Dvorák's music is often a source of sheer warmhearted joy. Even the sadder moments in these gorgeous dances come with a hidden smile and a gracious sense that all is right with the world. The late Rafael Kubelik led his German orchestra in a wonderful recording of these Dances, beautifully played with great affection and idiomatic rhythms (which the conductor must have taught the orchestra). As performances, these are comparable with the legendary 1950 set by Vaclav Talich and the Czech Philharmonic (Supraphon 11 1897-2). Unlike the Supraphon, though, Kubelik's recording is stereo, sounding better than ever in its new remastering and offered at mid-price. --Leslie Gerber

If you like your Slavonic Dances fast and furious, then this positively sizzling performance is for you. Rafael Kubelík always played Czech music with stress on swift tempos and razor sharp rhythms, and that places this record among the most purely exciting versions you'll ever hear of these popular little gems. But aside from mere speed, there's plenty of loving phrasing in the slower dances, and some deliciously perky solo desk playing from oboes, bassoons, and trumpets. The original CD issue sounded distinctly "canned," with a shrill upper register. That has been largely corrected on this mid-price remastering, adding considerably to the disc's purely musical attractions. -- David Hurwitz

An excellent 'minor' work........2007-01-15

The thing I like most about Antonin Dvorak's 'Slawische Tanze' is that unlike so many other modern works which are nominally based on folk roots, these pieces really sound like the tunes and tempos come from rustic dances. I've listened especially to a lot of stuff by Smetana and Bartok where I simply do not sense a rustic origin to the works. Pieces by Liszt are even worse. It's not that they aren't great music, it's just that unlike works such as Stravinsky's 'Les Noces', they simply don't convey a primitive source. I give these only four stars because while they do sound like derivitives from primitive dances, I don't get the raw power one hears in 'Les Noces' or 'The Rites of Spring'. They are just too 'pretty'.

For a long time Kubelik's two versions of the Slavonic Dances, this one from Barvaria and an earlier one in mono from Vienna (on Decca, in dreadful, screechy sound) were signature recordings. They deserve to be, for even though old-timers nostalgically recalled the likes of Vaclav Talich, Kubelik was that great conductor's direct air. I think David Hurwitz has it right: these are sizzling readings that never let up and rarely relax. They used to be hard to listen to at a stretch becuase of the shillness in the upper register, but now that's been softened quite a bit. For long-term listening I prefer the more thoughtful and varied approach of Harnoncourt in these ever-popular dances (Teldec), but Kubelik remains an old favorite.

Rafael Kubelik swimms in Dvorakian waters as the great master directors of the past as Vaclav Neuman or Vaclav Talich . We know about the long and succesful career of this well talented conductor .
In this opportunity this Dvorak works are played with soverignnity , energy , wildness and noblesse .
Even if you may argue about the powerful rerading of Dorati Minneapolis , you may consider as the exact balance between the warmthness and the fury , the nuance and the radiant patriotism which Dvorak demands .
Excellent transfer process .
If you go tho the great works , then go to Kertesz and the Symphonic poems too .
The Ma Vlast that I love is the performance of Talich with the Czech Philarmonic .

Very excellent recording.......2004-07-25

I spent many days choosing the best recording of (complete) Slavonic Dances. One thing I looked for was Czech interpretaton of the composition (i.e. no american orchestras), the other was, naturally, top muscial quality of whole performance. Lastly, only two recordings remained for me to choose from: Sir Charles Mackerras with Czech PO (Supraphon), and Rafael Kubelik with Bavarian RSO (DG). I think both of these recordings are great, whereas Kubelik's reading is close to dance aspect of the works, and posses swifter tempi, while Mackerras's recording is pointed to precious shift of every note to final musical result and delivers very fairily flowing performace with great sense for every detail.
If you would like to own, well lets say more "folk-like" intepretation of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances, choose Kubelik ; if you prefer more artistic, I can say probably "academic" reading of the works, Sir Mackerras is the right selection for you. And if sound quality of recording is imporant to you, be assured, that Supraphon recording is totally clear and superb, while DG - although remastered in this release - has just average sound quality with a bit of background noise.

Warning, can be addictive!.......2004-04-23

Dvorak's Slavonic Dances are some of the most addictive music I've ever known.

I jumped for joy when DG reissued Kubelik's 1975 recording of all 16 dances using the best digital remastering techniques. If I put this disk on, I can't pull myself away. Dvorak's dances are as easily enjoyed on first listening as any dance music by those more renowned for dances, like the Strauss family. But in the hands of Dvorak, the dance adds an element of depth and wonder that put them in a category all their own.

Kubelik also recorded the 16 dances in 1955 for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic. Decca has restored that recording to the catalog in their "Legends" series (Amazon asin # B00005N570).
The sound is not quite as good in the Decca, though for its age it will startle you how good it is (and it is in genuine stereo by the way). But the attractiveness of the Decca disk is the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Sorry Baravians, you do play very well, but the Vienna Philharmonic is in another class altogether, and Kubelik interprets with much more immagination and feeling in the Decca readings.

Sparkling Performances of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances.......2002-06-22

Here's another welcome Deutsche Grammophon reissue from the American Westminster catalog of the early '50s. Elsewhere I've reviewed another Rodzinski recording in this series, a 2-CD set containing fabulous performances of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet and the Fourth Symphony. In that review I bemoaned the fact that few of Rodzinski's recordings are left in the catalogue. It now appears that DG is planning to release on 24-Bit remastered CDs all the performances Rodzinski recorded for Westminster (originally, about 10 Lps altogether). That's wonderful news because these are some of the best Rodzinski productions ever. (The next scheduled release in 2002 will include another 2-CD set containing nonpareil performances of Tchaikovsky 5 and 6 and the Dvorak "New World," plus a disc of Kodaly.) As for this CD of the Dvorak Slavonic Dances (both sets, Opp 46 and 72), suffice it to say that Rodzinski's achievement is on a level with other classic recordings by George Szell (Sony), Rafael Kubelik (DG) and Vaclav Neumann (Telefunken or Supraphon), which is another way of saying it stands among the very best recorded performances this music has ever received. Rodzinski had a knack for producing propulsive, rhythmically sparkling performances that never sound frantic or rushed. Moreover, his careful attention to articulation, voicing and orchestral balances ensures that you hear an altogether astonishing amount of orchestral detail, even when (as here) the recordings are mono. In fact, as the other reviewer notes, sound quality on this Dvorak CD is completely first-rate: vibrant and colorful, with an almost three-dimensional sense of solidity and presence. If you have even a modicum of interest in Dvorak, you should hear these performances; once you do, they will become favorites. So welcome back, Maestro Rodzinski .... it's good to hear from you again!

A Precise Passion.......2002-02-02

This particular set of Slavonic dances accomplishes a twofold feat. It displays conductor Artur Rodzinski at his finest and disputes the limits of mono recorded sound. Slip this CD into your player and you will be astonished by the clarity: both interpretive as well as sonic.

Those who knew Rodzinski best understood his keen bent toward the pursuit of perfection. "Passion with precision" was how his conducting style was described by some of his critics. Rodzinski would pick an orchestra apart; he was known to rehearse each section of the orchestra separately before bringing them together for performance. He did this because he determined the duty of every conductor was to approach rehearsals "with an absolutely accurate mental blueprint of the interpretation he intends to work out."

If perfection brings to mind static, cold, by-the-book musicianship, this recording disputes that as well. The music on this disc displays a natural warmth, a genuine charm. Rodzinski understood each of Dvorak's dances is of a distinct character and unique personality. He fully develops these traits, undertaking each dance individually and wresting from each dance individual emotion. Close your eyes and you might very well be transported to some imaginary village in Moravia or Bohemia, or, more accurately, the distilled and clarified essence of such a village.

This disc is a brilliant accomplishment in the discography of legendary conductor Artur Rodzinski and deserves a prominent spot in any music lover's collection.
