Emperor Jones/Dancas Africanas/Choros 7

Most of Heitor Villa-Lobos's orchestral music is more noise than substance. This is not surprising since he wrote so much of it, and probably didn't have the time to think of much substance. (At his best, of course, he wrote wonderful music.) The orchestral works on this program are of no importance. But with the composer conducting the former NBC Symphony Orchestra in these live concert recordings, the music whips up enough excitement to be entertaining while it lasts, although it won't leave much of an impression afterwards. The sound from these 1959 tapes is excellent. The two little piano suites, played by Alfred Heller, are a nice bonus. --Leslie Gerber
