Works for Accordion & Orchestra

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Manuel Hidalgo is one of the foremost composers of serious music for the accordion, and these works with orchestra display his highly individual and personal concept of sound, which Frak Kämpfer described as "sensual, archaic...free of binding dogmas." All the works on this album were composed especially for Teodoro Anzellotti, already established from his previous recordings as one of the most important accordion soloists of our time. Of great interest to fans of the genre, and to devotees of this unique, adventurous, and beautifully packaged label.

        Album Description

Guido Deiro, the Italian-American accordion virtuoso-- frequently called "The Great Deiro"-- was of paramount importance in the popularization of the accordion in the early 20th century. The first accordionist to perform on the Vaudeville stage (1910), he was also the first accordionist to make sound recordings (Edison Wax Cylinders, 1911). For many years Deiro was a headline attraction at the great vaudeville houses throughout America and abroad, and made more than 100 recordings for the Columbia record company. On Bridge's 2-CD set, Henry Doktorski's sparkling performances of Deiro's music quickly confirm the reason for Deiro's immense popularity. In 1913, Deiro met the young vaudeville performer, and later-to-be Hollywood starlette, Mae West, while both were performing on a vaudeville show in Detroit. The couple quickly fell in love and secretly married. Henry Doktorski's liner notes detail Deiro and West's torrid love affair, and early photograph's of Deiro, provided by Deiro's son, Count Guido Deiro Jr., add to the significance of this release. Deiro's delightful compositions are a window onto an era long past, much like the re-discovery of Scott Joplin's music, twenty-five years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Accordion as you have never heard it!.......2007-04-03

Guido Deiro was the first virtuoso of this much maligned and very difficult to play instrument. An accomplished composer and recording star, Deiro was a hughely popular in Vaudeville. The liner notes reveal his marriage to Mae West and I enjoyed the vintage photos. Henry Doktorski plays Deiro's compositions with great technique and every piece is a revelation of what the accordion is really capable of when played by a master musician.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Album.......2005-01-04

This two CD set is certainly worth the money. Henry Doktorski's performance is indeed breathtaking. It is as if someone were transported back to the days when Guido Deiro himself was performing these songs. Guido Deiro was a recording pioneer who he became the first star piano-accordionist, the first piano-accordionist to perform on the vaudeville stage, and to make sound recordings(I've got at least two of Mr. Deiro's old Columbia 78 RPM records at home). In fact, Guido became the first person to coin the phrase "Piano-accordion." You'll find plenty of good stuff about Guido in Mr. Doktorski's liner notes on the two-CD set as well as on the GuidoDeiro.com website. Mr. Doktorski's sparkling performance certainly does Mr. Deiro's songs justice.

"Free-Reed ODYSSEY" consists of classical works played on the accordion. Most selections have never been recorded solely with this instrument. The selections include solos and ensemble renditions, all performed by Daniel Barski with a single acoustic accordion, employing multi-track technique. With the exception of one piece, all selections were transcribed for classical accordion by Daniel Barski.

5 out of 5 stars Eisler at the piano is fascinating yet not his primary focus.......1999-04-09

Eisler's piano music must be takened within the context that he wrote best only with a program or with a text. But prior to his political engagements in Germany, where the Nazis put a price on his head, the "First Sonata" out does the piano music of its time. The Berg "Sonata" has erroneously forshadowed Eisler's and naturally Schoenberg who was more vigorous and abstract. It seemed no one had a monopoly however on the darkness all this piano repertoire reflected the earlier part of this century. Eisler's "First Sonata" is fast-paced, very exciting for the ears with a continuous momentum, trills and leaping registers almost toccata-like. It's also very compact, an important Eisler trait and again to my mind beats to hell the Berg. When we jump to the "Third Sonata" from 1943 we have an Eisler now living in exile in the Pacific Palisades near Los Angeles. And it is curious that all the sunshine there did nothing to effect the darkness and the ugliness that is part of the"Third".Olbertz plays with great discipline not lingering anywhere yet jettisoning his hands in the right registers. When Eisler returned to now the DDR, East Germany he was ignored by the apprarachik authorities in spite of the fact that he wrote their National Anthem. The "Variations" here was Eisler's attempt at a reconciliation of the state of the musical world. He always maintained that the future of music had to contain an element of accessibility,of direct communication, yet not simple-minded nor effects for the mere sake of effects, nor intellectualizing for no real musical end, all sins of current postmodernity. The result for Eisler is really too academic for now he is away from the dangers of the front lines of struggle, living in relative quiet and abandonment, all this must have effected his creativity. All of Eisler's piano music is traditionally bound with never more than two voices at work with a high sense of vigour and drama.

              Album Description

Rookwood for double bass; Labyrinth Tango for accordion; and Piano Dreaming for ruined pianola. That Time (Simulplay II) is for a duo of prepared piano and double bass. Of course, with Ross, this thumbnail description tells not much of the story. So we'll let Ross say a few words. Step on down. "During the drought that never ended at Nallan Sheep Station I confess to recording on the Ruined Piano at night. I'd hide in the freezing shed crouched under the piano waiting for Dave to turn off the TV, switch off the generator and go to bed. Straight after, I would drag up an oil drum, feel the broken teeth of the Pianola under my fingers, then play con bravura passione for the applause of millions of cicadas through the shivery shuddery graveyard shift." Hmmmm.
