin BrothersSing Their Family Gospel Favorites.......2005-08-30
We have almost every Gatlin CD available-This is one of the best--Songs done with different arrangements & are very singable --A mix of old hymns & the Gatlin standards. Really enjoy their version of "Love Lifted Me"
Nice country gospel set!.......2005-01-02
This is a nice Christian country set, from a Top 40 commercial country act that was popular in the 1970s and '80s. Admittedly, Larry Gatlin is sounding a little long in the tooth and slightly shaky as a soloist, but their obvious sincerity and love of the music lifts this album up, and when they sing in an upbeat jubilee style, the Gatlins can really get your toes a-tappin'. There are also some slower ballads sung in a more modern Southern Gospel style, though almost all the songs are older traditional tunes like "Amazing Grace," "Rock Of Ages," Albert E. Brumley's "I'll Fly Away," etc. Another nice thing is that the musical backup is pretty restrained: they just have the band play as much is necessary to get the message across, and leave the emphasis on their vocals and on the words, which is really where is belongs. Gospel fans and Gatlin fans alike should enjoy this record quite a bit.
Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers Family Gospel Favorites.......2004-11-10
XM Satellite Radio Channel "America" recently promoted this album on their "Stained Glass" program. The featured selection was "Let the Lower Lights Be Burning"---a moving rendition of the tradition hymn. Larry Gatlin was interviewed by the host. NOBODY mentioned that "Lower Lights" is NOT contained in Family Gospel Favorites. This was a misrepresentation of the new album. Caveat emptor---I did not double-check the song list when I ordered the album---my fault. But now I am disappointed that a "promised" song is missing.

Customer Reviews:
move over, elmo.......2007-04-22
I was first introduced to this CD at storytime in the library. The songs are so mellow and refreshing. I also recommend 'catch the moon' by Lisa Loeb and Elizabeth Mitchell. Until we got wiggleworms, this is the only kids/parents CD that I could tolerate. My mother-in-law bought an Elmo CD for my son, and I want to poke something sharp in my eye 2 minutes into listening to it. This CD, however, is so much fun to sing along with and easy to play over and over again. Thanks, wiggleworms!
A very good substitute for the class.......2005-07-09
My son and I attended Wiggleworms from when he was 6 months to 1 year old. These songs by the Old Town teachers are terrific for kids - my son who is now 18 months loves the energy and folkiness of these songs! It's almost as if we were still there in Old Town enjoying Lisa D. live. This is a must have CD - especially for the Old Town fun twist on Itsy Bitsy Spider and Old MacDonald. Music is now one of the only things that will calm my toddler during one of the infamous toddler meltdowns - in other words this is highly recommended!
great for any age!.......2005-01-02
we have a 7 week old and we found out it's not too early to start singing these songs to him. my husband and i have a blast listening and singing along. we like the fact that they have a couple of different versions in spanish and french on the cd! we wish there was more for the little wiggleworms!
THE BEST!.......2004-10-26
We saw the other reviews, and thought it could be pretty good. we were wrong, IT'S GREAT. We listen to it with our 2 year old everyday. He's learned a lot of the words in the songs and created his own dances to some. The music is not overly syrupy like a lot of music for toddlers. We love the acoustic guitars. We just ahve one question- when are they going to make another one???!!!???
Most Tolerable Kid's CD Available.......2003-11-22
An instant hit for both the parents and the child in our household. I'll be giving this to all my friends for Christmas. The songs actually make me want to participate in song with my child. Good for the inner child!

It doesn't get better than this........2001-08-01
I first bought this recording on vinyl back in 1975. Gerard Schwartz has since moved on to a career in conducting, but as this recording shows, he's a true Master of his craft. I'm a trumpet player and I know what a good sound is. This guy's got it!
More than technical perfection, the tunes are delivered with delicacy, grace and power.
starting over.......2001-07-03
This is a very good cd for a trumpet player. Many songs of Herbert L. Clarke and Jean Babtiste Arban are there in their familiar versions. If you get this cd, you ought to get Cornet Favorites also. The solos on both cd's stick to the versions found in Arban's Complete Conservatory Method and Clarke's 24 Charateristic Studies, so you can follow them note for note. Carnaval has wind symphony accompaniment and Cornet Favorites has piano accompaniment.
starting over.......2001-07-03
If you have the Arban Complete Conservatory Method and Herbert Clarke's 24 Characteristic Studies, then you have the versions of the solos that are played on this cd, and can benefit from hearing them played. All songs use piano accompaniment so you will have no trouble hearing the cornet. Carnaval (Winton Marsalis) has some of the same songs, but the cornet is harder to hear because of the wind symphony accompniment.
excellence.......2000-05-30
This is the best verison of Carnival I have heard. Classic Wynton also provides a fantastic interpretation on the most difficult trumpet solo of all time. But Schwarz shows amazing control, fantastic percision, and baffling dexterity. The Debutante and the Bride, etc. are also impressive. Its a shame Schwarz gave up trumpet to conduct. Having played these songs myself, I definitely recommend it to any classical trumpet enthusiast/student
Cornet Favorites.......1999-12-28
I enjoyed the cd because of the literature being performed. However, Schwarz's performance is mediocre and lacks luster. The sound is dull and uninviteing. The tempos were unusal and it felt there was no ensemble with the trumpet and piano performance.
I felt there was not a musical product produced in this recording.

Interesting Combination.......2006-06-09
Connie Francis is not a duet singer. Her voice is too powerful and dramatic and stands on it's own merit. She is coupled with a very young Hank Jr. and sings circles around him. At times when allowed, they do make some nice harmonies together, but not that often. This is a Connie Francis recording all the way and it would be interesting to know what Hank thought about pairing with this veteran performer at the time. This is not to say this is a bad CD. The alternate version of "No Letter Today" and "Walk on By" Connie comes on strong and Hank even manages to hold his own against the intimitating Ms. Francis. Of all the C&W duet CDs released, this is one of the most interesting pairings and worth the purchase. It is the only one to have historical merit and the songs are all standards. Enjoy.
The Magic has gone..........2004-06-29
I'm a big fan of Connie Francis, but the chemistry between Connie and Hank (who is good performer) is missing. Songs are badly produced and boring.
Trust Me....You're Really Gonna Like This Album.......2003-03-13
Run, don't walk, to your nearest computer terminal/music store and order/buy this fabulous album. Bear Family Records really does do things up right, and they score big time, again, with the re-release of this album on cd. If you like Connie, and you like country, and you like Hank Jr, this is one of those rare culminations of unlikely pairings that just dazzles. I wore out 2 copies of this album on vinyl, and snagged this as soon as it came out on disc back in the mid '90's........Truly a MUST-HAVE album.....this issue also contains 2 alternate takes.......trust me, "It's A Keeper"
Worth every penney.......2002-09-27
Just to hear the way Connie handles "No Letter Today & Making Believe" is worth 10 times the price of this cd alone. Back in 1964 when this was recorded, the music was lush with plenty of vocal backing. As a matter of fact the same person who has done some work for KD Lang on her country side arranged this material for Connie. It is top knotch, wonderful and refreshing. I can remember as a kid hearing "If You've Got The Money" from the album playing on the radio. Never could find the album. It was the single release from the album but just didn't make it. In her heyday Connie had it all, voice, delivery, and phrasing to match Frank any day. Give it a listen to and see what the hype is about. Connie one of the most beautiful and overlooked voices in popular music. Beautiful just beautiful.
Surprisingly Good!.......2002-01-19
This unusual but very enjoyable album was thought up by MGM executives to help boost the mass appeal of Hank Williams, Jr., who was only 15 when he recorded this album with Connie Francis. The year was 1964 and Connie and Hank were decidedly "un-cool" in the American popular music market, which was experiencing the British Invasion at the time. It is interesting to note, however, that MGM believed Connie's clout would help Hank "break out." It didn't happen. The album didn't go anywhere and it is a true rarity to find it today. I think it is a lot of fun to listen to and has very high production values. Both voices are beautiful -- and I think Connie handles country quite well! She had an incredibly pure and fluid style that lends itself well to the traditional country selections featured on the disc. My favorite tracks are "Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On," "Just Walk on By," and "Muleskinner Blues." (Hearing Connie do a respectable yodel was a pleasant shock, er, surprise! You have to hear it to believe it!!) I think this selection proves that Connie Francis was very brave musically and ahead of her time in terms of collaborations and unusual recording projects. Duet albums like this became all the rage in the '70s and '80s (think George Jones and Tammy Wynette or Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton), by which time much of the public had forgotten about Connie. I wonder what Hank Williams, Jr. thinks of the album -- I've never seen it listed in his discographies! This is a must-have for serious collectors and a bunch of fun for the casual listener. I'd love to see a contemporary country music station build a special show around it -- and ask Connie and Hank to do an interview together! Buy it!

A Musical Upstart - Excellent.......2005-09-01
Comedy with a difference. What!? No swearing????
Todays comedian often resort to expletives to get their humour across. Victor is old school, very talented musically and is funny to all ages. For the young a very funny introduction to the classics.
Shear Delight.......2000-11-13
As a very small boy growing up in Australia in the early 1960's, my Father introduced me to the talents of Victor Borge when we used to listed to two of his albums, 'Comedy in Music' and this one 'Caught in the Act'. They contain all the magic and charm of this most talented pianist and comedian. This particular album has some of his finest work, whether it be his comedy or his brilliant piano playing. Together these albums make up the story from the beginning and will encourage to seek out other works of his. All my brothers (and I have 7)still laugh every time we hear him perform. Once hooked you can't resist. I have seen him live and have videos of his later performances where he performs a number of his best known routines most of which are first performed on these two albums. I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed with this CD. I have recently bought the record version of Comedy in Music and would part with blood to get this one on record. That's the nostalgia in me coming out, but it would be worth it for such a brilliant album.
