Album Description

Although the symphonies, string quartets and concertos represent the core of his achievement, Shostakovich entered into the spirit of `light music' with enjoyment and enthusiasm. The Ballet Suites, four suites of light orchestral music assembled by the composer from his stage, film and ballet scores (some, ironically, proscribed under the dictates of Soviet Realism) and prepared for publication by Lev Atovmyan in 1949, were originally intended as material for radio broadcasts and promotion through `approved' Soviet outlets. These entertaining suites will come as a surprise to those who know Shostakovich only as a `serious' composer.

5 out of 5 stars A great alternative.......2005-06-26

This recording is a great alternative
to Neeme Jarvi's recording of the Ballet Suites.
If you cannot buy Jarvi's try this
recording, they are very much close.
The sound is great, and the tempo is close
to that of Jarvi's. Best present alternative
to Jarvi's recording.

5 out of 5 stars Shostakovich in a Lighter Vein.......2004-10-24

For those who know only the dark, sardonic, angst-ridden undertones of his string quartets and symphonies, it often comes as a surprise to some that Shostakovich was a master of lighter music as well. And since ballet music tends to comprise short, rhythmic and melodic sections, and since the ballet was the quintessential Russian theatrical art, it is no surprise that not only Shostakovich but most of his predecessors and contemporaries (think of Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Prokofiev, Khachaturian, Kabalevsky, Shchedrin and Gliere, to name only a few) wrote light, easily grasped, tuneful music for the form. And it is also no surprise that there is a lot of Russian ballet music that gets lost in the crowd. Such is the case with these ballet suites, uncreatively named Ballet Suites Nos. 1-4, which Shostakovich put together in 1949-1953 primarily for radio broadcast. They excerpt numbers from several of the composer's ballet scores, primary of which is 'The Limpid Stream,' which contributes eleven separate pieces distributed throughout the four suites. There are also a couple of well-known numbers from 'The Bolt,' which has been recorded by these same artists--the fine conductor Dmitry Yablonsky, and his impressive Russian Philharmonic Orchestra on a previous Naxos release available here at Amazon as ASIN B000063TS9. Other sources are 'The Human Comedy' (3 numbers), 'Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 1' (2), 'The Tale of a Priest and His Servant Balda' (1), 'Michurin' (1), and 'The Song of the Great Rivers' (1).

The suites contain wonderful Shostakovian waltzes, polkas, galops and more. The tone is generally light and carefree, but there is a meltingly beautiful Adagio from 'The Limpid Stream' that features the playing of conductor Yablonsky, a fine cellist, in a piece that reminds one of Saint-Saëns's 'The Swan.' Trumpeter Oleg Tolkathev shines in 'Sentimental Romance,' a piece that sounds for all the world like music by Kurt Weill at his ironic and world-weary best. Other highlights, for me, are the sweeping 'Lyric Waltz,' the insouciant 'Pizzicato Dance,' the music-boxy 'Waltz-scherzo,' 'Spring Waltz' with its akilter clarinet and trombone solos, and the grand 'Waltz' and perky 'Gavotte' from 'The Human Comedy.'

If you like Kabalevsky's 'The Comedians,' Khachaturian's 'Gayane,' or Gliere's 'Russian Sailors' Dance' from 'The Red Poppy,' you'll surely enjoy this release. The sound is lifelike, the playing infectious and brimming with high spirits.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars And You Thought You Didn't Like Shostakovich!!.......2003-09-17

I'm astonished that no one has reviewed this CD (until now) which came out over a year ago. It is an astonishingly assured set of performances by the youngish cellist turned conductor, Dmitry Yablonsky, and the Russian State Orchestra. (And, even better, there is a DVD-Audio of these same performances that just came out and it is in superb surround sound. Yeehaw!)

This is Shostakovich at his most accessible. It's all jazzy, tuneful, interestingly orchestrated (he does things with the xylophone that he must have picked up from watching cartoons with music by Carl Stallings--do you suppose?). And there are some saxophone licks that couldn't have been composed by anyone but a Russian (although, the idea came to me after imagining in my mind's ear the saxophone solos in Musorgsky's 'Pictures at an Exhibition' and the most familiar orchestration of THAT is by a Frenchman, Ravel--oh, well, the TUNE is Russian).

This is, in fact, music that Shostakovich wrote in imitation of American popular music. [In fact, 'Tahiti Trot' is his take of Vincent Youmans's 'Tea for Two.'] There's even a Sousa march in the first Jazz Suite. And he gets it all almost right and inimitably Shostakovian as well. It's right enough that American listeners will probably be fooled--if they listen to it without knowing the composer--into believingt it had to be by someone like Ferde Grofe or Gershwin or even Leroy Anderson.

My point is this: this is Shostakovich's happiest, bounciest, most accessible music. And on top of that it's beautifully written and performed. I don't know what you're waiting for.

I had my wife waltzing around the listening room just a few days ago to a new recording of waltzes by Lehar. But I grabbed her again when I'd cranked this one up and we waltzed and polka'd and even tango'd. It's impossible to resist.

Recommended heartily. And even more so, if you've got the equipment for it, I recommend the new DVD-Audio version.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer delight musically and sonically.......2007-06-02

I have to admit this is the first time I've heard these delicious Shostakovich works. If you haven't, throw out what you know about his music. The Leningrad Symphony this isn't. Would you believe "Tea for Two?" Would you believe some real tongue-in-cheek, highly listenable music? If not, you should. Fun stuff here.

This is the best sounding recording I've ever heard from Naxos. Great hall ambience (in 7.1) yet never drowning in ambience and with great impact. Glad I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars "Breathtaking".......2005-03-24

Amazing sonics, incredible detail and wide dynamic range encompass this SACD version of Shostakovich`s Jazz suites 1 & 2 et al.

The on the mark "imaging" (details between left and right channels) will blow you away! All the works are grand renditions but the Jazz Suite 1 and the Tahiti trot will bring tears to your eyes!
Another wonderful attribute that Naxos brings to their SACD releases is a different coloring and tint to their booklets.

Glorious!

5 out of 5 stars Genius Under Pressure.......2005-07-08

This album is a compilation on the "lighter" ,usic of the 20 Century Russian maaster Dmitri Shostakovitch. Most, if not all of this music was composed on commission from one or another soviet "cultural" bureau dealing with variety entertainment. The music was used for popular dance programs, circuesses, musical theatre, etc. Why did the usuallky serious, solemn, master accept such commissions? In a word, to stay off the Gulag. Shostakovitch fell precipitously from favor with Stalin because of the form and content of his ooera "A Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk".
He felt threatened by the enmity of the paranoid Stalin (as did countless others) for the remainder of the dictator's lengthy reign. He felt (probably quite correctly) that he had to prove, by appearances at least, his commitment to Marxist/Stalinist notions of art and the masses again and again, hence his accptance of commissions for "popu;ar" music. What this album demonstrates, however, is, that whatever his conscious motivation was, Shostakovitch remained a dedicated composer with very high standards even in this "lighter" area. The little pieces which make up the "Jazz Suites" and "Ballet Suites" are gems of humor and sentiment, often spiced (risking Stalin's ire) with subtle irony, and not-so subtle satire. I highly recomment this album for relief during or after a long session with Shostakovitch's sympronies.

5 out of 5 stars Clarity and Verve.......2005-01-14

For many years the thought of purchasing this version of the Shostakovich First has danced to the foreground and dashed off stage left. Fortunately I did find a copy...and thank goodness...the show is worth it. The Philadelphia Orchestra plays with individually clear voices conversing with each other in a sparkling performance that is unmatched by any other recording that I own...or that I have heard of the First. It's not an overstatement to say that Ormandy has brought us a youthful, vibrant account of the young Dmitri's sly wit and charm. Don't pass up a chance to hear this. By the way, the accompanying Ballet Suites display Kostelanetz bringing out the delightful balance of High Society and Circus that makes Shostakovich's music of this genre a commentary of society with a sense of fun. So here's a side of Shostakovich that we should not forget.

5 out of 5 stars Too good to pass up........2001-10-13

The Philedelphia Orchestra has a long tradition of Shostakovich performance, dating from Stokowski's US premiere of the 1st Symphony in the 30s. This is a brilliant recording of the 1st. Ormandy followed Stokowski in championing the music of Shostakovich, and his affection for the score is evident in every measure. The overture and ballet bits that fill out the disc are great fun. Kostelanetz was in his element here -- all pop and fizz, but never just tossed off as trash. This is a great buy. If you don't own a recording of the First, this is the one to have. If you do have a recording, this one is probably better!
